Normally when I receive unsatisfactory service, I write the company direct to help them educate their employees on what went wrong. However, today was one that I cannot just leave here. We went to lunch on McFarland Road and ordered at 12:11 pm 2 soups and water. Your establishment was busy, and Taylor was at the register doing a fine job. We sat and waited for our order, and after 35 minutes, when others who had come in 15-18 minutes after us were getting their food, my wife walked up to the counter to ask if our order was ready. She was met by a girl who stated with a snarky tone that "We are really busy and I can't do anything". My wife asked again if it would be much longer and handed her our ticket, and she responded, " I told you we are extremely busy and it will come". My wife asked her what her name was, and she replied with an attitude, Marlin. This is not good customer service, even though you are busy. Courtesy would have been to reply, " I will check, or I will get an answer for you". Our food eventually arrived as we were getting up to request a refund. At 12:45, a full 34 minutes later, it arrived for just 2 soups. I retired as a firefighter in Rockford, and in all my 27 years of connecting with the citizens and people we swore to protect, never did I put my problems on their shoulders. I hope that "Marlin" receives remediation, at minimum a reprimand, and is reminded that the customer is who pays the bills and refers others to your establishment. On a side note, my Beef Chili was tepid at best, and we had to ask for our potato chips after receiving our food. read more

We went Mary's Market for the first time, it is a bit confusing when you go in, the door on the side closest to State St takes you into a sit down restaurant with full table service, the entrance on the other side takes you into a counter service type restaurant. We entered the counter service door and walked through to the table service area. They share the same menu it's just one side you have a waitress who delivers everything to you the other side you order at the counter and get your own drinks, silverware and such. There were several things on the menu that looked good so we tried several things. One ordered a Cubano sandwich which came with 1 side, so caprese pasta salad was chosen. The Cubano was not like any I have had which is fine however the pork was not a slice of pork it was a pile of meat that tasted like dark meat turkey, it was supposed to have stone ground mustard which i had one little tiny dot on one side so it seemed rather dry. The caprese salad was very good and really unique. We ordered a cup of chicken soup, which I would not do again as it cost $6.29 and had 2 noodles, 1 little piece of chicken the rest was celery carrots and a very spicy broth. The other meal ordered was a tuna melt. Larina, our waitress, took 15 min to touch base with us after we got sat. We were waiting on someone in the bathroom so we asked her to circle back in 5 min. We then got neglected for 30min without even getting water. We finally put our order in and had to repeat it a few times to her. We got coffee and a chai. My gal ordered the chicken pot pie. It was dry, flavorless, and we had to return it and ask for something else. It couldn't be eaten, it was really bad. I had a Reuben sandwich and longed for a bowl of their French onion soup which was always fabulous. The sandwich size is about half of what I recall, it would've been a nice half sandwich, but not a whole sandwich for the money. I asked for extra Swiss cheese. I didn't get any. It had hardly any. Maybe one slice of corned beef, small sandwich, hardly any good ingredients, not good at all. The French onion soup? Massive disappointment. The recipe has changed, it also was barely flavorless but at least it was hot. Must've had tons of salt I was excruciatingly thirsty all day afterwards. I have enjoyed this place in the past. I was too excited to eat at this place- and when we finally made time to go, it was a disappointment. We were the only ones standing and waiting to be seated. The girl behind the counter said, give me a few minutes and walked away. We waited for about 20 minutes until the busboy came to us and asked if we were picking up or eating in. We had 25 people for an 80th birthday party in a private room with a fixed menu. 3/4 of us got food and were essentially finished eating before the remaining people were served. Even though our reservations and menu were set 3 weeks in advance, they didn't have enough buns to serve the pulled pork sandwiches on and asked several guests to consider an alternative choice of bread. We had to bus our own dishes in order to transition from lunch to dessert because no one came in to do it. Our waitress essentially came in to take our order and drop off the bill. Mary's market isn't what it used to be. We waited at the hostess station for five minutes before anyone sat us and then waited an additional 10 minutes for anybody to acknowledge us at the table. There were only five other tables in the whole restaurant that had patrons at them. The four of us ordered two sandwiches with sides and two of us had soup. The menu states that soups come with bread and when ours didn't come with any bread, we had to ask about it. Our waitress said that they were out of bread but if she had time, she would go cut some for us. It never happened. The waitress told us that they were out of the soup of the day when she brought us our food and that we should to pick another soup because while she could warm up some more, but it would take a long time. Not once were our water glasses filled, we were there for over an hour and our drink order never taken. A sandwich was missing banana peppers which we asked for immediately upon seeing it was missing and our server said that she would have to ask the cooks for it. Had the gourmet vegetable stack sandwich and was disappointed. The worst veggie sandwich I ever ate at a restaurant. The sandwich included one piece of lettuce, slice of cumber, top half of the green pepper that was not sliced to eat, two slices of cheese (because it came with 2 types) and a small amount of the mustard spread. There was no tomato and the bread disintegrated as I ate it. The sweet potato and tomato soup was flavorful though. We had to wait for the five employees standing near the entrance working to acknowledge us and weren't sure if they knew we were waiting to be seated. They offer such a huge variety of options, they have an attached bakery, their coffee is amazing, and their staff is always very welcoming and attentive. I especially appreciate their Vegetarian options. They have a Vegetarian "club" that is really good. Their roasted beet salad is always amazing as well. I definitely recommend giving Mary's Market a try if you have not already. *My only concern for todays visit was that my server didn't seem to understand that chicken broth makes a soup not vegetarian. Someone to make it was found, then help sought to ring it up because the menu changed the day before and the cash register wasn't updated. Unfortunately, we will not be using Mary's Market for future parties. We've consistently used their catering services for showers and other events. In placing an online catering order with their app (which I highly recommend not doing), the order came through wrong. And, according to the individual I spoke with on the phone, it is not their fault, it's the app's fault. It is astonishing to me this was feedback we were provided. Why are we not working through a solution, but instead blaming an app, vs taking accountability for a system the restaurant has clearly purchased to service their customers? Not only did we receive 1/5 of the Baby Shower catering order, the lunch was delayed (due to the team having to prepare a number of wraps to make up for the "apps fault."). Each wrap cost 12.95, YES 13 dollars for ONE WRAP that comes with no sides, and in addition to paying a premium for a catered shower, the only remediation Mary's Market provided my family was with a "free tray of cookies," 11 days after my sister's shower. I'm in sales, and I'd be fired if I treated a customer this way. The way to maintain long term customers, and recommendations is to make things right. I'm not asking for my money back, I simply asked for a discount as we were not provided with the service in which we paid. I got the Turkey Club wrap ($11ish, I didn't realize until later that this included the sides so when I asked, I declined sides thinking it was extra cost) and let me tell you, it's easily the best wrap of any kind I've ever had in my life. I placed a catering order for a taco bar on 7.22.22 and paid in full. I confirmed my order a week before the 8.20.22 event. The night of my party, no one showed. I called and was told the catering people were gone and there was no record of my order. I had a house full of people and nothing to feed them. We ended up ordering pizza and salads. I was unable to speak with anyone from the catering department for several days after the event. When I finally spoke with someone, I was told they put me on the calendar for 9.20.22 not 8.20.22. Down a way from the main stretch of chain restaurants in Rockford is Aunt Mary's, we almost didn't eat here...and almost made a BIG mistake. This place gets very busy on the weekends, but it moves very fast - it's a well oiled machine - but we never felt rushed. Staff was very friendly, very efficient. As others have mentioned, it definitely has a classic diner feel to it. The food is really, really good. Bottomless coffee, everything made fresh, and the portions are huge! Several skillets to choose from, which I loved, all kinds of pancakes, toast options - so much that it took a while for me to pick! In the end I went with a skillet, which I couldn't finish because it was so much food - with the potatoes mixed with veggies and cheese, toast, etc...was too much! I had enough for lunch later that day! Prices were very reasonable considering the amount of food we received. This iconic Rockford eatery has just changed ownership, and Stephanie Koch (and her husband), the new owners, know what they are doing. On my three meals there on my semi-annual trip to Rockford, I discovered the unique and upscale menu items are still intact, the atmosphere, though a bit "under new management" feeling, is attentive and accomodating, and the changes being made should prove very successful--such as closing the stand alone cafe on the ground of Aunt Mary's and consolidating the two restaurants under on roof and one name, without losing the charm of either concept. The cafe, now in house, still has the same menu, and the self serve options for a quick breakfast, lunch or coffee meeting. And, the full-service restaurant side still offers a busy clientele a respite from the everyday. Kudos to Stephanie. I will look forward to seeing her progress on my October visit. Because, a visit to Rockford just isn't the same without Mary's Market. We wish the new owners huge success. read more
