Me and my GF decided to try this spot out. We ordered some udon, chicken katsu, and a bento box. The soup tasted like water and broth lacked any flavor. The chicken katsu had no flavor and tasted like old oil. The California roll was worse than the quality you'd get at a cheap super market. The only decent item was the sashimi. 3.5 stars. Service was friendly and the food came out fast (though it was before the dinner rush so there wasn't too many people inside). I honestly don't remember what roll I ordered.. not even the ingredients. Thanks to the Yelpers that posted the menu, but I still can't remember.. Which leads me to think that it was so-so. Not bad, but not memorable.. What I do remember is my sister's and her friend's order of tempura veggies and shrimp, and teriyaki chicken. I tried some of the tempura, and it was fried well and not too greasy. Her friend enjoyed the chicken. We also ordered garlic edamame and inari. The inari had a good soy bean-to-rice ratio. And the garlic edamame is delicious! It's a must-have appetizer. The restaurant is small, though it seems turnaround is quick. There's only two sushi places on the south side of Tracy, so Matsuyama can gain a large clientele. I would like to come back with my family and order some rolls and entrees. read more

Only 2 minutes away from home, can it get any better :) I always order Tempura Rolls since I'm a huge fan of shrimp. My entrée was beyond delicious. It was wasn't chewy, the shrimp was fried perfectly, and the sauces added so much flavor. Yum! My boyfriend had their Chicken Teriyaki. It comes with a side of soup and rice. He likes to drench his chicken with sauce so for him he felt it was a bit on the dry side. Not to worry, he asked for a side of BBQ sauce and he ended up enjoying his meal. Let's talk about the soup because I was very pleased. I'm not a huge soup person and I usually steer far from that entire category. Wow! Let's just say I loved it so much I had seconds. Came here for Mothers Day and had a slight better experience. Service is pretty good here although our teriyaki was slight overcooked and tough. On the whole the lower priced sushi rolls are still fairly underwhelming. I did like the lion king roll and the super caterpillar rolls and those offered the best taste for the price. Matsuyama is the best and most consistent sushi spot that I have found in Tracy. My favorite, by far, is their Tuna Poki. I have had it 4-5 times now and it is always very fresh, seasoned just right, with excellent presentation. It has become my go-to. The Crunchy Jalapeño and Discovery Bay rolls are very good as well. I have not had a bad experience with any of their sushi. The miso soup, on the other hand, is another story. Though a simple soup that is usually pretty consistent across most restaurants, Matsuyama's is very rich and salty - a combination that I just don't like. The staff is very nice, energetic, and the service is always attentive and fast, making this one of my preferred lunch spots in Tracy. Matsuyama isn't yet as popular as some of the other sushi places in town, and you may have the restaurant to yourself (even at lunch time). read more

Was looking for a new sushi place to be my regular and tried it out. Usually, I go to Mikasa but lately they have started to go down hill. Higher prices, smaller less consistent rolls, and worse service. Went here and think it may be our new go to. Matsuyama's miso soup is Amazing. So good, so much flavor. Was surprised to be so impressed by something that's not usually given much thought. I would probably go back just for the miso soup alone, even if the sushi sucked, but it didnt. The sushi was good too. We ordered like 5 rolls and shared as a table and there wasnt a roll that I did not like. The kids were happy, we were happy, and service was good. I wouldnt say the sushi was as good as Mikasa used to be, before they started getting worse and worse, but it was still good. Better than other sushi places in town. Would recommend. read more

Restaurant is small but very clean - especially the restrooms! (That's always a plus). We came around 4 and there wasn't too many people so we were seated right away. Good service and food was great! I like how their business hours doesn't close like most Japanese restaurants from 2-4pm. They are open from 11-9pm. We ordered the Quail Lake roll and Red Rose roll. So so yummy! Their menu ranges anywhere from simple to sophisticated rolls. I'm surprised with how good this place was! I use to go to Mikasa but it looks like I'll be coming here! read more

I ordered take out the other night. First time trying this place. Rolls were fresh and delicious. I had a few different special rolls and they were very good. I just wish they were a little bigger. Miso soup was a little sad and watered down. No nori in it which is disappointing for me. It just needed more flavor. Will still return for the rolls for sure. read more

I ordered Matsumoto sushi with Door Dash, which I guess is the same as Matsuyama. I ordered a large Dragon Roll and Gyoza. The roll was horrible. It was not made fresh, and it was very plain (it was filled with just a tempura shrimp and some cucumber, so I think some ingredients were missing) with some teriyaki sauce just globbed on it. The gyoza were stone cold, and tasted like they were just boiled in some water. Just those 2 items cost 42.00 before tip. Horribly disappointing! To top it all off, there were no soy sauce packets or chopsticks included with my order. Will not be ordering from this restaurant again. What a waste of money. read more

I went here last night for the first time, I'll definitely be back. Everything was delicious. A lot of places drown there rolls in sauce... this place does not, which says a lot about the quality of their sushi... we ordered the lion roll, crispy scallops roll, spicy tekka roll, and the red rose. We got here at 5 tonight (Saturday) and by the time we left the new little restaurant was hoppin with 2 parties waiting to be seated and another 2 waiting for takeout orders. I had the soft shelled crab, spicy tuna hand roll and Hawaii roll and I liked them all, except would have liked the spicy tuna to be a little more spicy. My wife had the chicken teri and CA roll bento (not served in a traditional bento box but rather in separate small dishes). She thought her meal was just average.. but that's what you get when you order chicken teri and a CA roll; not really my idea of a meal you can be wowed by. Out little guy had a smaller order of what we call Japanese chicken nuggets and rice aka chicken katsu. He gobbled his up. Another nice addition to the neighborhood. We'll be back. Btw.. This restaurant is my girlfriends and my favorite sushi spot in Tracy. Soooo Goood!! The menu is loaded for all sushi lovers and non sushi lovers and has enough selection to keep it new. We come at least once a month, our usual favorites are Vegetable Tempura, and Miso soup to start. Then Hawaii roll, Alaskan roll, Philadelphia roll, Red rose roll and Caterpillar roll. Our go to sushi spot in Tracy. Good food and good service. We've tried many different rolls and they're always delicious.

I came here on a Friday night with my boyfriend and we loved it. The rolls were on the smaller side, but the ratio of rice and fish were perfect. I personally am not a fan of chewing a huge piece of sushi for 3 minutes, so this sushi was perfect. Bite size sushi, that is still filling with excellent quality, is definitely my favorite. The pricing was completely reasonable for what you get. Our server provided great customer service. The edamame we ordered was well seasoned and they have options to add garlic for a small cost. This is definitely so far, our favorite sushi place and plan on coming back to choose something new from their large menu! read more

I have recently introduced my boyfriend to the wonderful world of sushi and this place was a disappointment before even getting to taste the food. First of their customer service is very weird. When we first walked in they had a few tables taken but many open seating but proceeded to try and make us sit at a table that was not even clean. It had food and dirty napkins all over it. It was very unappealing. We sat at a table near the window and the waitress came and took out drink orders, after we just asked for water she slams the paper where she would generally right our orders down and proceeds to walk away. Another man comes and takes our order and after my bf orders he basically tells him what he orders isn't good. (Weird that you talk down your own food). But the worst part comes after this. He brings us a small sauce dish with wasabi and ginger. We are still waiting for our food and my bf points out there is a bug just crawling around in our wasabi. We call him over and instead of saying sorry and removing the dish he proceeds to squish the bug right in front of us with his finger. So now we have a smushed bug in our wasabi, without waiting for an explanation we get up and walk out. I can't speak on the food but I will not be able to trust the quality and hygiene of the restaurant after witnessing the waiter kill a bug in front of his customers with no problem at all. read more

Decided to give this place a try because they had good ratings. It's a really, really tiny place. No changing station in the restrooms, so if you have an infant you'll have to go back to your car. We walked in, no one really greeted us so we stood at the door for a few minutes until someone said to sit anywhere. It looked like there was only three people working, including the person making the sushi. We sat and waited almost 10 minutes before anyone took our drink order. Once we placed our food order it was prepared pretty quickly. Everything looked great! But everything tastes exactly alike. We ordered three completely different rolls that tasted no different from the next. I did expect better for the price we paid. At least the food was fresh... We won't be coming back, not impressed. read more
