HOTEL GUEST FREE BREAKFAST REVIEW Our stay at Penn Wells Hotel in downtown Wellsboro, PA, included complementary breakfast each morning. It was provided in the farthest partition of the large dining room, immediately outside the kitchen door. It was available daily between 7-10 a.m. The dining room was mahogany wall covered with B&W photos of past events and celebrities of the 19th and early 20th Century, and paintings by local artists. It wasn't bad as a gallery of historic personalities and moments in the long life of this hotel, and its status as the coolest place to be seen in town. Breakfast itself was decent, but far from outstanding. As the saying goes; "You're paying for the atmosphere," if , in fact, you're paying at all. The menu consisted of instant scrambled eggs, brown & serve morning sausage, bread/bagels/muffins, cups of yogurt, fresh fruit, instant oatmeal and Starbucks coffee. Buffet style, you can return for as much as you wanted. I didn't load up due to my physical plans for each day, but ate enough to know it was all satisfying and filling; especially the java. It was a good place to start the day. There was plenty of room. We were allowed to sit anywhere in the large dining room, and the chafing trays were kept warm and refilled. The salmon was excellent done with a light orange sauce. Our server was attentive and friendly. The ambiance was a nostalgic holistically well maintained building with music that fit the environment. We also enjoyed learning about the history of the hotel and the community through pictures and stories. Highly recommend. read more

We just got back from one of the worst meals we have had. We both ordered what the menu described was the Sirloin Strip Steak and Sautéed Jumbo Shrimp. What we received was a super tough piece of meat shaped like a small childs fist that we could barely cut with a steak knife and about 4 very small shrimp. Ordered "pink" the meat came with a very well done exterior on all four sides with an almost raw center. A sirloin strip steak is shaped like "strip", not a lump. When I asked the waitress if this was the strip steak, she answered "she supposed so". The vegetable of the day was green beans which were boiled to death and a dull gray green. When our server checked on us asking if we were enjoying our meal, we told her that "this was the toughest steak we've ever had". I like supporting small business and local restaurants, but this was really pretty bad. No one came to the table to address our concerns. The server was polite and gracious and the small salad was actually pretty good. The Blue Cheese dressing was excellent. Shame on the restaurant for basically doing a bait and switch! I wish I had taken pictures to show you exactly what we received, it would have been proof positive. read more

We were pleasantly surprised. The prices were very reasonable and the food was a nice quality. The rolls are fresh made and very soft. My husband had the sirloin with shrimp. By the end of the night he was too full for the shrimp, but he really enjoyed the steak. I had the bruschetta chicken with French onion soup and a side salad with ranch. I enjoyed it all and the dressing tasted house made. We had a bottle of wine with our meal and were surprised by the low price. The service was good, our sever was very pleasant and friendly. Be advised, you do need a reservation. We will definitely eat here again on future trips to Wellsboro. read more

We had some very good food out in their courtyard on our pre Pine Creek Gorge backpacking stay. The wait for a table was VERY long but our server and food were both great. The Chipotle seafood pasta in particular seems like a signature item. Such a great variety of seafood including tiny tender scallops. I loved it. read more

Awesome place to eat and stay. Very cool historic building, in the heart of Wellsboro that has been maintained excellently. Good meals, cool historic bar menu with some classic drinks that keep with the theme. Absolutely delicious with wonderful service and very clean and safe measures in the midst of the COVID-19 reopenings. We started with Spinach and Artichoke Dip, then had started House Salads that came with out entrees (AMAZING balsamic vinaigrette), and finished off the night with two amazing entrees: Citrus Salmon and Chipotle Seafood Pasta. read more

I'm going to try to give this place a fair review. My bf and I took a weekend getaway to the Wellsboro area this past weekend. We had a lovely stay at the Penn Wells Hotel and decided to eat at the restaurant on Sunday evening. We ordered online for dining room pick up only. They had a lovely selection, and we were given a 30 min pick up time (plenty of time to make our meals and appetizers). We ordered onion rings, perogies, a burger and chicken Parmesan. After about 35 min we walked down and were greeted by a very grumpy blonde. She was clearly frustrated that she had to go look for our meals on a busy evening. I'm sure COVID has stressed them out, but then she took her time before walking to the back, but not before complaining that someone else made a telephone order, and complaining to the other staff (in front of guests) making us feel like we were quite the nuisance. I know we all have bad days, but the people who are guests, shouldn't know that. There aren't a whole lot of fine dining choices, so maybe that's just the culture there, because they can get away with it. The food was pretty good, but if we ever go back, the service we received will ensure we will skip the Mary Wells Dining room and order pizza instead. I'm sure the culture of a restaurant is difficult to control, but the hostess, did not have the mostess last night if you're looking for reviews for other places in Wellsboro see my other reviews, I have some great suggestions. read more

Great food and ambiance! A novelty that should be experienced if you visit Wellsboro. Service, however, was metiocre and mixed drinks didn't match the quality of the food. I would eat there again and am recommending to others. read more

Great to have this hotel and dining room in Wellsboro. It's like eating during a history lesson. The old pictures of Wellsboro are displayed beautifully. Pretty quite on a Wednesday evening. What an awful experience we had at dinner tonight. First off we sat for over 15 minutes waiting for a waitress to take our order. She screwed it up. It took over one half hour for the wrong, lousy, food to arrive. Wrong main course. The desert we desired was not available. In all, it was one awful dinner, from service to the quality of the food. read more

Really good restaurant in a historic hotel. Lots of cool old pictures from the town with handouts at the reception desks that list descriptions of the photos and a history of the hotel. Groucho Marx and Joan Crawford all came through back in the day. I skipped dessert at the Penn Wells though and headed over to the diner for some of their pie afterwards. read more

First time to Wellsboro, first time to Mary Wells. We started with the Crab Dip, we all had fresh salads, and then I had the Shrimp Scampi. Food was fresh and well prepared, service was very good, and the atmosphere had a historic feel. My family enjoyed their meals also. We were to full for desert. From the vodka martini (dry &dirty) right through to coffee and dessert it was wonderful! My entree was Chipotle Seafood and the dessert was strawberry tart(must have!). The service was prompt and consistent! Great historic atmosphere. read more

Just Fantastic. Sunday brunch was really nice. Considering we don't usually like buffets. Everything from the waitstaff to the food to the facility was first class. Double thumbs up to the two young men making the omelets. All of the food was properly prepared and wonderfully tasty. Have no illusion this place is a class act,and true to it's heritage. I've been here a couple of times, and I've really enjoyed myself. I always go with my mom and sister. The inside has an old-timey classy vibe to it. The staff is really friendly and our food arrived quickly. The day we went they were serving lunch in the lounge and we got to sit right in front of the fireplace. It was very toasty and nice. The only bad thing that I can say is that their chicken ceasar wrap is way too fishy. It tasted like I was eating a fish wrap rather than a chicken wrap. read more

Very good restaurant in an older hotel centrally located on a gas lit Main Street that time seems to have passed by. The lobby and dining room are pleasantly decorated in a traditional style from the early 1900s. White table cloths give the dining room a formal ambience, but the clientele are generally informal and represent a mixture of locals who dine here often and tourists visiting this charming mountain town. The menu contains a pleasant mixture of seafood, steaks, and pasta accompanied by a strong selection of appetizers and salads. Prices are generally moderate and service is friendly. Cooking is supervised by a well regarded local chef who moved to the hotel from a popular upscale restaurant in nearby Mansfield. Certainly one of the best options for a date or family meal in north central Pennsylvania. read more

This is a review of the Mary Wells lounge. It was cozy and comfortable. The food was the same as the dining room and was delicious. Had the Penn Wells Signature salad and a crab cake sandwich. The salad had fresh mixed greens along with dried and fresh fruit and candied pecans. The balsamic dressing was a great compliment. Tangy to balance the sweet fruit. The crab sandwich was of good quality crab with a nice balance of spices. read more

Food is usually very good. Price a little on the high side but not terrible. Service this is their weakness, service is usually pretty slow. They have a pretty good selection of bottled beers and about five on tap yuengling is always on tap the others float. read more

Beautiful and historic building, but run by a family that monopolized the town. It's cheap and the food reflects that. There's no love in the food. I hear that a new chef has come in a revamped the menu, but I haven't heard much of anything to rav about. read more

We had my husbands Christmas party from work there, the meal was over priced at $30.00 per person for a small salad 1 dinner roll, carrots, corn, potatoes, chicken which was under cooked and tasteless and pork which was also not only tasteless but dry and tough, our drink was water or coffee which when we asked a wait staff for coffee we were told they would be around to see who wanted coffee...that never happened and when we did manage to flag some one down the coffee was very strong and tasted burnt, so we will not be going back, Mc Donalds would have been better!! read more
