Had a starter replaced there when my truck wouldn't start near Mavis. Mavis way over-charged me. For the exact same rebuilt starter that auto stores sell for $175, I was charged $485 but they gave me $94 off - so it still was $391 (more than double). Also charged me $200 for labor when job took under 45 minutes. Was hoping for better. read more

A bad nightmare happened after our first night of our roadtrip vacation. My tire was flat! I had just filled the fires with air the day before. I googled tire shops by the hotel we were staying - luckily Horsehead is a pretty convenient town in terms of shops and stores. Mavis popped up and I spoke with a guy named Jon. Right away I could tell he's more on the thoughtful side. He told me not to drive on a flat tire because it would ruin the rim and tire. I told him I was able to inflate the tire back and it seems to be holding for now. He said to bring it in and they would check the tire for me. I explained it seemed to me like air was leaking out of the valve stem. Once there the tech put it on the lift and sprayed the tire down and checked for nails and leaks. Around the valve stem was fine but apparently the stem itself was loose. He used a tool to tighten it and voila... My problem was solved. Great attitude and helped me out big time and they didn't even charge me for their service! read more

Close to two weeks ago I took my car to Mavis for an annual inspection and four new tires. I was happy that it was so easy to schedule the appointment, but very displeased at the lack of quality service received. The gentleman at the desk was nice, but upon picking up my car I noticed that the tire pressure on all four NEW tires was high, and all different pressures (38, 36, 35, 36 moving clockwise from the front left). The pressures are all supposed to be 33 for my year/make/model (listed clearly on a sticker along the inside of the driver's door). This seems like a lazy oversight and sloppy mistake on behalf of the technicians, not to mention this could lead to uneven wear on the tread over time or a blown-out tire (dangerous). I had hoped they would even out, and decided to come back if they hadn't after a few days. I then noticed a scraping sound coming from under the car. This alarmed me since I commute for work and drive longer distances. I was able to get my car into a shop down the street from my house (not Mavis - I didn't trust them to diagnose anything if they weren't capable of ensuring that the pressure in brand-new tires was correct and the same). They let me know that it was a bent plate and mentioned that it most likely occurred when the new tires were installed (again, lazy/sloppy error on Mavis's part). Better quality control processes/dual checks could prevent this, maybe? I do NOT recommend this Mavis location, regardless of whether it saves a few dollars. I DO recommend that management strongly consider additional training of mechanics/technicians or better vetting during the initial hiring process. Their lack of attention to detail could lead to preventable damage to a customer's vehicle and/or injury were an accident to occur (a blown-out tire at high speeds on a highway, for example). This may help with customer retention in the future. read more

I made an Appointment at 10AM, dropped my car off at 9:50AM. The service counter stated that the tires recommended were not good. we proceeded to pick alternate tires. He states that it would take 1 hour. At the 2 hour mark, aI asked if there was an issue...a different service technician said yes there was .. the wrong size was selected vy the person who put in the order. It took 2 hiurs for you to update me??? they said it would be another 45 minutes. I asked for a discount for the terrible inconvenience and a mistake that was not mine... they have to ask the manager, who told me there was an issue....no extra charge for the correct tire..which is fine but I asked for another 10% off for the terrible inconvenience... still waiting to hear. I came in for an oil change and state inspection recently. Prior to arriving at the store, I had dropped my wife off at Barnes and Noble. When I arrived at Mavis, I jokingly informed the writer that the faster they get the work done on my vehicle, the better it would be for me. They had my car finished in about half an hour, which is a shockingly fast time for that amount of work. I thanked them profusely. Then I went to pick up my wife at the book store, and found that she hadn't had the chance to buy any books yet. We were able to walk out of that store for about half of what I expected she was going to spend there that day. So, I just wanted to thank that store once again for saving me so much time and money! read more

Sell crap tires then blame issues on bogus things. Said I had bad shocks thats why tires were no good. Took to 2 different garages and both said were fine but tires had broken belts. But the 20 something mgr with an associates in business and a 90 day training class apparently knows more than 2 mechanics with 65 yrs combined experience. Beware read more

This place is a joke..Took my car in for alighnment,,Took about an hour and half..Took it for a test drive and returned to have it checked again,alignment.. because steering wheel was not centered..Still not fixed..Receipt says checked brakes(not done),,says checked battery,(not done) The battery in my car is in the trunk..I watched them all the way..Only one mechanic appeared to know what he was doing..Takes 3 times as long that you are told..2 others returned with complaints while i was there..I've been there befor with about the same problems.This will be my last time..Firestone next time for me.. read more

I visited Mavis, after having spoken to 3 different auto repair stores including pep boys in New Jersey. With apprehension., I entered the place to be greeted by some pleasant gentlemen. I wanted to get my cars tires replaced with new ones after the reviews I got from previous workshops. Again because winter is setting in, I figured getting them replaced now would save colossal damage due to snow. I realized a tire store would fleece me and ask me to replace all four tires., and I was ready for it. Yes, ready to be robbed!To my delight, the service man at Mavis not only told me that my car was in good condition, but also suggested for me to wait another two months before running about replacing!!!! He also aligned the wheels of my car at a cheap cost, which other workshops had refused to do, because apparently my car has horrible wheels! So hurray to Mavis, lovely service and even better approach to a new customer. I know where I have to go when I need to get the tires changed! read more

Not sure why others had such a negative experience. Two years ago, my wife and I were Black Friday shopping in Elmira, NY. We stopped in the shopping center next to Mavis and as soon as we got out of the truck, we heard hissing. Saw we ran over a screw. Quickly we went to Mavis which was right next door before the tire went completely flat. The manage got us right in even though the store hadn't officially opened for the day yet. Patched the tire, and when I asked what I owed him, he said "no charge, Merry Christmas". Not that's the way you do it. Thank you, Mavis. You just gained a lifetime customer! read more

I have no complaints about the service or the personnel at this location but I AM frustrated with the Call Center who I did NOT know I was talking with when I called the number on line for this Horseheads location. I called yesterday and told them I wanted an appointment at Horseheads today at 4:00 but when I got here this location had no record of my appointment AND did not have the tires I was quoted a price for. SO needless to say I did not get in at 4:00 AND I ended up paying more for tires than I had wanted. To be fair the tires I got were somewhat better than I had been quoted but they also cost $80 more. I understand the purpose of a Call Center and its benefit to this location but in NO WAY should appointments be dropped or scheduled at the wrong location! This experience makes me skeptical about returning. read more

So after numerous calls and a couple emails I received a call back. He listened explained some things and gave me an offer to remedy some issues and my concerns over the sensors. I do appreciate the call back but I do wish it hadn't taken so much to get there. I honestly could have been told "I'm sorry for the confusion during your visit we will take the feedback as a training opportunity" and I'd have been fine. But once I started getting the complete opposite I had to escalate something. I hope no one else goes through a situation like mine. Don't worry though at least my tire didn't fall off and roll past me on the interstate (happened this paste weekend to a friend after having brakes replaced at another local chain) I'll update again after we go in for the things we were offered. read more

Visited mavis to have tires put on busted the lug off my tire and never told me then went back iimmy see a warranty on a hub assembly and to find out the sensor was never even put in right and just hanging in the air and of coarse the deny all of it then when replacing the warrenty hub assembly giving me a hard time about the warrenty after finally replacing it after sitting there for over four hours I pull out leave and I have a noise in the tire or part of the assembly in the tire or hook to something a noise I was hearing and they repeated to tell me nothing was wrong and they were not responsible for anything even though they are the only ones who touched that that front passenger hub assembly! I will never go back there!! Also I had asked about my awd disable light and was told it is the managers responsibility to buy the computer equipment to plug into my car to tell me what was keeping my dummy light on and he was not buying it cause it cost thousands ! What kind of mechanic shop does that really!! Wow I also purchased four brand new tires and three of the four would not hold air pressure and kept going flat after three visits and hours of arguing with him because I paid for the warrenty on the tires he was not going to honor the warrenty finally after several attempts and repeat visits he offered to give me new tires for half price with the warrenty!!! My review is actually for Dansville New York but I could not find it here so I am doing it in the Horseheads New York area. I have also dealt with Horseheads New York Mavis and they have been very good. I purchased Michelin tires that had a 90,000 mile tread warranty but they wore out after about 35,000 miles. I called New York State district manager Ray Marshall and he was very prompt and helpful with me. Ray returned two phone calls within minutes after I called. He also worked out a very fair deal on another set of tires. I refuse to buy Michelin again as this was the second set I purchased and they both wore out prematurely. Jody, one of the managers at Dansville New York was very helpful also. Ray Marshall is a top-notch guy and I'm very satisfied with the work that they've done. read more
