We had an outstanding experience with this snorkeling company. Our family of four includes two young children who are six and eight, and both were nervous about getting into the water. With the help of our expert instructor and pro diver, that changed within minutes. He guided them with patience and confidence, and they ended up enjoying every moment. They are already asking when we can go back out into the ocean. We saw a wide range of sea life, including colorful fish, beautiful corals, and a few turtles. We also learned about the history of Hawaii, fun facts about the area, and how to identify different species while we snorkeled. The underwater scavenger hunt was a creative touch that kept the kids excited throughout the tour. Our instructor was professional, knowledgeable, and even captured photos and videos of us underwater, which was a great bonus. Water and healthy snacks were provided after the tour, which we appreciated. If you have small children or if it is your first time snorkeling, I highly recommend this company. I had wanted to book a private snorkel tour for myself and 3 girls (22, 18, and 18). I hadn't been snorkeling in over 20 years. Safety was a priority for me and just having fun obviously another . I had done research and done a previous boat type snorkel which was just ok. I came across Maui Snorkel Tours and I was sold ! The day before I found out where we needed to meet and some pre- snorkel instructions (make sure to eat !!) . Off we went at 7am to start our adventure. Toby was our guide. He spent a good 30 minutes instructing us and then educating us on what we may see. I have a slight fear of the ocean and with Toby as our guide, I was completely comfortable. He even brought me 2, wet suits to wear so I wouldn't get cold. To say it was amazing is an understatement. We saw 6 turtles ! Many beautiful fish and even a lobster that had shed its exoskeleton. My lungs aren't the best anymore thx to 2020- Toby noticed right away when I started to get tired . We all went back to shore to enjoy snacks and discuss what we had seen . The ones on the boat had the captain and crew showing them how to snorkel. And if you needed call Haas, an adult, they really were spectacular across the board. The breakfast and lunch were great and they had drinks the entire time. I know there's a lot of options in Maui for snorkeling and what not but this one was fabulous. Definitely exceeded expectations! Maui Snorkel Tours, taught by Toby, was the perfect way for my little kids and I to try snorkeling in a low pressure, low hassle way. Bc my kids (6 and 9) have never snorkeled before, I wanted an experience in which they could learn fundamentals, have dedicated attention, and have fun. All three boxes checked! Although companies that boat you out to a great spot can pretty much guarantee great views, I was worried about lack of supervision, possible motion sickness, and other kid variables coming into play. Being off shore and having one teacher alayed my worries and helped me feel more was in my control. Toby was a fantastic teacher. He knew how to work and engage with little kids. He knew how to work with a worried mother (me!). He led us with clear instructions, and we got to see many varieties of fish, coral, other marine creatures. We saw sea turtles! The intro phase of the experience included 30-45 minutes of instruction, including a primer on the marine life. Although this part glazed over my son a bit, this info made the snorkeling more exciting as we had some reference for all the great stuff we saw. He is easygoing and very experienced as a diver specifically in Hawaii, and gave us a thorough rundown of the fish that we would be seeing, which made it more exciiting when we saw them later. He himself pointed out fish by name as we went along that we would have otherwise missed, and took us to a good spot to see several green sea turtles! Our day snorkeling with Sue was the highlight of our trip!! She took the time to educate us on the amazing wildlife that we would see before heading out with our private crew. That really was special as it was fun to be able to look for and identify the various species she taught us about. I even ordered the same books after so I could study more for next time. Highly recommend if you don't want a touristy crowded snorkel adventure. We didn't want a boat tour crowded with other tourist boats and wasting time getting to a snorkel spot. She picked the location the day of based on conditions which ended up being perfect!!! We had a good time! Toby, our guide, was very friendly and kept pointing out sea life to the group. There were a total of six in our group, my husband and I and a father with three kids, and he kept everyone together and took good care of the youngest. (I'd definitely say this is a family-friendly tour!) We did not go to Molokini or the southern turtle spotting places, instead going up north to Honolua Bay due to the clearer water. (We saw Trilogy and another boat company out as well, so it was clearly a popular decision due to the rain.) He had us go decently far out (past the boats) to where the reef shelf dropped off, and we had the luck to spot a Manta Ray, turtles (I had an incredible up-close encounter!) and an impressively large barracuda, in addition to the usual reef-dwelling suspects! Pros: Small group that is mobile (not stuck next to a boat) and closely accompanied by your friendly guide.) Nice explanation of fauna Wetsuits (water felt cold after a while) and snacks (thanks for the yummy pineapple!) provided Cons: I frankly enjoy boats, so a shore tour is never quite as exciting to me--driving out to your spot and parking, then wading out, just isn't as glamorous as going over the side, even if it IS easier and more sensible for beginners! You also miss out on potential whales and dolphins, if it happens to be humpback season. Don't bring anything you mind getting muddy! Price also seemed high for a tour that required no boat, stayed in one area and did not provide a meal. (I'm guessing this is due to small group size, as they cap at seven.) Total actual time of tour (not counting driving, handing out gear, etc was not that long--we gathered at 7:30, didn't get into the water until maybe close to nine, and were back on shore by around 11. Granted that is plenty of time to wear out a beginner, but for 100 dollars, I personally wouldn't have minded more. Bottom line: I would highly recommend this to families, since it's a small group, extremely beginner and child friendly, and not too exhausting. If you are into boats, catered meals, multiple locations, Molokini or longer snorkel times, you'll still enjoy this tour, but you can consider other options. read more

They are friendly and know what they're doing. 2) The Mai Tais are the best on the island. I'm not a Mai Tai drinker, generally, because they're so high in sugar/calories. These are three types of booze with a splash of juice and Sprite (you can ask them to sub club soda). The Bikini Blonde beer is excellent. Note: they don't break out the booze until the snorkel /swimming portion of the trip is over. It's an insurance/liability issue. 3) While the capacity of the boat is 55 or 60, the 7AM five-hour trips tend to be half that. Everyone was incredibly friendly and it was nice to spend time with people from all over the United States (MN, OR, CA). 4) SNUBA is the best thing I've never heard of. It's an up-charge of 60 bucks but you get to explore the reefs at Molokini and Turtle Bay. For another 50, you get pictures from the dive. I've always wanted to certify for SCUBA and today's experience solidified my resolve to do so within the next year or two. Simply magical. 5) You get a twofer: snorkel plus whale watching. Our whale watching was longer than usual because a tiger shark sighting cut the Turtle Bay portion of the trip short. Such a bummer. This was the best activity my husband and I did on our trip to Maui, hands down. I've traveled extensively for over half my life and Maui Snorkel Tours is like having an antiquities historian who is also your grandpa take you on a tour of the Pyramids--but for the ocean. Toby was our guide and he was so awesome! He's so friendly and gave us so much info on the fishes, Maui, and more. We felt safe and cared for with Toby. I loved that it was only me and my Fiance, instead of a whole group, because the experience felt more intimate. Toby made sure that we were comfortable the whole time, and we saw so many fishes and several turtles up close too! This snorkeling adventure is the best. On May 17, 2017 I've got to see marine life in their natural habitat without disturbing mother nature. Also, Suzzy is the greatest instructor to go out with. She has been doing the tours for over 20 years. She knows where the best spots are to see green sea turtles. I watch the turtles swim and come up for air. I see the "turtle car wash" where turtles go to have their shells clean by fish. Suzzy shows me different kinds and categories of fish. I'm not the best person with water, and although I've snorkeled once in the past it was quite a while ago, so I was nervous about joining my family for a snorkeling expedition. But I shouldn't have worried because Suzzy Robinson was absolutely amazing! Seriously, I cannot recommend her enough. I researched snorkel tour options and chose Maui Snorkel Tours because they seemed focused on snorkeling, not sightseeing, dining, etc. I'm so glad I chose this company. There were 18 or 20 people on our tour. We got onto the boat, which has seats facing outward so everyone has a seat with a view. We headed straight to Molokini. On the way there, we were given our gear and offered rash guards and reef-safe sunblock. When we reached the protected side of Molokini, we were told how to use the gear, what areas we should/should not snorkel in, specific fish to look for, and how to get on and off the boat. Then we were off. The location was beautiful. Other tour companies were there. One company had a lot of kids and a crewmember was in the water with them and pointing out fish. Our group had only adults and the crew stayed on the boat. I felt safer having the crew on the boat watching all of us but other people might prefer having crewmembers in the water. The variety and quantity of fish and coral was stunning. We stayed at one spot for a long time - maybe an hour - which gave us plenty of time to explore. We went to another area on the protected side of Molokini where octopi can be found. Only 1 person in our group saw an octopus. We then went around to the open ocean side of Molokini and the crew told us where to get close to the rocks so the waves will lift us up like an elevator without throwing us into the rocks. That was fun! We then went to 2 spots around Turtle Town and saws lots of turtles. When we got back to Kihei, the crew offered to give us restaurant suggestions. We asked about any vegetarian/vegan restaurants and got a great recommendation. This was one of the best things we did on Maui. We were so glad we decided to go with Maui Snorkel Tours. read more

I am the ultimate researcher ... after due diligence,​ I choose Maui Snorkel and it was the right decision. I have been on snorkel tours before in Maui and had a good experience . . . that said, when I​ was told that we were not heading far out on a boat - I was disappointed and​ curious. My 'boat' snorkel was a jump in for a few minutes then​ off again to another site - wasted time on the boat. With Ed in charge of this tour,​ everything was great. Firstly, he explained all that we were going to see, pictures etc from books that he actually took for the publications. He provided wetsuits​ - all the correct size (asked on the phone during booking) and good equipment​. The wetsuits made a world of difference - we made our way past the reef and stayed out for well over an hour. That would not have been possible without the suits. And it made the trip pleasant - no rushing, just a leisurely swim with scores of giant green turtles and plenty of tropical fish (that I could​ recognize as we were prepped by Ed before getting in the water). Never felt at risk by waves, reefs, etc. - even a non-swimmer who was on the trip enjoyed the experience and had a float board to hang onto for extra security. read more

We didn't know what to expect, having never done a snorkel tour before. Our group consisted of adults in their 70s, middle-ages, and younger. They were able to schedule our tour for a beach within a half hour drive of our resort. The older people were hesitant at first but felt more comfortable as our guide walked us through the process. During our swim, we saw loads of different finishes, over a dozen sea turtles, even a white tip reef shark. We were so glad we had gone because we don't think the 70-year-olds would have gone snorkeling without the guidance and courage meant that we got. read more

My wife and I are non-swimmers. But we are comfortable doing easy water sports with life jackets. This was our first snorkeling experience. This was an amazing experience for us. This gently pushed our boundaries and we will definitely try snorkeling whenever possible in the future. We took private tour. Our guide Ed was very patient and explained us how to use the gear and how to snorkel. He also explained the types of fishes using a book before going in. That helped us to understand what we are seeing while we are snorkeling. Note that they don't use a boat, they just take you to 200 ft from the shore by swimming. Boogie board really helped. Ed took us to a location where the sea is calmer and waited until the wind calmed down further. We felt completely safe and comfortable all the time, even with 50 feet depth. We saw dozens of types of fishes, coral reef and several turtles as close as three feet from us. It was so much fun even after 1.5 hours of snorkeling. He also provided two layers of wet suit to keep us warm. That really helped. We highly recommend going with them, especially for non-swimmers and novice snorkelers. If you are a non-swimmer, take a private tour to keep the full attention on you. That's totally worth it. One thing they can improve is the length of the tour. During booking, they mentioned as 7.30 to 11.30, but they brought us back to the shore by 10.10 even though we spent the first one hour driving, wearing the gear and learning from the books. Essentially it was only 1.5 hours of snorkeling. They could split it into two one-hour sessions with a break in between. Considering 1.5 hours, the price seems expensive. What an amazing day with Toby and Maui Snorkel Tours! Was the highlight of our week in Maui. Toby took a ton of time (maybe just maybe a little too much time) getting our group fitted for the snorkel gear, group of 6 including two children. Then he spent time going over the fish and sea life we'd be seeing that day so we could identify while we were in the water. Location was mile marker 14, a tiny beach off the highway, a little further than we had hoped as we were staying in Wailea, but it turned out to be amazing snorkeling. Tons of parrot fish, yellow tang and humuhumunukukuapua'a. We settled above an area with about a half dozen turtles and watched them take naps, get cleaned by other fish and come up for air. Toby took amazing care of the whole group but took control of the kids and helped them enjoy the trip. Can't recommend enough based on the service, the private group and the snorkeling! read more

Our family had a fantastic morning snorkeling with Toby! As others have mentioned, this is no "hop on a boat with 30 strangers" operation. They only take out a small group - in our case, six people (our family of four plus another couple) - and spend plenty of time beforehand making sure everyone is comfortable using the masks/wetsuits and showing/talking about the types of fish and coral we're likely to encounter before getting in the water. It was the perfect way for our kids (ages 9 and 7), who had never snorkeled before, to get acclimated to snorkeling. Toby also gave my wife, who gets cold easily, a second wet suit to wear, as well as a mask with optical lenses (she wears glasses). We met Toby near Olowalu and he took us out on the reef where guided us around and helpfully pointed out numerous fish, probably a dozen sea turtles, and more. Our kids are decent swimmers but, after an hour on the water, they appreciated being able to grab onto Toby's boogie board while he led us all back to shore. Afterwards, there were snacks (including one more type of fish: goldfish crackers) and a recap of the fish we'd seen. Being a first time snorkler, I did a lot of research before deciding on a excursion. I'm so glad we chose Maui Snorkel Tours. After booking, they kept in contact with us. Our guide was Toby. He was a sweetheart and you could he loved what he was doing. What i liked most about this tour was that it started at the shore not from a boat. The first 45 minutes a so, we were fitted for our gear and he gave us great instruction. He also reviewed some of the fish we would see. When we first got out there i had a mini anxiety attack due to breathing through the tube and i almost turned around. Toby was patient and assured me I would be fine. He had me hold on to a boogie board and led the way. We saw many fish and turtles along the way. After the tour we had a nice review of what we had seen over some amazing snacks like pina colada bread and pineapples. Jeffrey is the bomb. I've now gone out with him twice on two different trips, and it's been a winner every time. Dozens -- dozens! -- of enormous sea turtles plus a lot of other oddball creatures, but the key to the deal is that Jeffrey exhibits zero pretension and guile in a business that has plenty of it. Only knock: inevitably there seems to be some kind of screwup with the timing. More often than not, it's some other knuckleheaded family that forgets to wake up on time or gets lost, but I also think sometimes the Maui Snorkel Tours folks screw the messaging up too. In any event, it really, really, really sucks to wake up early, get where you need to be on time, and then sit there waiting for 30-45 minutes while everyone else figures their shit out. read more

Suzzy, your so amazing! Thank you for being so patient and kind to us during our snorkeling tour! Thank you for the snacks, banana bread and the cute little balloons! If this is your first time snorkeling please do yourself a favor and book with this place. Suzzy will give you close instruction and make sure you are 100% comfortable with all that your doing. This isn't a jump off the boat in the middle on the ocean type of tour. This is straight off the beach swimming into the beautiful coral reefs type of tour. We met at Leodas (see my review for Leodas, omg best place) and then we were to follow Suzzy in our car to our destination which was supposed to be 2 minutes away and it turned into an hour away!!! Let me explain: we arrived at the destination and Suzzy said the waves were to high and it was to windy so she wanted to take us to another destination which we thought ok that's fine, but it would have been nice to know we were gonna drive an hour away to reach it. This hour includes the stop we had to make at her shop to pick up some additional gear for my 6 year old daughter. At this point we were all annoyed and not happy at all. Once we got to the destination we had to drive in circles to find parking which took about another 15-20 minutes, you can imagine our frustration at this point. Once we finally parked and got out to the beach I asked that we skip the introduction about the different fish because we just wanted to get out there and snorkel, during this time of my clearly frustrated family including me, Suzzy stayed so calm and positive trying to turn the rough start around into an experience we wouldn't forget and that she did! I can't take stars off for this rocky start because she turned it around very quickly! We saw a huge sea turtle, an octopus, beautiful colored reefs, so many different fish. The water is literally crystal clear and the sand was so soft! After the tour she had a cooler full of the yummiest snacks including cold fresh pineapple, gold fish, granola bars, string cheese, waters and the best banana bread of your life! Suzzy wanted our experience to be nothing less than perfect and it was, you can tell she truly loves what she does. read more

My husband and I are not snorkeling beginners. We've snorkeled had a dozen times. Some of them were off boats, sometimes from a beach. I had pretty much sworn off of beach snorkeling due to a really bad experience 3 years ago, but snorkeling with Ed totally changed my mind. I was prepared to drive all the way to Kihei for this snorkeling tour, but was happily surprised that Ed came to us! We were staying in Kapalua Bay and we met Ed in a parking lot not even 10 minutes from our resort. In the parking lot you're fitted for your mask, flippers and wetsuit (more about this later.) Then we followed Ed to our snorkeling location. Ed spent 15-20 minutes talking about all the sea life we could encounter during and then we snorkeled. I'm not sure how long we were out there, but we definitely felt that we got our money's worth. Ed has a keen eye and pointed out a lot of things that we would've otherwise missed. I don't have the words to describe our private tour with Ed. There were four of us total and two of us were very nervous and one of us had significant mobility issues. Ed was compassionate and accommodating. We snorkeled off the shore and Ed educated us first about the fish and sea life we would see. He made sure we were comfortable and was patient. He helped tow two of us during the tour on a boogie board he had tied to him. I'm sure it was quite the workout for him. We snorkeled for a long time--well over an hour--and saw all of the fish and turtles he said we would. We did a private snorkeling tour with Toby and it was wonderful. Both me and my husband are not swimmers and Toby was really kind and patient with us. He made sure we are comfortable before taking us in deeper waters.We spotted so many varieties of fishes and sea turtles! Before going in the water he spent some time showing us the different fishes to expect which was really helpful as we spotted them once in water. He had snacks laid out after the snorkel trip and we had some great conversation. In all I would definitely recommend Toby and Maui Snorkel Tours. It was the highlight of our Maui trip. read more

I've been snorkeling a couple times (once in Hawaii and another time in Australia) and this was by far the best experience I've had. Ed was our tour guide and he was fantastic! He was so knowledgeable and thorough that our time with him flew by. We saw tons of fish, coral, and best of all, sea turtles. That was my main hope for this snorkel trip was to see sea turtles and Ed took us to a spot and totally delivered. We were hovering right above about 10 sea turtles just swimming with each other and hanging out. I was so close I was about an arm length or 2 away from one (of course not going to touch it but so cool that I was so close). I like that the group is small as well, we were with another family of 3 so only 5 of us total plus Ed. I felt like we got quality time and attention on this snorkel tour. If I return to Maui I'll definitely do this again (or recommend others do it to!) read more

This was hands-down everyone's winner for favorite activity in Maui, and we did not stint. We went rapelling, did a luau, more snorkeling off boats, boogie boarding, etc. It wasn't even a contest. I signed us up for this because I am deeply terrified of water. However, there is such an entire world under the waves that I just wanted to find a way to take a peek. Maui Snorkel seemed like a less threatening way - you slowly enter from the shore with a smaller group and more attention from your guide. They have boogie boards and floatation belts for the petrified ;-). Well, our guide Ed spent some time helping us pick out very nice equipment - showing us what makes for a good fit. Then, we went over some pictures of some of the families of fish we might see and the most common ones - turns out our guide took the pictures for the book he was using :O. Then we went in, and we did so at my comfort level, and a whole world opened up. It happened to be a great day for sea turtles, we couldn't have picked a better spot. The whole family had one of the most magical days of our life. And one of the nicest things of all? Ed dove down and took pictures and video of us from underwater and sent us a link to the dropbox after we got back home. So much better than any pictures I could have taken. read more

Our guide, Jeff Taylor, was super friendly, knowledgeable, a born story teller, very respectful of Maui's and the ocean's natural wonders, and a helluva cookie baker! My husband and I are not swimmers and have never been snorkeling before, however for our first trip to Maui we had to try it! We were skeptical of participating in one of the boat tours because it would be our first time and we would prefer close attention and instruction. We found Maui Snorkel Tours through Ann Fielding. I spoke with Paula and told her of our concerns and she told us everything would be personalized for me and my husband. Scheduling was easy and quick! Our instructor was Jeffrey. He arrived on time at our meet up point and took us to a wonderful place to snorkel. He provided us with detailed instruction, let us try on our snorkel gear before we even got into the water. He also provided us information on some of the wild life we would see in the water. He took us to shallow waters at first, had us try putting our face in the water and practice floating. I was terrified but Jeffrey was so patient and understanding and provided me with some techniques to get over my fears. Once we were comfortable he took us out into a little deeper water and explained all the fish we saw and was completely patient with us, never letting go out of board and making us feel extremely safe. We were in the water for awhile. Once out, he provided is with some delicious cookies and other snacks and shared with us a book of the fish we saw in the water and shared his stories of being on the island. I highly recommend Maui snorkel tours! They were awesome to work with and made our first snorkel experience truly memorable! read more
