Visit Lafayette for work once per month. Each time I go I eat at this place. Ususally get the same thing saag paneer and naan bread. I really enjoy my dining experience. I always look forward to it. When I walk into Masala, my senses come ALIVE! First, the scent of incense is enchanting and makes me want to stay here all day, eating and drinking and relaxing in the beautiful atmosphere of Masala. The space is beautifully decorated and inviting. It feels clean and attentively cared for. The owner is present every day and makes sure everyone completely enjoys their experience at Masala. That is why it is so successful! I have been eating at Masala Indian Kitchen for years! I also have traveled a lot and have eaten at Indian restaurants all over! So now, I can honestly say, that Masala tops them all! Yes, in Lafayette, LA, again, we have the best food - even Indian food! The lunch special is a DEAL!! A GREAT DEAL! You get a cup of lentil soup (YUM!!), a small salad (which honestly I would prefer it to be dark greens instead of iceberg lettuce), vegetable pakora, vegetable of the day, lentil chips, rice, naan, and your entree choice of the day - which can be meat, vegetarian, or vegan. Don't you love that? Dinner is always lovely! I love the chana masala always and also the vegetable manchurian but also everything else, like the vegetable biryani, the chili paneer, the paneer makhani, the lentil soup, the vegetable pakoras, the samosas, the garlic and the onion naan, the MANGO LASSI (YUM!!!), and ALL of the desserts - but my favorite dessert is KHEER! The decor and strong smell of incense leaves something to be desired but if your looking for quality Indian food, Masala is the place. One hint, stay away from the buffet and order off the menu. The buffet can be bland and spice-less but the menu items have never failed for a spicy lunch. The service is above average and the menu is complete with specialty items. The food was really good and you can specify whether you want items mild, medium or hot, which was nice. The decor was decent as well. First let me tell you I am an Indian....have visited at some Indian hub cities like NY, Bay area, Chicago and Houston....also smaller ones likes NOLA, Birmingham,St Louis etc..... BY FAR THIS HAS BEEN THE Worst place I Have had Indian food.....forget the service, which sort of sucks....the first thing you notice is no Indian servers...so most of them don't understand the Indian dialect about food.....the service is 1 star.....but the cooking was pathetic....The food was really undercooked, very very small quantities, a very old (7 yrs old) menu and they still use that...pakora was raw, rice was raw, in fact they give you ONLY one piece of pakora for lunch!!!!!!!!!! read more

I like this place, and the food is delicious. The only problem I have with this place is the price. About twenty dollars per entree, and we always order the naan as well. So after a drink or two, one appetizer and entrees your looking at a pricy bill. 15 dollars is what I would be willing to pay for entrees here, unfortunately though this is the only indian restaurant in Lafayette, so they can charge what they want. We usually get the Hara Paneer Tikka and/or the Chicken 65 which are both outstanding but overpriced. I love the Chicken Korma here. But I will say that multiple times I have been there the owner has asked us how the food was- so the service is from an owner who cares, which is nice to see. But in these hard times, we consider food from this place a real treat because of the price. read more

We had lunch at this restaurant in Lafayette recently while visiting the city for the first time. Had no idea what to expect but took our chances. The restaurant is located in a popular commercial neighborhood. Cozy ambiance, fantastic food and great staff. We ordered Chana masala, butter chicken, paneer makhani, sheesh kebab sizzlers with naans. The server made sure to ask us about the spice levels. The food was flavorful and just the right spices. Portion size was good for our family of four. The dessert menu featured chocolate truffle cake, creme brûlée, chocolate mouse cake, in addition to the regular Indian desserts like kheer. We enjoyed it all. The restaurant is kid friendly and has a party room for small events. Highly recommended restaurant if you are visiting. read more

Love the food and the ambiance. Is a delight to have an authentic Indian restaurant in the area....and one that serves great food consistently like Masala is simply terrific! I got the lamb masala and it was quite possibly one of the best things I have ever eaten! The food is wonderful, the atmosphere is great, and the price is what you would expect from a fancy sit down place. Went for dinner with a group of friends. Nice ambiance and good cocktails. Ordered the chicken curry with garlic naan, samosas and creme brulee for dessert. The naan is delicious my curry was good but could have used just a bit more spice. I recommend this restaurant for a date night or a small gathering of friends. Being a person of Indian origin, I am constantly disappointed at what gets passed on as Indian food in the US. Most Indian restaurants dilute the cuisine to such an extent that it becomes barely recognizable as a version of the original. To get a fix for authentic Indian food, I some times go to lesser known places in dingy parts of Houston. Although the food at these greasy spoons has been good, the ambiance and service has invariably been shabby. So, to find a place that serves good Indian food with first class ambiance and service is rare. To find such a place in Lafayette, La that may not have as many Indian restaurants than a much larger city like Houston may is even rarer. I was warmly greeted upon arrival and shown to my table. Since I was dining solo, I eschewed appetizers and just ordered the lamb korma as my entree. Dr Gupta, the owner, came and greeted each of the guests at their table. It is endearing to see the owner to pay personal attention to his guests. We had a nice little chat about how he got started in the restaurant business. When the food arrived Dr Gupta and I were still chatting. He recommended that I also get a naan with my order. This was a nice personal touch. The sauce of the lamb korma was excellent. The portion size was generous. The lamb could have been cooked in the sauce a little longer for it to imbibe a little more of the flavor, but I am really quibbling here. The accompanying basmati rice that comes standard with each entree was quite good, but had quite a few kernels that gone dry and hard. The naan on the other hand was superlative. It was soft, delicious, and nuanced. Indian food is a symphony of spices and ingredients. Less confident chefs either dilute the ingredients (to appeal to a western palate) such that one can hardly hear the music or overdo the spices (to appeal to the traditional palate) that it turns the dish into a cacophony. The spices at Masala were handled just right - which is appropriate as the restaurant takes its name from the Hindi word for spice. I ended my meal with rasmalai. It was refreshing, sweet, fragrant with kewra water, and the almond sliver added some nice crunchy contrast to the soft balls. Very well made. Overall, I had a very good experience. Having more often than not being crestfallen in my search for good Indian food, I can only admire the good fortune the good people of Lafayette have in having such a restaurant in their city. You, like me, probably see a restaurant listed as a combo between Indian and Spanish Tapas and think to yourself "yeah, I'll pass". That being said, if you are in Lafayette - Please don't pass up this one. While the combination of two very distinct ethnic cuisines at first seems odd, I can say without reservation that Masala pulls it off in spectacular fashion. We dined from both of the menus, yes separate menus for tapas and Indian, and each was a pleasure in its own right. I will keep this review short as I have a glass of Limoncello waiting for me, but I do want to give the highlights. First, our waiter Bryce, was outstanding from start to finish - a true professional in every way. Second, the food was amazing, the lettuce cups and naan from the Indian side were so flavorful but yet not too overwhelming spice-wise as you find in many Indian restaurants. The patatas and bruschetta from the tapas side were both well done and offered original takes on classic tapas. And finally prices, we were both completely satisfied yet not overly stuffed, and we walked out just over 40 bucks including a 9 dollar glass of wine. It might be a touch on the expensive side for Lafayette, but given the atmosphere, waitstaff and food I think it is a bargain. We will be back, often, as out of the 30 or so restaurants we have tried since moving to Lafayette this is the best of the bunch. I have not a single complaint, and that my friends is rare. Do yourself a favor, go visit Masala and sit in Bryce's section if possible. read more
