Having been holed in for months, we were craving some ramen for a very long time. So we decided to lookup the best Ramen joints in the area and stumbled upon this place. We have already been to Toki Underground, so we were looking for a different place that had inside seating in a very well managed and socially distanced setting. The decor and the vibe of this place was very hipster from the outside and inside. I tried the Godzilla bowl (noodles on the side) the broth had a nice kick to it and the noodles were chewy. Wasn't too impressed with the Shoyu, it was smokey but a little too chewy! The broth was missing the depth you get when it boils for hours. Also tried the seafood Okonomiyaki, the sauce was a little too sweet for our liking. Tried a tempura fried roll (spicy tuna), it was average. Marumen used to be our favorite spot to get Ramen outside of downtown. Unfortunately, our last two experiences have been quite disappointing. The broth that used to be extremely flavorful in now below average and the service has turned into quite a disappointment. When we arrived there were a number of empty tables where food had yet to be cleared. It took over 5 min before a waiter even showed up. We ordered Edamame as a starter and received this very tiny portion of cold edamame after our Ramen was served. Both our Miso and Spicy Miso Ramen were disappointing. They mentioned they had to change their Miso provider but the new flavor is not even close. Pretty good spot for ramen if you're looking for some casual eats. We started with the pork and spicy chicken buns for appetizers. The meats were cooked well and flavorful, but I thought the actual bao bun was a bit overdone - not as light and fluffy as a bao can be. Marumen has a decent selection of broth flavors: shio, miso, spicy miso, curry, as well as some speciality flavored ones. I personally always enjoy a classic tonkatsu or spicy tonkatsu, but was surprised when this wasn't offered on the menu. I ordered the shio (sea salt) ramen, and my friend got the specialty braised short rib. The braised short rib broth is on the heavier side, and is strong on the tomato flavor of the broth. The portion of the ramens felt a bit mismatched. You're only given half an egg but the char sui definitely made up for some of it. They give you a nice thick piece. It was flavorful and fatty and just the best part of the ramen. The tsukemen was not really tsukemen unfortunately. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of thickness in the broth, it didn't cling to the noodles that well and I ended up just dumping the whole thing in. The flavor of the broth however was fine. The kaarage was the star of the meal. It was delicious and the portion was good. The restaurant was nice, cozy and clean. The service was minimal. Overall, it wasn't too bad of an experience. My friends for the Army Ramen Special, which is the Korean army stew with ramen. It had a good amount of spam and meat but the soup base wasn't super strong and spicy. I am a big fan of Japanese style ramen. This place offers some hybrid bowls like the army soup which combines Korean style with Japanese ramen. Jinya (right down the street) definitely is better in terms of the deep flavor of the broth. However it is always packed and there is always a long line. I like the location and if you go early enough you can skip all the lines. I am a big fan of the spicy beef short rib... but the meat is dry and tastes frozen. I much prefer the triple pork belly. So I would order this soup and ask them to replace the meat with the pork belly. The Karaage is a great plate to share with the whole table and large enough to share if everyone gets their own ramen. Tasty ramen and really friendly servers! The decor is pretty casual (it reminded me of an Applebee's for some reason?) and loud with music and conversation. On a weekend evening we waited about 30 minutes to be seated and they gave us a call to let us know our tables were ready! I had the spicy miso and tried the tonkotsu ramen and they were both delicious, albeit pretty skimpy on the toppings when compared to other ramen spots. My only complaint was that the bamboo shoots and corn were cold like it just came out of a jar in the fridge,,,,, which was pretty disappointing but did not take away from the flavor of the soup. You do have to spend the extra money on additional toppings as they don't provide any toppings other than the one specifically listed on the menu item, so just keep in mind it gets pricier if you want a fully decorated bowl of ramen. They do give you complementary edamame though which was nice. The servers were nice like I said but they did forget an item in my order and I had to get it taken out of the check. In my past experiences, the service at Marumen has been great. Until today. We arrived around 8:10pm and were sat at a booth. We did not receive any sort of service for at least 20 minutes, until the server finally noticed us and took our orders. Nothing complicated, just a bowl of ramen and donburi. We were waiting for at least 30 more minutes, expecting our food. Other customers came and went while we waited. No sign of our server. I understand restaurants can be short staffed and busy. But the fact that a group that came in after us, ordered three bowls of ramen, and were served before us, is outrageous! It was 9pm, almost an hour after our arrival, when I went up to the front counter to inquire about the order. It turns out, our order was not placed until 8:54pm! SIX minutes ago. Almost an hour of waiting to find out the order never made it to the kitchen. That is unacceptable. When our food finally arrived, we immediately asked for to go boxes and the check. The staff did not seemed bothered by this situation at all. I will be hesitant to come back to Marumen after this disastrous situation. It's finally ramen season again!! I've been on the hunt for good ramen places, especially one that doesn't require me to metro to DC or wait forever. I was passing in the area, and a friend recommended this place for stellar ramen. I ordered the miso ramen along with pork buns. The pork buns were delicious!!! I loved their pork belly. The ramen was pretty good. The broth was definitely saltier than most places, and on the thicker side. Their noodles are crispy and fresh, their pork belly was also amazing, and a delicious egg. I felt like they didn't skimp out on portion, like there were enough noodles! The place has super cute ambience with their lights and stuff. The restaurant was busy around 730p on Saturday, but their staff are efficient and friendly. You can tell a lot of people in the restaurant are returning and loyal customers based on how quick they order and know what they want. They start you off with some complimentary edamame, which is very nice. Chicken Karaage was pretty delicious and great for sharing if you're with a group of friends! The portions were big I would say, I could only finish half and had to take the other home for later. And chasu chunks(?) - Price Compare to the price, the portion is more than enough especially the extra noodle. I can tell that you get what you pay for only based on the portion. The bottom line is that service was great. The cleanness of the restaurant was 5 out of 5, BUT the dishes were just too disappointing.
