Lovely wide cup, creamy smooth latte, mm. I sat near the window, people-watching and writing my first ever Thanksgiving cards (gotta get them out early!). I brought the cup back (I think it's only fair, really, and makes it nicer for the next person to sit down), and the lady serving seemed very pleased and shocked. So yes, a very nice little place! I'm such a sucker for outer decor, and so I was excited to try this place when I saw it. I was equally excited to see that omurice was on the menu. (Totally irrelevant, I was determined to find the best omurice around after I watched "Lunch Queen", a Japanese drama.) My friend ordered the Japanese breakfast, and my sister ordered chocolate syrup waffles. The omurice was disappointing, as it lacked any taste apart from the egg covering and the ketchup that was squeezed on top. If only the Yoshokuya didn't go away (now replaced by Shibuya Nuts on Denman, close to Kintaro.) They had really good omurice! The Japanese breakfast had salmon & rice, miso soup, and a box of natto. It was interesting seeing him eat natto for the first time, if you know what i mean ;) It was "different" for him, so he liked it. The waffles were standard; I'm sure everyone else talked about it already so I won't. Haven't tried their other stuff, but reading about the drinks and dessert, I may pop by again! p.s. Had breakfast here with my family while on vacation and ordered the Breakfast Plate B (w/ no meat) and a Matcha Latte. Food was good, but the hashbrowns reminded me of McDonald's hashbrowns. Nothing too special about the Matcha Latte. Overall, good food for a cheap price. read more

Finally visited this cafe. It's pretty good. The portions are small but the food is cooked well. Definitely quality over quantity. My instinct was to compare this place to Cafe de L'Orangerie in Marpole, but the style is a bit different. This place emphasizes breakfast and brunch whereas L'Orangerie is probably more lunch/dinner. That thin omelette over the Omu rice was delicious. Maybe order two dishes instead of just one if your appetite is larger. Otherwise, it's also a nice place for dieting. read more

This is my favorite brunch place. Located at Cambie and Broadway, this place is pretty accessible from most places. And contrary to some other brunch locations, I have never had to spend too long standing in a boring line with a growling stomach just to get a table. The food has always been good. During multiple visits, I have tried their Eggs Benny (one that comes with hash brown), Okomoniyaki, Kinoko Don (mushrooms cooked with eggs, onions and sweet sauce, served with rice) and the breakfast plates (eggs made to your choice, hash browns, choice of meat and waffle, all for $11!), Irish lamb stew with bread and I have been pleased every time. After reading the good reviews, I ordered the matcha green tea latte and garlic ome rice. I was pretty excited to try it but after 15 minutes of waiting I realized two people who came in after me were already enjoying their lunch before me. I gave a confused look to the worker who took my order in which he came over to apologize and said it was going to take another 5 minute. But my food didn't come out for another 10 min and during thy time another person who came after the other two got his meal. They definitely forgot my order so I was pretty annoyed when I got the food. The mushroom tomato sauce went well with the garlic rice. It was yummy the first few bites however after it started getting a bit too rich to finish it. I did order an iced London fog latte to go. That was good so I was a little appeased after I left. I haven't decided if I want to give this spot another chance yet. I'll be around for another two months for work so if I do I will update my review. read more

I come here a lot, usually with my fingers crossed that it won't be a full house. It's a small Japanese cafe but their food is great and again, points for consistency. I order the same thing quite often (Katsu-don or Japanese breakfast) and although there are sometimes small variations, it's always good. I have tried some other menu items as well and some are great, some are so-so. (rice burgers were cool, wasn't a big fan of ome rice though). You can also get more traditional bacon / egg style breakfast here. All sorts of coffees available too. The staff really are friendly; all the time, even when it's super busy. Service is excellent as all staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating (it was a busy day but my party of two wanted a four seater table by the window and they obliged because they understand I love the sun). My friend and I came here heavily afflicted by a case of "hanger" after the disappointment of seeing so many restaurants that we wanted to visit closed on Family Day. Luckily for us, this bustling Japanese cafe welcomed us with "open" arms. Inside we both appreciated the homey, fast-paced ambience. I liked the fact that there were some larger tables that were split by dividers to seat more customers. And this place was PACKED. We had a hard time deciding what to order from the menu because of the large variety of unique dishes, or maybe it was the fact that I was delightedly distracted by an image of "Cheburashka" (Russian cartoon mascot!) printed on the colourful menu. We placed our orders and paid at the front, and then patiently awaited our meals. I ordered: 1) Matcha Tea Arriving in a special cup, this tea was incredibly smooth and creamy, and highly addictive. It was a nice palate refresher during our meal. For someone who appreciates strong tea, this hit the spot. 2) Omurice with Mushroom Tomato Sauce Omurice is a ketchup-infused rice wrapped in a thinly cooked Japanese Omelette. I had never tried anything like this before, but MY GOD was this dish amazing - my sensory buds were not just having a party, but a RAVE of playful textures and flavours. The chunks of edamame contrasted amazingly well with the soft and fluffy rice inside. The omelette itself was perfectly cooked and added a hint of sweetness to the dish. To top it all off, the creamy tomato sauce - cooked with peas, green beans, mushrooms, and red peppers - brought the dish together in a sweet and sour harmony. There is also a small salad served on the side consisting of cabbage, cucumber, spinach, and a light sesame dressing which provided a nice crunch and lightness to the meal. This dish was comforting and satisfying to the max, and the large serving size was well-worth its value at $15. If there's one thing that would've made our experience more enjoyable, it is that this place needs better ventilation; the room inside was pretty warm from the sunlight directly hitting the front of the restaurant. Getting here by transit is as easy as it gets - it is right across the street from the Broadway City Hall Station via the Canada Line. For those driving, there is metered parking, but free parking in the area is pretty limited. This restaurant is a gem of Vancouver. You have to try it out at least once! read more

But it should be soft and fluffy (a little bit runny-like is a plus) Inside the store is not clean. There are lots of dust on lights and dark old spots on wall which made me feel not wanting to eat here. Service. Where is service here? A girl who took my order at the till had no smile at all. Well it's fine with it, but what I hated about her was that she showed me her attitude. Also she couldn't even answer my questions :"What is the popular one here" "what is your favorite" She just murmured. How can you not answer these simple questions. After I ordered, she came to put a cutlery set on my table very rudely. She literally threw it on. I'm really regretting that I visited. It is NOT worth trying their meal. I sent it back only to wait another 15 minutes while all other customers who arrived after me were continued to be served. I've been there three times now as I work fairly close by. I've had: - takoyaki (twice) - the rice burger (kimchee pork) - Katsu don - Americano (it is a cafe after all) Takoyaki - 6 pieces, very fluffy, good katsu, didn't feel like it was out of frozen premade package so i have to believe it was hand made. Both times it was very very tasty. The rice burger for me was average. I love the idea but the meat crumbled out. The miso shiru and salad that came was fresh and tasty. Also the price point was decent. I will try the other beef option next time Katsu don was very very delicious. It was similar to a oyakodon in sofar that he had an egg on top. I'll have it again. Marulilu Cafe is a genuine surprise, this little Japanese place most certainly could use a renovation but the food here is simply outstanding. This place serve delicious Japanese food at a very affordable price as well as western breakfast. At it's heart this place is still a cafe so there's plenty of variety for drinks, I enjoyed their matcha latte and belgian chocolate mocha. We all know there's hundreds of Japanese places around Vancouver but the takoyaki here is something else, at $4 for 6 pieces it's on the cheap side and the golden crisp texture of it is simply unmatched. My friend and I went there for lunch. We waited for about 10 minutes for a table b/c the place is small and filled with people. It is quite different than most restaurant that we went because you have to go to the counter to order and pay before they bring the food out and you also pour your own water if you want to drink water. After ordering, we waited for about 20-30 minutes before our food came out. My friend had egg Benedict and I had Japanese breakfast and we shared the waffle. My portion is quite small and I only felt half full and after i had half of the waffle I felt just about full. The small piece of pink salmon on my plate is flavourful. The piece of tofu is cold and the miso soup is warm not hot. The waffle is plain and not very flavourful. Price is about right and the service is average. after we got in my car, we both smelled the grease from the kitchen that is sticking to our jacket and clothes. My dining companion and I have a major point of contention in our relationship...he likes going out for greasy, cheap breakfasts, and I don't. North American style breakfasts are just so foreign to me: I'm not a meat eater, I dislike pancakes, and I dislike juice, rendering most breakfast menus entirely unappealing. Plus, I grew up with a Korean mother, meaning I'm used to eating spicy stews and rice for breakfast. Waffles and milk? Pah! Enter Marulilu. Their Japanese style breakfast was right up my alley. Okay, yes, the salmon was dry, but dry salmon has its time and place, and it all contributed to the true Asian breakfast feel. Perhaps mine was slightly less authentic given that I chose tofu over natto, but it was a close enough approximation. Surprisingly, breakfast boy sprung for the okonomiyaki instead of the usual 2 egg/mystery meat/toast deal, which was proclaimed to be tasty and filling. I also had a matcha latte, which was delicious (and decorated with latte art!) but a bit lukewarm. Breakfast boy had an Americano which was deemed satisfactory. Service was super friendly and prices are reasonable. Ambiance is bright, clean, and pleasant. There are "specials" every day, which are written up on one of the many sandwich boards parked outside the cafe. If you sit by the window, the sandwich boards make for excellent people watching as it's almost guaranteed that people will stop to peruse (I don't mean this in a creepy way...or do I?). The last time I was there, I remember seeing a sign that they're having some sort of celebration for their one year anniversary, which I believe is happening this week. If my memory serves me correctly, all menu items are 10% off for a limited time! But don't quote me on that one. read more

I love the vibe of this little cafe. Rain or shine, the jazz music with soothe you from the time you walk in. It's a small space, but I like how the tables are big and the chairs spacious so that you don't feel like there isn't enough room. Even if you have to wait for a table, there are plenty of current magazines and newspapers to browse through while waiting for a table to free up. Since I always have trouble deciding between eastern and western food, Marulili gives me the best of both worlds. Glad we tried it but probably wouldn't be back. The staff are very sweet and friendly so you can't be mad but the service is pretty laughable, like actually be ready to just roll with it. They had forgotten 2 orders when we were in there alone, very apologetic and sweet, but clearly someone needs to help these people get a little more organized. I had the Okonomiyaki, it's awesome, if that is your thing it's worth putting up with everything else. My husband had the traditional breakfast and waffle, nothing special.
