Based on that, I drove to the store expecting a straightforward transaction. Instead, I waited an unusually long time before anyone helped me. When the owner finally came out, she quoted me nearly double the price I had been given over the phone. There was no clear explanation for the increase and no apology for the discrepancy. It felt like the original quote meant nothing. I chose not to argue. I paid for the repair and left because my time is more valuable than debating over a relatively small amount of money. This review is not about the extra dollars. It's about honesty, consistency, and trust. When you're dealing with jewelry, diamonds, and valuable personal items, integrity should be the foundation of the business. Once that trust is lost, it's very difficult to earn back. I will never return to this store, and I cannot recommend it based on my experience. If the owner reads this review, I hope she reflects on how this situation was handled. The issue wasn't the price--it was the lack of transparency and the feeling that the agreement changed only after I was standing in the store. In 1995 I spent over $50 grand in cash for rwo rings from Michael B collection as he was noted as the platinum designer of the year" And my appraisal for my engagement ring from Aida was appraised at $44,000 and it is worth $15,009. The rest of the collection also greatly overpriced. My trust was totally due ignorance and I was young. But what is so frustrating is Aida telling me the value would only increase & they would buy it back. LIES- a cheap diamond 2.5 carot stone with a diamond band in Platinum. I guess I believe they were good honest and forthcoming but they lied about quality of diamond. Such a shame and now that Michael B has passed - you would think Aida the widow would want to keep part of her husband's prized work. As she was glowing when mentioning "she would always buy the collection from me. Aida completely betrayed my trust. I was young but truly believed their words as truth. I am so sick to my stomach, thanks Aida. I think Michael would honor his word. read more

Needed an engagement ring sized down (a little too big). Called this place to see if they could do it same-day, it's a thinner gold band so it wouldn't be too difficult. When I called, the owner said they might be able to do it same-day, just come in so they can take a look. Came in 3 minutes after the call. When I walked in, she got up and I showed her how loose the ring was. She said she would size me but didn't, just took my ring down to the repair guy in the back. They didn't size my finger at all, I am not sure if that is normal for this kind of adjustment. *She did not tell me how much the cost of repairs would be until I asked.* luckily, this is not too much, when I asked she said $35-40 since it's not a lot of gold. I wish she was a little more straightforward about the price and the sizing. But otherwise the guy who did the sizing did a good job and they did it quickly on the same day. read more

This was my first experience at Matthew's. And it was wonderful! I was weary about going into a jewelry shop, especially one on Ventura... but I was pleasantly surprised by the owner and staff! She was more than helpful and so sweet. I needed something very very simple, but needed it in just a couple of days... with engraving. I thought it was a long shot because I had already asked a few other shops and all of them said it was impossible. BUT, Matthew's said it could be done and promised it to be done right! My experience in a nutshell? I was gaslit. I contemplated writing this review for a while, and don't usually write any but didn't want this to happen to anyone else. I'll start with the positives. Most of the pieces I had made were nice quality and the style I wanted, however it was overpriced and there was zero communication, so when I was slapped with a bill of 5K, you can imagine my shock. I brought in some old jewelry to melt and spoke with a lovely woman named Angela, who referred me to the owner who designs pieces. I spoke with the owner about several pieces I wanted made and she told me she would make as many as she could with the gold I provided. I told her great, and to call me with the final designs and to let me know the labor cost, I didn't want anything too expensive. I said if it gets over 1,000 dollars please call me. She said "oh don't worry it won't be that expensive." Cut to probably 10 weeks later. Leading up to this, I called and texted the owner several times. What was the status? What are we going with and how much? Nothing. No communication, until the owner called and said my jewelry is ready for pick up. I entered and she told me my bill was 5300 dollars. I nearly passed out, and she clearly read my confusion, asking "what's wrong? This is a good price." I managed to gather myself to explain I'd never heard from her, and didn't know what pieces were being made and that it would cost this much. She excitedly got the jewelry to show me what she'd done, and while many of the pieces were nice, there were about 3 I would have said "pass" to in the design phase (if I'd ever seen them) and they ended up costing me about 2 of that 5+K. As I couldn't hold in my utter disbelief, she read my energy and "gave me a gold ring" which was a flimsy cast of a ring that was supposed to hold the rubies I'd given her, but she said it wouldn't work. She then handed me a bunch of diamonds and rubies taped to a piece of paper that she had told me would be incorporated in the designs. I asked what I was supposed to do with these now? I wouldn't have disassembled the pieces if she wasn't going to use them... a she says "this happens." Ok great, so shouldn't I have a choice in not getting my jewels handed back to me taped on a piece of paper? worse than where I left them? she explained how much more gold she had to use, which I told her I was not aware of. She then had the audacity to say "These are good prices for the labor, and I am being nice to you." The bill was the punch and this was the left hook. I paid and left. But I was pissed. A couple weeks later, I spoke with the nice employee, Angela, and told her about my experience with the owner. She encouraged me to come back in and speak with her, and she would try and help make her understand my frustrations and bad experience. A couple weeks later, I dropped by to speak with the owner, and brought back a couple of pieces I was hoping to get a refund for, as I wouldn't have wanted them if we'd communicated all along. I walked in and there were customers, so I figured she would take me into a private office, but nope, she had it out with me right there, in front of people. She would not return the pieces I wasn't happy with, costing me 2K, but offered a $150 credit after a lot of dramatics from her. seriously it was like a one-woman show of mania. Bottom line, I am not sure how this woman is in business. I calmly tried to explain my shock at the situation and how without communication, and being uncharged for 5x the amount I wanted to spend, I was feeling taken advantage of, to which she responded with things like "I've been doing this a long time" (basically I know what I'm doing and it's right) or "Now I can see the problem with your type of personality." Mind you, I am a friendly, non confrontational person, who is getting confronted by the owner who is blaming me for what happened and my experience... again in front of people. (who I kept mouthing sorry to) This woman has a personality disorder. A strange inflated sense of self, and ego. She thinks her "time" there makes her superior, and the customers are always WRONG. She has no problem ripping people off and then blaming you for it. Classic gaslighting. Do not recommend. read more

I was leaving for Italy the next day for a month and I needed a battery for my watch. Although they did replace my battery quickly. They did pinch the rubber making the watch not waterproof. I didn't notice until I checked what time it was and the face was cloudy from me sweating walking around with my luggage. Now I'm have to get another rubber seal and a watch cleaning to prevent any rust. read more

I had some jewelry cleaned and repaired and I've never had a worse experience. the owner is so incredibly rude and dismissive, completely over charges and lost stones on a very experience piece of jewelry and said she couldn't find them and she must not have lost them. Then come to find out she did lose them and was still rude to me acting as if it was such an inconvenience for her to look for them. I guess because I wasn't shopping for one of their overpriced tacky pieces of jewelry I wasn't worthy of her time. This year, for our 20th anniversary, he had Aida design a halo setting around my solitaire diamond. The result is amazing! The ring looks completely new and I am so thrilled with the results. I'm not the typical girl. I generally DON'T like perusing jewelry stores because of the death stares of the clerks whom innately posses the 6th jeweler sense of knowing about my slim wallet so I am a waste of time to them. This high level of discomfort results in my entering and leaving a jewelry store in nanoseconds. My latest discovery, however, is that I AM a girl: I just needed a proper jewelry store to bask me in customer service. Michael B is a high-end jeweler located on Ventura in the one of the busiest areas of Studio City. Very swank and high-end (I'm talking you have to buzz to enter the store); is small but feels like you walked into a store-sized diamond. Being prominent on many top LA lists for jewelry stores, one would expect snooty behavior and an over-presented store but it was modern with perfectly accessible and decorated cases. I am VERY judgmental based on first impressions and Michael B and crew instantly made me feel like Julia Roberts in Pretty Women (AFTER they realized that she was now rich and deserved pampering). I was instantly greeted by every employee including Michael himself even though they were helping other customers. Once it was my turn, I told the female clerk that I needed a ring band fitted on a vintage costume jewelry ring but wasn't sure if that was possible since it wasn't real. Michael took over the transaction and explained how he can re-do the entire ring (melt a whole new band for it) but that he can't fit it since it is fake. He was VERY pleasant and filled with knowledge. He did say he could provide one of those ring guards to allow me to temporarily wear it. I have very long and slender fingers so it took a few tries but he found one which made the ring wearable. When I asked how much it was, he replied, "Just take it. No problem". WOW! I am aware that this was probably a couple dollar item but that isn't the point. It is customer service like that which builds a dedicated brand loyalty base. I then asked to look at engagement rings just for fun as I never have in my adult life. I always envisioned an antique yellow amethyst cocktail ring with a band of diamonds versus a traditional engagement ring and he had EXACTLY what I was looking for. Modern but a antique-inspired cocktail ring for $10,800. I tried it on and BAM! I was suddenly giggly and glowing! I had NO idea I was THAT girl with engagement rings! Of course Michael instantly told my boyfriend not to pass me up blah blah. He was trying to sell the ring but wasn't rude and too pushy about it. I have never felt so pampered and welcome at a jewelry store. Michael B definitely has a loyal customer in both myself and my boy (and his name is Michael B too!). I got engaged on the 27th of November and about a month and a half before that my boyfriend (now fiancé) and I had been to three jewelry stores before walking into Matthew's, we are so happy we did. I really had no idea what to expect but I was beyond impressed. My fiancé and I are not at all "fancy" so we always joke about how we probably won't get the kind of customer service most "jewelry store people" get haha, but this store surprised us. They originally told me it would be 3-5 days but I got a message later in the day telling me it was done! Then I found a deal on Yelp for 1 Free Rhodium plating and polish if I checked in, which I did and I didn't have to pay anything! The staff is very friendly and personable. Mathew's is a classy jewelry store for more than just their gorgeous selection of fine jewelry. I had to replace the batteries in my niece's $10 neon jelly band kids watches. I had no idea that when I found them online under the Watch Repair category, the store was so elegant. I don't normally write reviews but this really bothered me. My friend said she got a ring sized at Matthew's for free, so I went to get it sized and then get another ring plated in yellow gold. She told me the ring I wanted sized had real diamonds in it (I was unsure.. so I asked). They held my rings for over a month.. and when I called to check up on them... she asked if I was getting them both plated in white gold? Which was concerning, as I was very clear. When the rings were finished a BUNCH of the diamonds were missing. She sent it to the back and he put a few CZ's in it... But there were STILL missing diamonds.. And she also said they were DIAMONDS... so why replace them with CZ's?? She then charged 60$ for the resizing..and 140$ for the plating... and told me "Im being nice to you"... I got home and the cz's have fallen out of my ring. Very frustrating. Especially after not having my rings for a month, missing diamonds and a kind of unprofessional experience. read more

The setting to my engagement ring had gotten loose so my diamond was wobbling in there and I needed it tightened. I hadn't purchased it from Matthew jewelers so when I called them to ask if they will repair it they said sure no problem come right in. I went there and they help me right away they even let me watch as they fixed my ring, to top it off they didn't even charge me. I will definitely be back when I need more diamonds. read more

Who would've ever thought I'd write a review for a top-notch jewelry store? Not me, that's for sure! But this store deserves a most-amazing review which is why I'm writing now! I was helping a friend shop for an engagement ring for his girlfriend for about 3 weeks before we stumbled upon Matthew's Jewelry Store. (BTW, my friend wanted to propose on his girlfriend's birthday which was less than 2 weeks away by the time we found Matthew's!) We had already gone to the jewelry mart downtown (both to downstairs vendors as well as the upstairs, more fine jewelry vendors) at least 3 times. We even went to a few jewelers there that were recommended by friends! By the time we went to Matthew's, we were sure of what we wanted and had learned a lot about diamonds and pricing, etc. We were amazed at how wonderful it was to work with Debi! She was straight-forward with pricing and was able to show us 5-7 GIA diamonds that met our requirements. We told her how we wanted the ring to look and be design-wise and she was able to do just that AND exceed our expectations! Price, quality, customer service - par excellence! Not to mention that when she showed us the finished ring, our jaws dropped in amazement! It's gorgeous! In addition to working with Debi, we were able to meet Michael B. - the man behind the store! If you don't know who he is, read about him on their website. He is a more than well-accredited jeweler who put platinum back on the map again, so to speak! He has won tons of awards, too, which made me more of a believer in doing business with the store! Michael and his wife, Aida, were such a pleasure to meet! They weren't a couple of lofty people with their noses in the air! Michael came out of his office just to meet my friend and I! We even got pictures with him! The shop is in a nice spot on Ventura in Studio City. The actual location is also where all the rings are designed and made! They took us on a tour where we were able to see the workmanship and detail put into every single ring! It was really cool! I went in without an appt the other day because one of my solitaire diamond earrings was loose in its setting and I was worried it would fall out. She took it from me, fixed it quickly and then offered to clean my wedding rings because they looked dirty. When I asked how much, the lady said no problem, it was free. I didnt buy anything there, although it looked like that had some lovely and unusual pieces.
