I've lived in the region my whole life so naturally Matucci's is what pops into my head when I think of a restaurant and come to think of it Matucci's is prolly the first place i remember eating out at. Over the years things change and other than a party catered in the back room I haven't eaten hear in years and years until last week I stopped for something different and to break up my routine, needles to say I got a good plate of food (Pasta & Meat Balls). I returned with a friend later in the week for another meal and again was happy, so the foods good - - - the Best ehhh maybe if you don't get out much. Memories abound hear for me,, the memory lane trip is helped by that fact that not one thing about the place has changed from the 60's, the color, the seating, the lighting and I'm pretty certain the furniture. Charming or A Dive depends on the user. Menu needs work as to ingredients and style of preparation in a time of abundant Italian Restaurants a Pasta Primavera is not the same every where as is a Chicken Marsala different from one to the other Matucci's offer only the generic name and its a surprise what you'll get,,, I'm not big on surprises so I was shy to stray from pasta dishes. Service was OK but you don't really come here in a hurry anyway. Heres my take : When I leave Olive Garden I'm full Happy and titillated. When I leave Matucci's I'm full and satisfied. The Olive Garden prolly cost me $20 + and I got an hour and a half ride home. I don't plan to wait as long between visits to Matucci's as before and plan to explore the sandwich menu a bit. read more

Our family used to go every time we gathered. We have kids and grand kids out of town, so it was a great place to go. Great food, nice atmosphere. Lately, the quality of the food has gone down hill. Not sure what it is, but things are just not what they used to be. We have a big family so we order a variety of classic dishes, pasta, baked dishes, and other things. The consensus was the same... If you want food with flavor, don't go here. First all the home made meat ravioli is nothing more but way to think of pasta with a meatball with the bottom cut off. Their tomato sauce has no flavor or seasonings. Feels like it came straight out of a can and nothing added to it. Always heard good things about this place, but after going there, I regret the decision. I would save my money and go to Olive Garden; at least I know I'll get food with flavor. read more

We have been going to Mattucci's for 40 years and has been my go-to place for my birthday. Unfortunately, it has changed for the worst. They use to have the best chicken parm of any place I have ever eaten it. Two birthdays ago it just wasn't Mattucci chicken. I asked the bartender about it and he said because of gov't regulations they went to frozen breaded chicken breast instead of their own breaded chicken. We haven't been back since. Traveling from out of town. For central PA the Italian at Mattucci's was okay. I had the chicken parmesan dinner with a salad and gnocchi. The portions were large, enough that I had gnocchi and chicken parmesan left over for a second meal. The chicken was a thick, nicely breaded cutlet, and the sauce was edible, but nothing too extraordinary. The gnocchi was slightly overcooked, but still had enough taste to get the job done. However, the salad left a lot to be desired, it tasted like (and looked like) it was straight from a store bought mix. The bread brought to the table was a cut loaf and was definitely not freshly made. The service was fine, but slow, even for the quiet lunch rush. The ambiance of the restaurant lacks, and it seems better times are in the restaurants past. read more

During this time of Covid I do not go out to eat in restaurants because of some serious health problems I have. I don't want to eat in a restaurant and be exposed to Covid. I've been going to Mattucci's since I was a child and I'm now 55. They always had a reputation of being very clean. For my birthday in November 2019 my husband went into their kitchen for a take out order. There were other customers in the kitchen waiting for their orders. There were also their employees walking around the kitchen. The ONLY PERSON WEARING A MASK WAS MY HUSBAND! Even their employees/cooks were not wearing masks. I won't be going there during Covid and I am so disgusted I won't be going back again anytime soon, Absoulutely disgusting! read more

The waiter took our order then forgot our order, came back 10 minutes later for our order again then forgot my order. I had to wait 15 more minutes till my food came out while everyone else got to eat. Our refills of soda came back half empty. We got charged for things that came with the dinner. And I also told the guy that I was allergic to mushrooms to make sure the cooks do not have my food around it for which he must not of told them because I had an allergic reaction from mushrooms. read more

On a recommendation we tried this establishment. We expected a wait, due to a spur of the moment dining decision and no reservations. We hit it lucky, less than a 5 minute wait to be seated and maybe another 10 to 15 to get waited on and place our orders. It was fairly busy. Rose got the breaded Veal and I went out on a limb and got Chicken Rollatini..Prosciutto and cheese, rolled in a chicken breast, in butter and bathed in Marsala wine sauce. From their web site we knew they made everything from scratch so we ate our salads and watched other diners orders being served...By looks alone, I KNEW we made a good dining choice. LARGE portions and appealing dishes flew by. The wait staff worked like a well oiled machine; and was pleasant and friendly besides. In a timely manner our food was served and I immediately knew we'd be going home with at least one 'doggie bag'. Our meat portions were large enough to occupy a large dinner plate with our sides served on the side on another smaller plate. Toss into the mix that we were served a manly portion of fresh baked bread and butter.... We both were in Food Heaven. As we were eating, I saw that we had arrived at just the right time as their business had picked up. I out did myself and cleaned my plate AND had room for coffee and cheese cake w/strawberry sauce. Rose did get a take-home container for half of her veal and had Apple Pie dessert with coffee. On top of the extremely Tasty meals, their home made desserts and their coffee were top shelf. We had a party of 5 that spent the day at Knoebels Covered Bridge Festival and were starved at the end of a very long day. Anyone that has spent the whole day walking around a place like Knoebels can testify that one is not very picky for great food, or even good food, just something that isn't "Fair Food" to rid the hunger pains...Well, I am here to tell you that I have had better food at a Soup Kitchen! And when we apologized for having to tell management that our dinners were extremely disappointing and unacceptable, we were asked to leave the restaurant by the owners daughter. This "italian" restaurant was HORRIBLE!!! I ordered what they called chicken parm!!! Which consisted of 2 processed chicken patties with what seemed to be canned spaghetti sauce!!! It was disgusting!!! My sister ordered pasta primavera which had frozen vegetables in it and the "sauce" was like water! We were being served by the owners daughter who had no clue about the menu told us that the calamari was homemade and it definitely wasn't (bagged Sysco distributed garbage) served us tonic water when we asked for seltzer, didn't bring the food out all together and when I asked to speak to a manager she brought me into the kitchen where I was very calmly speaking to the owner and she told me to get out!!! An Italian shrine in Central Pennsylvania run the old fashioned way by third generation family in Mt. Carmel. Pay no attention to the know-nothings or local competitors who give it one star? This little restaurant DOES lack atmosphere and does have a menu tooooo long. But everything but the thin pastas at this restaurant is home made from scratch, including all the salad dressings. Try the Italian Combo for the hearty and exploratory appetite! The Calamari in garlic/oil with home made pasta is outstanding. Ditto the sauce, the pizza, the superlative bread, etc. The kitchen is actually bigger than the restaurant seating area! The service is not intended to be fast food. I LOVE the fact that this place is still in business. We'd go there every time we'd visit the grandparents in the "coal region". Matucci's is a gem -- the best shrimp de jonge. Great pizza, but awful service. This review is strictly regarding their take out as I've only dined in once or twice in my 37 years, but I order their pizza with onions every time I'm in town. Honestly, their pizza is amazing and one of a kind. I've lived in a lot of different places since moving out of my hometown and nothing is quite like a Matuccis pizza with onion. They do it right. Diced onion put right in to the sauce. Most other places slice them and put them on top. Dicing and putting it in the sauce really adds a new level of natural sweetness that is amazing. They also must use a whole milk mozzarella, because the cheese is on point and their dough has a unique and almost artisanal flavor. They are lucky that their pizza is the best and impossible to replicate, because if it were anything less I wouldn't put up with the quality of service. They are nice enough, but in typical Coal Region fashion, they act like they don't want to make money. Half the time they just don't pick up the phone - even after 30 rings! And when they do pick up you are typically told that it will take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours for your pizza pretty much anytime of day. Even if the parking lot is empty, you still hear estimates around an hour. When you show up to pick up (in the kitchen, which would be impossible for a new customer to find because there are no signs, but Coal Region logic dictates that new customers aren't important) you stand and watch them make pizza after pizza for up to 20 minutes while you stare at your pizzas with your name on the box. Its truly mystifying to imagine what finally makes them grab your food and ring you out. The length they make you wait is totally random. In conclusion, Matuccis has epic pizza, but the customer most definitely is not the focus at this place. But the pizza is worth the lack of attention TBH. read more

We came to this restaurant not knowing what to expect since we are from out of town. Everything we had was absolutely delicious and the staff was very nice. We started with the calamari, mozzarella sticks, and hot wings.... All were fantastic. The home made bread was also delicious! My long awaited dinner at Mattuccis was a sore disappointment considering it's reputation. The restaurant had been recommended by some friends and on line reviews were good. So we combined the visit with a tour of the Yuengling brewery. The pros were a average Manhattan, the fried calamari appetizer and the brewery tour. The cons were overcooked pasta and ho hum atmosphere. My wife had crab stuffed flounder which she enjoyed. However, her side of angel hair pasta was seriously overcooked and inedible. The tomato sauce tasted OK. My shrimp scampi was bland with overcooked spaghetti and five small overcooked shrimp. The included salads consisted of wilted lettuce adjoined by three small wedges of tomato. The restaurant was quite chilly. Won't be back - ever! read more

Excellent food. The calamari on the menu is in a soy sauce which I didn't understand so I asked for it in oil, garlic and basil which was excellent. Just came from there. I feel compelled to share with you how horrendous the experience was. I went there with my father to celebrate a belated veterans day. We left feeling extremely disrespected. Its true what they say. This place WAS decent in the past. Anyone that tells you its a good place to eat now has no clue. The food was average. I am having a difficult time even believing how bad the service was...we made a reservation. When we arrived there was a bit of confusion and then we were seated at a table that looked like it was set for us. The waitress ( if i can even call her that ) took our drink order. She brought us warm tap water in a beer mug and a coffee for my father and a beer for myself. After our food came it was like we weren't even there. No asking for refills..no asking if we needed cheese with the pasta...no nothing. After we were almost done with our meal i asked for some rolls and my father asked for a refill on his coffee and water. His cup and glass was taken away and never returned. It just sat there while i heard the waitresses talking and talking. I could see into the kitchen and the coffee mug just sitting there forgotten. I finally after many minutes had to get up actually put my head through the kitchen opening and tell the waitress my dad is waiting for his coffee. Finally after that they brought more luke warm tap water and another coffee. My father was obviously disappointed and annoyed. The waitress then came out and over stated almost yelling at us "ready for your bill?"...to add insult to injury she them asks us "need any change back?" I have had better service at a 5 year olds lemonade stand. I felt insulted and disrespected. Worst service experience I have ever experienced. If the owners allow this absurd level of horrible service they obviously dont really care about their business which in turn means they dont care about the customer. ( can i call it service? There really wasnt any )...and the last torpedo that sunk the ship? Very Loud foul language ( the f-bomb...and more ) coming from the bar so that anyone in the dinning room could hear. I'm very going to Matucci's for over 50 years and today's pizza is as exceptional as it was 50 years ago -- took my girlfriend there while in college and today she (now my wife) will routinely travel over 100 miles to enjoy this restaurant. We stopped here on our way between Knoebels and the mine tour in Ashland. We came with my parents and kids. A party of 7. The throwback ambiance of the place made us a little nervous but the food ended up being well worth the visit. We found out that they make their own hoagie/sub rolls. So my dad, tried a muffuletta. He devoured it. My mom got a burger that she loved. My wife and I split a meatball hoagie. The Roll was perfectly soft and flavorful and was clearly homemade with care. The meatballs might possibly have been the best meatballs I have ever eaten in my life. We ordered a 10 inch plain pizza for the kids. I ate the last slice and it was amazing. The sauce had a sweetness to it, and the crust had an incredibly unusual flakiness to it. Once I ate it immediately I looked to see if any of the kids have left any bit behind because I had to have some more. If you are ever in the mail Carmel area, this is a must try restaurant. read more
