Since it's Japanese food, some of the portions are small like the rice burgers and the breakfast items but they are all pretty filling. The place is casual and not that big. Hayashi Sauce tasted like a tomate based sauce mixed with tender beef stew. The sauce highlighted the original taste of beef well~ My friend tried their salmon risotto, and it was sooo delicious that I wished I ordered that one. The risotto was so creamy and rich, while still letting the flavour of the salmon come through. It was a neat little bowl that we couldn't get enough of. HUNNEEEYYY! If you want authentic Japanese brunch - bruhh.. this is THE place. This is my second visit and if you want a brunch that fills your tummy up. Marulilu. Café. I ordered the omurice (ketchup rice with omelete on top) and my partner ordered the breakfast plate A w/ waffle and pork sausage. We also ordered a nice hot drink of white hot chocolate and hot caramel. I'm the type of person who loves to mix ketchup with my rice and egg, and the omurice has justified my taste. The omelete on top was cooked just right, it wasn't dry - it was just right. Also, the green salad that came with it had a delicious dressing. The portion was just right! :) The hash browns my partner had were crispy and crunchy (yum!!) and the waffles were cooked just right as well. Walking past this place, you wouldn't think anything of it. But after dining here, I am a repeat customer. The food is consistent and always know what to expect when I order. A personal favorite is the garlic omni rice. The egg on top of the rice is always cooked nicely and never over cooked. The garlic rice is just a nice touch. You get menus but go to the counter to order (they will keep your seat reserved for you). Food came out pretty quickly. I tried the Oyako Kinoko don essentially chicken, egg and mushrooms on rice. It was on point and I'm glad they didn't skimp on the mushrooms! We came just before lunch on Saturday and when we left there was a lineup out the door. Marulilu Cafe is a cute Japanese cafe that is right across the street from the Canada Line Broadway SkyTrain station. The building it is located in looks a little old on the outside, but the interior has the feel of a Japanese cafe with European influences. The setup here is that you order at the counter first and then take a seat if you are dining in. There is a tip jar to the side in support of Japanese earthquake relief. The offerings here are a combination of things. Marulilu has Western breakfast options, Japanese breakfast, casual Japanese food, baked goods and a great drink selection (including ones made with booze). Though my interest seems to be drawn to the Japanese fare which includes items like okonomiyaki, omurice and rice burgers (like Mos Burger). It was breakfast, so I decided to get the Japanese breakfast set ($6.99) and a regular matcha latte ($3.80). The breakast set item list is similar to that of my Portland Japanese breakfast for half the price! The Japanese breakfast set consisted of rice, miso soup, tofu (or natto), a Japanese omelet and a piece of salmon. It is a simple meal, but I enjoyed it very much. Particularly liked the Japanese omelet which was not cooked over well. I like it when the yolk is still a bit saucy. The salmon is not the best quality, but okay given the value. Tofu was interestingly warm. I thought it would be served cool, but it works just as well. Visiting a Japanese cafe, I expect the matcha to be good and the matcha latte here was. The latte was served warm rather than hot. And it was very frothy and full of healthy flavor. Glad I found Marulilu on Yelp. Yummy homemade Japanese food at an affordable price with good service! I've been here mostly at off peak hours so food has always been pretty fast and good. They have specials every day too. We yelped Marulilu Cafe for our last breakfast in Vancouver and Marulilu caught our eyes since we're both big fans of Japanese food :) FOOD: - omurice with a side of hashbrown ($1 extra) - presentation is so cute here! The egg was perfectly cooked, set but still so fluffy and just almost still liquidy. Yummy flavor to the fried rice, and great sesame dressing on the salad! Hashbrown is AWESOME. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside :) - oyakodon - my bf lovessss oyakodon! The rice on this one was lighter in color than what we're used to, but had great flavor! Healthy does of mirin in the seasoning :) - matcha latte - the yelp reviews raved about this and they were right! So good and not super sweet, and a lovely green color. SERVICE: They're so friendly here! You seat yourself, then order at the counter. Food comes out quickly and they have self serve water and newspapers for you to read. They also take US dollars. Nice. Not quite like Cafe de l'Orangerie but very similar. I like it. I was in the area and I remembered seein Yelp reveiws about it. Secretly, I had it on my radar and wanted to get to it for quite some time. Small interior and can get quite cramped when busy. It's half and half self serve. Come in, seat yourself and they'll give you a menu. Choose your items and order up front. They'll bring out the food when complete. Prices are very reasonable for the food. I'm really diggin' this Japanese breakfast cafe. Marulilu is very well priced with big portions. Not only are they affordable, the food was delicious. I had the Takoyaki and the Okonomiyaki. Takoyaki is a ball of dough with soft center with octopus and a crispier exterior. They are usually served with takoyaki sauce (similar to Worcestershire sauce) and mayonnaise. The Okonomiyaki is a pizza like dish with cheese and seafood, but the base is made of flour and mountain yam. Both dishes were gladly demolished within 1/2 hour. Other options such as typical Western style breakfasts are available as well. There's plenty of pay parking around the area. The is a small and clean Cafe run by Japanese Couple. When we walked in, the decor and atmosphere so nice and warm. It was great and delicious breakfast that I haven't had for long time. Waffle - I loved it served with chocolate whipped cream and light syrup. Breakfast A - Bacon/Ham/Pork sausage with eggs, hard brown and brown toast. The pork sausage was lean and tasty. Cute little breakfast establishment across the street from the Cambie Skytrain station. It has a family run casual atmosphere. They serve the typical western breakfast options (eggs, toast, hash browns, bacon, waffles etc) and also Japanese style breakfasts. Cute hole in the wall Japanese cafe. Known for their breakfast and lunch, but I was able to sneak in a quick early dinner at 5:30pm, before they shortly close at 6pm. How unfortunate, because parking is a lot easier to locate after 6pm. But nonetheless, lets get to the food aspect: Ordered the simple basic omurice. Was good. Egg was nicely pan fried, but was still left moist. I guess I would've prefered it if it was a tad bit more fluffy. Taste was there, but of course a bit bland, but thats where you have fun with your ketchup! I think the mixture of the rice and plain omurice goes well together. And what an omurice should be like :) Portions are a bit small for us, greedy westernized folks. TL;DR - Get the regular-sized coffee jelly with whipped cream. I've come to Marulilu pretty often in the past for their Japanese breakfasts, which are very filling and provide a nice assortment of rice, fish, and natto. This time however, we were craving some salmon benedicts for breakfast. The benedicts came with the help of a healthy serving of hollandaise sauce, which was great for dipping. The eggs were perfectly done, not too soft and definitely not too hard. The smoked salmon came in chunks, which was a really nice surprise, since the smoked salmon I'm used to only ever comes in thin slices. After breakfast we decided to order a coffee jelly for dessert to finish everything off. The coffee jelly itself appears to be made from black coffee and gelatin, and the whipped cream that they give you is slightly sweetened, so you don't have to add any extra sugar. You might have to ration out the whipped cream though, because the black coffee jello is a little bit bitter if you're not used to drinking black coffee. read more

My bf brought me to this cute little Japanese cafe on Broadway. I wasn't sure what I wanted so I went for the Salmon Japanese Breakfast plate. It came with a piece of cooked salmon, egg, tofu, rice and miso soup. Good healthy tasting breakfast no excessive grease like most american breakfasts but I didn't stay full either. My boyfriend had the Ebi-Katsu wrap. It was very interesting. Crispy ebi and juicy veggies all wrapped in a spinach toritilla. Once you pick it up though, it gets pretty messy with all the juices going down your hand. Service was great. We were lucky to be there before the lunch rush since there's only one person up front. A favourite place. Apparently in the style of a Japanese kissaten (I've never been, so can't confirm) with all-day breakfast (both Western and Japanese), plus lots of other Japanese favourites (donburi, omuraisu, curry, etc.) in a tiny room and friendly, efficient staff. The presentation is lovely (cutlery in little boxes, doilies under the soup ... it's very "kawaii"). Despite being an essentially nondescript space it nonetheless oozes atmosphere: the atmosphere of an authentic Japanese cafe. Oh, and reasonably priced (prices for some items are ridiculously inexpensive.) That, and some of the best coffee I've had! This is a quaint little place. It blends traditional brunch with Japanese flair. There is always a line up and they don't seat you until your entire party is there. It can't accommodate large groups so maybe group size max of 6 ppl. It is meant more for 2 to 4 ppl. Came here with my friend as she hasn't been here before. We ordered okonomiyaki ( Japanese seafood pancake ) and eggs benedict with salmon and 2 hash browns. The okonomiyaki is delicious; lots of seafood, flavours and we'll balanced. It has the right amount of sauce so the pancake isn't mushy. The eggs benedict was great. The egg was cooked perfectly, with the yolk just runny enough to ooze over the benedict but not all over the plate. The hollandaise sauce was good. I ordered a large matcha latte. It was soo good. I would order another but then I'd be wired. Lol. Once you're seated, you would need to go upto the counter to make your order. The food comes quickly. I've been here many times now. The London fog is perfect, better than most places. Just the right amount of sweetness. Not too sweet. When this place is busy you share tables I come here as often as I can. This little shop of Japanese delightfulness is my haven when I want to quietly enjoy a Japanese breakfast or lunch that will help put me back in my Zen. The staff are friendly and it's the only place I can think of where this gal can get Okinawa Taco Rice. The reason for 5 stars is that everything here is authentic right down to the last burp of appreciation for the good food that is known as Yoshokuya style food. If only we had a place like this in Richmond. But no, I don't want one there. It would spoil the essence of Marulilu and this place has to stay unique to this community alone. I don't want to share. And so it seemed that way with another grumpy customer who didn't want to share a table with us. Sharing tables is common in Asian or other countries where there just isn't enough space. It's a good social gathering, but I guess some uhhh, Canadians just don't like it. That poor fellow got so stressed out when I said he could share with us. He freaked and left because I challenged him? Huh? En Garde!.....he left. Nevermind. We had a great little meal and got to chat with others in the place. Life is too short to worry about the creeps and hermits that might offend you. Eat well, enjoy your food and be thankful. Oh, yes, and stay healthy. I ordered a Lavender Milk Tea Latte and the Kinoko-Don (mushroom) at Marulilu Cafe. Both were enjoyable dishes. I liked the sweetness and distinct flavor of the lavender latte. The rice dish was quite nice, it had just the right amount of sauce, and the onions were so good. My friends ordered the Omurice with garlic rice and tomato sauce. The next time I come back to Marulilu, I will definitely be ordering this dish. The flavors were really good, and reminded me of a Hong Kong style dish that I like to order. * Okonomiyaki too! * This pleasant little cafe really still feels like it could be near a train station in Japan (and it is right across the street from the Canada Line conveniently). Today I had the okonomiyaki. They make it fresh after you order (as it should be), and bring it to your table. They don't provide you with the little okonomiyaki paddles, but give you chopsticks instead. It was a nice preparation, with a bit of a twist by having a few red peppers and zucchini pieces thrown in on top of the more usual seafood suspects like mussels, shrimp, and octopus. I've been here on multiple occasions and every time has been more than satisfying. I would love to try more of the menus, but I can't seem to get away from the katsu sandwich and the okonomiyaki. The pork in the katsu sandwich is always juicy and crispy. I like their choice of focaccia bread as a bun because it is thick enough for the tomatoes and the sauce; it doesn't get soggy. I also like how they use cabbage instead of lettuce. It is filling and extremely reasonable at $6.99. The okonomiyaki is my fav! I am always sad when they run out, which is sometimes really early. It is a Japanese style seafood pancake with green onion. Topped with Japanese mayo, a form of teriyaki sauce, and pickled ginger as a garnish. The best part is that it is topped with benito flakes: dried, smoked tuna that is thinly shaved. Now, I'm not much of a tea drinker. I actually don't often partake in hot beverages, but whenever I come here, I can't leave without having one. I love the royal milk tea latte and London fog. The presentation for both is beautiful. Since their two soups change daily, I called Marulilu later that week, asking if they had the pumpkin soup that day. "No," she said, "but if you know when you'll be coming by, we'll have it ready for you that day." ! ! ! ! ! Now that's what I call customer service! I named the day, and sure enough, there it was. I got the Large soup this time :) Try any of the fresh fruit smoothies! This is my favourite place to get them. I've been disappointed by only one item here: the Omu-Rice. What a cute little café. Luckily I read some of the reviews beforehand (thank you Yelp!) and knew the etiquette of the shop. Enter. Get verbally greeted. Seat yourself. They'll bring a menu (or you can take one from the front cashier). Once you've chosen your delectable item, order and pay for it at the front cashier. Finally, sit back down and wait for the delicious drinks and edibles to come! I eat with my eyes first, the photos of the Okonomiyaki were too gorgeous to resist. I ordered that with a Matcha Latté. The matcha latté had a really strong presence of matcha flavour and the cream made it really rich and smooth. It was not as sweet as I'm used to but it was perfect to balance the intense flavours of my okonomiyaki (I'll talk about that soon). There are sugar packets and honey available but I left it as is. The latté was good to the last drop and the evidence of yummy matcha was at the bottom of my cup, with tiny matcha bits. I can't wait to try their london fog! They also have some alcoholic mixed drinks as well! Oh Okonomiyaki. How delicious were you? SO DEE-LISH! The "pancake" mix of seafood (squid/octopus), grains and cheese was yummy with a light crispiness on the outside for a good texture. The pivotable touch is the beautiful criss-cross of japanese mayo, sweet sauce, bonito flakes, seaweed and ginger on top that added such strong flavours... one cannot resist or stop eating it! This dish kind of reminded me of the pancake version of takoyaki. Next time I HAVE to try their takoyaki, jealous of the lady across from me devouring her mouthfuls of yumminess. My boyfriend tried the Mabo-tofu don. The tofu was a good texture and took on the spicy sauce taste well. There was plenty of ground beef in the dish as well. It looked like a small bowl but it definitely filled him up! Overall, lovely café with pleasant and friendly staff. I enjoyed the faux leather But super comfy chairs. Parking is mostly paid, but walking a little further you can always find some street parking. I'll definitely be back... see you there! read more

Our group of six came here as a second resort after our first choice brunch place in downtown Vancouver had a 2hr wait time..HELLS-TO-THE-NO!! We were not about to wait 2hrs to eat. So we found Marulilu doing another Yelp search and decided to eat here. There wasnt much of a wait when we arrived and the place was packed. It's a Japanese breakfast house and had a pretty extensive menu of breakfast offerings (See Attached photos). The food was delicious and hit the spot. I'm going to keep this review simple by saying you have got to go here for breakfast if you're ever in Vancouver BC. Great Food and good service! read more

It's hard to find a Japanese restaurant in Vancouver that doesn't just sell sushi so I was elated to find out about Marulilu. I've always wanted to try authentic okonomiyaki and takoyaki and although I'm not sure how close it is to the real thing, my experience here was unique and I found it worth the visit. The okonomiyaki was described as a cheesy savory seafood pancake and it was exactly that. It had a nice crisp on the outside and an incredibly soft and fluffy inside. The cheesy pockets were the best! It was more salty than I imagined and the sauce on top lacked the sweetness that I originally thought it would have. The pickled ginger was also unsweetened. It wasn't an unpleasant surprise though. The seafood gave it a nice variation of texture as well. I would highly recommend it! The omu curry rice with the pork katsu was also very delicious. The katsu was the crispiest I've ever had and the curry was very homely. The omurice had a comforting light texture to it as well and everything tasted amazing when it was all put together! I also had the takoyaki and I'm happy to report that it tasted identical to the ones you can find all over Vancouver from the night market to random sushi places. All in all, it was a neat little place to visit at least once. The staff are extremely friendly and they have the most adorable voices! The food was very comforting but there's nothing about it flavour wise that would blew me out of the water. However, it's one of the few places that serve okonomiyaki in Vancouver so it would still be worth a visit. read more
