My experience was for take out only but I already cannot wait to return. I didn't realize how hungry I was after a long night at a work event nearby and a quick Yelp search brought me to sushi heaven. It might be good to note (because a few reviews don't seem to love it) but Sogo Sushi is all brown rice. That just so happens to be my preference! Whenever I remember to, I will happily pay the extra $1 for a brown rice roll, and I am not sure why, but Sogo Sushi is 100% brown rice rolls. I stopped in around 8PM once night, ordered a salmon avocado roll & a spicy tuna and about 5 minutes later, I'm walking out with my dinner. Flavor combinations were overall homogenous and pretty good, but the yellowtail roll in particular was on the smaller side. I'd recommend getting 3 rolls to truly feel full. The hibachi/stir-fry entries however, looked bigger and very balanced. We've been going to Sogo for years. It started as a date night spot and now we go with the whole family. There is something for everyone. The restaurant is a bit different, you walk in to the sushi counter, where the staff are preparing the food. It isn't the fanciest sushi counter, it's feels like you are walking into a kitchen, but the hostess will bring you to the other room, and it's a long room with dark tables and sleek booth. My personal favorite is the summer roll, which has shrimp tempora, avocado over the top and it is drizzled with a brown sauce, which has a nice kick to it. We always start with the gyoza, which have a great crunch to the bottom and a thin dumpling dough. The hybiscuos tea has a lovely flavor and is perfect on a warm day. My kids love the udon noodles with vegetables, and of course using "cheater chopsticks". COVID Review: we've ordered a few times since the region went into lockdown. You call in your order and they give you a pick up time. When you arrive, you park in the little parking lot behind the restaurant and call to tell them you are there. When your order is ready, you can collect it from a table located in the parking lot. This is a great -- NO CONTACT -- way to support a local place and get a yummy meal. read more

So I'm giving Sogo Sushi four stars even though I'll never come back here. Fact of the matter is that it just wasn't my cup of tea. All of the sushi is made using brown rice. Understand that I like brown rice - but apparently not in my sushi. It changes the entire texture of the sushi - whereas white rice more or less melts into the fish , brown rice is grainy and leaves you with something to chew. It is a completely different experience and one I can do without. I'll acknowledge that the quality of the fish here was really good. But mixed with brown rice it just wasn't worth it. I guess if you really like brown rice - or have some reason that you can't eat white rice - this place would be great for you. But for me, I'll never be back. I'm giving 4 stars because I don't think it would be fair to rate a place based upon my dislike of a particular food type. The place was good and it served its product well. Fresh fish, abundant possibilities - every single thing we ordered was excellent and beautifully prepared - seafood tacos, salmon pizza apps - yummy roll, summer roll, shiitaki roll, phoenix roll, lava roll- can't remember them all as we sampled about 7-8 different rolls - all melt in your mouth delicious. Personally, love the brown rice which I typically pay a surcharge for. And all very reasonably priced. Oh and the service - efficient and a place where they remember why keeping customers happy is a priority. I did, and I haven't been back to Yumi since. The food is uniformly excellent and inventive. The service is first rate and the ambiance is quiet and contemplative. It's almost Zen like, it's so tranquil. Sogo uses brown rice for their rolls and gluten free soy sauce is available if you ask. Sogo was AMAZING, and far exceeded my expectations. I was hesitant about brown rice sushi because it tends to have an odd texture and taste -- but not this kind. You can barely notice a different. Didn't have super high expectations for this place going in, it was kinda quiet and basic looking but it ended up impressing me. In the oft-trendy Red Bank, this won't be the first choice among hipsters and the like. Don't misunderstand: the sushi was good, the service was also. If you're expecting the fancy special rolls and a hip sushi bar to sit by, again not for you. You can get all of the standards and some extra options, sure. But for upscale, Teak is across the street. It was packed - Sogo was 2/3 empty. Part of what's missing is atmosphere. No romantic date nights here. As for the food, we did order the Uni and it was as good as it gets. The yellowtail, tuna and mackerel were AOK. No sweet shrimp available, though.
