At first I went to a couple of the big mattress stores thinking I would get the best deal. I knew Mattress Makers was in La Mesa, but hesitated to go in as I thought a custom mattress company would be too expensive. Well, I did go in and was blown away not only by the quality and choice available, but by the more than competitive price as well. Sales people were unbelievably helpful as well. The 2 guys who delivered it were great - set it up (second floor) and showed us how to use the wireless adjustable controls. So now I have a custom setup - mattress and frame. We got a split California king (with an adjustable frame). Too bad there isn't a special 6 star rating for Mattress Makers! read more

This place is fantastic! I had a Murphy Bed that I needed a mattress for very quickly. I went online to their website and clicked on the "text us here" icon in the lower right corner. They immediately texted me and talked with me in detail about what type of mattress I was looking for and helped show me several options. My text conversation started on a Monday at 4pm and I had my new, handmade, incredibly comfortable mattress by Friday at 1pm. The same week! All during the process I was kept updated on the making and delivery of the mattress. It is exactly as described and the most comfortable mattress I've ever felt. We went with the Kensington Medium One-Sided. It's perfect. I will definitely be using Mattress Makers again and will absolutely recommend them. i got a recommendation from a friend to get a bed from here. It was mostly a recommendation because of their style of mattress being made out of organic materials and not some chemicals or plastic or anything that might cause allergic reactions. i kept looking at the website and thinking that it was a little bit pricey, especially when I was downsizing from a queen to a full because I was moving into a smaller apartment. So it finally came to crunch time and I NEEDED to get a mattress and I didn't want to move my old mattress to the new place. I looked at other options, but it stayed in my head that I should at least go see what the store was like, instead of just thinking they were too expensive. So, I met up with Pablo in the La Mesa store. I told him all of the above and that I needed it pretty soon. So he brings out the test pillow and the protective piece of fabric to place on top and he says we're going to start with the firm, go to the medium and then go to the soft. I KNEW I NEEDED A FIRM. I am a large woman. A firm mattress would last longer for my body type. But as I'm trying out all of these mattresses he tells me that a lot of people say they want a firm mattress, but give each one a try and see how you feel. After I kind of figured out what I wanted, I went to the table and we started talking about different things like how I sleep and do I snore (yes) and the things that make their mattresses different, what I hated about my last mattress, etc. Then he tells me to lie on the mattresses again because now I'm more relaxed and it will be more like when you are going to go to sleep. I thought that was pretty cool. Yeah, so I ended up with the mattress that I wanted and ordered a mattress pad and 2 pillows. It was a very lovely experience. I felt no pressure to buy and they do a very good job of telling you about the warranty and I even learned about latex and rubber trees. They said it might take up to 14 days to make it, but they got it done in about a week. (Not saying this will happen to you, but it was a nice surprise) The delivery guys were very nice and worked around all of the stuff going on while I was moving. They showed me how to use the fancy remote control for the Gold package. They even removed my old mattress from my old apartment (not saying this will happen to you, but it was a nice surprise) I can't think of anything that would've made the purchase of my mattress more enjoyable. If you are worried about spending a little more on a bed, it's really worth it to buy it with their excellent warranty. You will love them as much as I do. Maybe you, too, will write a 5 star review. OMG! My new pillow is amazing. I have never found ONE pillow that has the firmness I need, until now. I have previously had to stuff two pillows into one case to get it semi-close, but with their custom pillows I was able to get one that is "just right". Unquestionably the best customer service experience we have ever had at a San Diego retailer. Great product, reasonable pricing, smooth and rapid delivery (and removal of old mattress), and MUCH better sleep as a result. What helped us the most was spending over an hour trying out different mattresses in the store...that really narrowed things down for us. Pablo was very patient...and very informed about Latex. We didn't follow all of his recommendations, but we're certainly quite happy with all of his recommendations we DID follow. :-) Thank Pablo! I bought a new bed back in February and it's now June and I decided I needed it a bit firmer - they have the best policy and customer service- they exchanged my latex with no problems. Felt very comfortable at Mattress Makers La Mesa. No pushy salesperson following us around as we checked out the mattresses. Pablo asked questions to get an understanding of how we sleep to make suggestions and encouraged us to try various mattresses to find one to meet both of our needs. Both my husband and I have back issues and I am a bit of a restless sleeper but have found since receiving the new mattress I am far less restless and my back is not cranky in the morning. Our old mattress was horrible! An expensive name brand from a big box store, it started breaking down pretty quickly after we bought it, and the warranty said all the lumpiness and the ridge down the middle was acceptable! We did some online research and found that memory foam is often used in mattresses these days, but latex is much more comfortable and durable. So we started looking for a mattress with latex. Positive yelp reviews brought us the Mattress Makers store on La Mesa Blvd. They are a local family business that manufactures and sells latex mattresses. Pablo helped us, answered all our questions, and allowed us to try out the mattresses with no sales pressure or rush. We made our decision and our new mattress was delivered the following week. We happened to see this store during La Mesa's Octoberfest and so glad they were open. They were very informative and not pushy at all. Since we were trying out a mattress from an online business and had already called for a pick up, we were in need of a mattress quick! They expedited our order and we received our custom mattress within a week. I love how the mattress are built-nothing is glued and can be switched out for more firm or soft inserts. I love mattress from Mattress Makers. The guys at the La Mesa store made the testing and buying experience pleasant. There are a limited number of models so the comparison process is easy. My husband and I are large/heavy people and had struggled to find a comfortable bed that was supportive. We usually had to give up comfort for sturdy durability. In 13 years we've had four beds, not counting a "3 return" buying experience with a top of the line Beautyrest with sides that kept blowing out. We longed for an "old-fashioned" durable steel spring mattress with nice padding for comfort and finally found the perfect bed at Mattress Makers. Love my new mattress!! I've been sleeping on it for 3 weeks now. Can't say enough wonderful things about this amazing family business. Customer service is top notch!! The price is right. By eliminating the middle man, and selling and manufacturing their own mattresses, they can eliminate much of the cost and make your new mattress very affordable. I went in the first time and Sam helped me. He was helpful without being pushy. He educated me on the different types of mattresses. I was pretty sure I wanted a very firm mattress, so I purchased it and then a few days later realized it was too firm. I went back in and this time Gabe helped me. He was just as amazing as Sam. He was very friendly and helpful. He put in a new order for a softer mattress and put a rush on it. It was delivered in less than a week. As for the delivery guys, Isai and Uriel, they are also top notch! Very professional and friendly. After doing tons of research and checking out mattresses at many other stores--Mattress Firm Mission Valley, Avocado La Jolla, Casper UTC, Ortho Mattress--I finally stumbled across this gem. I knew I wanted latex because I wanted to be eco friendly, didn't want all those stinky memory foam chemicals in my room, and wanted longevity. I was consistently greeted by the most genuinely kind and honest people--I went a few times. What's more is their mattresses were more comfortable and supportive than the comparable hybrid or full latex Avocado. Right off the bat the prices were better. Plus they have this cool customizable pillow station. I was sold before they even gave me such a generous discount! Who wouldn't rather support a local, family owned business? On top of everything, because I live so close, they delivered the mattress for free and set up my new adjustable base. Who does that? I literally told them that I understand they are a business and need to make a living. They insisted! Don't expect this lol. I guess I got lucky because I live so close. I searched for an organic latex mattress for 4 years. I purchased one from Flexus Comfort but it stunk up my whole house and made me sick. They took it back but the ordeal cost me about $300. I was so upset that I gave up the search until a few months ago. I was skeptical of all these 5 star reviews for Mattress Makers but all those reviews couldn't be fake. So I made the 2 hour drive and was glad I did. I tried out all the latex mattresses and with the help of Sam Hernandez realized that talalay latex has a smell and dunlop does not. So I went with the dunlop Solana Plush mattress and it is great! Just like the other reviews, there was no smell at all. At first I was concerned because it was too firm, like sleeping on the sidewalk. So I called and talked to Pablo and he said to just wait 4 weeks and see if it softens up. So I did, and he was right. It softened up and is now very comfortable. I had a little bump with the delivery. Because I live so close to their ware house they made an exception and delivered it straight from where they are made. Only problem the delivery guys were like Cheech and Chong. They had no experience delivering a mattress so it was touch and go, but they finally got it all done. I'm so happy I found this store. Everyone who works there is patient and knowledgeable and they make it easy to find exactly what you need. Go there. You won't be disappointed. read more

Sam was so helpful and knowledgeable that I was reminded what customer service should be. My custom mattress was made in the time he estimated and he even helped me load it into my truck. I walk my dogs in the Village all the time. I have always wondered about this store. I see people coming out with the pillows and wonder. I finally get sick of the over-designed but failing (after 3y of use) $3000 mattress I got from a local furniture company with poor customer service and decide to go into Mattress Makers. SO GLAD!! No pressure. I must have been in there for close to an hour trying on the beds. Even told they could further customize the level of firmness if I felt the need. The process is all inclusive including getting the right pillow for your sleeping style. You do have to wait for delivery but it was worth the wait. I waited to write my review because I developed hip bursitis the night before delivery and then went on a short vacation right after delivery! Once I got back, and as my hip got better, I started sleeping better and better. No neck pain, back is better every night. The mattress looks insignificant next to that thick, pillow topped mattress I had, but the simplicity of the style is awesome and the key to its comfort. They have some pretty good customer service and, hopefully, I will not need to try out the warranty. I'm also always searching for a better pillow. These pillows are the best I've had. I did take the pillow with me on vacation, something I never do. Sleeping happy. read more

I hadn't purchased a mattress in years mainly due to the fact that I have a chronic pain condition, connective tissue disorder & autoimmune disease. It makes leaving the house very difficult and try several mattresses for comfort nearly impossible. I was moving down south and definitely needed a new mattress. After much research, due to all my allergies and special requirements for my new mattress I knew it was going to be a difficult search a big investment. Mattress Makers came up on yelp with great reviews. I spoke to Gabe initially and told him I'd be coming in, however my mom ended up coming in. Being that the mattress was for me and I wasn't even there he was still able to help her narrow it down to two mattresses. He was extremely kind and knowledgable. My mom told him she'd be bringing me back later but it turned out I was too sick. Gabe was wonderful! I was able to order the perfect mattress over the phone because he asked the right questions and truly cares. They also say it takes about 45 days to truly see if it's the right comfort level. If it's not, they can have someone come out to adjust the filling (I hope I got that fact right). I ordered my mattress pretty last minute to my move in date and Gabe made sure I had it right in time. I am beyond happy with my purchase and haven't slept this well in a very long time.
