I am usually skeptical of restaurants in resorts. But the Mill Room has impressed me. The food is excellent and service is great. For more casual dining, on the first evening, we ordered lobster rolls from the bar and sat at the patio for a nice relaxing view. On the second night, we enjoyed a nice formal dinner in the main dining room. The NY steak was cooked perfectly.

The food and ambience is good. Because there were 6 of us, we were seated at a high topped table which we found uncomfortable. Our waiter, Erik, was able to push our chairs closer to the table because we weren't able to do so ourselves. Erik was a fabulous waiter. Everyone liked what they ordered. The fried oysters were the big hit. Roasted vegetables as sides. We were also able to order hamburgers which came from the Bistro menu in the next room.

We do a yearly trip to Charlottesville, VA for the Foxfield races and found the Mill Room while looking for a dinner spot. I was so happy we found a place that was able to take us on a Saturday evening AND booking a day of reservation. The Mill Room is part of the Boar's Head Resort, which is a stunning hotel on a lot of land with gorgeous views. Honestly, I would love to stay here sometime in the future! The dining space reminded me a lot of a country club with gorgeous exposed wooden beams and a large fireplace at the center of the room. Super cozy! The dinner menu seems to be mostly focused around heartier comfort foods -- chicken pot pie, pork chops, and lamb. If this isn't your thing (me) they do have a few other options like salmon, tofu, and chicken to even out the menu. I started with the chef's soup which was mushroom. It was delicious! The base and consistency of the soup reminded me of potato soup, but the mushroom flavors were strong. I decided to go with a burger and fries for dinner. The fries were listed as truffle parm but I didn't taste any truffle (the parm was definitely present though). My burger was a little bit on the dry side, which was a tad disappointing. Everyone I was with seemed to enjoy their meal, though no one was blown away. Overall, a solid spot in a really pretty area!

    Good, but not great

This place really tries to be 4-5 stars, but just falls short, although it's not terrible and a 3 feels a little harsh. We were celebrating a milestone birthday or a girls trip and opted for one dinner in the resort restaurant. Pros: - beautiful views - helped me celebrate with a card, complementary dessert with a candle, and happy birthday confetti on table - server was super friendly - great mashed potatoes Cons - cocktails were all a miss (that's tough to do); they try to be fancy and mess up drinks with too much fresh basil, mint, or citrus - way overpriced for food quality - sauce a little cloying on steak - most food was fine, but wanted it to be great - little too much salt on truffle fries - bartender was slow as molasses

Shrimp &Grits -perfectly cooked jumbo shrimp and creamy grits. With au jus sauce. Full of flavor and great portion

We arrived and the staff were very friendly. We sat down and we served bread with a wonderful tasting blended butter made of paprika, Tyne, salt and garlic. We enjoyed a espresso martini and a Malbec wine while we waited for our dinner. For an appetizer we got Dates stuffed with goat cheese wrapped in bacon in a bed of basil chimichurri sauce topped with a jumbo shrimp - probably the best food I've tasted. The sweetness of the dates paired with the tart goat cheese and bacon made for a savory explosion of flavors. Huge compliments to the chef. This should be a standing menu item!!!!! Our main course was Shrimp &Grits -perfectly cooked jumbo shrimp and creamy grits. With au jus sauce. Full of flavor and great portion and a nice juicy NY strip (cooked to perfect with flavor and tenderness) with asparagus and mashed potatoesk

I have eaten here a few times over the years. The Mill Room is always excellent! The food, the ambiance, the service and did I mention the food! Beef tartare, wild mushroom, Brussel sprouts to start. Smoking Sazerac and botanical gin and tonic are a must. Trout and wild boar paired with a bottle of ridge finished with dessert! Heavenly! One of my wife and I's favorite spots in Charlottesville.

A tale of 2 breakfasts. We had a wonderful stay at the Bora Head Inn for 2 nights. Each day we had breakfast in the Mill Room. We opted for the breakfast buffet which was very good. First, both days the coffee was on point, their cups are huge and kept the coffee warm.....10/10 on the coffee. The first day: service was amazing! She was attentive, kind and informative. The food was all delicious except the eggs that seemed to be the eggs which are served at the hotels that offer free breakfasts. My youngest got the kids meal and his scrambled eggs were the real deal. The hash browns were also over cooked. But the French toast, light and cinnamon flavored, perfect biscuits and gravy, croissants that were crispy on the outside but soft and chewy on the inside. The second day, the service was not good. We didn't even see a server until we were seated for 20 minutes and I am not joking when I say we didn't see him again for an hour. Also, the eggs and hash browns were clearly fresh scrambled and fresh cooked but the biscuits and croissants were rock hard....and that is not an exaggeration. The French toast was also anything but light. Overall, would eat here again but not a must do.

Appetizers: standing ovation to the pork belly. Everyone at the table was blown away. The gnocchi bolognese and blue crab linguine were absolutely delicious also. Dinner: the pork ribeye blew me away with the flavor, char and tenderness. 10/10. The beef filet was really good and solid but if you are looking for something outside a traditional box, order something other than the beef tenderloin. Again, perfectly cooked but, in my opinion, it is included with to satisfy those who want and steak but it doesn't showcase the chef's passion....as a certified steak lover and defaulted even though I was leaning towards the pork or chicken....I got a great meal but nothing like the pork rib eye. Desserts: sticky toffee pudding OUTSTANDING. The sorbet was way too sweet. Now service and atmosphere: service was incredible, kind, engaging, and attentive. I wish I remembered his name but he is a local kid and really did an amazing job. Atmosphere: we sat on the porch and loved it. It gives you this relaxed homey vibe with food that really is Michelin quality. A not to be missed restaurant.

For dinner we had the mountain trout and honestly it was the best trout I've ever had, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The angus steak was also absolutely mouthwatering. By the time dessert came we were already full, but still couldn't resist the sticky toffee cake and the chocolate bread pudding, and I'm glad we didn't skip them because both were amazing. Everything was rich and satisfying without feeling overly heavy or leaving us bloated afterward, which I really appreciated. Our server was so sweet and attentive the entire night, and the interior of the restaurant is cozy, charming, and just really inviting. Definitely recommend and we'll absolutely be back every time we're in town.

Ordered a cucumber chamomile gin and tonic, which left something to be desired. We started with the blackberry salad which on the menu said it also included avocado but there was none on the salad-despite this the salad was great. Our mains were good but not great. The biggest issue I found here was despite our server being very nice while ordering she NEVER checked in on us after anything arrived, never refilled waters either. So although she was nice the service was not good as there were times we wanted to order something else and one of the entrees didn't arrive as it was ordered but our server never checked in. All things considered I think I would only come here to grab a salad or appetizer.
