Wow, what a treat. The owners (husband & wife) were incredibly friendly as they served our meal, telling stories & sharing their experiences with our family. All food is freshly made so it takes a few minutes, with all fresh ingredients. We had the samosas and two entrées, all of the food was VERY good. The dining space is very limited, two tables in what is basically a little mini mart. Will definitely be back, possibly take out next time, though we would be disappointed to miss out on the conversation. Masala Box is an outstanding culinary find ,in a completely unlikely setting. The food is plentiful, delicious and fresh. Vijay makes the naan and the samosas fresh every day, and they are fantastic. The chicken masala curry was some of the best Indian food I have ever tasted. Obviously the setting is downscale, but that makes the food that much better. Vijay and his wife are engaging conversationalists, and are part of the draw. This is a place where you want them to do well but you don't' want to tell your friends because it will get overrun. :) read more

I've been meaning to try Masala box for the last year and a half, and I finally did tonight. I regret that I ever waited this long! I love Indian food, but typically I only frequent places that do the stereotypical Chicken Tika Masala or lamb vindaloo because I never know what else to order. I called the restaurant to ask what they recommend, the owner described each entree to me and told me that they are dishes specific to where he lives. We got the Chicken Masala, the Chicken Aloo, and somosas. All AMAZING. The Chicken Aloo comes in only "spicy hot" and it did not disappoint. I put hot sauce on everything, and my mouth is currently the perfect amount on fire. I will definitely be going back soon! read more

We had the chicken Masada, rice, and a mango Lassi. The food is delicious. You can order the spice level at mild, medium, or spicy.

The portions are great. The owner was very friendly. But the food was only OK. The naan was very greasy and the samosas were overly dry. The saag was a small amount on top of a lot of rice. IT was good food from a hole in the wall at a good price. I hope this place keeps going strong. But I worry that my next review may be downgrading it further. read more

You'd damn near miss this place if you weren't really looking for it. We, however, were. I strongly doubted that this deli was located inside a convenience store, but when I opened the car door, the aroma of savory, spicy, curry drew me in and I knew we had arrived at the correct destination. Don't be thrown off by the location. This is a mom and pop type of deal. And it's probably some of the best curry we've had. Claire likes her curry spicy, and much of the time she's left with a countenance that reads "what the hell is this?". Not here. THIS, to us, is comfort food. Soul food. Delicious, filling, warming, and multidimensional in flavor. The price? Wait for it... Eight dollars for a large. And a large can easily feed you for two nights in a row- they are EXTREMELY generous. The owner knew that we were coming from Gresham, so waited until I arrived to pour the meal into the take-out container in hopes that it would be the perfect temperature when we got home. The people here are so extremely kind, you can only hope that this develops into a bigger restaurant and takes all of the Portland metro area by storm. Can't believe we found this gem hidden in the Milwaukie/Oak Grove area. Tucked away down Thiessen road is a little convenience store with some fantastic Indian grub. The owners were both very welcoming and pretty hilarious, they have lots of stories to tell! This self proclaimed "very old mom and pop" restaurant (again, their statement) was authentic, inexpensive and tasty. We ordered one large chicken curry meal with four samosas for a grand total of $14. The owners shared some stories with us about their business and made us laugh while we waited for our food. Within minutes we were given our boxes of goodies and we were on our way home. The food is spectacular- not too spicy but still has plenty of flavor. I was stuffed after my moderate portion- my husband gladly took over for me a finished my plate in addition to his own portion of the curry. The samosas were pure HEAVEN- the best I've had in a very long time. A fantastic place to pick up a lunch or dinner-made by a kind couple who know how to make a good curry. 4 stars for the samosas which were very good. The food was very average but large portions. Things are a bit different and perhaps the large menu and variety of things they're doing (minimart, cigarettes, alcohol, lottery, etc) impact quality. For instance curry put directly on rice - these should always be separated, as it creates a soggy mess. The food and mango lassis weren't good and didn't taste right, lassi was the wrong consistency, seemed somehow watered down, and naan slightly burnt. Rice was fine but soggy from the gravy. When I asked if they had palak paneer I was told paneer isn't Indian but American - it did come to India from Persia thousand+ years back but why not just say you don't have it? read more

Avoid this place. It is rare to find a place run by people so unconcerned about their customers, their appearance, or their income. All indications point to the business model for this small shack having been transcribed from a failed episode of Seinfeld. There is exactly one lunch location within cycling range of my office, and this is it. After the prior occupants moved out into a full-time, and very successful, Thai restaurant, I decided to pedal my way over here to sample the fare. Given the other reviews here, I was quite excited. Problems for cyclists are many. Primary among those problems, I would wager, is the tendency for our bicycles to wander off on their own when left outside - especially on busy streets with no other businesses around. Here there are exactly zero places to lock the bike on the outside of the establishment, so I wheeled mine in, discovering a large, unused space comprising nearly half of the structure. Perfect. The proprietor greeted me by loudly informing me that I should not worry about leaving my bike outside, as he has plenty of cameras, and would be able to successfully stop any thief. I thanked him politely, told him I would prefer not to chase anyone, showed him my U-lock, pointed out the inability for me to secure my bike, thanked him for his patience, and tried to place my order. He became insistent, and then belligerent. After all, he said, if he were to allow one businessman in the middle of the day to park his bicycle inside, he would somehow be bound by an unwritten code requiring him to allow any degenerate children from the neighborhood - his words - to do the same. It would be a safety hazard, he explained, gesturing toward the half of the building entirely occupied by random tables, an unused food-service cooler, huge bags of empty soda bottles, seven chairs, and two shabby looking tables arranged in a fashion only Picasso could be proud of. I explained to him that this made no sense to me, and that he might reconsider in the name of daily business from, say, Portland residents. He would not budge, and I left. I returned shortly thereafter, driving a much more "appropriate" vehicle, parked carefully in the clearly marked spaces in the parking lot, and entered the store. I again tried to place an order, as I took a picture of the aforementioned piles of random equipment for this review. The proprietor became enraged, informing me through a smile so forced that I feared for his imminent aneurysm that I was being recorded, and I was not allowed to take pictures. I apologized and, putting my camera away, tried once more to place my order. No luck. Apparently all that was available on today's menu was an unending tirade about the neighborhood children, and their annoying tendency to want to spend their parents' middle-class money only after parking their bikes in a part of the store through which no one actually ventures, and how the safety of his customers could be severely threatened by such parking - one can only assume he fears customers beating too close to the traps with which he has lined that area of the store. Let me make this perfectly clear: the main entrance to the store, and all of the items actually for sale, are in the eastern half of this building. There is another door, which lies across the aforementioned wasteland of restaurant equipment, and his concern for this oily, unswept mockery of a self-storage locker is greater than his concern for selling his product. I had deeply hoped to end this review with a statement that all of this would be worth it, as the food is excellent - but I have been here three times now, and have yet to be actually served. Congratulations, pursuer of the American dream. You have successfully converted a lunchtime cyclist into another grumpy car driver. I look forward to the inevitable next iteration of this restaurant. Hopefully the next owners have less money stashed away, and are more interested in serving their customers. read more

If you want authentic Indian food and don't have a food cart in your neighborhood, you'll have to stop at this market between Milwaukie and Gladstone. While the market is standard, they have a deli inside with homemade Indian food. The best Indian food takeout in the area (possibly the only one). So pass up Subway and McDonald's and check it out. You get a lot of food for the price. Love their food and menu and will come back again and again. Prices are as great as the proportions! Real authentic, real Indian! This is a recently opened, very nice little Convenience store/Indian food shop tucked away a bit off the street in the Beautiful Downtown Gladstone, the place that time forgot. They have a small but select menu of quite delicious Indian food to go, or you can eat there. They have four tables inside and one outside. The owner is a delightfully friendly chap from India who will gladly explain the menu, the history of Indian food, why things are called what they are, the cuisines of different geographic areas in India, where he is from, why he came here, etc etc etc. They do not have dairy or gluten in their shop and all dishes are Vegan except the Chicken Curry and Shrimp Vindaloo. They have micro brews on tap, and a wide selection of beer and wine in their small cooler. This is a great spot for lunch and I'm sure since I live close by I will be picking up food to go often here. read more

I had a small chicken masala curry (comes with rice) and added a naan. The proprietor was kind and enthusiastic. The menu is made up of just a handful of options and it's all homemade so there as a little bit of a wait but he informed us of the exact time it would be ready and we went to the comic book store around the corner. You could order a head to avoid this but we weren't bothered. The food was ready to go when we went back in and it was delicious! This place is text book hole in the wall but definitely a GEM!!! So, the place is in Gladstone OR, not the culinary place for food, put this place is amazing. It is basically a take out restaurant, with a beer cooler as large as the place itself. The resurant is a mom and pop operations that serves the real thing . The chicken curry we ordered was a large and it had all the spices you would want and smell in a Indian dish. The take out we had could easily serve 3 to 4 persons. The food is great and if you want to you could eat I the restaurant but you will se a lot of people coming in. It only has about 4 table and 6 chair, along with a big screen tv, sorry there was no Bollywood movies on the telley. The food is hot the propieter was very friendly and helpful. The menu is not extensive but give you a variety of items like shrip, and fish. Worth the money and I expect that they will move to have a bigger place. Definitely a place to go to. read more

I'm all about service over food, but both are exceptional here! The deli is located in the S&M Convenience Store. The chicken curry and the samosas were delicious. The spices weren't dull or overbearing...just right! Plus you get a huge amount of food at a very low price. However, the best thing about this place are the owners. They are the sweetest couple who spent a good amount of time sharing with me how to navigate Portland by public transportation. He even drew a map for me! We chanced upon this place after searching for Indian food in Portland. The yelp reviews were good, so we decided to take a chance and I'm so glad we did. It is a small, deli style place, run by a very friendly couple. They have a limited menu, but the food looks and tastes great. We ordered pretty much everything on the menu (hungry bunch after a day of shopping) - chicken aloo on parantha, salmon curry, chana masala, saag and eggplant. All the dishes had home cooked simplicity, weren't overly spicy or oily (as some Indian restaurants in US tend to be) and the paranthas were out of the world good - crisp and freshly made. Absolutely loved the food. The owners were very friendly and accommodative of our needs, keeping the place open a little beyond their hours even. I would definitely recommend Masala Box if you are looking for simple yet delicious Indian food while in Portland. read more

Little Indian restaurant, in a converted gas station. I'm not sure that I'd like to eat there- not much atmosphere and with just a couple tables there's a fishbowl feel, but takeout is easy. The menu is not big; the food is really good. Had the vegan options- samosa, naan, chickpeas and eggplant. Everything was delicious, and the portions were really big.
