While cruising along Federal Highway, I decided to pull into Hillsboro Square and get some sushi to-go from Masamune Japanese restaurant. It was my first time here, so I didn't know what to expect. As I entered, I noticed it was a small, serene restaurant with adequate seating and a sushi bar. I approached an employee and placed a takeout order for a California roll. As I waited, I looked at their menu to see what they offered. There were many traditional Japanese dishes, fresh sushi & sashimi, signature rolls, bento boxes, udon & soba, Ramen, and appetizers all at a reasonable price. I lack dining experience with Japanese cuisine, so many of the menu items were unfamiliar. What I do know is the California roll was freshly made and delicious. This roll had an even amount of imitation crab, creamy avocado, and crisp cucumber, all skillfully wrapped with sushi rice and nori. I will add this restaurant to my list of great spots to get good California rolls. read more

Cute little place tucked in a strip mall. Had a craving for sushi and Masamune was nearby and had great reviews. It was a Saturday night around 8 and it wasn't crowded at all, which was nice. I ordered a scallop sushi, Mexican roll and salmon basil roll. The scallop sushi was so fresh, and melted in your mouth. The party I was with ended up ordering one each for themselves as well! The mexican roll was simple and enhanced with a little wasabi and ginger. Perfectly bite sized pieces. The salmon basil roll was unlike anything I've ever had before. Pretty much tasted like a caprese in sushi form! Salmon was incredibly fresh, again super tender and melted in your mouth, no fishy taste. The party I was with also ordered three pieces of uni. Was $14.50 a piece, so pretty steep! However the uni was incredibly tender, very similar to butter, however the tail end did have a slightly fishy taste, but it is sea urchin so that's not uncommon. Someone ordered the tempura udon, they said the broth was a little bland, the udon were cooked perfectly, but of course the tempura gets soggy as it's sitting on top of the udon. They also ordered the fried JB roll, the hot mama roll, and an eel and salmon hand roll. While I can't comment on those things, everybody was incredibly satisfied with their meal and everything was reasonably priced. I didn't pay for this meal, so unfortunately I can't comment on the bill, but I can say this is not a cheap sushi restaurant. The prices are a little higher than average, but you're also getting what you pay for. The quality is spot-on and is exactly what you hope for when you have a sushi craving. The service was fast and they made great recommendations. Their sushi roll selection is not huge by any means, but their menu has a lot of diverse options on it. The only thing that I can't stand, but is of course very common with Sushi and Asian restaurants, is having canned soft drinks. This is a personal preference and didn't impact my rating at all. We have been coming to Masamune for years and love the authenticity of the food. We always recommend it as the best sushi/Japanese restaurant. They have such a wide variety of menu items, including plenty of non-sushi entrées. I went with a few friends this time, so we ended up splitting everything. We started with the edamame and chicken karaage. The edamame was exactly what you'd expect, simple but good. The chicken karaage was nice and juicy, but it wasn't my favorite compared to everything else we had. Next, we ordered the yellowtail with jalapeño salsa, which was absolutely delicious and incredibly fresh. We also had the Chilean sea bass with miso, w o w. The sauce was fantastic, and the fish practically melted in your mouth. We wanted something with broth, and since we all love kimchi, we ordered the kimchi pork hot pot. The broth was rich and flavorful, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. To finish, we ordered a variety of sushi pieces so everyone could mix and match. We tried o-toro, yuzu tai, snow crab, madai, and several others. Both of my friends were blown away by the food and said it exceeded their expectations. Had a good first experience, tried a nice array dishes from edamame, seared salmon sushi, crispy and light shrimp tempura, tuna sample plate with four different grades of tuna gradually getting better in cut which was amazing, two sushi rolls, the hot mama and us-1 dynamite. My only negative which is more of a preference really is I prefer thinner cut rolls. They are cut into 8 which I think makes them on the thicker end but I'm sure if I ask for them to be cut thinner they could accommodate? I would come back to try some more items. Been waiting to try this restaurant out again... I used to go a long long time ago when I was a kid and obviously restaurants change ownership, management and vendors so I was exited to try it out as an adult. It's in a small stand alone Japanese style building in the south east corner of Publix plaza on Hillsboro & federal. Basically on the east side of the street across from the goodwill. I walked in a few minutes after 5:30 (note they are not open for lunch and business begins at 5:30. I sat at the sushi bar and was greet by a female server. I let her know it was my first time here. She asked what I wanted to drink and then brought over the menu. A more mature couples sat at the sushi bar next to me. They had a different server whom they ordered drinks with and then directly with the sushi chef. While, I continued to wait for the waitress. After 15 mins I asked him if he could be my server instead. I ordered the Natto Ikura Rice as an appetizer and sashimi regular to test out the quality of fish. The appetizer was okay. Different but nothing wow. The sushi rice lacked flavor. It was bland and had no vinegar or sweet flavor like sushi rice does. The sashimi was great quality fish. I asked the sushi chef what types of fish were on it since the waiter did not come over to ask me if I needed anything or educate me on what I was eating since when I ordered I asked what type of fish is on it and he replied chefs choice. My meal had salmon, tuna, octopus, conch, fluke, black grouper, Bronzino, cobia and yellowtail. The black grouper was delicious and fluke is always a nice light mild texture fish. The service was terrible; disinterested once they saw I was ordering water and a solo diner. Food quality great. Experience was so so. This is our new go-to sushi place after our first visit last year. Easy to find, plenty of parking, and never overly crowded. We ordered: 1) Branzini carpaccio with truffle oil/ponzu- topped with minimal scallions, seaweed, alfalfa sprouts, clear noodles that all goes together each bite 2) Sushi deluxe- 11 pieces of nigiri with either tuna or salmon roll; can't go wrong with it and the nice presentation. 3) Uni angel hair pasta- typically $$ anywhere you go; topped with one piece of uni (it would be fair with another piece at least for the price), ikura, dried shredded seaweed, and wasabi that needed to be mixed all together. This pasta dish is a very unique taste but if you like uni, then you good. Friendly service, good quality fish, typical $$ price, but satisfied bellies. This spot was 10 stars! We visited on a Friday night around 9p. We were greeted by Tyler (sp) and he was super pleasant and helpful with the menu. We order miso soup, edamame, shrimp tempura, veggie tempura, avocado roll and a chicken and noodle dish that Tyler recommended. Everything was top notch!!! The tempura batter was so light and crispy and the dipping sauce was perfect! The non traditional veggies in the tempura was a pleasant surprise. It's been some time since the whole family's banded together for dinner. My sister, being the one with exotic taste, suggested that we'd all meet up at Masamune Japanese restaurant! Going inside, the restaurant was full, but the wait was only 10-15 minutes. For dinner we ordered 1x us-1 dynamite roll (tempura shrimp, avocado, crunchy with dynamite torched on top), 1x beef hotpot, 4x bluefin tuna rolls, 4x fatty wahoo rolls, 1x order fried chicken, 1x jalpaneo Hamachi, 1x plate of pickled veggies, 1x tuna tower; 1x agedashi tofu, 1x fried needle fish, 1x ginger salad; and 1x banana tempura ice cream sundae. Going into my review, this was a tough one as someone aspects of tonight's meal were superb, and other kinda fell flat. On the plus side; the beef hot pot possessed a savory and tangy kimichi based broth with tender veggies, soft tofu, runny egg, and tender meat. The bluefin tuna rolls packed nice flavor as these were fatty and savory; wahoo was fresh too. Favorite fish of the night was the Hamachi. The hamachi itself was very creamy and came with a subtly sweet and spicy jalapeño soy sauce! The agedashi tofu was excellent; savory soy sauce with crispy yet super soft tofu; what a treat! The tempura banana ice cream (hard to mess up) came with nicely battered bananas and creamy ice cream. On the con side; the US-1 roll for whatever reason just felt pretty mid as there wasn't much contrast between the different flavors. The pickled veggies were interesting, but overall, they didn't pack much flavor except for the yellow daikon and wasabi infused cucumber I guess. The tuna tower was a big letdown as the fish surprisingly was too fatty and didn't taste so fresh either. The needle fish wasn't as fishy as you'd think and tasted like mini white fish chips; these were just ok. The fried chicken was kinda chewy, and the exterior coating was bland. Lastly, the ginger salad had fresh greens and veg, but felt a bit on dry side. Overall, there were many different dishes we ordered tonight, and surely plenty that we didn't. But based on our experience, the food felt above average which is why we'd probably give Masamune 3.5/5 stars. read more

Wife and I have been coming here since before time began. I left a 4 star review when we ate here in the recent past. Now however I feel like Masamune has been taken over by new owners, and everything about the food has changed, and NOT FOR THE BETTER! The carryout order I ate the other night was a disaster, including the ikura handroll (plenty of rice but virtually no ikura), spicy tuna hand roll that looked like it came out of a squirt bottle and tasted like raw veal, and eel sushi where the eel was served basically raw. This meal was more amateur and lower quality than you would expect to find at an I-95 service station sushi counter staffed by a couple of pimply high school kids. My heart is crying. read more

The omakase was more than perfect. I have been to 5 different omakases in South Florida, and this is by far the best! The ambiance and lighting were perfect, I sat at the bar in front of the chef preparing all the food, and it was incredible. Compared to other omakases, each dish /piece of sushi was so much bigger than the other omakases I have experienced. I honestly can't believe it took me so long to decide to take the 1 hour drive to this restaurant. But it's better late than never because the experience and food were absolutely worth it.
