Their salesman was excellent and knowledgeable. In the sommer of 2022 they installed a wood burning fireplace insert (Empire brand). It was right sized both for my small fireplace and for whole house heating. After burning wood to heat the house for many years I was surprised by the learning curve. The old stove was so called air tight (it wasn't). The new stove truly is... After I learned how to use it I must say it does the job and it looks good! The spring of 2023 Matchless came back and completed chimney repairs. Everything they have done has been exactly as it was supposed to be done. I am conflicted. A very nice fellow came to do my service. It was clear, at the end of his day, that he wanted it over. It was the quickest service that I have had in the past five years with Matchless. I did the math and I paid $17 a minute. At 1:15, having arranged my day around this maintenance, I called to confirm (again) that I had the correct day. I (again) experienced a dour call manager, who needs to go to charm school. She made it clear that i was inconveniencing her and that my call was an irritation. Yes, the appointment was confirmed for today and the call was scheduled between 1 and 4, but because the technician was dealing with a lengthy service it would be closer to 4 (got it; that might have been nice to know rather than keeping a customer -- a 5 year customer-- waiting and needing to call to get this update.) I did the math immediately after he left: Again I paid $17 a MINUTE for the time the fellow was here. Again, he was very nice, and he was tolerant of my (exceedingly friendly) dog. Do I feel I received thorough service? Absolutely not. I have been here for 3 of the previous services (my wife was here for one) and they were far more lengthy and I was asked to review the work afterwards (this time I asked to see a demonstration that all was working) The technician did explain the state of the unit and the likelihood of its continued use. During and after the visit I began to consider whether there were viable options. I started to compare this to a lengthy visit (and considerably less expensive) from the very high quality local firm that services my AC and furnace. (And, they are LOVELY on the phone) Matchless is know (or has been) for superb service. I don't know whether a viable, consistent option exists. I have previously felt the huge charge was worth the investment and assurance I have received from a local company. Now I feel that I need to explore other options. read more

They had to come back to my house 3 times after installed a $8000 fireplace.... First time, they forgot to connect the propane - no comment. Second time, our flame set on "high" was about 2" above the fake logs - not appropriate given how much we paid for it. While service tech was at our house for 3+ hours fixing the issue, he left and the problem remained unresolved. Third time they came back to readdress the problem they never fixed and told me that "they never got to actually fix the problem because he felt rushed...". my husband was home, laid off all day and we had 2 other contractors on property doing things at our new home. I returned with my wife that evening and, like me, she was sold, and we were both grateful that Tim helped us select a great unit. We stopped into Matchless Stove & Chimney because we need a new woodstove and we have being doing a lot of research. It was a miserable and rainy day and we showed up at 3:30pm, a half an hour before closing time. We were greeted promptly buy a nice guy named Isiah. We told him what we had and what we wanted and asked him for some information and opinion on what would work best. For the next half an hour, he thoroughly went over all the pros and cons of each different woodstove and insert, gave us opinions on what he thought would be the best for us. In the end, not even having planned to do so, we decided to buy the model he recommended. He worked with us and gave us not only a good deal, but also a good financing plan, and set us up on the spot for installation. In the long run, we wound up spending more than we wanted to, but felt that with the guidance and information Isiah gave us, this was a good decision. He never seemed aggrevated about having to stay a whole hour later. He was funny, very helpful, and really seemed to care about and love his job. We appreciated his willingness to explain so much and answer our multitude of questions. We are having our new woodstove insert installed in a couple of weeks. They are supposed to do everything they need to do and we should not have to do anything other than be there. I would be remiss if I did not take the time to review my experience with the Matchless Stove and Chimney in Clifton Park, NY. We had several issues during the installation which were more to do with our gas company than Matchless Stove and Chimney. They went out of their way to fix any issues we had in a very timely manner. Also during installation they accidentally hit our A/C Refrigerant line and took complete responsibility and paid us in full for the repair estimate that we received. It was a very difficult installation since we have a very old house with a flagstone basement and very little area for them to get the gas line through the wall. Matchless installed a wood stove insert at my house about 10 years ago. I used them for the annual service for several years until I realized they were charging a lot more than other local business. At that point I stopped using them for the annual service, but still went to their store to buy parts and other accessories. Since my stove uses firebricks that are but into custom shapes, I continued to buy the bricks from them until they sold me the bricks that were not cut into the proper size. I wound up buying the bricks from another local shop that was closer since I did not always have the time to travel the 30 plus minutes to get to their store. When I did finally have the time to get to their store a week or two later, the owner charged me a restocking fee. Complaining that the bricks were not cut properly by Matchless staff did not matter to him. I spent over $5500 on a wood stove and the install. The owner lost my business for good because he was so greedy that had to charge a restocking fee on a few fire bricks. read more

I called the week prior looking for an estimate to get the chimney/fireplace back in working order due to the fire which occurred on Dec 1. Spoke with John letting him know my long fight with the insurance company as they haven't agreed to pay for the chimney. For those who have never gone through this, I wouldn't wish the stress on anyone. John informed me that I would need to pay for an "Insurance Survey" for 399 which would be out of pocket. John told me this was required by the President of the company to "Dot I's and Cross T's" and then requested all information about my claim (Red Flag number 1) and other chimney companies would require the same. I called 2 other chimney places and they all agreed to come out and never mentioned a "Insurance Survey"(Flag number 2). Called the following week and spoke to Leslie and asked her what was the insurance survey for. She referred me to Tim. Tim never gave me a direct answer only stating its required and offered to do it for 299. I asked multiple times, "What am I paying for". After about 5-6 mins of question dodging(Red Flag number 3), Tim said they wouldn't be able to come out and do an inspection for a few weeks since they were really busy with this type of work. My issue with Matchless Chimney is full transparency is much needed in times like this and I don't believe Matchless Chimney is working in that capacity. We chose Matchless a few months ago after receiving three quotes to do an installation of a gas fireplace insert into our 1870 home. All three proposed the exact same insert model. We chose Matchless because they performed a detailed analysis to produce the quote and offered six month 0% financing. Matchless was not the least expensive quote we received ... we chose them because they offered professionalism AND a reasonable quote. We had numerous preparatory discussions with their engineer at the office (John) ... he was always available and returned calls promptly. John was a good indication of what was to come at installation time. The installers arrived at the promised date/time. In short, this installation (the marble fireplace) presented numerous difficulties (removing the existing glued-on and bolted cast iron insert INTACT, integrating both gas and electric in the basement and ensuring that the new insert fit well). The difficulties presented by this old home were no match for Shane. He faced each difficulty with absolute professionalism. The installation consumed the entire day. We closely watched the entire process as we were concerned about preserving the existing insert as well as preserving the marble fireplace - all went well. We could not be more satisfied with how Matchless performed for us. We called and thanked Bill, their General Manager and offered our gratitude to an excellent company. read more

The sales rep I spoke to was very helpful and informative despite me getting the stove I wanted to install from another place (fully refurbished family heirloom). Since the rebuild I have had nothing but problems. They tell me its routine to need a new pilot light every year and they have no problem charging for the service call. This is our second winter with our new wood stove we purchased from Isaiah in Glenmont. We had an older Vermont Castings that was well beyond its prime. Based on our budget and needs, Isaiah showed us a Grandview by Lennox which checked all of our needs and it wasn't bad looking either. We did speak with at least three other places before committing but we felt most comfortable with Isaiah. We had the chimney already installed so the installers just unhooked and removed the old stove and hooked up the new. They were efficient, polite and neat. Going into our second winter we had planned on getting the chimney cleaned but also had a new problem of a leaking roof at the wood stove flashing (remember, last summer was really wet!). Jesse came out and cleaned the pipe, surveyed the roof flashing (done by another contractor) and put additional caulk on as we were expecting more rain. Jesse was punctual, efficient, polite and very knowledgeable. Isaiah got back to us with a reasonable quote and scheduled the job fairly quickly. We did use email as our primary contact so it was easier for all of us to respond quickly to each other. Shane and his assistant came out to repair our roof and flashing which ended up taking two days (again, they were punctual and called to let me know their ETA). We had additional roof tiles which they used and it looks better than it did before, never mind that it doesn't leak! Oh, because our roof lines are unique, we had some possible draft issues which Isaiah had suggested adding a VacuStack cap to our pipe and it definitely has made an improvement! So far, our experiences with Matchless in Glenmont have been positive and we would recommend Isaiah. read more

Long story short, we paid a lot of money over the years to have something fixed in our gas insert fireplace that wasn't fixed until yesterday. The representative who scheduled our appointment didn't listen to the reason for my call, scheduled an appointment for a cleaning, when I really just wanted the issue fixed (that had been identified previously), and it cost me an extra $175. The manager was not much help, basically ignoring my issues with the customer service thus far, and promising me a discount on a future service. Not only does that not address this current issue, but we won't need service for awhile. We will not be using this company if we don't have to. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because Jesse, who serviced the unit, was knowledgable, nice and professional. He had someone else with him who barely spoke and didn't seem to help or contribute to the job at all. Is this where the money is going? Disappointed in the customer service all around. read more

I purchased a gas fireplace insert from Matchless after my deal with a competitor fell through due to installation complications (the competitor wanted me to pay more for equipment to reach the top of my very tall chimney). Matchless gave me a competitive price on a nicer insert, and they assured me that installation would not be a problem for them. The installation was difficult, but Matchless had the necessary equipment and personnel to make it happen. Given my experience with the other company, this was impressive enough, but it is Matchless' high product standards that truly set them apart. After completing the installation, the installers explained that the fireplace screen was not exactly as the owner, Isaiah, expected so he was ordering a more expensive, custom screen for me at no additional cost. Mind you, the original screen wasn't really defective, and I had not even seen it yet to complain about it - It just was not up to Isaiah's standard. I have never had a company reject a product on my behalf and upgrade it without a lot of pressure from me. Based on my experience, I recommend Matchless without hesitation. We will never use Matchless Stove & Chimney again! In 2003 we had quite a bit of work done by Matchless. Wood stove insert, top of our chimney rebuilt and relined. My husband noticed the "upgraded weather bricks" Isaiah (the owner's son) talked us into upgrading to are spalling, they are basically crumbling. When I called their office this morning to ask if someone could come out and take a look I was told sure for a $125.00 service fee. I was shocked as they were the one who did the work on my now spalling brick chimney. The person who I was speaking with was morning was Isaiah ( owner's son) who was also the one who rebuilt the spalling brick chimney for us. He went on to tell me "well its been 10 years" I went on to tell him the entire rest of our chimney which is almost 50 years old is not crumbling. I said I totally understand charging people for estimates for work however I don't understand how Isaiah could still insist on charging us this fee as he was the one himself who did the work on our now crumbling chimney. I stated I thought this was ridiculous and horrible customer service from company that was supposedly built on good customer service. I then proceeded to tell Isaiah we would probably no longer be having any kind of work done by Matchless nor would I recommend them to anyone else. Did I mention our home is no more than a few miles from their Glenmont NY store?? It really would not have taken them so far our of their way to come and take a look at our crumbling chimney. Not only did Isaiah have terrible customer service he also insulted me when he asked "is there someone else in the home he could speak to who was more reasonable". I will not do business with Matchless Stove & Chimney again. I had them come out for a service call in October 2012 for a gas fireplace. My fireplace was not turning on, so I figured they could clean it out since it had not been serviced & also figure out why it was not turning on. They performed their service & also replaced the light switch, thermocouple & thermopile. Total cost was $411 before tax. Fireplace worked fine last winter. So now a year later, the fireplace is not turning on again. Called Matchless up to see if they can come out to check it out. I am told they are scheduling appointments into late November & early December (at least 3 weeks from now). Also that it will cost $225 for a service call. Asked if they guarantee their work, and that it seems to me that whatever was done last year obviously was not done right, or something has gone wrong with it. They say they DO guarantee the work but if it worked last year then they would still have to charge me the service call fee. To me this is poor customer service. You would think a family owned business would want to retain their customer base. They did not offer to come out to make sure what they did last year has not broken. If it was my business, I would go out of my way to make sure my customers were satisfied. I am condensing a very long story is my reason for 1 star. 2 story new construction home, 2 gas fireplaces purchased in July. They were installed, drywall, insulation and piping. Waiting fabrication for a custom stainless chase top. The following occured when the top was ready to install- I received a call from Isaiah informing me he will need to install scaffolding or rent a boom lift to install the cap due to the height of chimney, and that would cost my wife and I anywhere from $600-1000. This is where it went south, which I will add started out well. I asked why we has charging us additional for this when the job scope stated the install was included in the overall price we paid. Isaiah stated he didn't know his installers had a problem initially and couldn't install the cap when the time came. He informed me, and I quote,'I broke even on this sale and am not going to lose money renting a boom lift to finish the job'. I informed him this was the poorest excuse I've ever heard from a business who touts their service so highly, which was why we purchased from them in the first place. I was told he will call me back after I expressed my dissatisfaction. I never received a call, but an email the next day stating the job was done. Curious, I called him and asked how he managed to install the cap. He stated that luckily there was a contractor at the house who was using a boom lift that day, and he offered to buy the contractor beer in exchange to use his lift. His poor planning placed our builder in a high liability situation, which we could be counter sued for if someone were injured using that lift. Isaiah informed me he had to modify the piping at the top of the chase a little to fit the cap and the cost would be another $134 for the parts, which at this point for my own sanity and stress level accompanied with a house build, I paid for to be done with it, and to not have to deal with him again, even though the piping should have been run properly in the first place so when the cap went on, it would fit. Again, install issues not my problem, but he made them my problem and charged me. I have never commented or wrote about my dissatisfaction with a company until now. Although it all did work out in the end, and they did not charge us for a bad blower fan that one of the units needed, I would not recommend dealing with this business. Very unprofessional, and unnecessary added stress and aggravation was placed on us during our house build that should not have occurred. If you've ever built, you know you deal with many people and businesses during the phase, and Matchless were the only ones I would not recommend to a friend or coworker. read more

I've wanted a Vermont Castings gas stove/ heater for years. I finally got one on 3/3/15 through Matchless Stove & Chimney. I am very pleased with my entire experience. The salesman Tim sat with us for an hour in the showroom discussing the specs and answering questions. He was very patient, professional, and responsive to follow up e-mails that I sent prior to installation. The crew who measured my home for the unit was punctual and efficient. The installation crew arrived early, worked diligently day, and cleaned up before they left. The only downside was the final bill exceeded the estimate by 125.00 due to some slight modifications. Really bad customer service! I purchased a $2000 gift certificate for my son for his birthday. The only reason I did was because I was guaranteed my money back if he changed his mind. After he found out he couldn't put a stove in his cellar like he wanted too, I went to the Clifton Park store to get my refund since that's where I purchased it. Tim took a copy of it and said he would let accounting know.So, I called and was told they needed the original and it had to be done at their Glenmont store which is a hike compared to Clifton Park, where it was purchased! I brought the original down to the Glenmont store and nobody was there that could give refunds. I left the original there because I had no reason to think these people were thieves! I received a check for $1950 in the mail from them. I called and explained to Sharon that the salesman said I would be fully refunded if my son changed his mind. I wouldn't have purchased it if he didn't assure me of that! They had the salesman call and apologize saying he was new and didn't know about any fee they would take. Everytime I call now, the lady who answers the phone says Sharon isn't there,and puts me on somebodys voice mail that never calls me back. I called twice and asked for an owner, again 2 different voicemails and no call back.Really, for $50 bucks you would lose a customer ! I purchased a Vermont Casting wood stove which I absolutely love. That being said if you want one buy it somewhere else. When they came to install the stove they removed the old before even looking at the new one. When they did look at the new one we discovered that the salesman had ordered the wrong flue on the back of the stove. Even after looking at numerous photos and have their man come and do an inspection to make sure they could install it. I guys who installed it were nice,polite and friendly they just were not strong enough or trained properly in how to install the stove. They drag it over my hearth leaving large scratches in the stone. After many phone calls by me they sent back the same two men with a cordless drill and a buffing pad. Needless to say that does not remove large scratches well. I have call and left voice mails for the owner of the company but he will not return my calls. It has been a month now and I still have gotten no solution from the company. I highly recommend you look elsewhere if you are buying a wood stove. read more

Stay away! The salesperson blatantly lied to us regarding a chimney repair. The owner gave us $400 back and made it seem like he was doing us a favor. We chalked it up to the deception of the salesperson and then had them clean our chimney in November 2012. We noticed the chimney started to work less efficiently a couple weeks ago and we called to have it serviced before the huge storm hit our area that was predicted to knock out power. I was told that our Fisher woodstove requires 2 chimney cleanings a year. I stated I never heard that previously from anyone including his pervious chimney cleaners who serviced us and we never had this problem previously before the chimney was fixed by their company. I stated I was concerned due to the impending storm that we would lose power and then have no heat. He stated there was nothing he could do and said he could have someone take a look and charge us in 7 days. I said I have 2 young kids and I was concerned for their safety. He told me he has 5 kids. We spent $6000 on a stove and installation from them and they simply won't help us with support. The service people and manager, Matt, are snotty and hostile, and basically act as if they are the only game in town. After coming to our house in 2009 for a service call in which they damaged our roof and caused leakage, they grudgingly came out and repaired the damage, but since then have refused follow up work - as if somehow we were responsible for the damage they caused.
