First off, my massage therapist, Nicole, was wonderful. She was really pleasant and kind and did a great job on the massage. My review is totally separate from her work. I spent about $240 on a prenatal massage and expected a really relaxing experience, but the studio itself took away from that. It was very dark and dingy and the massage table was a very uncomfortable plastic material that was covered in very scratchy sheets. There was no music, scents, or ambient lighting and the whole experience was just okay. I probably won't be coming back but if you do book an appointment, Nicole is really nice! read more

Janet is incredible. I went to maternal massage 5 weeks post partum and Janet's hands are just what I needed. Next time I have a baby I will definitely go see here for a prenatal massage. The center is extremely accommodating to bellies of all sizes and breastfeeding moms. I plan on making this my main massage center in NYC because it was the best massage I have received in the city. Found this place when I was 30 weeks when I was feeling extreme pain in my lower back, hips and flutes. I was looking for a place which specialized in prenatal massages, not a spa that offered it as an option, I wanted to be sure the therapist knew the ins and outs of pregnancy. After reviewing the video on the website about the special prenatal cushions which allow you to LIE FACE DOWN (what a pleasure at 30 weeks!) I immediately booked a session. Janet, the owner, took away all my aches and pains and really focused on the areas I said were the most achy. The special cushions for laying facedown were a bit awkward to me at first but as the massage progressed I became more and more comfortable. I'll be booking weekly massages until delivery, and hope to go for post natal massages as well! Definitely be vocal about how much pressure you like, and what you want her to focus on. For my most recent session I asked her to focus on my right hip which had been extremely stiff and sore causing sleeplessness and immobility. After the massage that evening and the next day I felt so relaxed and was able to walk normally, which totally lifted my mood. read more

I had a prenatal massage with Janet this morning at 40+6 and it felt amazing. Due to the pandemic I haven't gotten massages at all during my pregnancy, but with only one week left before our scheduled induction (which we're really hoping to avoid) I'm desperate to try *anything* to get labor going. It's just five hours later and I haven't had any signs of anything happening yet, but I'll update this review if I end up going into labor sometime in the next 48 hours. Even if it doesn't end up stimulating labor for me, the massage felt so good and was really relaxing. It turns out that they do house calls too, so I imagine I'll take advantage of those postpartum! I had been having some ongoing pain, and the way Janet's pillows make you feel weightless relieved all pressure and pain for a beautiful hour and a half...and that was before the massage even started. Janet includes the perfect combination of relaxation and intense pressure, and I felt revitalized and stress free after our session. Her strength is perfect for those intense pregnancy muscular strains, her set up is comfortable and accommodating of baby bump and breasts, and her energy is soothing and assertive. I have very good friends who treated me, in my 37th month of pregnancy, to a prenatal massage by Janet. Massage for pregnant chicks is not so easy. But you need it. Your back hurts, your feet hurts, your neck hurts. Being a bit of a frugalista, I tried to go to one of those cheap Chinese massage places and they accommodated me by putting me on my side for the massage. That's no good. You end up compressing one side while the other is worked, leaving you feeling as bad when you leave and when you had arrived. Plus, as you pregnant ladies know, even laying on your side on a hard table without a bunch of strategically placed pillows is uncomfortable. Given that prenatal massage is one of Janet's specialities, she has the right beds for the job. With a fascinating assortment of bolsters and wedges, you are able to lay comfortably - even in the 9th month - on your tummy! I tell you - that alone was worth half the price of admission for me. It was an incredible relief to my back to just relax in that position (there's even a special pillow with two huge holes in it for your over-sized DD milk-factories!!!) Once your properly positioned, Janet gets to work with a firm, intuitive massage. She's not one of those super hippy-trippy types of massage therapists that speaks in hushed tones, smells of patchouli, and grew up on a commune. Janet has a very efficient, businesslike demeanor. I admit, that threw me off at first (sometimes I like being in the presence of those soothing stereotypical healer types) but once Janet got to work on my aching back, I was completely at ease and happy as a clam. I left totally blissed out. The joys of a knot-free back practically had me skipping all the way home. Money well spent (by my friends!). read more

Massages with Janet have made pregnancy way better. I told her my hips hurt and that I like elbows and she did NOT disappoint. I think maybe I even bruised a little? My tush was a bit tender for a few days! But I didn't tell her to let up because it hurt so good. She is also really easy to talk to and I gathered tons of pregnancy/motherhood advice from her as she rubbed my knots out. Janet has a TON of resources and knowledge related to being pregnant in NYC. She recommended a chiropractor and a babywearing class - both things I needed! I had two massages so far with Janet. She also offers a session with your birth partner to show you both accupressure points (to get labor going) and labor massage. That sounds very useful! I went to a Pregnant New Yorker event organized by Janet. That was great. There were SO many speakers packed into the 3 hour event and tons of prizes handed out. They also had some snacks and she made sure all the ladies stayed hydrated. I found out about green cleaning products, types of paint to use (if we were to paint the baby's room), nutrition tips, physical therapy resources and tons of other things. At almost 36w pregnant, the gift of prenatal massage is better than diamonds! My parents gave me a gift certificate to Maternal Massage, and luckily my appointment came one day after my husband found me stuck on my back like a turtle, unable to change sides due to my insane hip and back pain. Thank you so much to Erin, who is an outstanding therapist. She listened very carefully to my list of ailments and took care to pay them special attention. She did a great job making sure I was physically comfortable, which pretty much doesn't exist in late stages of pregnancy. I think it's worth it to visit a dedicated prenatal therapist with the proper equipment - the pillows and pads allowing me to be on my stomach were far superior to a flex table or a side massage. One complaint - I did have an issue with the location. The elevator in the building was broken, and the treatment room shares a wall with the extremely noisy and active stairwell. It literally sounded like there was an exercise class going on over my head during the entire massage. They made a valiant effort to create a relaxing environment with water features, sound therapy, etc, but if you're like me and have a difficult time tuning out your surroundings like I do, it's worth waiting until the elevator is back in service. read more

During a fabulous prenatal massage at 36 weeks, Janet mentioned she also gave a private massage techniques class to couples who wanted to explore unmedicated pain relief options during child birth. I hadn't realized it before then, but this is exactly the type of class that my husband and I had been missing. Though we had taken a birthing class, and have a wonderful doula lined up, we were still feeling anxious about how prepared we were for remembering all the different types of massage, the strokes the pressure points, etc. that would help us get through a first time labor. We had been shown techniques, but had never really been *taught* them-- or been able to practice them with a coach. Janet took us through the best positions to receive massage, stroking techniques- how to apply more pressure with minimal exertion, and critical pressure points. It wasn't simply a demonstration, but it was a real private lesson that left us feeling very empowered and much more assured. I am so very thankful we had this time with Janet-- for the price of a massage, my husband and I came away with so much more confidence in our abilities, our resolve and our teamwork. Two stars not for the massages, but for the "policy" this place has - which all of you moms, mom to-be, New Yorkers should be well aware of. I've had two pre-natal massages here first with Maria and second with someone else. I was very impressed with Maria so once I had the baby I was so excited to get the post-natal massage with her. She's only available on a Sunday that works out for me so I booked an hour with Janet via text. If you are breastfeeding, you know your one or two months old baby feeding schedule is so unpredictable so I was running a few late to get out of the apartment to get on the train only to find out the uptown 6 train is running express so I had to go all the way up to midtown and take local to soho. While I was on the train and had reception, I tried calling the number on yelp, no one picked up...I also texted Janet that I was running late, she responded "maria is waiting for you, hope to see you soon" so I apologized being late. I ended up being half hour late and felt very very sorry and said it many times to maria. She was able to situate me right away. The massage was good, when she was done I felt short and saw the clock and realized I only had half hour! I then asked maria, she said there's another client after me(which I understand she can't make others wait, though there's no one in the waiting area) but I was charged FULL amount of $150 for HALF HOUR! I respect her time so I paid and left uneasy. Maria said, I thought Janet let you know, but nope... when we were texting each other, she didn't mention. I was bothered, so I texted her back... she said it was on the form I signed! For pregnant women and moms, honestly that's the least thing you would remember on a form right? That's not a good response...Wouldn't it make sense for the owner to let you know especially you were keeping her posted that you will be late via text? I explained to her while I was being considerate to let them know my situation, there's nothing she can do since that is the policy! So for preggo and moms - the massages there are good (though pricy) I even recommended to my friends. Now I will have to let them know to be there right on time since there's no flexibility at all with them. You will be charged full amount if you are late and your session will be cut short, and it's hard to get a hold of the place. I unfortunately will not consider to go back after dealing with this (no accommodation and little communication). Good luck with y'all! read more

Treated myself to a 34week massage to relax but never achieved that. There was heavy drilling going on for more than 70% of my 1 hour massage. The massage was good but the noise was stressful and I was disappointedly therapist made no effort to address the issue (moving from my street facing room to another area of the premises?). I brought up the drilling noise at least twice. Apparently the drilling has been an ongoing issue yet I was never warned when I was making my appt. And why would I be put in a street facing room? My friends gifted me a prenatal massage at my baby shower, which was awesome as I was experiencing a lot of back pain in my 3rd trimester. It's a small shop, owned by the masseuse, Janet. She's a cheerful, surprisingly young woman. Loved all the pillows that allowed me to lie down "on my stomach" for the first time in months. That alone allowed my back to open up and provided almost immediate relief. The rooms aren't fancy or spa-like, but clean and professional. I just had a maternal (pregnancy) massage with Janet. I have had MANY massages and found that Janet, with her 20+ years of experience, was the BEST massage I have ever had. Maternal or Traditional Massage, Janet really knows the body and how to respond to it. Her technique is amazing and she truly is passionate about her work. WOW!!!! is all I can say. Yesterday I had my first prenatal massage at 38.5 weeks pregnant. I don't have any prenatal massages to compare this to but I can't imagine anything could be much better. My therapist was Mika and she was not only super sweet but really really good. The office is right across the street from the Spring St subway station which is super convenient when your prego. The space itself is a little strange..it seems that Maternal Massage shares space with some other business i.e. acupuncture, sports therapy, etc. If you are calling to make an appt, leave a message and they will get back to you. The first couple times I called I didn't leave a message, thinking I'd call back when the receptionist was back, but going there, I realized they don't have a typical spa type space so there really is no receptionist. The owner, Janet, calls you back very promptly though and is very accomodating. The room I was in was very lovely with beautiful music playing and very serene and peaceful but the walls are thin so you can hear people walking around and talking outside. It didn't bother me in the least but may bother others. The massage itself was one of the best massages I've ever had, and I've had my share of massages, though not pre-natal. I picked this place after doing research because they use these special pillows (in the pictures) that it didn't seem like anyone else in NYC used. Those pillows are a godsend!! For the first 20 min of the massage, I was laying on my stomach and literally forgot I was pregnant (except for when the baby got hiccups :) ). It was the first time in 6 months that I could comfortably lay on my stomach. Simply amazing. I can't even begin to explain how awesome the pillows are. Then Mika rearranged the pillows and had me lay on my side to do my legs and arms and then the other side. She ended with having me propped up on a wedge shaped pillow so she could massage my feet. Also, Mika was not afraid at all of using pressure. I read in reviews of other places that the therapists are scared to be too rough because of the baby, but Mika was completely comfortable and knew what she was doing. I am so happy that I found this place late in my pregnancy because the massage is a bit expensive- $145 for an hour, after tip you're getting near $200! I think they sell packages that make the massages a bit cheaper. No matter what, it was TOTALLY worth it!! I actually might go back next week! :) read more

Janet is lovely, flexible, easy to work with and extremely knowledgeable in all areas of her services. The prenatal massages were heaven and I went to the last prenatal massage I had hoping it would help get my labor started. It could have been coincidental since I was 40 weeks, but she did some pressure point massage and I went into labor the next day! I enjoyed her so much that I asked her to make a house call for lactation advise once my little bundle was born. My baby was latching just fine but I was having a lot of back pain. She taught me how to use pillows and swaddle blankets as props in ways that relieved the pressure I had been putting on my back and I haven't had back pain since. She also followed up with me off and on for a couple weeks after to see how things were going and she wrote up a sheet with helpful tips and links that she had mentioned during the consultation. I started seeing Janet halfway through my 1st trimester. I'm now at the beginning of my 3rd trimester. I had a sciatic nerve issue that had been caused/exacerbated by work with a physical therapist. I was in a lot of pain and hoped that seeing Janet might alleviate some of it. Finding Janet has been like finding a gem in the strange wonderful world of being pregnant. She effectively alleviated most of my pain in two sessions. But I've continued seeing her and do so as often as I can. I literally look forward to massages with her like a little piece of heaven. I had a prenatal massage today with Erin in Soho and it was terrific! I am 31 weeks and I had one previous prenatal massage at Massage Envy in Jersey City. This massage was SO much better because the side-lying thing they have you do at Massage Envy left me more crunched up and uncomfortable than when I came in. Maternal Massage has the body cushion that allows you lie face down and then the cushions get rearranged so you can be totally supported in a face up position too. They should think about just renting the room for pregnant lady naps because the cushions are SO COMFORTABLE. Erin was great, she concentrated on the exact spot I requested but also managed to give me a firm full body massage that left me feeling great. read more

This is by far the best prenatal massage I have had! Mika was amazing! I am in my third trimester and my back & hips have been bothering me, so I decided to try this place based on a recommendation from my dr.'s office. The techniques Mika used were great. I have never been so comfortable & relaxed during a prenatal massage. They use a system called the bodyCushion, which are individual wedges. I really liked these, because it allows you to lie safely & comfortably on your belly. Also, for part of the massage the cushions were adjusted, so I was able to lie on each side. This allowed Mika to work on my hips & legs. I have had several prenatal massages at other places & left feeling like I wasted my time & money. I left here feeling absolutely wonderful & refreshed! I wish I tried this place sooner, but will def be coming here for the rest of my pregnancy! read more

Thank God my husband found Janet. She is a legit physiotherapist so the long term results truly take effect a day or two afterwards and last you for a while. Which is really what I was hoping to find in a prenatal massage. Like many other reviews say, it feels like paradise to be able to lay on your front thanks to the setup of special pillows. It is a small practice, nothing fancy but definitely oriented towards relaxation and well being. It is my only real investment for myself during my pregnancy and every penny has been worth it. My visit was based on good reviews and I wanted to try the cushions that not every spa has. Even Great Jones don't have the maternal cushions and you have to lie on your side. Who wants that? The point of a massage is to feel as if you could lie on your belly and your back like your normal pre-pregnancy self and this place offers just that - no fancy frills but a clean and low-key spa just enough to relax. I was lucky to get the owner, Janet, for my first time. I loved it so much that I scheduled one just 1.5 weeks after but this time with a lady named Shera whom I've also read good reviews about. I'm so excited for my next massage - I'll be 39 weeks by then! And it's just next to the 6 train stop! How convenient for a waddling mom-to-be! You must try this place! read more

I came to this place at about 28 weeks and Molly was my masseuse. I really liked how I can face down with the cushions and she was able to work on my shoulder and back - what a relief. The second position was face up but on a large wedge with my legs lifted, which also felt great. The massage overall was so heavenly that I booked another appointment the next day. This one star rating is for this salon's lack of professionalism only, as I didn't even get to experience a massage here. I showed up for my appointment 15 minutes early, expecting to have to fill out paperwork since I would've been a new client. No one was there to greet me, no receptionist, not a single staff member in the waiting/office area. Ten minutes into what should have been my massage time, finally I grab 2 staff members coming out of the rooms and ask about my appointment. One texts my masseuse and later a second staff member calls her. Apparently my masseuse, Shera, had a "train problem," was in a cab and wouldn't be there for another half hour. Really? Where does she live that a cab ride takes in excess of 30 minutes? At that point I had been in the office for 45 minutes, so I told them I couldn't wait and left. The owner, Janet, calls me 10 minutes later apologizing, saying this never happens and would I like to book another appointment? No compensation was offered for my hassles and loss of an afternoon, which is how a true professional would have handled this situation. So NO, I would not like to book another appointment. Keep in mind that I'm 6 months pregnant with horrible back pains, hence the reason for my needing a massage-- I cannot be schlepping around all over town wasting my time for this. This massage is not a cheap one, and for the price of $140 I absolutely expect a certain level of service, which was painfully lacking here. Unbelievably disappointing. read more

I'm sorry to say that I did not have a good experience at all. I had Maria as my therapist and though she seemed like a nice enough woman, the entire experience was really disappointing and underwhelming, especially after all the great reviews I read on yelp. The location was not very impressive. The elevator was broken (this must be a common occurrence as I read this was the case in another review) and the actual facility itself was adequate but nothing impressive or spa-like. All this could have been overlooked if the massage was exceptional, but it was very mediocre. It was basically a generic full body massage with no particular care or attention given to the areas of my body that were actually aching. Also, she used A LOT of oil. I had forgotten to bring a hair tie and not only did she not offer a hair tie or clip (which most places are able to do), but she didn't even attempt to brush the hair aside, instead smearing the oil all over my hair. Also, there was not even an offer of a hot towel afterwards to wipe away the oil, which they have in even nail salons and Chinatown massage parlors. As this is not a real spa, there were no showers available, only a shared building public toilet far away down the hall. For $149 for an hour, I would expect much better than this. I felt no more relaxed, disgustingly oily, and frankly ripped off by the time I left. read more
