I had great experiences patching tires a few times in 2022, but since then, with new management, things have changed completely. Went in twice past year and both times they've tried to upsell me on brakes, wheels, and even lugnuts. Even my mechanic was upset when I asked them about my car's condition and they wanted to know who was telling me this false information. Mavis will try to scare you that it's about safety. I suggest you measure your tire threads yourself with a coin so you know if tire folks are straight up lying to you, like this place did to me. read more

I took my car here to get an oil change. The following day, my oil light came on. I called them immediately, and the woman told me that chances are the technician forgot to reset the light and not to worry about it just to bring it in when I had time and they would reset it. As luck would have it a week later after driving with the oil light on and ignoring it, I got into my car one day and it wouldn't start. I checked the oil and it was bone dry I started to freak out and then decided to stay calm and put oil in and see if jumping the car would get it to start. It did and it turns out the battery died before the engine had a chance to seize from a lack of oil. Mavis took the oil out of my car and did not put anything back in. Do not take your car here. * in response to this businesses reply: It's not that I was treated poorly. In fact, the people that work there were very friendly. However, the technicians are inept and could've destroyed my car. So I don't care how nicely they treated me, they did a terrible job that could've ended up costing me my transportation and a lot of money. The fact that when I called, I was told I can keep driving it that it was simply the light that needed to be reset was the second example of them doing an awful job. Rather than reassuring me that it was fine to drive. They should've told me to bring it back in immediately. Had an oil change and tire rotation. Rotated tires and didn't put the lug nuts on the front drivers side tire and lowered the car and broke a lug nut. Also changed the oil and didn't put the pan under the car properly and raddled. Had to take my car elsewhere to repair the damage from Mavis. Do not take your car to Mavis! read more

They offered to do a tire inspection and then insisted on replacing even usable tires. They told me to change two tires, but when I said I would only replace one, they strongly persuaded me to change both. Be cautious, or you might end up paying a lot more than necessary. Had an oil change done & recommended something for next time so that was respectful instead of being pushy! Clean lady comes in on weekend to clean. Smells awesome when she leaves. They call you when their is an issue & when work is done. Promotions all the time. This visit I was eligible so we put in the work 3 hours total. Not bad brought a book ketchup on some reading. After taking my car to another mechanic who is an expert technician, I discovered my drum breaks were never readjusted, the pads were just slapped on which resulted in having to engage the brake pedal ALL the way down to the floor level just to get the car to slow down. I made an appointment for an oil change, left ma car and came back. I couldn't believe they charged my close to $70 for the oil change. Without discussion they used full synthetic oil. My car does not need synthetic oil but they decided to charge me as much as they could. Meanwhile, I also noticed that NOT one price was posted anywhere in the store. Several years ago when this store was known as STS, I went in for an oil change and a mechanic named Jimmy was using a drill to change the oil. I always wondered if they just thought of women as incredibly stupid and thought they could get away with whatever they wanted. Now they said I need brakes. Love shopping online for tires, make the appointment online, then drop off and get my truck back just as planned -- online! The guys here are also very nice. They do try to upsell you so be careful and forewarned. However, I expected it at a chain like this. Wound up taking my simple brake job to them here (four new rotors and two rear calipers). Their prices were not cheap, but they were not unreasonable. Again, they did the labor and the service was very nice. I will be taking my truck here for simple service (i.e. oil changes, brake pad replacements, etc.) when a mechanic is not necessary. read more

I'm a helpless buffoon when it comes to car maintenance. I can tell you when something goes wrong, but as far as fixing it goes? Psh, not on your life. And now that I live so far from my mechanic (aka: my brother), I'll drag my feet as long as humanly possible to avoid having to deal with a new service center. I needed a standard oil change a couple months ago and kept putting it off and putting it off until like magic, a coupon from STS came in the mail for a FREE oil change with the subtext reading, "Welcome to the neighborhood!" Too good to be true? Nope! They were super nice and took care of my car in no time, never even trying to upsell me on higher grade oils or filters like most places do. Having that positive taste already, when I got a flat tire they were the first place I thought of to get a patch done. I called them up to make sure they were open (holiday hours can make Highland Park seem like a ghost town), and they were just as friendly as I'd remembered, advising me to wait about 45 minutes before coming over since there were a few cars already waiting and one of the guys was out to lunch. Thanks for letting me hang out in my living room instead of your waiting area :) Unfortunately they weren't able to patch my tire because of the location of the puncture, but they gave me a small discount on a new one and had me out the door in under an hour. Only downside? They weren't as thorough as I would have liked (I think the air is lower in the old tires than the new one, meaning I'm going to have to do a little servicing on my own), but they were still personable, professional, and affordable. I had gone here once to patch a tire and the one guy was really helpful, $28 or so and I was happy. I figured after this one good experience I would go back for my oil change, $30 not bad. I was told 45 minutes well that turned into A LOT longer and I got a phone call saying that my oil was dirty and black, um hello but I'm not sure if you knew this already it's dark that's what oil is. He asked if I wanted it to be flushed and it would be $15, sure that's not a lot of money. When I got back he told me my total was $95! FOR WHAT!? Oh the flush was $59 not $15!?!? Are you kidding me!? I would NEVER EVER in my life pay that much money for something so stupid. I could spare $15 but it was ridiculous. I was furious and the guy had an accent so it was already hard enough to understand him. I will never ever ever go back to this place ever again. Rude. Incompetent. I love the people here. Friendly and HONEST! I had horrible issues with my Hyundai dealership TWICE, and then found STS. First, I had a window replaced and when I picked up my car, no one said to not use the window immediately. So I used it and eventually it stopped working. Made this terribly sad sound when going down and would get stuck. Dealership said they wouldn't even look at it without $90.00- this was weeks after I had the work done.....total BS! I took it to this STS and turned out the glue hadn't set and that's why window wasn't working properly. They took the door apart TWICE- First to diagnose, then to fix the window and charged me about $100.00. Much cheaper and much less hassle than the dealership. I stopped in here recently after another dealership nightmare where I needed some brake pads and wipers after a routine recall issue. Took car right from the dealership to STS and turned out the dealership left a hammer under the hood. STS did my brake service for so much less and I spoke to Frank, one of the mechanics, for about 20 minutes and he was great. Super honest, explained things as we stood by my car and took the time to point out maintenance steps in the future. I will always come here for routine oil changes and services. read more

Bought four tires there this year that included a warranty. Had those tires aligned. Got a flat in one of those tires and brought it in to be fixed. AND THEY TRIED TO TELL ME THAT "LOOKING AT THE CAR, IT SEEMS TO NEED AN ALIGNMENT." As soon as I pointed out that they had aligned the tires not three months earlier, they apologized for calling. BUT DID NOT APOLOGIZE FOR TRYING TO TELL ME I NEEDED A SERVICE THAT I CLEARLY DID NOT NEED. Will never go back and am now re-assessing every visit I have ever made there. read more

This review is only for the OIL CHANGE service they provide. I actually went to PepBoys in Edison and they were booked solid. The next available appointment was in two days. So I left and on the way home decided to try STS. Unlike the crowded PepBoys waiting room, there wasn't anyone there. I was in and out in 40 minutes. They gave me their promotional price of $24.95 (reg. $34.95) without having to ask for it! It also came with a courtesy check...but they were wrong about all my tires PSI...so I am not sure how accurate their check is... 5 stars if they keep their promotional rate and fix their courtesy checks... but all in all, I would go again, no other complaints. read more

Never go to this place. I went in for muffler issues and they fixed it. They also suggested I get two new tires. I asked for a quote on the tires thinking I would shop around a bit. I called 5 other places and they all have tire quotes significantly less expensive. That includes the install and other fees. So I took the car to a different garage to get the tires on and they explained how the way my muffler was installed was shocking. The new garage said they could tell it was all newly installed but felt it was done by someone with out any experience and it would all have to be replaced. So the new garage suggested I go back to STS auto and demand a real mechanic fix it. When I called to talk with the STS auto shop they were rude, constantly interrupting and explained it could have been from driving it and they are not responsible. Then the clerk put me on hold and the hold music talked about the 12 month guarantee on all parts. This was just installed 3 weeks ago and the clerk was acting like he would help with nothing so any guarantee from them is worthless. Overall they can't even help with a fair price on tires and that's in the company name so they are worthless. Stay far away. read more

I decided to try STS for an oil change and regular maintenance after I used them to fix a tire and the experience was great. The service on my car was done fast and the price was appropriate. While I was in the waiting room, a customer came in and was trying not to pay for work he had done. He was a very annoying customer. I was amazed at how well STS staff dealt with the customer. The STS employee (maybe assistant manager) was professional and patient while the customer was not. It is rare to see such great customer service. Way to go STS in Highland Park/Edison. read more

I went to the store in metuchen to have my car looked at, after my car was fixed my car started running weird so I called and they told me to bring my car in. Mike the manager at the store is oblivious on how to check transmission fluid and was basically unhelpful. I called corporate and they told me the Reginal Mgr would call me about my issue , when he did because I'm a woman he was totally condescending and was rude and abrupt. Not to mention he had to google my issue to give me an answer. Told me me would call me back and I never heard from him. 3 days later I'm still having an issue with my car and I'm dissatisfied with their service. I would never use this company to work on my car. DO NOT COME TO THIS STORE. I came in for 4 tire changes to prep for a long trip down south. Next day one tire was flat. According to them my "valve was leaking" and they insisted I didn't buy insurance on the tires. All I heard from them was if I wanted an extra $69.99 alignment. Now the store tells me to purchase insurance on four tires for $13.99 each so they will give me the tire for free. I got my "extra" charged tires now getting installed. And they are telling me my sensor is no good and can not find a valve for my particular car. So in order to get the sensor it's $69 for that cost. How can my sensor and valve be bad ? I was driving with no problem at all no flat no leak. Think about my experience before you enter this money sucking, unprofessional business. I called the store at the day of air leak and the employee there told me "oh well nothing I can do". Wow amazing customer service right ? That's not it. They are claiming to be chain stores but the truth is one store will not help you out because just is not done there. So really think about it before you spend more money on this... read more

This is probably the biggest scam auto shop I've ever encountered. I called ahead the day before and expressed I was in a time crunch and was promised to be seen at 8am on the dot and my brake service would take 20/30 mins. I came in, with my $80 coupon for brakes and labor. After waiting an hour to have my brakes "check" which they insisted on, they came back with a laundry list of things I needed done, totaling $350+. They stated a piece was broken on my brakes and that they couldn't do any repairs without fixing that. I left and went to another shop, turns out that piece was fine. And with just brake pads later, I was back on the road. They are not trust worthy, they get you in the door with the coupon then run the gambit on you. Go the Atlantic Tire on 35! Much better. Quicker. And more trustworthy. I will never use this shop. Ever. read more

I visited STS on a Saturday in March (it's now early April) and was helped by Ken. My car was taken into the bay promptly, the new tires were installed, and they ran an alignment check (this was free). The alignment check came back saying my car needed an adjustment. I was quoted a price of $50. I called Open Road Honda (where I get most of my mechanical work done), and they quoted my $80. So, I took STS up on the deal. I paid $150 per tire x 4, plus $16 per tire for installation, and $50 for the alignment. The employees here were helpful and friendly. The waiting area was meh. Ken told me to wait in the Dunkin' Donuts next door and grab a coffee or something for a more pleasant wait, which I did. I would recommend this place to a friend. read more

True story: I've been in to this location five times for one tire. The first time, I brought it in for a slow leak in one of the four tires I bought from Mavis. They told me they couldn't find the leak but they sealed the tire and said it shouldn't leak and graciously didn't charge me. A week later I brought it back for the same problem. They couldn't find the leak again and sealed the tire again and charged me for it this time. After a two week vacation, we came home to a flat tire. When I tried to remove the tire, I found one of the lugs was completely stripped. I called the store and they said there was nothing they could do and to have it towed in. I called AAA and they were able to get the lug off. I brought the car in, and again, they couldn't find a leak and suggested, "it might be the rim". I bought a new rim and brought the car back. This time they found the leak! They repaired it and mounted it back to the old rim. They wanted to charge me for this, and I politely declined. When I drove away, I had a tire pressure sensor fail. I brought he car back and they told me they didn't have time to fix it. I made an appointment for the next day and brought the car back. When I arrived I was told that they were full but they would try and get to it. They then admitted the last mechanic forgot to put the sensor back in. Five visits, eight hours waiting at the shop, a new lug nut and one useless rim. I will never take my vehicle back to this place and I have no hesitation telling others about my experience. read more

This was my second time going to this business. The first time I left because they were so rude to me when I first came in. This time I had a flat and didn't have much of a choice because I live right down the street. They were already busy first thing in the morning and the man at the counter acted like I was bothering him because I was next. Luckily I was able to drop my car off and come back later, otherwise I would have been there for hours. They literally didn't even call me I had to call them 4 hours later and he said "oh yeah they just finished up" whether that was true or not who really knows. It only cost about 17$ to get my tire plugged which is great. I was worried, though, because of all of the bad reviews I had read about one easy problem leading to another and another. I got away easy this time. Still not sure if I would go back because of the way their counter guy talks to customers. I was using this STS for quite long time but around year ago management completely changed. After that I was there around 3-4 times and no one time job was done properly. They loosing decorative parts (lost tire cup from my Lexus), cant set proper tension on belt (3 times!!!) And finally today made dent on my car when were changing the oil. AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE A PLAGUE! If you are happy to the hand over your credit card to be charged whatever they ask for and leave without saying a word,and you are always one of those super lucky people, go for it. Or if you ever have any questions/issues about the work done, like a lot of other people. DON'T GOT THERE EXTREMELY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL PEOPLE! THE STORE MANAGER (Ken?) WILL SCREAM AT YOU TO GET OUT OF HIS STORE! THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME. This happened on the day of 8-14-2010. To spare the details. I went in to install a broken mirror and when I picked up the car my door and window was broken(the same door where mirror was installed). They told me one story and would need to charge another $300 to fix it. The door panel wasn't even closed after being opened. When I asked for the regional manager(Who indicated I should have called the cops if that actually happened. I just wasn't prepare for that. Maybe I also should have worn helmet and bullet proof west before going to to repair shop?). Any way, another story was told. When my credit card company tried to get in the middle. Another different story was told. Obviously all the customer's fault. First I drove the car in as a set up with hidden problem. Then I requested the wrong service/part. .... Later simply saying everything was fine and I just called after I left the center to make trouble. Whatever it is, at least respect people's basic intelligence and keep it consistent? After all the troubles and weeks of back and forth. STS did fix the issue. But it has been a absolute nightmare for me. I am not a big guy but NO ONE has ever screamed at me like that, so close to my face my entire life. And I didn't say a single derogatory word the entire time.
