What a pleasant surprise! Great food, generous portions and attentive fast service tucked into an unassuming brick building next to a transmission shop. My Route 35 roll was bursting with large chunks of tuna, salmon and yellowtail. Chicken satay sticks were juicy and flavorful. My son enjoyed his Vietnamese steak. Crispy whole sea bass in Thai Basil sauce was the star of the show. Perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The waitress and likely owner took extra care to make sure I didn't miss the tastiest parts of the bass and didn't eat any bones. Great value and looking to coming back. read more

Unbelievably delicious food. The la sa tom with shrimp was perfect. The soft shell crab seaweed salad was good, but for the price it really could use more seaweed. The Green Dragon and Godzilla rolls were big, filling, and very fresh. The standouts were the fried dumplings and the filet mignon hibachi, possibly the best in the area and worth ordering again. This place has some the best sushi I have ever had period.. we always order take out here & the only reason I did not give it a 5 is because that reason. Before I get into that let me just say it again if you like sushi order from here so good the spicy roles are a must ... the amazing tuna roll is a killer ! Also quick note their sriracha Mayo is perfect! Good choice to order on side or drizzle as a topping on anything. Also the other stuff outside is good but a 4 & the ambiance is mediocre... anyway I promise you for the money you will not find better sushi perfect take out spot. We took a ride from Red Bank to Matata and while it wasn't what I expected inside, it was delicious. This place is pretty no frills. One great part about this place is it's BYOB! We ordered the pork gyoza appetizer which was pretty good. My girlfriend and I split the chicken hibachi dinner which came with vegetables, fried rice, soup & salad. The chicken and vegetables were great, the soup was decent and the salad had a bit too much dressing for my liking. They offer hibachi but not the typical hibachi experience where you sit around the grill, you just get it brought out to your table. Surprisingly this works better for my girlfriend who doesn't like seeing the raw meat like at a traditional hibachi. We also got sushi -- Tiger Roll, Spicy Tuna & Spicy Crab. All the sushi was very good, the Tiger roll was unique with a piece of filet mignon on top (I know it's not very authentic) but it was delicious. The service was good, our waitress was a bit dry but there was another waitress who was very funny and personable who helped us out as well. Overall the staff was very nice and efficient. Happen to come across Matata when my wife and I were looking for a restaurant opened past 8:30. I'm really glad we found it since the meal lived up to the 4 1/2 star rating. I ordered the beef rib app and Pork Singapore Chow Fun and my wife ordered shrimp Green Curry both which were excellent. The beef ribs were pretty good but don't think it was worth the cost. Overall the meal was excellent and the portions were also great. My wife's curry had 9 large shrimp and my Singapore Chow Fun was definitely enough for 2. I will definitely go back and can't wait to try other dishes. read more

We get delivery from here regularly. Generally we get Thai or sushi but occasionally Chinese too, everything is made with quality ingredients. This is our go to spot for sushi and certain Asian fusion dishes. The general tsos is actually chunks of real chicken, it's delicious! The spicy tiny is chunks of tuna as well, not just mashed up tuna like most places do. We order from here 2-3 times a month for either lunch or dinner. Delivery is always pretty quick. Based on the two prior reviews here in Yelp of Matata I thought I was going to be in for a real treat, but unfortunately that was not the case. It takes great skill and resources to pull off a pan asian restaurant - just think about it they have to serve foods of China, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan including sushi. The only place that even comes close to this feat is Nemo in Keyport, NJ and Matata is not on the same level as them. The Matata dishes are over sauced and their apps. were run of the mill. Nice clean place with decent food service but the dishes are simply lacking the magic that put Nemo on the map. The bottom line here is just OK - the're not bad but not really worth recommending for a destination trip. read more

Matata has become my family's favorite restaurant when we're craving Asian, which is quite often. Matata has Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese food. The menu is truly expansive. I usually get sushi, and it's consistently fresh and delicious. Last night I got the tiger roll and the crazy salmon roll, and both were awesome. The tiger roll has spicy tuna, avocado, and filet mignon on top. Typically places will charge an arm and a leg for a roll with filet mignon on it, but matata's prices are extremely reasonable. Their tom yum soup is also exceptional. We've dined at matata, picked up, and gotten delivery. They are always very prompt. We've introduced many people to matata, and everyone agrees that it's amazing. So happy that such a solid Asian fusion restaurant exists down the street from my parents' house. read more

We couldn't stop giving praises to the attentive wait staff for the delicious flavors of their food. The Vietnamese whole fish was a delight and a good value at $24. The best was the fried rice. I was brought up on NYC Chinatown food and this fried rice brought me back. A must. For $5 the appetizers are a great deal. Spicy dumplings excellent. Tom yum soup was perfectly spiced with quite a few large shrimp cooked perfectly. Many Asian foods represented including Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese and Thai. Deeply disappointed in Matata after tonight. I have been a customer for over 2 years and I find their food to be delicious every single time. However, my delivery is ALWAYS messed up. Almost every single delivery, a part of my order is missing with a soup missing or a sushi roll missing, or the order shows up severely late. Tonight is a new record, my family and I have waited over 2 hours for our food. I truly do love their food but I am disappointed in the quality of service.
