It is a privately, locally operated business, and the owner (Jud Matthey) is directly involved every single day- and occasionally works on some of the cars himself. While he cannot work on all of them he is actively involved daily in mentoring and training all of those he hires. He is 100% responsible for all work leaving his shop. He recognizes many of the chain businesses do not have the same commitment to service as one that bears their name. If you want an opinion on a car you are purchasing, they are the place to go for a pre-purchase inspection, if you are looking to have your car repaired right (and the first time), they got the place to go, if you want to deal directly with the owner of a business, and not just someone who manages it, they are the place to go. I am writing this review to warn others about my experience and prevent them from being scammed out of $165.45. I had my 2015 Hyundai Sonata towed to this shop because it wouldn't start. Before towing the car over, I called and explained to them that I had seen an anti-theft symbol on the dashboard before the vehicle turned off and wouldn't start. I also confirmed that this was something they could handle, and they assured me it was. The next day, I received a call informing me they would need to keep the car over the weekend because it still wasn't starting. On Monday morning, they contacted me again, saying they had used the one hour of labor to diagnose my car and would need another $165.45 to run more tests. They couldn't even guarantee these additional tests would identify the issue. From their report, it was clear they never got the car to start in the first place, so I'm skeptical about what tests they could have actually performed. Think twice before taking your car to this shop; they seem more interested in scamming people and taking their hard-earned money. read more

Last July Matthey replaced my 2012 E30 Ford van's engine with a Ford remanufactured 5.4L engine. I only had 3 issues 2 of which were corrected. There was a vacuum leak at the throttle body, very quickly corrected when I called it the noise I was hearing. Issue 2 was the power steering hose was routed the wrong way and I got that repaired out of state at a Ford dealer, and promptly was reimbursed for that by Matthey. the 3rd issue I didn't call in until a few months ago which it was my fault I didn't report right away. My oil dipstick was loose at the top. Its supposed to be attached by a bracket. I didn't pay attention to it much since I wanted to get this van back on the road to return to my work. I have a 2008 Ford E350 and I compared the two dipsticks and the 2008 sits 4 inches higher than the 2012 loose at the top dipstick. I sent Matthey an email and asked if there was an issue when installing the dipstick, and I received no response. I want to make it clear I would use Matthey again for this service but I would be much more careful and report back any issues right away. I'm writing this for any future customers, to just make sure you report any service issues right away which Matthey advised me to do. It seems the dipstick is giving an accurate reading, but it should be attached with the bracket at the top, which is missing and was never there when I picked up my van when the engine was installed. read more

This is actually an update of my review of Spirit Gasoline - the place has an official name now and all four pumps were busy when I pulled up. Yay! They actually squeegeed my windows the other day (not today though). Prices are on par with Wawa. (Previous review) How nice to see a local business come back to life! This station gradually died a slow death as gasoline prices had skyrocketed, with abandoned pumps showing $4.35 a gallon all winter long. Spring has sprung, and the new owners have thrown a new coat of paint and dropped the price of gasoline down to what you'd pay at Wawa. Good luck guys! read more

Went in for a simple oil change then I got charged $70 for a road test the charged $290 to change 2 fuel filters which is two steps higher than changing a light bulb.stay away if you know what's good for you read more

Had a great experience with the folks at Matthey today. They took me in today to get my headlight changed, even though they were busy and closing early for the holiday. And since I walked to their location, they were thoughtful enough to get it done before the rain was coming in this afternoon so I didn't have to get soaked on my way to pick up my car. My car broke down on the highway and was pushed into their lot on weekend night. Had a drop box and envelope questionnaire which I could complete and drop with the key. First thing Monday morning, I called and they told that the transmission had to be replaced AND they notified me that my dealership would pay for it because of the warranty. They notified the dealership towing service to pick up the car and gave me the 800# to follow up. This was amazing to me! They could have screwed me over, but they did not. Great customer service and quite ethical in my view. read more

Came in to see why my check engine light was on. Charged me $120 just to check the car out. Then when they found it was the O2 sensor wanted to charge me $500 to change it. I called 3 other places all were only charging $360 or lower to do the same repair. They weren't even going to include the $120 labor in the cost so it would have been over $600 to replace an O2 sensor. Went elsewhere where it only cost me $340 for the repair and they also scanned and checked to codes to make sure it wasn't anything else and didn't charge me for that. Do your research before you accept a quote from these guys. read more

One of the few places in the area to sell automotive diesel. i generally like them okay except for the time I gave the attendant 30 bux and only drove away with 1/4 tank of gas (which is the equivalent of roughly $10.) at first I though the meter was slow to register the gas and it would rise to 3/4 tank or so. Never happened. I hope it was an honest mistake, but in any event, I got the shaft the last time I was there. read more

If you are desperate for gas and can't drive out of Collingswood on less than 1 gallon in your tank...then go here! Otherwise, drive to the Wawa or some place on Route 130. This place is always 10-15 cents more, but it is right in town - so of course, you pay the price! The guys are super nice though - woo! read more

I had an acute problem with my car while on my way to work. I called Matthey and they could not have been more helpful on the phone. The woman on the phone was consulting with one of the mechanics and actually providing me with ideas of what it could be. And I'd never even been there before--I wasn't even a customer yet! It turns out I just had a bunch of ice stuck near my wheels (this was after a big snow storm) and once it melted my car was no longer shaking like crazy. But I found Matthey's to be so nice and comforting over the phone that I would definitely bring my car there the next time it needs fixing. Yay, great customer service is not dead! read more

Called to get an estimate for spark plugs and valve adjustment. I was quoted a price $320.00 more than the dealer. Not to mention the dealer would give me a loaner car for free until the repairs are completed. When I asked why the price was higher than the dealer. I was told that it depends on how involved the job is. After researching online the average cost for valve adjustment is $317-$420 and spark plugs replacement is $200-$245. High way robbery at it's best! When does the local automotive shop cost more than the dealer?? read more
