We kept it simple-- the pepperoni pizza. Thin crust and a surprising pleasant spicy bite i did not recognize. Would certainly order it again. Cant say I didnt have high hopes after their video showed up in my FB account. And with that said, my high hopes were just that. The Pizza....well, where do i start. The dough was soft, no char on bottom, overly chewy for how thin it was. Even the rim crust of the pizza was doughy but the top seemed nicely done. Then i noticed that the pizza wasnt exactly what i ordered and the bartender said he could add more pepperoni, put it back in the oven and that i wasnt charged for extra topping. It wasnt extra it was no bacon, more pepp and he had said "ok." Not that hard. I know thisnis the style but when 3 of the slices had no pepperoni and the other had, lets say, scant....its disappointing I dont know if the oven wasnt hot enough or this is the way their pizza comes out this way, but i have too many options to make this a must-go-tp spot. read more

Overall the food is serviceable, if not a forgettable option in cvilles relatively over-saturated market of new American cuisine. IMO, you can find better more competitive options at the Ridley, American Tap Room, Burtons, etc. That said, the interior is cute the food is fine. Just nothing to write home about. The menu lacks inspiration, but if you're looking for a predictable "steak, chicken, salmon, burger, chicken sandwich and salads" menu, this does that. Their sliders are good and the straw on top is creative. Their pizzas are decent. Drinks are fine. I went here in a big group with my family. Everything we ordered had something oddly wrong with it, which was a huge bummer for the price. The cocktails all just tasted like sugar or Gatorade, the salads were a bit wilty, and the main dishes ranged from bland to bad. Absolutely nothing against the server though! Pizza here was excellent. The qSpecial and the Porky Fig was delicious. Only complaint was the wine. They have "Prisoner" Red Blend on their menu for $54. However, what they are actually selling is "Unshackled" Red Blend a lower level wine bottled by Prisoner. When we complained about the menu misrepresenting what they were offering they had no clue and were completely unwilling to adjust the price. They should simply adjust their menu to say "Unshackled" in lieu of "Prisoner", and put the price right - between $36-$42 a bottle. read more

I went to the restaurant at 4:45 pm on June 6. A few patrons there, 6 or so. We were promptly seated. After about 15-20 minutes a wait person came by. This was rather odd, as the same waitress passed by several times, then went back to checking her phone. We must not have looked hungry. I order the crab soup, and my wife ordered the chicken sandwich. The order came fairly fast. The soup - the only way I can describe it - take a small bowl of water, add 2 boxes of salt and some dirty dishwater, and that is what it looked and tasted like. It was so bad, it took my breathe away when I first sipped it. I asked the wait person not to charge me and they took it off the bill. The sandwich and fries - typical middle of the road meh you get at most mall eateries. I give this place about 8, maybe 10 months before it folds. And I think that is being generous. read more

My friend and I visited during burger week and they did not disappoint! It was a smash burger on a buttery brioche bun, crispy double angus patties, tangy pickles, creamy American cheese(they let me switch to Gouda at no extra charge!), and their signature smash sauce. Their indoor area has a huge tree inside for ambiance and a large bar which is nice too. It also came with a side salad, sweet potato (they were so good!) or regular fries. Fantastic and attentive service along with indoor and outdoor seating a plenty as we went during lunch on a week day. Came here with a friend for dinner. I've been to the Matchbox in Merrifield multiple times so I'm no stranger their restaurants. However, their locations are beginning to have a very chain-like and Cheesecake Factory feel to them. I was surprised to find that they took off the Crabs + Avo from their menu as it used to be my go-to order for the table. Now, their starters consist of the conventional sports bar sliders, wings, and dips. In addition, the atmosphere in this location was neither as cozy nor exciting as my experience at the Merrifield location. And the outdoor seating was not as nice or enjoyable. We shared the Apple Pear Salad and the Porky Fig Brick Oven Pizza. The salad was good and we enjoyed it. The portion was nice for the price, and I felt like it could be shared by four people. The honey balsamic vinaigrette complemented the apple/ pear well. However, I would have liked to see a few more pieces of apple/ pear because of the high ratio of mesclun and frisée greens to the fruit. The Porky Fig Pizza was average and underwhelming. The ingredients and flavors of the pizza tasted good, but it was cold when it arrived at our table and was definitely not worth the high price. I would not come here for pizza again considering that there are so many better fresh and local pizza options in the area. Overall, the food was decent, but the atmosphere was lacking. I didn't feel that the experience in the restaurant or the food that we tried was worth the high price considering all of the amazing local options in Charlottesville. read more

I've had food at the table quickly and so slowly I thought they'd forgotten about me. I'd encourage people to go if the weather is nice so you can sit outside and if you aren't in a hurry. My father came to visit me in Charlottesville and I wanted to take him to Matchbox for lunch as I had previously patronized the establishment for lunch with coworkers. And had a great time the first time I went. Unfortunately, I did NOT have the same experience today as I had weeks prior. When I went a few weeks ago, the vibes were great. It was much busier then than it was when I walked in today. Out of curiosity, prior to our arrival today, I called to ask if there would be a wait time. The lady that took my phone call said no. Being that my dad and I were already in Stonefield doing holiday shopping, we took a two minute walk from our car to the restaurant. The host seated a woman waiting in line in front of us. After he led her to her table, he said it'd be a couple of minutes before he could seat us. This was odd to me being that there were several empty tables in areas of the restaurant that that could easily accommodate two adults. The host walked towards the kitchen twice and came back to the front of the restaurant empty handed both times. Silverware and menus are at the front of the restaurant at the host's station--i'm not sure what exactly he was looking for, but anyone with good customer service skills would've prioritized seating customers in a restaurant that claimed there was no wait time for a table. After about 5 minutes or so, the host then led my dad and I to the table directly behind the woman that was waiting in line in front of us. I only mention this because the table he took us to was vacant (and clean) from the moment we walked through the door. As previously mentioned, the restaurant wasn't that crowded. I'm wondering why the host was reluctant to seat my father and I. It honestly felt discriminatory. At this point, I'm more observant of the actions of those around me because I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt that they were not being discriminatory and see how we'd be serviced at the table. Our server seemed friendly, but slow in pace when it came to waiting on us. She had more pep in her step when bringing food/drinks to the surrounding tables. My father and I both asked for water with lemon and proceeded to place our order. She brought the waters. She asked if we wanted straws, I said "yes, please". She said okay and walked away. It took her about 10 minutes to bring us 2 straws. In that ten minutes, our server did the following: * brought food to 2 of the surrounding tables * brought a round of cocktails to the table right next to us *verbally acknowledged/ and checked in with the customers at the tables she was serving (except the table my father and I sat at of course) * aimlessly walked around the back of the restaurant talking to the host and kitchen staff (the restaurant has an open floor plan, you can see most of the space) * checked her phone behind the bar--whatever it was must've been more important to her than doing her job, but not urgent/important enough to clock out and leave. Not once did it seem as if she forgot where the straws were located, nor did she have to locate and restock a new package of straws. When she finally dropped 2 straws on our table (which I found disrespectful, but I guess since she did it with a smile on her face, that made it socially acceptable to her) I requested that she cancel our order. I pointed out that I didn't appreciate that she decided to check her phone and service other tables and disregard the fact that she had another table to wait on, she took the straws back, as well as the waters and told me to have a good day. As someone who worked in hospitality and food service as a teen and in college (which was less than a decade ago), you can tell when an establishment has a team of employees that are overworked/overwhelmed due to understaffing. That was not the case based on my observation. She genuinely did not want to serve us and did a mediocre job of trying to hide it. We are not beneath you in any capacity and I was not going to tolerate that type of treatment. The experience I had this afternoon ruined mood. It made me cry twice out of frustration realizing that there are still people out there who judge and show bias towards others simply because of how someone looks or what they're wearing. It's unfortunate that I received better treatment from the staff when I had lunch with my all white colleagues, than I did when trying to dine out with my black father. If a Matchbox employee or manager reads this , take this review as a learning opportunity. It may be worthwhile for you all to consider doing some self assessments on your character. While you will never receive my business again, I want you to do better in the future. Treat others as you want them to treat you, no matter their color creed or appearance. read more

I was a little worried about stopping in here after seeing the reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised at how amazing the service was. We walked in just for some drinks and got a Rose Strawberry Margarita and a Lemon Drop drink. The Margarita had fresh muddled strawberries and was not sweet. The Lemon Drops my friend had was also tasty and strong. The only complain we really had was the size of the drinks, however, the great service made up for it. read more

It's edible, so two stars. We used to love the DC locations, but watched those decline in quality rapidly. Now, it is essentially a Chili's for pizza. The Charlottesville location is no different. Bland food, everything from the floor to the tables are sticky, and the service is average. The only saving grace is the beer, which admittedly is good. The food was OK, but underwhelming. The Calamari mayo sauce was awful; tartar sauce would be better. The two pizzas, a smoke & spice and Margherita, were in serious need of flavor. The crusts and toppings were super thin. Even the worst pizzas I've made at home, without a fancy oven, were leagues better. The crusts tasted like AP flour and baking soda (or powder), the cheap-quick alternative to a proper dough ferment with yeast. The service was very good. However, we're not going back because the food was so bland. The place (or chain) needs a real chef's reboot. The restaurant biz is competitive. Boring just doesn't cut it.
