Went there tonight so very disappointed. Food was dropped off at our table with 5 items coming out wrong and 1 missing item. As we waited for a fix the fix came out wrong. The manger then comes over to see what happened. We explained it all he leaves then a new server comes over and said our original server was sent home and she taking over. She gives our bill to table which was wrong also. They blamed the server but the manager is the one that should of been sent home. As a frequent visitor to the happy hour at Matchbox, I finally tried the brunch with my mother on a Saturday. We decided to do the bottomless tapas brunch box. I can honestly say the menu has something for everyone. We tried to try a little of everything, but the highlights for us were the shrimp and grits, eggs, biscuits and gravy, and the #1 highlight the pound cake French toast. Omg it was perfectly sweet and refreshing with the strawberries. The mimosas are also $3 when you order the brunch box. Definitely one of the better deals in DTSS for brunch. read more

I've been eating at Matchbox since the first one opened in Chinatown all those years ago. I was a regular there and was thrilled when they opened one next to me in Capitol Hill. Later on I moved into the hinterlands of VA and they opened one by me at One Loudon. Now I'm back in MD and they've opened one next to me in Silver Spring which saves me the regular drives to the Rockville location. This locally owned group is growing like crazy and I was standing there waiting for them to open on day one (I was either the first or second customer at this location). I don't get anything from this review and can sometimes be a harsh critic but it's hard to take away anything from Matchbox, hence 5 out of 5 stars. Obviously the first week this one was open service was less consistent but erred on the side of too many people trying to help rather than too few but since then it's smoothed out and I've had universally great service. Currently my favorite server is Olivia as she's always super friendly and speedy on my refills (some days I drink soda like I just walked out of a desert) though everyone is solid. There was someone when they launched whose name I'm blanking on that was also amazing (I think she was from the 14th Street location). Both of them exude competence like so many of the Matchbox staff (particularly the managers - something I've noticed is consistent across all locations except perhaps Rockville where I've sat unserved for 15-20 mins a couple of times). The thing about Matchbox isn't that they have the best local pizza (they may not - though it's definitely top 3) but rather that it's a complete experience and almost everything I've had on the menu is a 8-10. This means that if I'm hungry and I want a solid environment - whether that's for a first date, a place to bring the family, if I want to listen to the live music in the Silver Spring square, pop out my laptop and work during lunch or just sit back and people watch for a bit - it's always a great choice. This location has rolled out their new menus as well (one for lunch and one for dinner)... although there's a secret... you can usually order whatever you want from either menu anytime. They also have the epic brunch deal on Sat/Sun which is $25 for all you can eat. I can show up and if I want my usual double pepperoni pizza - perfect! If I want a giant meatball with amazing pepperoni sauce (seriously, it's delicious) I'm set. A remarkably solid burger or delicious sliders? You betcha! They also have a new item I've not seen at other Matchbox's which is the giant meatball served on pasta. Over the first week I'd have rated it a 6-7 out of 10 in terms of taste but they modified the recipe since then and now it's a solid 8-10 (and super delicious). That kind of change is exactly why I love Matchbox - they are relentless in trying to improve their food, their service and then once it's rocking they lock it down and don't simply change things for the sake of change like some other DC establishments. Just had a pretty perfect lunch today at Matchbox Silver Spring (I almost hadn't realized the new spot opened right here in my backyard!) My friend and I ordered light, but we enjoyed the vibes and had so much to discuss. I was between the crab and avo appetizer and a full entree, but found the perfect chicken and kale salad! You wouldn't even believe it was kale upon first taste but with the right dressing to compliment it, the greens can be flavorful and crunchy. That is exactly what matchbox achieved here. Topped with grilled chicken, heirloom tomato, and carrots (it comes with farro too but I went grainless today). My friend ordered shrimp and grits appetizer and all she could say is she wished there was more of it on the plate, it was very good! We ordered a small pie and another chicken and kale salad to go. The waitress was expert-level, she was knowledgeable, precise and accommodating. Needless to say, it was well worth the tip for such wonderful service. While the food, once it finally arrived was delicious, there was a serious problem with the service. My DIL made a brunch reservation over a month ago. We arrived before my son and DIL and were seated in the rear of the restaurant. We placed our drink order and were then asked to move to the front of the restaurant as they needed our space for a party of 8. Certainly, not a problem for us. We moved and waited for the rest of our party. Our son and DIL arrived ..... we waited for their drink orders to be taken.....didn't happen. Once they finally were taken, my husband and I received our original drink orders, first by one server, then a second server....in duplicate. Had they been other than iced tea, I would have loved the error! The manager arrived and said she'd take care of us from then on. She took the rest of the drink orders and our food orders. We waited. Drinks finally arrived. Then, two parties near us arrived, placed orders, were SERVED, and we had yet to see any food. Had to ask for sweetener for tea twice, hot sauce which arrived two times, since the right hand had no idea what the left hand was doing....again. Overall, had we not had such an awful service experience, this would have been a solidly positive experience, for our first time. While we noted the poor experience to the manager, and 25% was removed from our bill, we would have preferred the service we had expected and would have gladly paid full price. So, a discounted bill, while nice, did not make any of us want to return, due to the poor service. read more

An incredible disappointment. The customer service is decent, but the food leaves much to be desired. I ordered the Honey Butter Biscuits. The biscuits were close to brunt, hard, and dry. I sent them back, and new fresh biscuits were delivered. It was good. I ordered the shrimp and grits. The cajun cream sauce was broken, barely worth mentioning compared to the food being ice cold. Compared to milk and honey and the matchbox at fashion centre.... 0 out of 0 would not recommend. Only giving a star because I had to. The host was so preoccupied with one of the waitresses it was a shame. Another waitress had a full FaceTime conversation at the hostess desk, clearly unoccupied by the actual hostess. The server was ok. And that's being nice, we didn't get any refills nor did she check on us once the food came, one of the other wait staff had to get her just for us to get the bill. The pizza was old, let them know they "remade" it and 3 minutes later the same tired stale pizza was back out. We won't be back. And we know the quality of Thompson Hospitality and this isn't it. The pizza is very good and there are many other good options on the menu for when you want something a little different. We enjoy the sliders and sandwiches and I especially like the roasted chicken. This is a review of my service. Server was the definition of unprofessional. Had been sitting at the outside table for less than one minute and was already rushing me to order. I asked him kindly if he could turn on the warmers since it was cold outside, he gave me an attitude and told me "If you're cold then why are you sitting outside?". Really?? Two strikes was enough for me, went inside and decided to order to-go. As I was waiting for my to-go food, I caught him giving me dirty looks and mouthing something about me. I'm sorry but I expect better service from Matchbox. I will not be returning here if the servers do not know customer service. On the plus side, pizza was good when warmed up in the oven, the manager was nice when I brought up the issue to him and so was the hostess. Server left much to be desired. read more

Our server never came to check on us after our food was delivered. Went to the bar to ask for our mimosas and she basically told us to fuck off because she is behind. Excellent scrumptious tasting food, an excellent waitress named Desiree, but a rude female person who answered the phone when I called back . Here's the deal - I had a wonderful experience at this matchbox! The food was absolutely amazing. I had chicken and waffles, and a Mimosa, and my friend enjoyed a crab dish. We raved about how he couldn't wait to come back! The atmosphere is warm, upbeat vibe and friendly. Prices are reasonable. They have a new menu from "Milk and Honey", which is a scrumptious breakfast spot in New York. Apparently, matchbox purchased the "Milk and Honey" restaurants that you find in some cities and this only adds to the experience - "Milk and Honey" had an excellent menu. The only reason I gave the 4 rating is because of the experience I had when I left. You see, upon preparing to close out the bill, I handed a "second" waitress, not our original waitress Desiree, my credit card to cash us out. I quickly signed, said my goodbyes to my girlfriend and left. Later, glancing at the receipt- I realized the second waitress did not add the drinks. I did not want Desiree to get in trouble, so I called back the restaurant to give her the credit card info. A very rude female person answered the phone when I reached the restaurant and asked me WHY I was looking for Desiree. When I explained that she was our waitress and I was a customer who had just left, the young lady who answered said "well she's not here and why are you asking for her?" I was flabbergasted. In case our original waitress had made a mistake or something I didn't want to tell the person who answer the phone. I asked her if she was the business owner or manager and she repeated, "well she's not here" and hung up. This was just so unexpected and unfortunate - I hope that rude female "phone answerer" person was just an anomaly. ‍ Lesson here - you can have a scrumptious meal, enjoy yourself while you are there. *Brunch review only* We reserved a table here for brunch to celebrate a special occasion. However, we did not know the ONLY way to get brunch foods is to order the unlimited brunch. This unlimited brunch, $28 per person, does NOT include any beverages (no coffee or tea or mimosa). We asked the manager if it's possible to order a la carte or to split the brunch and they said that's not possible. We ended up gorging ourselves (food arriving 4-5 bites at a time) to get our money's worth, but wish we would have known that the ONLY way to get brunch food is to do unlimited before making this reservation. We should have just gone to Eggspectations next-door to get the same food for half the price. There were not many meatless or gluten free options on this brunch menu either. read more

Went this past weekend with a small group. Originally the group was large and shrunk twice down to only 6. The food was good. The place was clean. When the check came, the server said she didn't know how to split the check. It became very confusing figuring how to pay. Some people paid cash, which should have made it easier. To top it off, someone was charged twice! The whole check and server issue at the end left a bad taste. Would I go back, probably not. read more

Matchbox Silver Spring is a nice addition to downtown Silver Spring. They've been there for sometime now but I have recently started visiting this location to try their pizza. I am admittedly an and pizza fan but I have been trying to venture out to try other options in the area. Kind of difficult to locate if you're unfamiliar but easier way to describe is that it's across the street from ulta beauty. We ordered a double pepperoni for pickup and our order was fresh hot and delicious. I enjoyed the then layer of sauce and the crispness of the roni's. Solid pizza with great taste. Haven't dined in yet but the interior while dark, looked inviting. Will have to check them out for date night one day read more

ROACHES BEWARE I visited Matchbox/Milk& Honey in Silver Spring on June 28th around 6pm for dinner with a friend. We were seated in a booth next to the kitchen. The restaurant appeared fairly busy and there was no regard for social distancing however the wait staff did wear masks. While waiting for our food several roaches ran down the wall from the kitchen to our booth. Startled by the sight we alerted the wait staff and asked to be reseated. The wait staff was nonchalant about the encounter and didn't volunteer to reseat us (we had to ask). This made me feel as if the encounter wasn't a one-off occurrence. After speaking to the manager we were informed that the restaurant undergoes weekly extermination (on Wednesdays) for pests. Needless to say I didn't feel comfortable eating at an establishment with a pest problem so we left. The food may have been good but I can't trust any food coming out of a kitchen where roaches are active. read more

I'd just like to say that I gave Matchbox 3 stars because the food is awesome. But, this isn't about my experience as a dine-in guest, but about my experience with management. I was very interested in working for Matchbox after having a great conversation with an employee who worked at the Cinatown location. He said it was a great company to work for, even after recently being purchased by the owners of Hen Quarter. The silver spring location in close to my home, so I filled an application online while I was there. I asked to speak to the hiring manager who is also the GM. The hostess went to let him know that I wanted to indroduce myself to him, and he told her that he would be over in a few minutes and to have a seat as he was currently occupied. I have worked in the restaurant industry for more than a decade, having hosted, served, bar tended, and I was also a GM for a fast casual restaurant in Bethesda for more than a year. I was excited about potentially working for this company because I heard the culture was above that of a typical restaurant and that there are opportunities for growth and development. The GM, Brian, left me sitting there for a little more than an hour while he finished his business and moved on to talking and joking around with the other managers and employees. Not once did he come over and introduce himself to me, tell me that it was not a good time to talk, or tell me that he would review my application and contact me if he felt I was a good fit. I'm perhaps a little traditional in that I like to make a good first impression and actively show management that I am enthusiastic about work. He could have had the decency to tell me or have any of the workers tell me that he was unavailable. To be flat out ignored like that felt humilliating and dehumanizing and also completely dispelled any interest I had in working for Matchbox. If the managers in this location think it's ok to treat people this way, I can't imagine how their treatment of their own staff will degrade, and if the employee's don't feel valued or engaged then you'd better believe the guest's experience will eventually decline. So, eat here because the food is great, but don't expect too much from the employees, as it seems they have a terrible example to follow. read more
