One of my all time favorite places to go. Their major con: it's just too over priced. I used to come here a lot about 5 years ago. Now, I only go when I absolutely have a craving for it. I remember the entrees only being around 10/11$'s. Now they're around $15/16. That would be my ONLY MAJOR complaint. Appetizers: Papad cups are always tastey, I love the sauce. Samosas: we usually order the lamb or potatoes. They're always delicious. Naan: I'm not a big fan of the lamb naan, the garlic is by far my fave. Drinks: The alcoholic drinks are always great, strong enough but you don't just taste the liquor. Entree: Chicken tandoori: the only thing my husband eats since he doesn't like curry and he enjoys it Bangin Bartha: it used to be my favorite vegetarian dish but it's been tasting different lately. Not a good different. The nine jewels, and khadhi Punjabi are probably my go to dishes. Dessert: make room for it!! Big city taste, ambiance... & prices! Started with an awesome blackberry mojito ($5 special), followed by garlic naan & chicken korma. The food was all very good, although the chicken was a little "fatty" for my taste. I'd opt for the lamb next time, in hopes of a little leaner meat, and consider sharing a meal, as I ate only half of it. Scott provided excellent service, and the ambiance was top-notch. You know , There are certain times to be in almost complete darkness. When you're about to go to bed or maybe watch a movie but not when your about to eat . I went into the restaurant an hour before they closed and it was so dark in there it actually hurt my eyes while they were readjusting. We sat down next to a window and finally we could see the rest of the room . It's a large space that has quiet music and not much of an interesting interior. Our server was slow and not enthusiastic and I think that's where it all started to go downhill . Everything we ordered or did seemed like a hassle . The naan was yummy but if I'm paying extra for butter , jesus put some butter on there . That was when I noticed the prices ! We ended up splitting a dish because of how outrageous the prices were. 16.50 for tiki masala ( I am going to include a picture of the portion ) and to be served with parchment paper on the table for easy cleanup or to avoid making your table clothes dirty ? Geez. Nothing says more low end , money grubbing to me. I was so angry at this point . Then our food came out and while it tasted okay I was upset at the portion size. The chicken tasted like it was boiled and then put into the sauce . Like dry and saucy ? Soft still and reasonable. We ordered a garlic naan too and I really feel like it could have been enhanced with some salt. It was like eating a straight up garlic clove. Overall , I wouldn't bring a date here and would go to costco and eat the tikki masala they sell there for like 12 bucks and you get two bags (roughly 16oz) of pure tikki masala goodness. Excellent choice for Indian food when visiting Lafayette LA. The food is fairly authentic. I had the saag paneer medium spicy and it was outstanding! Right consistency, beautifully blended flavors and nicely served with basmati rice and some garlic naan. Service was also great. It could use some draft beer but the choices of bottled beers is decent. Overall, nice place for Indian food. read more

Had a rather piss-poor first experience there. The waitress was terrible. She knew nothing of the menu and when we ordered the tapas, we ordered 5....like it says to. it wasn't until she handed us the bill after the 4th one that we caught on that the soup was included as one. she argued the fact and we eventually had to get a manager. she tried to talk us out of talking to a manager. he came over and smoothed everything over, said that the menu was a little confusing and that it would need to be reprinted to make things clearer....or at least educate the staff. he gave us a free dessert. We both really really love Indian food and despite our first encounter, we gave it another shot. Pretty decent overall, but like others said, expensive. We had the naan and samosas. My kids mauled the samosas. I had the butter chicken because I had to compare it to my recipe (for the record, mine is better) and my husband had the tandoori chicken. The butter chicken was good, nothing to write home about, but good. I found the sauce maybe a little bland. The tandoori chicken was great. Kids both had tandoori chicken and they loved it. They have a pretty decent selection of drinks too. We would definitely go again and are waiting for an opportunity to go to the lunch buffet. read more

I'll start by saying that I rarely leave reviews, however this establishment is, by far, the most deserving of a perfect 5 star rating. Yes, the food was excellent, but most importantly, the staff and owner are what made our night wonderful. The proprietor came to our table to ensure we had all we needed, and when asked about suggestions for our meal, he was more than pleased to help us with our selections.... and he was spot on! It's like you took a trip to India. I love the lettuce papad cups for appetizers and I love the paneer mater and buttered chicken. My husband loves to lamb korma. My first visit here, and I was impressed with the quality of the food, particularly the rice. We started with Chicken 65 which was a perfect appetizer. It seemed a little unusual to be asked how hot I wanted my Chicken Vindaloo, but I went with "Hot" from the choices of Mild, Medium, Hot or Indian Hot. Having grown up in an English town with a large Pakistani community, I like my Indian food hot, so I went with Hot. It wasn't very hot, but they brought me a little pot of chilli paste to liven things up a bit. The rice was extra special - usually I am not a fan of rice but the rice in here was amazing. The chicken tikka masala was really good, although maybe a little too buttery for my taste and the naan bread and paratha were excellent! The decor and lighting and background music were really pleasant, but I did sense a slight sense of pretentiousness, but that could have been the cheap-looking vinyl tablecloths spoiling what was otherwise a sharp-looking place. Desserts were also good, but the desert tray the server brought over looked a little tacky, however his descriptions of the desserts made up for that so we both got one and we weren't disappointed. During our hour-and-a-half there, we were asked if everything was OK many times by many different people, almost to the point of irritation - they almost seemed paranoid. Overall, a good experience. This is typically my favorite Indian place.TYPICALLY. But today was horrible. First we waited over 15 minutes just for simple greeting. From there we waited 45 minutes for our meal. In that time, our drinks weren't replenished. We witnessed our server leave the restaurant a couple of times. Overall the service was TRASH. Well theres no other choice for indian around here so at least it fills that void. Lamb Korma and buttered chicken are great. The Josh Rogan or whatever its called was ok. Chicken kabobs are just kabobs nothing indian about it. Coconut shrimp were decent. Service is not the best and the prices are way expensive. Ive been to some amazing indian restaurants that are half the price and double the food and atmosphere. also had the mango mouse, it was just ok, not enough mango flavor. tried the key lime cheesecake that was no good and the oreo pie was good. Tried ordering one thing they don't have it anymore and have not taken it off the menu so then tried to order lunch special and for some reason that day there was no special either. And no attempt to go above and beyond when disappointing the customers or hearing some things were not good. So yes will go back as its the only place unfortunately read more

I only come through Lafayette every few months, and I have been craving this place for weeks. Brought my daughter with me (she's 20), and she said this was one of her best places ever! To give you some reference about her standards, the other places on her list include a seafood place in Florida, an Italian place in Boston, and a pizza place in NYC. Masala is one of my favorite restaurants in Lafayette. Moving here from New Orleans two years ago, I was shocked at the limited choices for Indian food, and grateful to find Masala. The cocktails, naan, and dinner plates are all incredible. We always get several dishes to share around the table- so I've tried just about everything. This place used to be awesome a few years ago when I visited Lafayette regularly. Now, not so much . I had the paneer makhani, and it wasn't that great as it seemed to taste a bit like tomato basil soup, but garlic naan was fantastic! I also grabbed a masala chai to go, but it was terrible. It was so bad I had to ask him if it was just a regular tea since they dropped a tea bag in it. Apparently, they just infuse black pepper and other spices in the water and then throw in cream and the tea bag. They should not call this a "masala chai". I've been here twice during my first week of my recent move to Lafayette. My co-workers have said great things about this place! During my first visit, I had amazing amazing service. Dr. Gupta (the owner who I got pretty close during a meal by myself) was nothing but kind and friendly. The second time, service was a little slower than I would've liked... but I forgive that bc the food was great. So far I've gotten the Chicken Masala and the Butter Chicken. Both awesome!!! The absolute best Indian restaurant I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I've had Indian food in at least 5 other states, and have never had one top Masala in quality, taste, or service. Your entree is made to your spice specifications (Indian Hot x2 for me) and this is a treat, because not all restaurants will do this. You can really tell that they do not spare any costs when it comes to using the best ingredients here, so every bite is worth your buck. And finally, you can meet the owner almost anytime you dine in, as he can often be found at the restaurant speaking with guests to ensure that their expectations were met. And if you're not experienced in Indian cuisine, no worries. Your waiter or the owner himself are more than happy to make you feel comfortable and make sure you leave Masala satisfied with your order. Trust me, you can take this review to the bank! Masala is completely average Indian food. If you're craving Indian food in Lafayette, I don't know of another place that would fit the bill. My main problem with Masala comes from the fact that the place is stupidly expensive. Even all the vegetarian dishes are over $10.00 and if you plan on getting meat expect to spend at least $15.00 a meal and this doesn't include naan. For the best bang for your buck I highly recommend their buffet, despite the fact that it is a very small buffet. If you have any vegetarian or vegan friends, this is a great place to bring them. In the end Masala isn't bad, just overpriced. If it was a bit cheaper I would have given it four stars. read more

Nothing like it in town! What Masala gets right that many Indian restaurants don't is quality spice blends and good yogurt marinades for their meats. This is a good way to introduce yourself to this style of cuisine if your never had it before. The servers are patient and always lead you in the right direction too. Another little secret about Masala is they have a pastry chef that happens to make the best classical desserts in town and customizes new fresh desserts in-house every week for them! The restaurant might be a little bit upscaled and Americanized compared to other Indian places, but it's definitely for the best! read more
