I should've left this five star review over a year ago when she did my hair, but I am leaving it now because she deserves so much credit. I'm a natural auburn redhead and so I appreciated her. Still keeping my natural color but adding some blonde to it. That is not an easy task. KRESA is amazing at what she does. She made me feel so good after my appointment. To this day, I have not found anyone that can cut and color my hair like her. It's funny because when I first went to the salon in Ventura, it was because I was housesitting for my parents and since I live in a small mountain town I rarely get my hair done and I thought while I was there, I could do it. Little did I know that I knew Kresa from Bakersfield. I used to get my hair done at her salon that she owned, but didn't have the pleasure of getting my hair done by her. Very cute and quaint salon at the heart of downtown Ventura near and at the same alley as Palm and Boy Coffee. Loved the friendly welcome from everyone as I walked into this lively salon. The wait was only 2 minutes until Aura warmly greeted me. All was a pleasant and amazing experience from the initial pixie hair consult, to washing hair, cutting, and styling. I was very happy with my stylish pixie cut. The hype is real. Aura is brilliant at what she does. Enjoyed the holiday decor of xmas trees, knomes, and more here. Above all, appreciated the zen and relaxing view at the 2nd floor outdoor patio with lots of green succulents and vines near where my hair was washed. I feel like I'm going to get flack for this but after having such great experiences elsewhere I really feel like I need to come back to this. I know you can't judge an entire salon based on just a few hair stylists, but I definitely had a bad experience when I went. My stylist was extremely rude. I tried to tell myself it wasn't a big deal but honestly it still bothers me! It made me so uncomfortable. To top it off, my husband actually went here, saw a different stylist, and felt really uncomfortable with her too. He said he felt like she was trying to come onto him based on the conversation they were having. So take that for what you will. It could be absolutely nothing, but deserves to be called out because It feels a bit toxic to me. I'm sure there are some great people who do a good job but I can confidently say our experience was extremely unpleasant and I have every reason to think so. Sorry. read more

I blew into town with a terrible self hair cut. I was on vacation headed to my dad's 80th bday and had no idea where to go for a fix. My friend recommended Matiz Salon. Though it was Saturday, I took a chance there would be a cancellation. To my amazement, the head stylist Jamie had a cancellation. Jamie spent good time asking what I wanted. They examined my damage and announced they "could work with it" I felt immediate relief. If you want a chatty Cathy, Jamie is not your person. They are totally focused on the job at hand. My hair has not been treated so gently EVER. It was not pulled or blown to the point of burning my ears. I highly recommend Jamie for a hair cut and style. read more

Had my very curly hair cut by Jaime. He was very certain of what he needed to do to give me a low maintenance, layered ear lobe length cut. I really like it. A lot and he's a lovely guy. Spent an exorbitant amount of time researching every single salon in town to get my hair cut for the first time in 7 years. I wasn't looking for color or anything particularly exciting, but I've had traumatic salon experiences in the past so I wanted to feel secure. I tried calling about half an hour after they opened, but couldn't get a hold of anyone. Tried back later in the afternoon and they picked up on the second ring. I explained what I was looking for, was asked if I had a specific stylist in mind (I didn't), and due to a cancellation, was able to get an appointment with Bridget the following Tuesday (called on Wednesday). The salon itself is ADORABLE. There really isn't a reception area so to speak, but they do have a bench outside the front door available. My wait was less than 5 minutes before Bridget came to bring me back to the chair. First of all, she is SO NICE. She didn't scold me for neglecting my hair for so many years, and was very professional and warm. She listened to what I was looking for and really followed through. I'm not the best at small talk as I'm very socially anxious, but we had a great conversation that ranged from dogs to travel. I have a lot of thick hair, and I was shocked at how efficient she was. I did end up losing a bit more length than I had originally anticipated, but I specifically requested for her to cut off all the dead ends and make it look healthy again, which she did. I basically had a wall of hair and now it has movement and life again. I felt beautiful walking out. read more

My husband and I got married this past week and the day before the wedding, he really wanted to get his hair cleaned up. A little back story, we've been together for over 6 years and I have never witnessed him get a haircut that he was happy about so needless to say, I was a bit nervous for him. On a whim, we booked an appointment with Greg: a man we saw cutting hair in the window of a rather charming hair salon. Fast forward to the day of the appointment, my husband could not be happier. Greg understood exactly what he wanted and executed perfectly! He was very friendly and by no means "salesman-y" when asked about products. Unbelievable! I try to dye my hair here since I've never tried here before. The employee picked up the phone told me there are 2 appointments to have my hair done. 1st one to estimate how much cost my hair and how long it take to get the 2nd appointment for me to be done. I understand the process. But for the 1st appointment just to let the stylist estimate my hair which i believe that takes her just 5 mins, and I told her I accept to stay at outside the salon, so I will not touch anything in the store to let them clean. Then they can be flexible to give me 5 mins appointment only, then I can have the 1st appointment in same day to have 2nd appointment may be next 2wks. But she said NO. Next 2 wks for the first appointment which just takes 5mins. That means 2nd appointment might be another 2wks. Crazy idea. Do not know how good they are, I ll never try this place. read more

This is long over due. Aura you are seriously amazing! My husband and I move every couple of years. This becomes very traumatic for me because I have blonde highlights and I am very particular about it looking natural. A great hairstylist/colorist is like a significant other, sometimes you find a keeper and cannot dream of breaking up with them. With that said I have lived in 10 different states and 3 countries so I have seen A LOT of salons. Matiz Salon is quaint yet professional. They offer you a beverage prior to your service and actively listen to what your wants/needs are. Most importantly Aura tells you what is realistic. Just because you see something on Pinterest doesn't mean that is going to work on YOUR hair. So you always walk out feeling confident and happy. I went to Matiz salon 8 months pregnant with hair that had been DESTROYED by another salon (I had been going to the other one for over a year) won't say names but rhymes with foxy ha-ha. I can laugh about it now but I left there in ugly tears after asking to gradually transition from my brunette back to blonde for my maternity photo shoot the following week. I am so lucky that I found Matiz and especially Aura. She did corrective color/ highlights and didn't burn my hair off. I was flexible and open to ideas on how to fix it which including cutting my hair a bit shorter but it came out lovely. I stumbled up Matiz Salon when I was waiting for my butter açaí bowl at Stoked. It is located right across from it in the same plaza so I instantly checked out the reviews on Yelp & their website. I needed a trim, color, & style so I was able to book an appointment for the following week. Shout out to Elaine! Such a sweet stylist. Unfortunately she was unable to color my hair how I wanted because I still have certain chemicals I straightened my hair with from abroad. With her honesty & asked another stylist, she had to break it to me that she can only cut my hair under her comfort zone. It was bittersweet because I was looking for a new hair style/color, but I chose her honesty over taking my $$, which I appreciated! $45+ for relayering, cut, wash, & blow dry I still would recommend this salon considering they have a lot of professional stylists & the service was very welcoming (they serve you drinks while you're waiting). I've been a loyal customer for over 2 years now and have referred my husband and friends to Chelsea and Matiz Salon for these reasons: the shop staff are always so pleasant and welcoming, they are prompt with appointments, and the stylists are talented and great at what they do. The shop is clean and who can turn down coffee, water, beer and wine while you wait or are styled? Chelsea has a magical way of taking your reference photos or listen to what you want and deliver something greater. When I came back for my appointment the salon was very busy, but the nice woman at the front desk immediately checked me in and offered me a complimentary beverage (water, coffee, tea, WINE, CHAMPAGNE, or MIMOSA). I thought it was so fun they offered wine! Not to mention the atmosphere of the salon is so cute, antique-chic, but honestly kind of homey which I loved. Sally Melvin is my stylist. She is fantastic with color!! She also styles my hair so I leave feeling beautiful each time. She gives THE MOST AMAZING head massages when she washes my hair. Sally never keeps me waiting for my appointment. She is friendly, kind, and down to earth. I highly recommend Sally at Matiz salon. The salon itself is super cool! I had my hair cut and colored by Jamie and recommended him to my adult daughter based on the good job he had done with my hair back in late August 2018. In early November 2018 after an appointment with Jamie, my daughter (who has long, thick hair) came home with a straight-across chop cut that was uneven - not even close to something a 20-something with gorgeous hair would want. No consideration of how thick it was and how it needed layering - it looks really bad and my daughter was super upset. So because of inconsistencies in Jamie's abilities, I cannot recommend him. Matiz will be my permanent hair salon as of now. Let me start off by saying found this salon on Yelp, noticed the incredible and numerous reviews, so I drove 40 minutes from UCSB and check it out. My hairdresser was Aura! I loved her! She is so honest, sweet and looks out for your hair. I went with a brassy bleach blonde hair with out grown BLACK roots. I wanted to do a root touch up and go less bleach blonde. She informed me that color corrections take multiple steps and time was an issue ( I didn't know so I didn't say it when I made my appt). She spent 30 minutes trying to figure out what to do with my hair because I was very depressed and my graduation was coming up and she didn't want to damage my hair. Finally we came to some solution. I DON'T KNOW HOW AURA DID IT, BUT SHE DID IT! I must have gotten 8539302 compliments on my hair color! This color she gave me is the blonde I always envisioned I'd be. My risk paid off. Aura's the best! She gives great hair washes! She's nice funny, and recommend the most amazing leave in conditioner. To top it off the day of my appt, my school, UCSB was struck by a mass shooting killing 7 students. Aura texted me sending me positive energy and kind words.! I moved to Ventura a little over two years ago but had still been driving over an hour to my previous hair stylist because I was too nervous to find someone new. I finally decided to be brave and made an appointment at Matiz. The lady who I was originally scheduled with (not Cindy) got sick and I was so disappointed when the called and canceled my appointment, but Cindy volunteered to stay late after the salon had closed and did a beautiful balayage and cut.
