Entree: COQ AU VIN $32 Whipped Potatoes, Nueske's Bacon, Pearl Onions, Red Wine *The flavors were good, but the chicken was quite dry, which took away from what otherwise could have been a very enjoyable dish. I looked up the best breakfast and the mill room did not disappoint. they offered a breakfast buffet with many pasties, muffin, croissants and fresh fruit to c from. there was. a waffle station with topping and a wonderful selection of other breakfasts dishes. The dishes are great, and they have the sense to have a small(ish) menu of things they can all do well. For more casual dining, on the first evening, we ordered lobster rolls from the bar and sat at the patio for a nice relaxing view. The food and ambience is good. Because there were 6 of us, we were seated at a high topped table which we found uncomfortable. Our waiter, Erik, was able to push our chairs closer to the table because we weren't able to do so ourselves. Erik was a fabulous waiter. Everyone liked what they ordered. We come here every year on the way to our charlotte home, we make a stop with the kids and dogs. It's definitely Christmas magical! The restaurant, the people, the decorations however I will say the biggest complaint I have is the darn coffee they serve is burnt tasting, year after year we wake up and head over for a nice breakfast before heading on the road just to have the same experience with the coffee it's NOT GOOD! We do a yearly trip to Charlottesville, VA for the Foxfield races and found the Mill Room while looking for a dinner spot. I was so happy we found a place that was able to take us on a Saturday evening AND booking a day of reservation. The Mill Room is part of the Boar's Head Resort, which is a stunning hotel on a lot of land with gorgeous views. Honestly, I would love to stay here sometime in the future! The dining space reminded me a lot of a country club with gorgeous exposed wooden beams and a large fireplace at the center of the room. Super cozy! The dinner menu seems to be mostly focused around heartier comfort foods -- chicken pot pie, pork chops, and lamb. If this isn't your thing (me) they do have a few other options like salmon, tofu, and chicken to even out the menu. I started with the chef's soup which was mushroom. It was delicious! The base and consistency of the soup reminded me of potato soup, but the mushroom flavors were strong. I decided to go with a burger and fries for dinner. The fries were listed as truffle parm but I didn't taste any truffle (the parm was definitely present though). My burger was a little bit on the dry side, which was a tad disappointing. We went to Mill Room at the Boar's Head as a family after our father passed away... I think because of the fall-school break restaurants were unusually busy. anyways, we got seated right away in a nicely redesigned space reminiscent of Aspen Colorado--exposed beams and other rustic-modern touches. cozy and elegant. the decor did not match the food or service, unfortunately. servers were obviously in the weeds and stretched thin, which I get is at least partly a function of coming back from COVID pandemic. I ordered the apple salad with salmon and smashed potatoes, the latter of which was good. but the salad, dressing and salmon literally had no flavor and no "zing" that the dish called for. please, for all that is good and pure, pre-season your fish before cooking and always add acid to salad dressing. the fresh-made bread was wonderful. but we had finished plates sitting on our table for about 20 minutes or so... needs improvement in food-running and some of the meal prep. read more

The atmosphere is cozy and relaxing and the bar staff rocks though the drinks are pricey. The kitchen on the other hand needs to step up to the plate. The "blistered" shishito peppers were raw and the other plates over salted. If you are going to dine in the area there are much better restaurants than the Old Mill room. read more

We enjoyed a espresso martini and a Malbec wine while we waited for our dinner. For an appetizer we got Dates stuffed with goat cheese wrapped in bacon in a bed of basil chimichurri sauce topped with a jumbo shrimp - probably the best food I've tasted. The sweetness of the dates paired with the tart goat cheese and bacon made for a savory explosion of flavors. Huge compliments to the chef. This should be a standing menu item!!!!! A tale of 2 breakfasts. We had a wonderful stay at the Bora Head Inn for 2 nights. Each day we had breakfast in the Mill Room. We opted for the breakfast buffet which was very good. First, both days the coffee was on point, their cups are huge and kept the coffee warm.....10/10 on the coffee. The first day: service was amazing! She was attentive, kind and informative. The food was all delicious except the eggs that seemed to be the eggs which are served at the hotels that offer free breakfasts. My youngest got the kids meal and his scrambled eggs were the real deal. The hash browns were also over cooked. But the French toast, light and cinnamon flavored, perfect biscuits and gravy, croissants that were crispy on the outside but soft and chewy on the inside. The second day, the service was not good. We didn't even see a server until we were seated for 20 minutes and I am not joking when I say we didn't see him again for an hour. Also, the eggs and hash browns were clearly fresh scrambled and fresh cooked but the biscuits and croissants were rock hard....and that is not an exaggeration. The French toast was also anything but light. Overall, would eat here again but not a must do. read more

Yikes the breakfast buffet needs a major overhaul.... No care given to the food. Honestly the food at ihop is about the same quality and if you don't think people are noticing you're wrong.... Booked us for a 1pm lunch (closes at 2) but they started to pack everything up around 1:30. Manager was nonexistent didn't come around and check on people or I would have kindly let them know this information in person. It was supposed to be a special breakfast ended up very disappointing. -Potatoes cold and no seasoning -Grits tasted instant and no butter, cream, or salt added -gravy was absolutely disgusting strange consistency -the ketchup was spoiled...gross -my mom asked for pineapple juice and Champaign but got a strangely colored unidentified neon orange juice instead...either it was off or not correct juice (wasn't orange) -- juices all not fresh... -a spill happened (no biggie!) but then they never came to clean it up which is a safety problem on a wood floor for staff and guests Only highlights were the prime rib and the French toast which I could tell was once good at least (end of day things). Also it's a cute rustic location. Overall really dissatisfied especially for the price. AVOID THEIR BUFFET! They clearly don't know how to execute. I truly loved this restaurant. It is a sprawling, rustic restaurant tucked away from the main part of Charlottesville. The ambience was so warm and wonderful and everyone was so friendly. The menu was interesting and the food was presented beautifully. Overall I enjoyed the food very much. I thoroughly enjoyed the wild boar dish I selected. There were a few little flavor quirks in certain dishes that I felt were a miss but almost everything I tasted was a hit. They were very kind and accommodating to dietary restriction and substitution requests. I was thrilled to find out that they even had bread back in the kitchen to bring out for GF diners. It was essentially toast, but toasted perfectly and with the amazing honey butter it really hit the spot. I will definitely return for seconds when I find myself in Charlottesville again. read more

1st time visit to Mill Room, with reservations for two 11/16 based on advertised Sunday prime rib special. Much to our disappointment there was no prime rib available, chef did not make it per our server Erick. We had to settle for other options on the menu or choice of two specials. Erick was a great server without being pesty. The butternut squash soup was excellent, dinners we had salmon and strip steak were prepared well but regular table knife was better at cutting strip steak than dull steak knife provided. I did notice a disturbing practice of those cleaning tables for the next guests. I observed 1 person wiping around the items in the center of the table without moving said items (salt & pepper etc.) out of the way to clean the whole table. Also another wiping at a window table without moving items then wiping seats and returning to finish wiping table with same cloth. This is an honest opinion of a first time experience. The noise level can be disturbing as the attendance increased. Pricey! read more

Fantastic dinner for my birthday! First the food, We ordered a bottle of local wine to start and we're given a champagne toast. Then came the bread. THE BREAD! So good! We ordered the mussel appetizer and it was delicious and a generous serving. We ordered the roasted duck and New York strip appetizers which were both outstanding. Couldn't take a picture in time because I was too excited to dig in. We also ordered a side of Brussel sprouts which were absolutely fantastic. Finally, they brought out a chocolate mousse dessert which was *chefs kiss*! Second , the service was more than I could ask for. All staff were friendly and helpful. Our server, Ovi, was a joy! We've been here over the years and the food is classic and we've enjoyed seeing the menu evolve while remaining hearty, imaginative and filling. We ate here during Restaurant Week, hoping to try a new place. The food was good, but the service was so so bad that in the end we could only laugh about it. 25 minutes to see our server for the first time, 40 minutes to get our drinks, another 25 minutes to get the first course, etc. When we turned down dessert (even though it was included in the RW meal), since we had already been there THREE HOURS, we made the excuse we had to get back to our animals. This caused the server to tear up and literally RUN AWAY from the table. He returned 20 minutes later to explain he had recently lost a beloved pet. I felt sorry for him, but it made the entire evening feel even more farcical. Total Restaurant Week fail, we'll never return. read more

Yesterday we reserved a table for seven. This was a special family time for us. We were seated promptly at 7:30, but were then basically forgotten. The drink service was so sporadic one of us went to the bar to get drinks. Two of the.guests were children, ages 5 and 8. The younger child fell asleep at the table. The food was mediocre at best. I'm not sure what was worse - the food or the couple arguing three tables away. This was my second visit to the Old Mill Room. I'd been here about 5 or so years ago - long before my husband and I *really* started exploring the world of restaurants - but I remembered liking it and when I had the opportunity to return on a whim, I jumped at the chance. I remember the dining room had been charming and the food very good (this place isn't cheap - but I have no problem paying good money for good food). Unfortunately, I'm not sure if my tastes have changed significantly since then but this meal definitely did not live up to my expectations. We arrived at the restaurant after checking into the Boar's Head for an 8:30pm reservation. We were seated promptly (we should be - there were only three other occupied tables in the restaurant). On Labor Day evening, the night before everyone returns back to school/work, and at 8:30pm - I didn't expect the restaurant to be super busy so this did not deter me. The dining room was just as I remembered - elegant and rustic. I love the atmosphere and the exposed wood tones. Unfortunately, that's where most of the pleasantness ended. After perusing the menu, my husband and I decided pretty quickly what we wanted to eat, as it was on the later side - but we weren't able to order for at least 10 minutes because the waitress was too busy yapping with one of the only other tables in the restaurant. I swear she talked with them for 15 minutes. This normally wouldn't bother me, but I just wanted to order and was a bit frustrated that I had to wait so long to do so with the restaurant being nearly empty. Other than that wait, though, service was pleasant and timely. We were provided a lovely amuse bouche - a blueberry "soup." It was very tasty and was served chilled, which I appreciated on such a hot day. For appetizers, I ordered the spicy lump crab and compressed cucumber salad and my husband had the tomato tart tartin and here is where the food disappointments began. My crab was nearly flavorless, as was the avocado puree. The best thing about my dish was the little cucumbers that each bite of crab sat upon. My husband's tartin had a nice flavor, but the pastry was incredibly thin and ended up becoming soggy quickly. We agreed his appetizer was the better of the two dishes, overall. For dinner, I ordered the trout and my husband had the crab cake. I'm glad I didn't order the crab cake, because his crab cake was the most expensive filler-filled crab cake he's ever eaten. He was incredibly disappointed (heck, Artie's in Fairfax makes a better crab cake). Not only was there barely any crab meat and 90% filler, but the dish needed seasoning badly. My trout was better and it was cooked with a crispy skin. However, I didn't taste anything like brandy lobster sauce that the trout was supposed to be topped with and it's only now that I look back at the menu online to ensure I get this review right that I realize what my husband called "cat throw-up" on my plate was actually supposed to be a black eyed pea and lobster cake. Bland, bland bland. Saving grace...I liked the bread? To make matters worse, as I mentioned at the beginning, the couple a few tables down from us was probably having the most expensive argument ever - she started crying twice in between their extremely heated...discussions. Very nice atmosphere - romantic and elegant. It was too dark to see outside but I think it'll be a good scenary. I think there is a lake or a creek right next to the restaurant. Food was fantastic: I got pumpkin soup as an appetizer, beef tenderloin as main dish, and cheesecake for dessert. Pumkin soup was warm and delicious but it had fried shrimp or something which did not go well with the soup. Meat was perfectly cooked, and cheesecake had walnuts and it was tasty! Their complimentary dessert, which was dark chocolate with strawberry cream was very good. it was perfect combination of sweetness and a little bit of sourness. Great place. Cozy but the atmosphere is very much of one for a nice evening out. More lively than I expected. Definitely not stuffy. My group of 6 ordered about everything on the menu between us. Everyone was pleased with their food. Both presentation and taste were on the spot. Before apps, we were served an amuse bouche of seared tuna with a wasabi aioli and a basket of soft and delicious rosemary bread with fresh creamy melt-in-your mouth butter. I had the seared scallop appetizer ($12). A little on the salty side, but perfectly cooked and still delicious. For the main course, I had the grilled sea bass ($28). Great texture and no fishy taste, but a little lacking in salt and pepper... My bf's lamb loin was a perfect medium rare, with great flavors and texture. Wait staff is very knowledgeable and we were recommended a bottle of german riesling ($30) upon asking. Even the non-wine drinkers enjoyed this wine and I definitely could have downed the whole bottle myself. For dessert, a chocolate mousse on a layer of praline. Served with a bit of ice cream on an interesting strawberry marshmallow. Dessert could have been better, but that's just my expert sweet tooth being picky. After dessert, we also received pieces of chocolate truffles. I would love to come back again soon. read more

Great food and fantastic service. I made reservations in person when waiting for our room to be ready. They asked if it was a special evening to which I said that we were here for the night to celebrate my wife's birthday. Lo and behold, when we came to dinner several hours later they sat us at a table for two in front of the roaring wood burning fireplace. Our waitperson was fabulous engaging us a a lively conversation, never making us feel rushed, and always making us feel like we were her most important table despite a full dining room. We had a great talk with her about their insistence on high quality locally supplied food and were pleased to see the chicken was provided by Polyface Farms (Herb Roasted Polyface Farms Chicken Roulade,Truffle Confit Chicken Stuffing, Braised Collards, AM FOG Mushroom Madiera Cream Sauce). The organic mushrooms on the braised collard greens were delicious. The best greens I've ever had. The chef sent out complimentary shrimp cheese grits while we were waiting for dinner and I ate ever bit. I don't even like grits. Dessert was fantastic as well with flourless dark stout chocolate cake for me and apple crisp with blue cheese ice cream for my wife. Her plate had 'Happy Birthday" written on it with chocolate sauce and I scored major points for my thoughtful dinner planning when all I did was mention it to the hostess!
