This was our first time at Max & Tilly's: Food: The fish & chips were fantastic. Maybe the best I've had in this area, and I've had them all. The fish itself was very fresh, with just the right amount of breading. Service: This is a counter-service type of restaurant, so service was fine for that type of setting. Orders are brought out to your table after ordering, on an aluminum tray. Ambiance: It's nicely decorated and everything is still brand new, but there were two things that could easily be improved: a) Considering the relatively high prices of everything, I would expect real fountain soft drinks with free refills, but instead, you get a can of soda and a glass of ice. ?!?!?!? The canned soda with no refills is inconsistent with the otherwise higher-end nature of this restaurant. Canned Coke is what I expect when I ask for a beverage at a food truck or when I'm at a carnival, not after I just dropped upwards of $30 for fish & chips and cole slaw. b) We arrived right at noon, with only one other customer there, and yet we were told that all soups were already "sold out". Not believable. It sounds more like someone forgot to order more soup ingredients, and/or they just didn't have anything heated-up. read more

I decided to order a glass of wine and have a scone as I waited for my friend to arrive. The staff that waited on me were very friendly and accommodating. The lemon curd that came with the scone was delicious. I was sad when the scone was gone and I still had a lot of curd leftover. For dinner, I ordered a small order of the fish and chips. It came with a large piece of fish and plenty of fries. I thought the fish had the perfect amount of breading. It wasn't overly greasy. I had also ordered hot tea. In true British fashion it was served with milk and sugar. The hot tea was very soothing and was a perfect addition to the meal. Overall, was very pleased with everything that I had. Very disappointed with our experience. We (party of 6) arrived at 7, and ordered by about 7:15; we were the only folks in the restaurant. The fish was good, the fries were soggy. The biggest negative was the total lack of service and decorum. Even though they were not supposed to close until 9 they started trying to get us to leave at 8 - loudly moving furniture again and again (screeeech), and then just standing in the dining room giving us the stink eye. We finally left around 8:20 and they locked the door immediately. We probably will not return. read more

Went here for lunch this week, and sadly forgot to take a pic. I LOVE fish and chips, but it's not always easy to find really GOOD fish and chips. You either get a really big order that you can't finish and doesn't reheat well, or it's just greasy. Not the case here! I ordered the small order, and it was PERFECT. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. Chips were great too! Slightly bigger, and definitely better than the old school Wendy's fries as far as how the potatoes are cut. Lots of flavor! I usually want my fish and chips with malt vinegar. I didn't ask, they didn't offer --and I didn't need it. The lemon wedge it was served with was just the right acidity. Tartar sauce also excellent! Was really wanting fish and chips so hopped over to Max and Tilly's to try theirs. Staff is very friendly and helpful. We did take out and glad we did because they were busy and all seats were occupied. Fish and chips were really good, I'd say they were 2nd best in the area. Excellent service. Went for lunch. A little loud so the gal at the register had to walk around it so we could hear each other. I can't eat fried food but I love fish. Ordered the lunch portion of cod and a cup of the soup of the day which I don't remember the name but it was leeks, carrots, chicken, celery broth. I would suggest to advertise the grilled fish option and add seasoning options: blackened, lemon pepper, old bay, dill butter etc. It needed seasoning and the soup needed seasoning as well. In response to the latest response: It seems that naming food after sentiments doesn't do well with your adverting. Sure, "Beefeater one word" may mean something to you personally, but what does it mean to the consumer? A little education and hopefully some restaurant experience will assist you there. Because it is in danger of appearing to be a bait & switch indeed. I am not going to attend an establishment and ask them for more meat when what I was given is being served to everyone. Are you implying that your portions are inconsistent? Or are you implying that you will only give an appropriate amount of toppings to those who ask? You should have a protocol and stick to it. Maybe reconsider the name of something none of your clients can relate with to something we can. Beefeater (with beef in the dish) should be a very obvious indication of what you're selling. I was about to pay $4.50 for a soda water and decided to give some of that drink money to your cashier. I would not have tipped at all if I had to buy the soda water. You sure seem to love making poor assumptions about people who are displeased. It is irresponsible of an establishment to insist that "visitors should ask for more beef toppings if they're dissatisfied instead of giving public criticism". People should know exactly what they're getting here and that was my intention. It's clear that you're unfit to receive real feedback. And it's clear you have zero desire to appeal to your clientele. Well now we have 2 restaurants in Fishers featuring English fare. I wasn't sure we even needed one, but Max and Tilly's has joined Cheeky Bastards, and I'm glad they are both here. Hard to review the newer MT without comparing it to CB. Fish and Chips: Crispy coating, a bit oily compared to CB. Perfectly cooked, flaky and hot. Needed sauce or vinegar (available) and salt. Chips were plentiful and served as a bed for the fish. Needed seasoning and the sea salt on the table was much too coarse to remain on the food. Fish portion is reasonable and a bit more than half of what you get at CB, (which I never finish) and $10 cheaper. My wife had the Beefeater which was chips drenched in shredded beef and juice/gravy. Very good! Again, needed salt. Ambiance not great. Few changes were made to decor of previous occupant: Green District, a salad place. Have to order at register! Price point much too high for no table service. Boo. And plating needs work. Food is served on a piece of wax paper in a metal pan. The paper is much too thin, gets soggy and rips if you cut the food. Don't enjoy pieces of paper in my food. Visited off hours and only one other couple in restaurant. Still, nobody came out to see how happy we were, or just to chat. New places especially need to do this. Beer and wine available. It's a cute, if slightly cold, place with solid food. We will probably return, but not in winter or in inclement weather as it's not easy to access the place from the parking lot. Bad design. Need a back door. read more

The food was awesome! My boyfriend and I tried this on a surprise date night. I was surprised by some of the reviews. It's a tad expensive but not too bad for what's around here in Fishers. I am gluten free and was blown away by the options! My boyfriend got the gluten free fish and chips and I got a gf sandwich. We shared. I had never been able to participate in fish and chips. It was so GOOD! I didn't think I'd like fish and chips and I was wrong. My boyfriend ended up loving my sandwich. It's a fun atmosphere. The staff were very kind and attentive. Max and Tilly's just opened and I saw an influencer post about it so I was intrigued to try it out! The shop was cute and the menu had a good selection. We ordered fish and chips and the Matilda sandwich, which were both delicious. They also had a small selection of pastries and packaged English products available. The service was good, though our wait time was a bit long. One downside was the cost of the meal. It was expensive relative to the amount of food we received. $18 for one fish filet and chips and $14 for a sandwich and crisps, no drinks, felt excessive, especially at a counter order restaurant. I'd also note that parking can be a challenge. The restaurant is attached to a garage, though parking on a Saturday night was tight and the garage was a bit confusing. Definitely worth checking out! But be prepared to spend a bit more than you might expect at a similar restaurant and smaller portions. read more

A few days ago we dined at Max & Tilly's after waiting with much anticipation, as big fans of Tilly's Tea Room. Initially we were a little thrown off that the restaurant is counter-service, but that is typical for a chip shop, so that was on us in terms of expectations. From there, most of our experience was good, but a little off. The interior is very industrial and almost a little sterile feeling, especially since the kitchen is open and much of the seating is right next to the food prep area - it just was a weird atmosphere to dine in, especially for the prices of food on the menu. It also seemed like the restaurant was a little short staffed, and the person who took our order at the counter was a little awkward as we looked over the menu and a few of the things we tried to order were not available, so it was frustrating to have to keep re-deciding what we wanted to try, and one of the things we ordered the chef came to tell us after we sat down that he had run out and we needed to pick something else, which also felt strange because we were on the early side of a typical dinner service. In the end, we got The Max (fish and chips with mushy peas, tartar sauce and gravy), The Beefeater (filthy fries with beef and horseradish sauce), and The HG Melt (baguette with ham, apple, Gruyère, mustard and raspberry preserves). The food was good. It came out one at a time, which was fine, but the fish arrived first and we were sat waiting for silverware for several minutes; this may have been a result of a staffing issue, because it did seem that only the chef was readily available in the restaurant the whole time. Once we got utensils and the rest of our food, we were pretty satisfied with the quality of food. The chips were a little different than what you may expect from a traditional chippy, but we still enjoyed it! The HG Melt was our favorite item we tried, and it doesn't get much more British than a stellar sandwich. We left with some mixed feelings, mostly given that the atmosphere, menu, prices, and level of service were at odds - almost like they needed a little bit more time in a "soft opening" phase. I write all this in the hope of giving honest feedback since this restaurant is still in early days of being open, and we would love to go back to try some of the menu items that weren't yet available, and to give this place a chance to iron out some wrinkles in the service experience! read more

We went in an a Thursday at 7pm and it was empty, not a good sign. We decided to give it a try anyway -- I ordered the Mediterranean Fish Sandwich because it was supposed to come on sun-dried tomato focaccia with an arugula salad on the side. The focaccia and arugula were the main selling points to me. Instead, it came on a regular white bun with a mixed green salad with a pretty meh dressing. This might be fine if they had let me know about the changes before I spent $17, and I would have ordered something different. Others in our group ordered fries and half were cold. Everything else was pretty mediocre, far too overpriced for what you get. I really wanted to like this new Fishers restaurant, but I won't be going back. read more

Went to Max & Tilly's for dinner and was pleasantly surprised because reviews on Yelp were hit and miss. I ordered large fish and chips and couldn't finish everything which is rare for me, being an above average sized guy. The fried fish was probably the best I've ever had. The hand cut fries were delicious, but a little salty. I took a bite of my wife's sandwich, Matilda, and it was unique in the best way, delicious. This restaurant is an order at the counter and sit down, then they bring your food. Service is friendly. For people who enjoy LOCAL, mom and pop restaurants, give Max & Tilly a try. read more

Awful. Sorry. The staff seemed friendly but the fish and chips were just plain awful and awfully plain, at that. You ever get that one old bite of batter from a previous order on your plate? You know, that one that looks a little too brown and a little too greasy but you eat it anyway? Then you regret it for the rest of the day until that burnt aftertaste finally dissipates? Yep, that's how their fish tasted. (Not trying to be mean, just honest) I've had fish and chips in England, in Ireland, in all kinds of restaurants & pubs in the US and this has got to be one of the worst that I've had. The first bite was just greasy & bland; by the time I finished, all I could taste is that burnt aftertaste. I tried to season it with salt but their shakers are the grinder kind which didn't really grind the salt pellets at all. The fries (or chips) weren't appetizing in the least. I don't know if I just happened to get a batch made after the lunch rush in oil that should have been changed or what; but I will not give them a second try - Especially when it's $18 for one piece of fish with chips. My kids were here from California and wanted to try something new. I told them about a new Fish 'n Chip's Shop, Max & Tilly's. They are big fans of authentic, British fish/chips and ordered the large Fish 'n Chips and devoured it! I don't think a crumb was left! Lol I ordered the Beefeater and really enjoyed it. My family was disappointed in our dinner experience, and we don't see any need to return, which is a shame because we were looking forward to going here. The ambiance needs a lot of help, as there is no character at all to the restaurant. Tables are arranged poorly, consisting of basic tables and chairs. If a modern vibe was the goal, then they have sadly missed the mark because even a Panera has more personality in their decor than this. Oddly there was also a bad smell throughout the room while we were there. I'm not sure if that is the norm or not, but it detracts from eating a meal. In regard to the setup, this is a walk up to the counter and order restaurant, which is perfectly fine. After you order, they bring your food and drinks to your table. Since there appeared to be only 3 people working when we were there, if you need something after your initial counter purchase, it's difficult because there is no one to come up to the counter to help you since they are busy cooking or back in the kitchen. Even getting a refill on water is difficult. Food wise, we all ordered the fish and chips. While the food look very pretty and a good quality cod seems to be used, the fried fish was pretty tasteless and the fries were soggy. For a price of about $24 for one order of fish and chips, the price did not match the quality of the food. Essentially the prices match a sit down restaurant, not a walk up counter with mediocre tasting food. It's a shame because we had high hopes for this restaurant, but I doubt it will last longer than a year. read more

Ordered the full order of Fish and Chips. My wife order the small Fish and chips. The food was Ok at best. The quantity was the problem. When the food was delivered to the table there was VERY little difference between the small order and the full order. When I questioned which one was the full order versus the small order? The manager gave us BS story about how it was all about weight. (The bread must have been really heavy! ) Needless to say first impressions are important.
