After getting breakfast just even a couple of times here, the difference family members already know my name and ask which of my regulars do I want. Comfy chairs and benches make this coffee shop the perfect place to hang out with friends, enjoy yummy baked goods/ breakfast sandwiches and of course a fantastic selection of warm and cold beverages. Every time I come to visit, I stay nearby, and somehow I'd never stopped into maxfields House of Caffeine until recently. Now I'm wondering why I waited so long! This place is such a convenient little neighborhood café. They have all the breakfast staples, and I ordered a breakfast bagel sandwich that really hit the spot. I also tried their Vietnamese coffee, and it was fantastic--rich, smooth, and exactly what I needed to start the day. My cousin ordered a cream cheese bagel, and let's just say they are very generous with the cream cheese. It was stacked so high that it was a little overwhelming, but if you're a cream cheese lover, you'll probably be thrilled! The atmosphere is one of my favorite parts. It's a great place to grab breakfast, sip a coffee, and get some work done. Once you make a purchase, they'll give you the Wi-Fi password, and there were plenty of people working or just relaxing while we were there. They also have donuts and a variety of sandwiches. I'm already planning to come back and try the turkey pesto sandwich. The customer service was friendly, the coffee was excellent, and the overall vibe was welcoming. My favorite coffee shop! I come here weekly since I work around the corner and I order a lot of different things on the menu. The people that work here are always friendly, especially Tiffany. Their prices are more affordable than most other coffee shops in the city. They have lots of seating and it's pretty quiet. Many people come here to work. My favorite thing on the menu is the Avocado Sandwich. I'm not a big veggie sandwich person but their Avocado Sandwich has everything I love- sprouts, cheese, red onion and more...sooo good. I also love the Breakfast Sandwich too. You can chose the type of bread for all the sandwiches. They have wheat, french roll, dutch crunch, croissant or a bagel. A bagel with cream cheese is less than $6, as it should be. They have a lot of options for drinks but I like their Chai Latte and Matcha Latte. read more

I asked for 10 shots of espresso in my latte but I feel like they only gave me 5 because it's not strong as I use to and they started speaking in another language and she showed the other lady the cup as in to say is that enough. Just the name of this place alone already tells me that my tired old self (from binge-watching the night before) tells me that caffeine is the way to get my brain (and sanity) back to full-on work mode. This takes me to the heart of the Mission District in one of the most coffee-friendly cities in the world and that is none other than San Francisco. Which is where I stopped by to check out "Maxfield's House of Caffeine". Geographically speaking, this place has a lot going for it; you've got #1 park to see and be seen with Mission Dolores Park. You've also got the most beautifully designed churches with Mission Dolores Basilica. And of course you have the hipster vibes, cool art scene, and progressive liberals that call this place their home. Maxfield's is conveniently located on Dolores St. and at the corner of 17th St. Due to the close proximity to the park, church, and other major attractions, parking can be very challenging to find. I recommend taking Muni or rideshare. But it is best to get here by foot or bike. I arrived during the afternoon of Sunday 4/2/2023 at around 12:35pm. Since I had already gotten caffeinated a couple hours prior to coming here, I did not try one of their coffee drinks. However, I did order one of their Italian sodas in the cherry flavor. This was as simple of a drink as possible with club soda and cherry syrup. However, this place does offer a nice assortment of drip coffee, cold brews, espresso drinks, hot cocoa, smoothies, teas, and to those that one an extra kick, a 'depth charge' which is essentially a shot of espresso. And of course the food menu which includes several different breakfast bagels and a variety of sandwiches. The pastry case is also quite impressive and I was able to capture quite a few photos of the food even though a sign said "no phones allowed". This included a ton of fresh loaf cakes, cookies, muffins, and biscotti. I went with a piece of their coffee cake which was in reality big enough to fill up two people. It was moist but a little too much on the sweet side. And as for my cherry Italian soda, that too was sweet but I could tolerate it once the ice helped water it down a bit. As far as the interior layout of this place, it is rather spacious and open for a coffee shop. From the time I was there, many people were working/studying on their laptops while others were just enjoying a relaxing Sunday. The Wi-Fi speeds are decent but not lightning quick like other places. There is a fair amount of seating as well as generous outdoor seating which I am sure many businesses adopted once the pandemic adjusted the way many small businesses operated. All in all, "Maxfield's House of Caffeine" is a decent no-frills hole-in-the-wall in the Mission; decent service, a nice variety, and a chill atmosphere. The workers were kind and pointed me to the free wifi when I had asked. There were plenty of plugs and it was a nice quiet place to work. It's got a great ambiance - super casual neighborhood spot with a lot of what looked like regulars just in there on their daily routine, minding their own business. The order: the Breakfast Bagel (except on a Dutch Crunch roll) with a Sausage Patty, Cheddar cheese, and a fluffy steamed egg. Pretty decent portion, on a perfectly soft yet crunchy roll. Believe it or not, I just became a coffee person this year(thank god it's not more than one cup every few days). Once I started working out in the area I needed a good place that had some strong coffee to keep me going through my day. I walked in and looked at their vast menu and one thing caught my eye. Vietnamese Iced coffee. One of my favorite styles of coffee. It was instantly a wrap. This was my go to cafe near 16th St. For coffee I recommend Vietnamese Iced Coffee. For food, any of their sandwiches and bagels are really bomb (they're very generous with cream cheese and spreads). For sandwiches, get a club sandwich and for bagels, get a cheese bagel with sun dried tomato spread or a Loc bagel sandwich. Bomb. All in all, great vibes, great people, great coffee and food. I've been coming to maxfields since I moved to the neighborhood in 2009. I moved to Oakland in 2014 and socal in 2020. I still come back and love everything that it is, because of everything that it isn't. If you want upscale, fancy, expensive and soulless coffee go to literally any other coffee shop in SF. This place is perfect in its simplicity and care that go into the classic food & coffee - a truly rare find in a city that prices out virtually every family owned business in the mission. Service is friendly and amazing. Running a biz in SF is complicated and very much like being on an island - there's something beautiful happening here. read more

So disappointing. I think they gave up. I went in the past week. I was hoping to get a drink and sandwich and sit inside to do some work. The cafe was empty and there were two employees working. When I walked up to the counter it took the two lady's a few minutes to greet me. They seemed to busy talking with each other and doing tasks. Once I was able to order I asked if I could sit inside. They said "NO, ONLY OUTSIDE". Not sure why the rudeness and yelling. I understand we're in the final stages of a pandemic. But this cafe is huge. They could space out tables 12' apart and still they could fit 20 people. Not to mention the doors and windows are always open for airflow. I'd expect this 6 months ago, but nit now. I ended up sitting outside for a couple hours. During that time I think 2 people went in, and one didn't buy anything. My cold brew coffee was bitter. I'd guess based on how busy they are it's a few weeks old. They are also closing now at 3pm. Why so early??? Perhaps if they followed the city rules they could stay open later, pay the bills, and bring this place back to life. I think the owners have given up, so should you. This is a great little spot on the corner w/decent outside tables. Pretty quiet neighborhood. When you 1st walk in, it's so clean and tidy. Because of a HUGE plastic coverlet in front of the register and the glare, it's a bit difficult to read the menu. (My bad on this one). I needed a quick breakfast pick me up. So I just ordered a Bagel w/cheese bacon and egg, toasted and to go. And a small coffee in a Med. cup (I like lots of room for cream). When the gal told me it was $13.00, I honestly about fainted. I though, dang that Bagel sandwich must be gold. I had the gal point out the item on the menu, yep, $9.75, again, my bad for not looking more closely @ the menu. The sandwich was hot, bagel buttered, cheese melted, 1 slice of bacon, o.k., but pretty flavorless. Coffee was horrible. Guess what I'm saying is skip the coffee and be sure you read the menu thoroughly for the prices, before you order. read more

LOX BAGEL - this place makes a mean one. Smoked salmon & cream cheese & carbs are always a good idea though. (For the record, there were also red onions & tomatoes. Yum!) Anyway, I stopped in here on the way to meet some friends at Dolores (super close walk!) I got my friend a chocolate croissant- it was HUGE. They also have an assortment of tea bags to choose from here & they serve it quite hot, which is noce so your tea isn't cold once you get to the park. The ladies working here were super nice as well, they went the extra mile to make sure they got everyone's order correct! There is a glumness in the service to be experienced at Maxfield's, and one can only surmise there have been a lot of caffeine-fueled battles over the availability of free WiFi which have left the servers shell-shocked and unable to break a smile to neophyte visitors like myself. That's too bad because I like the space here, a casual hipster/thrift-shop gallery vibe with plenty of tables for long-term laptoppers in need of self-absorption (see photos). Of course that's probably part of the problem since the owners probably need to use a well-greased spatula to get some of them to get out of their chairs, and considering their five o'clock shadows, I don't believe personal hygiene is a priority for them. And I'm just talking about the women. Proximity to Dolores Park, the Castro and the Mission make this an attractive spot for a caffeine pick-me-up, and prices appear to be in the standardized Starbucks range, for example, $1.95 for a large coffee. It was nothing that would keep Phil up at night, but it did keep me upright for the short walk to the park. Perhaps to their chagrin, they also serve food here beyond the predictable selection of pastries - quiches, piroshkis, four sandwiches, a slice of spanikopita and a soup de jour. All appear reasonably priced in case you want to hold a marathon blogging session. I've been reading about a singing barista, but there was nary a peep from the staff when I was there, just the hyped-up keyboard tapping you would expect in a designated house of caffeine. COFFEE - 3 stars...standard cup of joe with standard pricing AMBIANCE - 4 stars...a potentially cool space, but the populace hardly moves SERVICE - 2 stars...pretty surly...should I take it personally? I've watched these girls run customers off because they 'broke some rule' but the only problem is that the rules are in their head so its hard to figure out what rule you're actually disobeying. Brutally direct and they dont hesitate telling paying-customers off. It's entertaining AF and why I frequent this business. Pro-tips for fellow watchers: 1. Dont make eye contact while they are finishing their personal conversation before they take your order. 2. Don't bring in trash from your car for disposal. If the napkins wasnt provided at this business, dont dispose of it here. 3. Don't ask questions and know what you want when you are at the counter. 4. Order at least $12 worth to be allowed to sit inside. 5. This one is a maybe but I think they don't like people using the bathroom. I get mean looks after. 6. They are very selective and inconsistent. Don't be disappointed if they make exceptions to some and not others. I get to witness at least one incident per 2-hour session. The unpredictability is what makes it fun. Once in a while, I'll break a rule on my way out. Its very empowering that I can crumble someone's zen with a single meaningless act. read more

Worst coffee shop in San Francisco. Just read the rest of the reviews, and do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. I walked in there today and got harassed by the three women working because I brought in an empty cup of coffee to throw away. When I walked in they started giving me attitude for holding another cup of coffee, which I then immediately threw away AND ordered their coffee. About an hour later on my way out of the bathroom, I asked the lady that served me if I had done something wrong because I didn't feel welcomed. She told me she was being rude because I brought in another cup. I said I was sorry, that this was my first time here, and that I threw the cup immediately, and ordered another one from them. The woman I was talking to walks away from me, the two other women get involved and tell me to "get the fuck out of there" for not understanding that I shouldn't have walked in with another cup of coffee. WHAT???? Yes, this was all because I walked in with another cup of coffee. I've never felt more disrespected and confused. If you're looking for a nice morning coffee without any harassment, find somewhere else to go. read more

It takes a lot for me to leave a review on Yelp but what happened to my girlfriend and I in here was just unacceptable. Not sure if the lady that took my girlfriend's order was the owner or not but she told us we couldn't sit inside after we just ordered. She said we didn't order enough to sit inside, but looking around there were people in there with just a cup of coffee. We even showed proof of our vaccination. The coffee is meh. The food is meh. But the location can't be beat. You'll be hard pressed to find another nearby cafe with the exception of the Church Street Cafe where you can actually sit down and read, do work, etc. I mean, try reading in the dark at Stanza Cafe, or dealing with the noise/rush/day-parking hordes at Dolores Park Cafe, or avoiding suicidal thoughts in a tech-modern cafe like Verve. A lot of other commenters have called the staff here rude. They are not. It's just that they don't have the gushy American lovey-dovey approach to strangers: "Ooo, like, I've never seen you before, but let me give you a big welcome and a hug and tell you my life story!!!" (I think all except the morning staff are from China.) Plus, there can be a little bit of a language barrier at some times. If you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you. Just remember: They're selling you coffee, not proposing marriage. Yes, the specialty-coffee and prepared food service can be slow, particularly when there's one person behind the counter early in the morning. Best to look elsewhere at those times, I think. Also, avoid Maxfield's on Saturdays before mid-afternoon. In the past couple of years they've been completely taken over every Saturday morning by a large older men's meetup group. Which is great, but with 40-50 people in this group taking all the tables, you will not be able to sit anywhere. read more

I do love their art - the Hanna Barbera cartoon character paintings they had for sale. Beer and wine are available. * Veggie bagel: Like that it had plenty of fresh veggies. * Coffee: Not bad, not great. The latte wasn't rich but it wasn't bitter either. There was no foam art. To access the free wi-fi ask for the password at the counter. There are ample power outlets and it's a pretty quiet place where you're likely to find a laptop camper. I like the high ceilings. Such a rude and unprofessional customer service. I was there couple days ago with my friend. My friend bought a sandwich and we shared that together and then opened our laptops to work. The woman who was working there came to me after a while and asked me if I don't wanna buy anything from them in a very rude and unpleasant way. I told her we are together and my friend bought something and we shared. Then she said your friend did and why you don't buy. I explained for her again that we are together and we just needed one sandwich to share cause I'm not that much hungry . And I told her that's so weird. Very disappointing. I tried two items at this spot: Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie - not good at all: dry, somewhat flavorless and no real taste of chocolate. Usually when I buy something, I'll still finish it, but it really wasn't worth the calories. Thai Iced Tea - another disappointment...it had the basic flavor one would expect, but it definitely wasn't sweet enough...it really tasted like tea with some cream. This place is pretty big and with the tall ceilings, it makes it seem even bigger. When you first walk in here, you feel like you're stepping back in time to 1991, when most coffee houses looked like this...it just doesn't work for what's current in San Francisco. There is some outdoor seating, which is nice on a sunny and warm day. Everything was alright with this place. It doesn't really stand out in my eyes. Coffee is a bit weak. I actually got sleepy while sipping my coffee. Outdoor seating is comfy, especially under the tree, although you'll get tree stuff falling on you all the time. Still much better than the indoor seating because it gets really hot inside, and KL said it smells like BBQ chicken. And it's full of apple snobs. I think KL and I are the only ones with dell laptops there. I didn't get a friendly vibe from the baristas. So, minus a star there.
