Four of my friends and I stopped at "A Slice of Pie" for lunch on our way to Kimmswick for the…read moreChristmas Cookie Walk. I had eaten there with my daughter, about ten years ago, which is WAY too long. I used to buy their 'Take and Bake' Pies at Harter House, but my local store no longer carries them. They've always been good. Why did it take me so long to come back? I'm usually traveling with my husband and he prefers BBQ or a burger when we're traveling. I'm glad I mentioned it Saturday, when we were looking for a place to eat lunch! We all loved it so much that we ate there again the next day, on our way home. Between us, we tried both kinds of Chicken Pot Pie (Traditional and Mushroom), the Chicken Salad on Croissant, the Tomato Soup, and the Bacon Quiche. Each entree was served with two hot rolls. I didn't have room for the rolls, but those who did said they were good. Dessert? You may have to take it with you, but they're packaged well. The quiche reheats well in the microwave. Those who tried it said it was the best quiche ever, and ordered it again the second day, so I took a piece home to try. I haven't tried my Cherry Raspberry yet, but the others said the Coconut Cream (whipped cream) and Custard were wonderful. I did try one of his cinnamon/sugar pie crust cookies. They tasted just like my mama used to make. He said he's planning to sell those at the Harter House Stores in the Springfield area, so I'll be looking for them. He's also bringing a truck to Harter House in Springfield on Eastgate, occasionally, so I'll be watching their Facebook Page so I can buy a piece of pie without going to Rolla. Good pie crust makes a pie, and luckily, you can find them in the freezer case at Harter House and Price Cutter Stores. Look for "Mickey's Pie Crust", ready to put in the oven and bake.

Unfortunately, I was not impressed. While the service was friendly, our lunch appeared microwaved…read more I expected the pie to be amazing- especially at $10 a slice. We ordered a few pies, but the flavor was mediocre at best. The dining area is nice and spacious.

I see people coming off the interstate sitting in the parking lot only to finally leave. We have to go up the road to the Waffle House instead. I've told the waitress and the manager and nothing has changed. Their food is good though.

Cute light fixtures over the tables, and all of the diffusers in the ceiling were spotless. The bathroom did look a little bit shabby and dated compared to the dining room, and bad tile and grout work made weird puddles instead of letting mop water drain properly. But everything in there was clean (and smelled good), so no shame on the staff. Host and server were super friendly. Our server checked in just the right amount. I got the super bird and my son got pancakes with butter (he's not into syrup). I hadn't had a super bird since college. It was pretty good. Crispy grilled bread, turkey, tomato, cheese, whatever else. The tomato slices looked like they came from a good fruit, not mushy. In the fruit bowl (99¢ upcharge from the fries), the bananas were perfectly ripe, and so were the grapes. The cantaloupe and strawberries were a little underripe, but I just sprinkled them with a packet of Splenda and let them sit while I ate my sandwich and it worked out great. It's Denny's. Like $18 for our meal, plus tip. I'd come back. You know what you're getting here.
