Horchata: So good, the horchata essence hit me as soon as I took a bite. Very cinnamony, very milky & creamy. 2. Passionfruit: I'm a sucker for anything passionfruit. The curd-like filling did not taste artificial at all. 3. Almond cardamom: Topped with a real almond, but more cardamom forward, reminded me of chai. 4. Hazelnut sassy monkey: Distinguished more coffee than banana, but it was there. Also liked the layer of crunch. 5. Raspberry lychee: The raspberry jam was strong and tasty, the floral essence from lychee was subtle. 6. Sesame matcha: Surprisingly citrusy? I did taste some bitterness from the matcha and appreciated the earthy sesame crust. 7. Ube: Sadly did not detect much ube flavor. 8. Earl grey lavender: Definitely the prettiest, but tasted like what I imagine soap would taste like. In terms of whether the chocolate is worth the price: I've never had this experience of trying such diverse and interesting chocolate flavors before so it was for me. Ambiance is nice, I think there was only outside seating. There's good parking nearby in the Brightleaf lots or on W Pettigrew St. Service was fast and friendly. 8/10 would recommend!

I'm embarrassed because i gifted a couple of the bags. Honestly not worth buying from this store. I really wanted to love our purchases.

Unfortunately, what began as a delightful stop in Hillsborough developed into a situation that made me feel very uncomfortable and unsafe as a customer. As I ate my purchase inside of the store, the owner Matt decided to have a conversation with me about politics sexuality and race. I, myself, am Black lgbtq and acquainted with the south. Unfortunately, Matt decided to discuss how he grew up in a racist home and began openly saying "nigger," in the store. Additionally, he questioned why a white gay man dressing up as a Black woman would be a problem. He called Black women, "bitches," by saying, "I love those bitchy Black women" and continually stated that he is, "...a Black woman on the inside." No person should be saying any of this and I was made to feel dehumanized and targeted by that commentary. No white person should be mentioning, "Nigger" to anyone. When Matt said, "Nigger. Nigger. Nigger." I was made to feel very uncomfortable after purchasing food from his store. Do not shop here. read more

I drove all the way from Raleigh just to visit this shop, after one of the daily emails highlighting local shops for hot cocoa. Downtown Hillsborough is quite cute, and Matthew's fits right in. I was a little surprised to see that they do not have any other milk options for their beverages. No soy, almond, or lactose free "milks" for lattes or cocoa. Even though that was a disappointment, the cocoa was not. The spicy cocoa with homemade marshmallows was amazing. I did not try the chocolates, however there was quite a large selection, and something for everyone's palate. I will be making another trip to taste my way through the shop. read more

First time I stopped in here was after surgery as a reward for going under the knife. I came in asking for a chocolate that was dark and salty, mostly hoping for chocolate covered pretzels. Instead I got something infinitely better, with almonds! (Though, after repeat visits, my favorite is the thai peanut dark chocolate.) When my best friend came into town from Kentucky I took her here for dessert, and now I have to figure out how to mail her chocolate from here. The name a little hard to catch, but it's a small greenish building immediately beside La Vaquita on Chapel Hill Road (with the giant cow on the roof). The outdoor area is quite nice, with a fenced outdoor area having swings and other seating/ space for families. We were greeted quite warmly when we arrived. They had maybe ~15 flavors of ice cream or similar (will return to that in a second) as well as other sweets like baklava. But this is not your ordinary ice cream shop-- the flavors were unusual. Cucumber, date, and others caught my eye, but I didn't try those. Unlike one Yelp reviewer's comment, when we went, there was both a regular pistachio as well as a vegan pistachio option. I got something different-- I tried the falooda... a Persian inspired ice-cream-like dish with rose syrup and small cooked noodles. The texture is slightly like an italian ice, but the flavor was great. However, there's more-- on a table off to the side, there were separate lemon and cherry flavors that we were invited to try adding to the falooda. Let me tell you-- either addition turned a good dish into a heavenly dish! Sooooo good. Try it, but only if you're open to "this isn't just ice cream". There were also some wafer cookies to the side we were invited to have with our respective dishes. Seating inside was stools at benches facing a thin window bar-- outside is nicer if you have a big group and/ or if weather is nice, but it was fine. I did stop by the restroom briefly, and it was clean, too. Overall, definitely plan to come back to this eastern-inspired ice cream shop, and I encourage others to give it a try too!

So come early to get the freshest goods. Must-have are "conchas" (sea-shell), which is a classic crumb-encrusted bun, one that has been adopted in Asia as the go-to morning bun. Bring a travel mug of your favorite coffee and then enjoy some great pan dulce in the decomposed rock parking lot by the side of the highway at dawn. Trust me. This is good living.
