I had to make the heartbreaking decision to say good-bye to my little cat Deedles who was suffering from kidney issues. My previous vet suddenly closed her practice and this wasn't the ideal time to deal with a stranger but I contacted Dr. Nebel, who came to our house the same day. He was warm and compassionate and held my Deedles on his lap as he helped her transition from this world to the next one. She didn't suffer a bit, and the entire process just took a few minutes, and from the comfort of our own home. I will definitely have him take care of my other cat Antonio for regular check-ups. We have worked with Dr Nebel in the past when he was at a group practice. Our cat had good experience with him. Dr Nebel's demeanor and approach made it so our cat felt safe and comfortable. We requested a house-call with exam though our cat had recently been seen elsewhere a few months ago for a general check-up. That appointment with the other vet went well and bloodwork was all normal. However because we didn't witness that exam we were a bit paranoid about whether he was actually examined - so I guess this exam with Dr Nebel was for our peace of mind. We wanted a visit with a vet where we can see the exam. Dr Nebel asked us for proof of vaccination and his recent blood work from the other vet, which we sent him conveniently via email, before he came out. The visit with Dr Nebel went well, our cat was a bit moody (as is understandable) but he allowed the exam. Dr Nebel thought our cat is in great shape and said we are doing "the right things ". The cost for house-call and exam was $205, it would have been more if it was an emergency, sick pet visit, vaccines, bloodwork. Overall we prefer a vet who makes house calls, and who is calm and pleasant- which our cat also prefers. We would recommend Dr Nebel if these things are important to you. read more

I almost couldn't find his profile on Yelp because I've been spelling his name wrong. NeBel with a B! Yay! So my darling little kitty of 18 years' nails had grown so long they were digging into his pads pretty badly. Generally, I hold him down while my husband clips (because he is NOT cooperative) and we get the job done, but now I'm in the middle of a divorce soooOoO, there goes THAT. :/ Add in the fact that I have no car, and the majority of vets I called around for did not do walk-ins, or did not hold hours where I could get a ride! Meanwhile, I'm freaking out because I can see the claws were breaking the skin, and the little demon wouldn't let me get near them to even attempt to clip. I didn't want to try a groomer because I wasn't sure they'd be able to deal with him, so I searched around for some house call vets because I was reaching my wit's end and found Dr. Nebel! I said hey, here's the deal, he said hey, here's the price (cheaper than anyone else quoted!), I said hey, here's the time. He shows up; my cat is on guard like he knows what's about to go down. He didn't try to shame me for not consistently bringing my cat to the vet; he's an apartment cat who never goes outside and is fixed and healthy for the most part, and doesn't interact with any other animals. He didn't try to sell me anything extra or unnecessary or say he needs chest x-rays or feline viagra or immediate shots of XYZ-this-will-help-him-stay-alive-he-NEEDS-this vaccine. He gave him a physical which my cat was NOT happy about at all but Dr. Nebel was fearless! Then I wrapped him up in a blanket and held him down so the claws could get cut and he yowled like a banshee and I felt terrible but Dr. Nebel is pretty skilled and sliced through those talons quickly and expertly like it was nothing and my cat wasn't maniacally bucking the whole time. And then it was over! No one got scratched, no one got bit, and he became a little quiet angel again immediately after we let him go! Will definitely call Dr. Nebel again if I need him! Imagine if someone 10 times your size picked you up, put you in a carrier, took you outside where it was noisy and loud, on a train and to some place where you had no idea where you were, then you got poked, prodded and got shots--all against your will. Would you be happy? Probably not. Well, that's what I think it feels like to be a cat, visiting a vet's office in NYC. My cat decided that the cat carrier wasn't for her, luckily, my friend suggested a vet who makes house calls. Who knew such a thing existed! Problem solved! Dr. Nebel is nice and personable and did a thorough exam of my cat all within the comfort of my home. He didn't even mind the mild growling and hissing (from my cat, not me). I highly recommend him. He will make house calls in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Ask yourself: why make a cat (or dog) unnecessarily anxious and upset? Have the vet come to you instead. Dr. Nebel came up to Riverdale to examine Daisy the 18 1/2 year old cat even though that neighborhood wasn't listed on his website as part of his area. He stayed for an hour and a half, and gave my cat his undivided attention, far more time than I would ever be given at a storefront. Daisy the Cat has probably developed lymphoma. I say probably, because unlike many vets, Dr. Nebel didn't push testing for an exact diagnosis since Daisy's condition is terminal anyway. Daisy needs a subcutaneous IV. Dr. Nebel sent an Rx to a local pharmacy and mailed me the tubing and the needles, saving me a lot of hassle. All in all, Daisy is stable. The cat is eating again and put on a pound in just one week. She is bright-eyed, if a bit slow moving. That's the best I could hope for. I really liked working with Dr. Nebel and given the prognosis for my ailing 18 1/2 year old cat, I expect to be keeping in regular contact with him over the next year, and I would trust him to work with my feral, who is a true scaredy cat. read more

Their human companions were especially pleased to find a competent and caring vet who could come to the cats, rather than having to juggle them through the hassles and stresses of transportation in NYC. I've decided to write a follow up as Dr. Nebel recently reached out via email. This actually came as a surprise to me. On rare occasions, business owners have sent me an email, usually in a very snarky tone, asking me to remove a bad review. Dr. Nebel's email was far from that. It was professional, sincere, and apologetic. He acknowledged the issues mentioned in my review below and even offered to reimburse us for the extra expenses. I love my cats. I've had the joy of raising a few over the years and the sorrow of losing them to old age or illness. A few years ago I was treating my calico for an aggressive oral cancer that was terminal. The vet at forest hills cat hospital recommended Dr Nebel who did house calls and could put the cat to sleep. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR. Don't drag your sick old dying beloved cat out of their comfort zone. Let their last moments be spent at home. It was so convenient to have a vet come to our house to look at our poor cat's rotten tooth! Our cat was so much more comfortable being in his own environment, especially since he was already feeling bad. Can there be something less than one star?? no?? well yelp needs to add that. Horrible attitude. Aren't you supposed to be an animal lover if you're helping animals? He dismissed my friend's cat without much thought and gave her a diagnosis without any X-rays. My friend was there for less than 2 minutes and still had to shell out a "consultation" fee. After visiting another clinic, the cat was not only treated but we were informed Dr. Nebel didn't inform us of other options. The cat is now slowly feeling better. read more
