We chose Madewell because they were reasonably priced and didn't try to BS us like the other two. Not sure why some contractors think eveyone is ignorant just because they dont want to be bothered with doing the job themselves. We did our homework. This was a 3 stage process. Stage one...spay and kill off the the old grass and weeds. Stage 2...the next week they removed all the old dead grass and weeds. Stage 3...laying of the new sod, which actually happened over a month later because of COVID-19 and waiting for good healthy sod. They also adjusted all the sprinklers if needed to make sure there was adequate coverage. The sod was delivered from the sod company and looked beautiful and healthy. We watered for 30 min, 2x a day for a month. Our lawn is absolutely beautiful and healthy and by week 3 had already taken to the soul. We get compliments all the time. My neighbors are probably just happy not be looking at a dirt yard any longer. Things that I found issue with along the way: clean-up wasn't as good as I would have liked, but I am very particular; and communication was not the best. Despite that, I couldn't be happier with the end result.

Boy was I wrong so I ask for two guys, for two hours and I pay for a dump fee mind you I paid three days before they ever showed up too. So they get here 3 guys I only paid for two but one was the owner so didn't think much of it but guess what they brought just a mower and blower and a trimmer, this is a large Bougainvillea I wanted remove among a few other things Removed. No chainsaw and no dump truck just a pick up truck with mower and blower and trimmer in back how are you going to fit that bush in that truck, mind you I had a conversation with him via text the owner and I sent pictures because he said he wanted to ensure he gets the right equipment order. so I told myself let's just see if what happens so I go to the back yard with them after shaking the owners hand, I went back showed him the bush I said I wanted it gone even if the two hours was just spent doing that, three guys should be easy. i went and got them water at the store per there request too, and I come back and they are mowing my back yard and one guys starts trimming. I already told them I didn't need a mow I wanted the bush removed. So they say yes. Ten mins later I don't hear them out there instead they are out front sitting on the back on their truck. So Im hoping at some point things get better well about an hour and 15 mins later I finally go Out and talk to the owner and I tell him look I'm not happy you are suppose to be getting rid of the Bougainvillea for me not the mowing and at this point the other guy was blowing what I dont know in my back yard, the owner proceeds to tell me o i was going to ask how Much do you want me to cut of the Bougainvillea I said excuse me I wanted and paid to have it removed he then says sorry miss communication and I said what I not o to have in text messages my top priority was the Bougainvillea bush then I said I also told you when you got here I want it gone, well he then looks at his guys ask them how far away from the shop they were which I know about ten mins away as per there address. i tell him you need a chainsaw he says yes I do and says sorry for miss communication and tells me he will talk to his boss and have him call me, wait what! Aren't you the boss so I said ok have him calll me. So I walk into my house, one hops in truck and leaves I'm think cool maybe they getting a chainsaw meanwhile the other two go to my back yard to another bush not my Bougainvillea and I'm like WTF so I wait thinking the guys coming back with chainsaw no another 20 mins past and what would you know my two hours are up so what happens the guy pulls up then guys grab no lie 3 bags of clippings and a couple of branches and just take off in truck no call yet from owner nothing. I see them take off in truck and I have pictures of them leavinf with basically nothing in the back of the truck because they also had a mower blower and trimmer back there and the truck was barely over the top. I call the owner aka the guy who was here. He proceeds to tell me the guys said they took a whole pile of debris they mowed and trimmed and got poke by thorns from my bush and I was like my quote which i still have the paperwork says Bougainvillea removal and what customer instructs for two hours. plus all the pictures I showed him before hand all the communication I had was very very clear. I have all those saved too. So I ask for a refund he says no says I have to pay for his guys I said they didn't do anything I paid you to do he proceeds to tell me I have to pay for the lawn service( the mowing blowing I said you meaning everything I asked you not to do but did anyway so you can do this say I need to pay you for something I never asked you to do. Then it was o they needed to mow before they removed the bush and I was like no I got someone two days before to mow so it would be a problem and you guys could focus on the Bougainvillea, which have proof of to that I mowed. So I said I would give them $50 and he can refund the rest he tells me no again and says I have to pay for the lawn service which was $135 plus $50 for the pokes and pricks from the bush. What! You should have known what it takes to do the bush, you quoted me for a removal of a Bougainvillea it's in our paperwork!! Anyways so we go back and fourth for 9 mins per phone log which I have kept for proof too that and all pictures texts contracts and quotes on exactly I hired him to do. He proceed to tell me do a charge back take me to court I have insurance and hangs up so now he has my money and barely work done.

However, pricing the materials used at Home Depot or Lowes shows me a good idea of how much fluff is added to the invoice. Labor should be $40 an hour MAX. This is unskilled labor, not rocket science. You don't need a degree to install sprinkler systems. And if you come out to do the work, complete the job. I'll never use them again. Never. This sort of stuff is what gives this industry a bad name.
