Well, well, well.....if you are looking for hole in the wall, hidden gem, cozy and quaint, little sushi shop-you found one. I almost hate writing this review bc I, selfishly, don't want the secret to get out. Alas, O was so impressed that I felt compelled to support this small business and share the deliciousness that is Sumo. This tiny spot is located on Hillsboro Blvd in a strip mall that has Açaí Bowls, a vet, a framing shop, and just about everything else. Right in the middle of it all, is Sumo. You better Google it or you just may pass it by. We went for lunch and started with the Edamame and fried Gyoza. You won't find a pic of the fried gyoza bc it came out fresh, piping hot, crunchy, and like no other friend gyoza I've seen. It reminded me of a Cuban empanada on the outside with delicious pork on the inside. I have literally never had gyoza so good. We next ordered the. Volcano roll and California roll. I know, I know - not too imaginative. Both were fresh and delicious and there are zero complaints. The staff is amazing and welcoming and everything came out quickly. We had a great lunch and made it out within the hour. They have great lunch specials (see menu) and are extremely reasonable in price. I give this place 5 stars bc it doesn't pretend to be something it's not and yet it's so much more! read more

I ordered the JB roll, Tuna Lovers platter with a clear soup (not pictured) for pickup. The food was soooooooo delicious! They even put a little ice pack on the tuna to keep it cold which is a plus for me. The service was great. I was able to get in and get out quickly. The chef, servers, and cashier were super polite. This is our second time visiting this hidden gem. The sushi roll we order (angry bird) has shrimp tempura in it and you can tell it was freshly fried on the spot and the tool just melted in your mouth. The pad Thai was to die for the noddles were done aldente and anyone that cooks knows how important that is. Side of fried rice was simple but sooo tasty. Had the lychee butterfly pea tea very refreshing. The Tuna Roll special is a MUST! The service was also top notch. Definitely Sumo has an amazing chef in the back. I arrived and was seated promptly and asked what I wanted to drink I said Green Tea..which to me sounds like hot gree tea...had I said Iced green tea I would have been expecting what the waitress served me..ICED GREEN TEA. Ok, I have never had green tea iced and i thought I will try it. It was very good and for a hot florida day the iced green tea was perfect! I asked fopr the shashimi appetizer which is 9 pieces of shashimi. The waitress said (this is where the star comes off) do you want all salmon. YUCK! No, I dont want all salmon I want what it says "chefs choice". Thats what I got Chefs choice which was salmon, tuna and white tuna I believe. IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!!! I also ordered a volcano roll which is a california roll with kani crab, masago and mayo as a topping. Again a delicious choice and I ate every piece! While I like to order for myself and not have any assumptions about what type of fish everyone else orders (the salmon) I choose to go with what the chef prepares! I was a full happy customer! and I will return again! Its close to home and everything was delicious and fresh! Only thing i can suggest is let the customer order and dont assume any customer is the same in their sushi tastes. I would have died eating 9 pieces of salmon sashimi. I dont like salmon THAT much. Overall a pretty solid choice when you're looking for Japanese food nearby. I wouldn't go out of my way to take a trip for it or anything. Nothing I ate was so spectacular & distinct to this restaurant I'd crave it - it's your typical Japanese cuisine. Sauce for the gyozas was deeeelish. I have been looking at this place and browsing at their sushi rolls for a few months now. It's in a nondescript in Deerfield beach on Hillsboro Boulevard. Although the plaza is pretty sketchy, the sushi game definitely has my respect, you can definitely tell that this isn't one of the places that gives too much rice and too little fish/sushi roll elements. They give a very respectable amount of sushi and the spicy tuna roll and I immediately realized that this is definitely a place for me in the future when I'm in the area for some sushi. Keep in mind this isn't a sushi and Thai place but rather a Japanese spot so they won't have any Pad Thai or Thai wonton soups. If you want noodles I'd go with the Yakisoba which was very good. I literally came here once for lunch and then again for dinner(with the wife). Any 2 sushi rolls from here is a great post-workout meal if you lifted weights. If you did cardio only, go home and eat a dry salad, lol. read more

This is not your mother's sushi bar! The sushi chefs are from Mexico and the servers speak Spanish. There was reggae music playing in the background. Too cool! Plus the food was delicious. This is a tiny restaurant on the south side of the street not far from I95. There are some dedicated spots out front for parking. They have a number of lunch specials in addition to a large regular menu of your favorites plus some with a twist. I ordered from their specials and ordered the "maki 2" with one change from the eel roll. They said they'd substitute another half of a California roll. The lunch specials come with your choice of soup or salad. I chose the salad. It was a nice small bowl of mixed greens with a couple cucumber slices, some shredded carrots and a nice amount of ginger dressing. When the main part of my lunch special arrived. I went wow! The plate was huge. It was a full 10 piece California roll and a full 10 piece shrimp tempura roll. Everything was fresh and delicious. Both rolls were sprinkled with mixed sesame seeds on the top. My husband ordered off the regular menu. He started with a harusami salad. We used to get a version of this at a restaurant years ago that we really liked. We haven't seen a similar version. He was pleasantly surprised to find that this was a fairly close facsimile. It's flash fried crispy noodles (I'm not sure the real name) that are airy. They "blow up" when thrown into the cooking oil, but when you eat them they are dry and crunchy. Mixed in with the "noodles" are bits of lettuce/salad and a touch of hot sauce/sriracha. It's very good. For his "main", he had their Florida roll. This was yellowtail snapper with avocado and cucumbers and a liberal topping of masago (fish eggs) on the outside. The service was pleasant, the food was very good, the prices fairly reasonable for sushi, and the reggae enjoyable... who could ask for anything more? read more

Right after I got my tattoo, my tattoo artist recommended a few doors down sumo. First off happy hour sushi rolls is pretty dope so I decided to try it out. Upon arrival, place is very small and cute. I was greeted by my server due to small space I preferred to sit at bar. I informed her to let her know it's my 1st time. I sat down for a good 5min waiting for a menu until I asked sushi chef for a menu he pointed to this flimsy to go paper menu which is actually restaurant menu. So I asked my server for happy hour menu, she begin to say there is not a happy hour menu and her fellow co worker another server who was on her phone cut her off saying it's online. So as I'm looking online I do not care if you want to talk about me but to do it in front of my face is a big no no!!! Asian restaurant Hispanic workers I only speak English and for some odd reason it does not matter yuh nationality I can still hear you talking to the sushi chef saying happy hour 3x if my stomach wasn't growling I would have up and leave. She was so close to me if I were to stretch my arm my forearm would touch her. Sushi chef did not engage much but he kept saying Sí Happy Hour. When I finally ordered, she took away all the flimsy paper to go menu. Of course my sushi was delicious and my wine (Riesling) was fresh and smooth. Except for 1 thing both spider roll and Mexican roll looks identical I thought a mistake was made. I'm so used to an announcement of which sushi is which. These two female co workers are speaking in Spanish on their phones and looking at me. I get it I'm the only one in the restaurant but do that in the back. Nope as bold as they are so I got uncomfortable hurried up and finished my sushi rolls and asked my server. Before I can even asked she said that right there is spider roll and I jokingly said oh they look the same. She literally walked away and went right back to texting and looking at me while the other co worker replenish spicy mayo in the cups. I was actually going to order 2 more rolls but they just give me my receipt and another family sat in restaurant that's when phones were put away. I took my spider roll to go although the crab wasn't really tempura properly. Crispy roll & Mexican roll was excellent. I tipped minimum % of $4 but because I had such an excellent day and as a former server we all have bad days but to boldly show lack of customer service and professionalism that tipped was not deserved. PS I only came here not only because it was recommended and that I was told the employees are nice but the reviews give this sushi joint 4.1 stars and everything looks delicious. Part of me regret not walking out I could have avoided this awful experience and went to Tobu, I only stayed because I was literally hungry. So 5 stars to sushi and 2 stars to employees. read more

We were excited to try this place in our own neighborhood as the reviews looked great. Upon entering it looked very clean and we always love to sit at the sushi bar. They handed us paper take out menus as we sat down at the bar. It took them probably 10 minutes to come over to get a drink order. The waitress was super nice. There were only two girls working and I know they were busy. We ordered sashimi, sushi and two rolls in addition to the tuna stack. The tuna stack came out and the chips were placed on the plate as if they tossed in the end of the bag. Small pieces. As we tried to eat it we realized it was all stringy. You can see in the picture the strings from the fish. It was also quite fishy tasting. If you've ever had quality sushi, it never tastes fishy. The sashimi and sushi came out next. The tuna was a very dark maroon. It's usually a very bright red color, and tasted a bit off, as well as being room temperature, not cold. My husband and I were reluctant to continue eating anything because we were afraid of getting ill. The rolls we had were sub par. I'm super disappointed and feel like they need to step it up. Considering the prices were just as expensive as Saiko-o, we will most definitely be going there as the quality meets the prices. We still spent over 100$.
