I'm always happy with the quality of the haircuts and the stylists and customer service of staff at the Navy Yard location. When everything runs smoothly, the experience is great and that's why I've continued coming back. I do want to offer a warning to others when planning a visit. On multiple occasions, I've made a reservation and received confirmation (which I can show), but when I arrived the reservation was not reflected correctly in their system. This has resulted in me being turned away more than once. I've remained a loyal customer through these issues, but it has become increasingly frustrating due to the time wasted, especially when planning my day around a scheduled appointment. The issue appears to be technological rather than staff related, but it's something others should be aware of so they can plan with fair warning. Sharing this out of respect for others' time and with the hope that the booking system issues get resolved. read more

Unlike previous reviews, I had a good experience there today. I was in town from Omaha and could not get in to see my regular Scissors & Scotch stylist, so I made a last-minute appointment for a cut. I showed 18 minutes early, had my drink, and my haircut began on time. Charity cut my hair and did a great job. The scheduled 15-year cut I got was just a 10-year but I did not make that connection until I'd left. The bar has the least amount of whiskey options of any S&S that I've visited (I've been to 4 locations.) read more

I loved being a member, but they seem unable to keep to their appointment schedules (the last 4-5 times I have been I waited 30-45 minutes for an appointment that I had booked in advance). Each barber I've had has been great but there isn't any consistency on what they consider an "upkeep." Between the chaos of scheduling and mixed messages on what's included, I just didn't find it worth it to keep my membership. I left one star because the barbers usually do a good job, and second star because they're pretty nice. But all in all, you're better off finding a long term barber somewhere else more reliable. read more

Believe the bad reviews!!! I made an appointment for my son mostly because it's a couple blocks away from where he lives. I made an appointment for a full service haircut and style, shampoo and conditioning treatment (45 min) for $58 and also the facial hair trim which it says shapes the beard with electric trimmers (15 minutes) $32. There was no conditioning treatment for the hair. The hair cut wasn't bad but they didn't even it up in the back. In addition, you can see how my son's neck looks. When I asked them to clean it up they said that would involve a razor and would cost me more. He's had his beard trimmed dozens of times with the electric trimmer and it has always looked nice and neat. The whole affair took 15 minutes. It was $97 for this terrible mess and yes, I know this is DC, but still, that's a lot of money. All in all, a terrible place. read more

Comically bad. So bad I am making my first-ever yelp review about it. Experienced similar horrors to other recent reviews (30 minute delay, overpriced service, etc), but 90% of my complaints wouldn't matter if the end result was still a decent haircut. This was hands down the worst haircut I've had in a decade, which included cut skin, uneven neckline, sideburns cut at such different lengths you'd think they were on two different heads, and a gross deviation from what I felt was a simple haircut request. Add on top of that just a horrible customer experience -- I got to enjoy hot water sprayed directly into my ear for several seconds, watching my stylist realize the uncleanliness of tools (multiple times) and clean them in real time, and just a general unpleasantness that permeated the 75 minutes I spent in there. At the end of the day, I'm not sure if the business that is just awful top-to-bottom, or myself for failing to heed the many negative reviews, is more at fault for this terrible experience. To any potential customers - you'd be better served sticking your head in a blender than patronizing this establishment. read more

I don't know who you have working the front desk - but he's costing you money! I checked in at 3 pm for a 3:30 appointment. At 3:15 I moved from one of the chairs to the bar to get a drink. The guy didn't remember checking me in 15 minutes prior. I asked him to make me an old fashioned after someone who came in after me ordered one and I said "can you please make that two... he the questioned who I was and whether or not I'd already been seen. He asked and looked up my name again. Made me my drink and went back to the desk. At 3:45 I went to use the men's room and came back to sit at a different bar stool (because someone else had taken m my seat and ordered a drink already). He asked me if I wanted anything - at this point it's 4:00pm. I told him this was the third time he'd forgotten about me and that I just wanted to pay for my drink and I'd be on my way - he said "I'm working up here and not back there - you're drink is on the house." I left - no apologies for any late reply or mistake. I usually come in for a cut when I'm in town - never again. read more

It's ok for the price when you consider the free "upkeep" service between haircuts, but ultimately I'd rather pay a bit more for a better cut with no drink or support a local barber shop and pay much less. Ultimately the service level was inconsistent I'd get some pretty good cuts, but then I got a few crap ones as well. More importantly my guy didn't listen. He just cut my hair pretty much however he wanted. I don't think these are lifelong hairstylist. And the bartenders, or whatever, have the personality of a pint glass. The whole execution is a bit gimmicky and I kinda felt like I was getting my haircut at a Dave & Buster's. i've gotten really good cuts at actual shops that have a small bar attached. I'm a member at S&S, and I love it here! I always go to Deyon, who does a great job. A few things to know: -You can get an individual haircut service, of course, but the membership is a better value if you want to get a cut every few weeks. I have the every three weeks plan. I'll detail how the plans and everything work below. -There are four flavors of haircut: The Buzz Cut, 10 Year, 15 Year, and 25 Year. I'm on the 10 Year plan, which includes a full haircut, shampoo and conditioning, hot towel, and back of the neck shave. If you want more of a pampering experience, the 15 Year adds a scalp massage and face refresher, and then there's the top of the line 25 Year, which adds a paraffin wax hand dip and scalp/back/shoulder massage. I got the 25 Year once and it is really nice! Kind of like a spa experience. There's also the Buzz Cut, which is pretty much what it sounds like. -The Bar: Yes, there is an actual bar here--not like a few cocktails, but a bar. They have a great drink menu, and obviously given the name of the place, there is a focus on scotch and whiskey. I've enjoyed trying all sorts of different whiskeys and bourbons, and I try to get a different drink each time. The memberships include a cocktail with every service. There are currently 19 cocktails on the menu, and the bar tram will also make you a custom drink if you want (highly recommended). -In between: In between services, which are offered every 2, 3, or 4 weeks depending on your membership, you also get unlimited cleanups/edge ups. This is a perfect quick little service when you want to get your hairline right but don't really need a full haircut. I normally get a cleanup every week and a half. -The staff: Everyone is super cool, from Shawn at the front to everyone cutting. -Pandemic precautions: The bar seating is closed due to the pandemic, and they enforce social distancing in the bar table area. I am fully vaccinated and feel very comfortable here. If you're looking for the cheapest haircut in town, this isn't it, but that's not what it's trying to be. I value the online appointments because of my schedule, and they even have an app. I pretty much have subscriptions to everything else in my life, so the membership was an easy option. I'll admit I was skeptical at first. The entire concept didn't appeal to me as someone with kinky, curly hair. I figured I'd try it out because it's down the street from me and I'm happy I was wrong. The have a good set of barbers, nice and diverse, that can cut and style any type of hair. MEN'S CURLY HAIRSTYLE APPROVED! Sent my husband here to get pampered for his 30th birthday. Drinks were DELICIOUS (one of the best mules I've had in a long time), bartender and staff were all lovely. My husband has curly hair and we were nervous about finding a stylist who has experience with long curly hair (this is the first haircut he's had since growing his hair out for the first time) and they did a phenomenal job. Short version: Business model too inflexible for some individual needs. Staff was late, impatient, and a bit rude. Cut was fine. Cost was super high. I'm a baldy so my hair is super easy to cut - just buzz at the closest setting. Takes about 10 min. Same with my face. 20-30 min max total and easy breezy - almost no skill required. Usually pay $15-$40 depending on the barber, plus tip. Wanted to try S&S cuz I liked the concept. Made appt on web site for 45-60 minute service for $58 that included shampoo, haircut, and other elements. Showed up on time and explained what I needed. Argument ensures that what I wanted was two services and they would only have time for the buzz cut not the electric shave. I assured them that they would be done in half the time allotted. Host annoyed but sends me back 13 minutes late. Cut and shave takes 22 minutes. Nice job - no issues. Price was $73 "because it was two services." I noted my two services took half the time of the one I booked. Could they just charge me that price? Host told me to told me to take it up with Corporate while waving their hand for me to leave. The haircut I received was alright but didn't feel particularly special or worth the premium price. The environment is very trendy and the staff members were friendly and professional. I been at the S&S in Franklin TN. Not a bad place. However, I attempted to purchase a Gift Card for a nephew in the past few days. I cant get to the salon, and was advised to use the website... three days later and 4 attempts at using the online system, still leaves me without the Gift card. Despite making appointments for specific times, I have waited on 6 different occasions in the past year for my barber--each time for more than 30-45 mins. I have never complained and always tipped generously bc I know the job is hard. But tonight was simply unacceptable. Earlier today the shop texted me to confirm my 6:15 pm appointment. I responded "yes," and they responded "got you." Then, about 30 mins before my appointment the front desk attendant (Kollin) texted me to say my stylist was running "20 mins behind." I replied "ok, thanks," confirming that I received the message and would arrive accordingly. When I got there, Kollin told me that my stylist had already left for the day bc he "didn't know if I was coming." I was shocked. I told him I literally confirmed twice that day, both that I was coming and then that I would arrive at a later time to accommodate my stylist and didn't understand the claim that the stylist "didn't know if I was coming." Given that Kollin said the stylist had just left, I asked whether he could call him and let him know I was there so we could possibly catch him before he got too far. Kollin responded "I don't have the authority to make him come back." I replied "that's not what I asked. I just asked you to call to let him know I'm here." Kollin refused but said he would text him and see if he'd respond. After about 10 minutes, Kollin told me the stylist hadn't responded and suggested I wouldn't be seen. At no time was there an apology--let alone a rational or credible explanation--or an offer (or even a suggestion as to how) to make things right somehow. I asked for a manager and was told no manager was present and that I could try calling "Niki" (Kollin claimed he didn't know her last name) tomorrow. I should add this S&S location is almost a mile from my home and it was 28 degrees, with a windchill of 5 degrees. I waited a few more minutes and then left and walked home at 7 pm, having done a 2 mile round trip in the freezing cold for nothing. Considering 1) how many times I've patiently endured length waits for my stylist, and 2) how expensive haircuts are at S&S ($58 for a no frills haircut; they claim to offer a luxury experience), being treated this way is unprofessional and insulting. I recommend everyone avoid S&S. You can get better treatment at a more reasonable price at many other (non-chain) local competitors. read more

I called to let them know I was running 10 minutes late, and they refused to accommodate the appointment, accusing me of "cheating the reservation system". what does that even mean? I went online and booked an appointment for the first time, and that was considered "cheating the system". All I needed was a #2 trim and a scissor clean up on top, and they kept going on about all of the time they need for a "consultation" and all of this other nonsense, way over complicated a very simple request, and in the process told me I "booked the appointment wrong". Asked for a taper. Got a "fade". Should be called a step or line straight across, there was zero fade. Hands down the worst haircut I've ever gotten in my entire life. I understand I have curly ethnic hair that may be difficult to cut but not being able to give a proper fade let alone a beard trim and line up is ridiculous. To make it even worse they charge you 38 dollars!! I decided on purchasing a ten-year membership after a few one-off haircuts and haven't looked back. Outside of a few one-offs when he was out - all of whom did a phenomenal job (thanks Deyon, Lareesa and Dan!) - I began working exclusively with Joe. I like to stay loyal with barbers and once I find someone I can consistently work with, I stay true to that person. Joe truly makes the ten-year membership worthwhile! He is precise with his razor & fade work and his friendly demeanor made it a no-brainer to continue to work with him. His upkeeps are fantastic as he keeps my shape up and hard-part crisp every week. His monthly ten-year cut is pristine! And it is precisely why I continue to give Joe and the shop my business. Joe is the reason I have a membership with Scissors & Scotch and I'm not sure I would have one if it wasn't for him. He keeps me coming back each week! Chris and Amonie are also very welcoming and keep the place pleasant and enjoyable. While I try to keep my drinking to a minimum nowadays, they can fire up a mean cocktail when I do take advantage of the complementary drink! They're also kind enough to work out the schedule when things need to be updated. They all work together to make the experience a tremendously positive one and assuming nothing changes, there is no doubt in my mind that I will continue to be a patron at Scissors & Scotch. When I got here they told me they were at capacity...totally get it. No worries. THREE people left and they still wouldn't let me in. I was standing by the door so I know they saw me and no one else came in. My fiancé was getting his hair cut for all of 20 mins. Lucky me got to stand outside in the 40 degree weather getting cat called. They don't value people at all. And his hair cut could of been done at Walmart for $13. I did not want to leave a review online, but there is no way to directly contact the shop corporate office. My review applies to the Reston,VA location only. I have a few complaints on behalf of my husband. First, the front office or booking staff needs to stop acting like they are doing you a favor by booking an appointment. They are advertised as an upscale barber and the service staff should reflect that in their attitude towards customers. Second, they need to vet their staff for skills that match the quality expected. My husband has been twice now, and both times they messed up a part of his hair. The first time he went they shaved one of his eyebrows almost off to wear one looked completely different than the other.. When he inquired the staff said that "that's his standard." First of all, a basic hair cut place will ask you what you want before doing something. Second, it should look even. I had to even put his eyebrows so he didn't look like mr potato head was missing a part. I also had to fix the fade on the sides and around the ear. The next time he went he got someone different, who didn't know how to do the barber part, just the haircut. She even admitted this. I'm sorry, but isn't this a barber shop? She did a bad job because when he came come I had to shave all around to clean up the hair she missed. She also almost cut his mole off on the back of his neck because she wasn't paying attention and it was bleeding and they had to treat it. If I'm paying $58 + 20% tip for a haircut, I expect it to look like I paid that much. This franchise needs to up its game if it is going to bring in the clients that are willing to pay that much and expect the righty quality. Disappointed immensely so far and I was looking forward to him liking this place because it's close to us and the interior looks masculine and modern. But the company should focus on quality first of their service, then worry about the frills. We will be trying other locations since they haven't hired quality staff yet. read more

You're paying for ambiance not a haircut...S&S is more focused on creating an "atmosphere" than providing service. I had a new barber so I gave very clear instructions: "do not let me see any skin" he replied by giving me a fade to zero. That cost $100. I do not recommend coming here. read more

**Front desk employee drugged out** Checked in 10 minutes early for my 7pm appointment and the front desk employee was just crying and never said a word to me, just pointed for me to sit after I gave him my name. 10 minutes later, he was cat walking back and forth in the lobby and dancing, which I just ignored, until he sat next to me and stared for a few seconds before leaning over with his hands on the coffee table directly in my face and just kept staring. He did this one more time after dancing again and finally sat back at his desk. I was extremely uncomfortable and had no idea who to talk to since he was the only employee in the lobby. At about 7:30 a hairstylist walked out and I asked when my appointment was and the front desk guy couldn't find it. Apparently he had never checked me nor was sober enough to find me. I have tried to contact other branches/corporate for help but with no luck. I finally got my membership cancelled and will never be going back. read more

Review for bar only. Stopped in one afternoon to check out the place and have a drink. Appreciating that we're still distanced due to COVID, I wasn't very impressed with the atmosphere. You can't sit at the bar at all, you're relegated to tables. Unfortunately, that's the problem-- why are there tables instead of comfy chairs or couches? The whole point is to relax and the seating is like a Five Guys. Also, the space is sleek with high windows that allow the inside to bake-- the AC needs to be running, I can only imagine how brutal the space will feel come summer. On the plus side, the expensive old fashioned was excellent, and my bartender was wonderfully pleasant. I'll try out a haircut in coming weeks but as a bar it's not inviting. I went online schedule appointment for traditional beard grooming (straight razor).Moved my schedule around to accommodate the slot they had available. I get text some time later asking me move appointment up 15 mins , no big deal IM flexible easy going . about 1 or so be for the appointment I get call from someone at shop putting me on the back burning to accodamate FOR; what I assume IS more lucrative or perhaps regular customer who clearly booked after me .
