So I was picking up food from this plaza when I noticed they were advertising chocolate covered strawberries. I was craving some so I decided to give them a call and see if they had some ready to go or if it was pre order only. They told me they had a couple left so I decided to go inside and pick them up. Paid $25 for 13 of them and walked out. I get in the car and open the box only to find the chocolate literally crumbling off the strawberries and liquid oozing out. The worst part is when I took a bite, the strawberries tasted weeks old! They were awful and I had to trash them instantly as these were not edible. I am upset that this business tried selling me their week old products that are meant to be trashed and not sold. Selling old products is completely disrespected towards your paying customers. What if those were meant for guests?? How embarrassed I would've been. As a business, you shouldn't be selling things meant to be trashed for a quick buck. That's all I have to say. read more

Came looking for Custard Napoleons. There were two trays. I asked the woman behind the counter - are these Creme filled or Custard filled? "Yes" - yes what? I asked her again. Same answer. I said slowly - are these filled with Whipped Creme OR are they filled with Custard? I pointed to the open tray that looked like they were custard. Oh yes, custard. When it was my turn the lady tells me if I can come back another day or order over the phone because she is busy, there was only one person behind me. The ladies were as nice as could be very close to closing time and even gave me a sampling of their homemade chocolates while I perused their offerings. I'm all in favor of supporting small businesses struggling to keep afloat next to the giants of Paradise and Porto's. But Masis needs an attitude change before I go in anytime soon. I did not appreciate the glares and sighs of impatience as I paced to and fro along the display counter, wondering what I should get. There was no one else in the store so why so much disdain? I settled for a chocolate Vozni (who can say no to a big round choclate mound?) and a red velvet rectangle cake. The Vozni was fine (and for only $1 I'd be willing to give someone else a dollar to get a few for me) but the red velvet was old..hard, crumbly, crummy (in a bad way) and just OLD. It was only 2pm in the afternoon. I saw a bag of those long sandwich breads. "How much?" "1 dollar." "OK! I'll get it!" "I mean $1.25." "What?" "Sorry, $1.50." She's gotta be kidding me!! I'm kinda wavering on 2.5 stars, so I'll bump it up to 3 on account of not having tried the Voznis yet (forgive me - I didn't know I was supposed to - 100% disclosure, I don't even know what a Vozni is). What I have eaten are the tarts, cookies, little cakes - and the macarons. Because in truth, the only reason I go into a bakery is to see if they have macarons. Masis Bakery does ;) Even when a macaron is bad, it's still pretty good. My only complaints here are: 1. everything is kept so cold in that display case that freshness is unknownable. And 2. too much sugar. I think there's a fine line to walk here - and personal taste is a factor - but regarding the macarons, these badboys are just too sweet for me. How is it that I've never reviewed Masis Bakery before when I've been a customer for over 14 years? It's a cute little Armenian bakery I like going to when I need to get desserts for a party or when company's coming over, and I don't want to deal with the hassle of places like Paradise Bakery or Porto's. For such a small place, they have a pretty wide selection of individual-size desserts as well as whole cakes (they do custom orders as well, of course), breads, cookies, and some other Armenian baked goods like gata and lamajoon (sorry if the spelling's incorrect). I've gotten things like creme brulee, fruit tarts, cakes (carrot, chocolate, napolitan, etc.), as well as Armenian desserts like Vonzi and my favorite ponchik either filled with egg custard or nutella. The reason I'm knocking this place down so much is because a few weeks after the winter holidays, I decided to treat myself to a few desserts for the week including a creme brulee and a cupcake. Up until then, everything I had ordered had tasted fresh and delicious. But my cupcake and creme brulee were both OLD and HARD...like they had been sitting there for a long, long time, which they probably had been. That majorly turned me off, and I haven't been back since then. I realize that not everything sells, but bakeries have GOT to dump out their unsold goods after a day or two. Don't pass them off to your customers and hope to get away with it. Think of all the business you lost with me as well as others for your cheapness. Plus, it's gross and unhealthy to sell old food. Blech! Another reason why I'm knocking down stars is because close to Christmas, there was a customer who had custom ordered a bunch of ponchik with nutella for a family gathering. The ladies there couldn't figure out what was going on. They were completely out of ponchik, there was no time to make any more, and it sounded like they accidentally sold them to someone else. They were unsympathetic to the customer and didn't even say they were sorry. Well, one of the ladies did mutter a "sorry" but it didn't sound sincere. If I were them, I would've offered her desserts on the house for fucking up her holiday order. Even though this didn't happen to me personally, I made a mental note not to rely on this place for custom orders. I like to support local businesses, and like I said, I've enjoyed their desserts and pastries for years. But if they want me to come back, they've got to step up their customer service skills and make sure they never again sell OLD pastries to anyone. read more

Their specialty cakes are great, especially the giant fruit tart! I went in there the other day and picked out a few little tarts and mousse treats for my co-workers. Just stopped today bought $20 worth of pastry's and 2 drinks. Asked if they were fresh the lady lied and said yes made today. Well as we are driving away me and my 2 toddlers started eating them. I first try the drink and right away taste it's bad okay no big deal it was a milk drink so I just take it as a lost. Once I get to the middle of one pastry I taste this nasty taste and smell look and their is MOLD! Inside the pastry! I scream at my kids to stop eating them and they had already finished theirs. I went right back and the 2 lady's were rude asked for a receipt and I told them I didn't get one they got rude walked away I asked for a full refund. She only wanted to refund me the 1 Pastry and drink that was bad. Asked me to bring in the rest of the Pastry's I told her my kids finished them and I don't know if their was MOLD on those as well so I told them I want a refund on everything. I have found it! The best eclairs that are perfectly sweet and consistent. Most eclairs are pricey and awkward. They are usually tough and as soon as you bite into them it oozes everywhere all over the sides and usually not into your mouth like it's supposed to. However the eclairs at MASIS Bakery are divine. They are slightly spongy with a rich chocolate top and a perfectly filled inside. I'd say it's almost like a doughnut except not the same dough... it's quite delicious and it's $1. The staff working here is very nice and helpful towards the customers. Masis has all the traditional Armenian pastries as well modern European such as macaroons, eclairs, and many kinds of baklava. If I could give them no stars I would. They have absolutely NO sense of customer service. I showed them a picture of a cake I wanted for my husband's 30th birthday. I am normally not picky but for a special bday I wanted it to be perfect. After showing the pic the quoted me $155 for the cake which I thought was reasonable. When I went in to pick up the cake the day of the event it looked nothing like the picture I gave them. After telling them this wasn't what I wanted the "manager" Larisa came to tell me I was being rude and blah blah blah. I asked for the owner but they were conveniently out of the country. I understand it's difficult to forecast bakery sales, but it's unacceptable to sell items that are as stale as some of the things I've tasted from this bakery. A friend bought and brought a box of mixed pastries, and some of the cakes were so old, dry, and stale that they actually physically felt hard (the red velvet and coconut cake especially). Unacceptable. However, I wish I had tasted them fresh because once you get past the staleness, you realize it's actually a really great piece of pastry. So maybe just ask for their freshest one when you're ordering? read more

A little cake with a pudding and a powder layer, and it seems there's a slight hint of a delicious liquor. Yum. The merengues? DELICIOUS! With a butter-cream center!!!! it rocked! And bigger than expected. The julebeh/jaangiri was also a nice, unexpected surprise. (I ate a lot of it in India) and this version had a rose-water and honey syrup. I also like that it was crispier than what I've had most times...even though they have syrup on the inside. giggle. I like how much attention to detail they have for EVERYTHING. Even the baskets. I will start off by saying Our wedding cake was delicious, even 3 months later (as we decided to eat the top layer in thirds on the anniversary of our wedding for the first 3 months) We went here in hopes of not spending a fortune on wedding cake that nobody likes to eat anyway and we were in for a treat, LITERALLY! The price was phenomenal! I believe we paid $2 a slice for the vanilla cake with custard filling. I later called and asked them to add peaches in the filling and they didn't charge extra. The one thing I didn't appreciate however was a few days after I placed my order I got a call from a male (I'm assuming the owner) telling me that they would have to charge for delivery however when I placed my order they told me no delivery fee would be charged. Once I argued and said i wouldn't pay delivery and was willing to cancel my order the man quickly said it would be no problem and they wouldn't charge me delivery. I felt like I was being swindled but luckily I held my ground and they were good about honoring their original quote. This place also has amazing chocolates! They are pricey but they taste delicious! If I'm ever in the area i would definitely pick up dessert from masis! read more
