I love visiting Matoska Trading Company in Old Town Orange! Such a hidden gem. This place has such a unique and welcoming vibe. A one stop destination for gifts or to buy yourself something cool. One of the best things about this store is definitely their prices on crystals. They have some of the most reasonable prices I've seen anywhere. I was recently in Sedona where prices were double to triple the price. Whether you're shopping for quartz, amethyst, or any other stones, you get great quality without breaking the bank. Many are in different sizes, shapes, etc. They also carry a really great selection of Sage and other smudging herbs. With speciality stores becoming increasingly rare, Matoska is a real delight. I typically stick to the antiques store side of Old Towne Orange, but wandered the direction of the boutiques during my most recent visit. Toward the front of the store, you'll find ready made textiles, sage bundles, and crystals, but head to the back and more treasures await! From tiny 13/0 seed beads to larger pony beds, you will find supplies in all colors and materials. The vintage seed beads (11/0) are only $5 per bag and I wanted to walk home with every one of them! I was excited to see traditional bead looms - similar to the one I use for my own projects - available and at a comparable price to those you might find from online retailers (e.g. about $45 for the heavier duty wooden loom). The associate was cordial and kept busy with the many customers exploring the store. I highly recommend supporting Matoska and other supply stores like it; there's something magical about being able to see and touch the materials you'll be working with! read more

Searching for beads today Wednesday and my go-to's were closed. So I ended up in Matoska today and felt the Native spirits in the ambulance. Great selection of blankets Pendletons hats beads crystals and so much more. I got excellent service from both ladies behind the counter and Ju Ju was great very knowledgeable with bead crafting . I was very pleased with the customer service and reasonable pricing of goods. Walked out with hemp string and a necklace of assorted beads. I walked in here with my friend, thinking that we would just look at some crystals, but the store is just way more than that. It's a piece of history the owner Brent was so sweet and really took the time to show us around and enlightened us with a lot of cool facts about the history here in California.. would definitely recommend. Honestly had the worst experience here because of Chi. I was here earlier in the week, and had the pleasure of meeting a sweet young girl who was so positive and warm and welcoming. She showed me around and the amazing selection of all the items that Matoska had to offer and even showed me upstairs to some of the historical relics here. So my wife and I arrived to the street fair early this evening and I was so stoked to show her to Matoska so she could see the wide selection of Pendleton blankets and more here at the store. We walked in, it was dead quiet, he was on his phone the whole time and didn't offer to help us at all. I tried my best to help my lady understand how fun and uplifting it was on my previous visit, but it was still so lackluster due to this employees attitude and negative energy. Most people who enter stores like these are empathetic, and we regularly feel people's energy and this man's energy was all bad. I left and wandered around to grab lunch but because I wanted to grab some items on the way home, we stopped by again and I was reminded again of this man's poor attitude, so I asked him why the silent store vibes, and why the lack of music. He stated it was his prerogative and after having to shut the store down at 2pm for no sales yesterday, this was the reason he was broadcasting such negative energy to my wife (and other guests) who were at the store today. I thought that was a very poor excuse - so I'm writing this review. Chi shouldn't be allowed to work up at the front of the store anymore, he should be in the back where the attitude of his day doesn't ruin people's experience who were previously bragging about an experience they had prior. 5 star store, with a negative energy vampire working the front, equals a 2 star experience in my book. read more

What a cool store in Orange! At Matoska they sell American Native merchandise and they have the best selection I have seen in California. The store is big, nicely decorated and it is fun to browse. They have a bit of everything: books, coasters, jewelry, crystals, dried herbs, rugs, clothes to more funky items: turtle shells, rabbit fur and so on. My boyfriend took me into this small shop at the orange circle. Let me tell you, I thought it was a cute store, until I found all the otter stuff. At that point I fell in love ! I love otters. I found this hidden gem back in 2017 when I would coffee shop study at Contra around the corner. This has been my only go to place to get crystals and sage. The atmosphere is super chill. All the crystals sage and dream catchers you can think of. There's a lot of items around Native American culture and history. This is really worth to go in and walk around and learn some things (even if you're not into crystals and things). This is my only spot to get crystals. They are quite literally never open on the hours they say they are open. I'm not from the city but I visit to go see family every other week. I've been inside the store twice they have great stuff BUT they are never open. If you wanna waste gas driving here just for them to claim to be open and not be...be my guest. I drive from out of town 40mins to buy a gift for a family member there and it says it's open online from 11am-6pm and I got there at 3pm tell me why they were not open at all?? This is not the first time this has happened either. I was NOT surprised the workers were no where to be seen. I should not be feeling surprised a business is closed!! you would think them being in a busy street with lots of foot traffic they would be open when they claim to be. I'm really trying not to judge but when you walk past the store it looks like one of the Native American stores in the mall that have dream catchers and wolves on tees. The sage and spices caught my eye and I am every thankful that my sweets suggested we go in. The quality and selection of their glass beads rival those of Michael Levine in LA. The strands vary in pricing but the basic run a little under $3; enough to make a decent necklace with multiple strands. There is also leather laces to make necklaces and what not at a dollar something, Pendleton blankets, feathers & furs. $7 bars of soap that smell heavenly; perfumey to musky to manly...we picked up one with Sam Adams in it. :) read more
