I came here because I have a long list of places to check out based on magazine & newspaper articles and this was the nearest thing to where I was going. I think I should clear out the list because some of these were written too long ago. If I were a local, I would go here frequently but this wasn't close to being magazine worthy. The restaurant has a great Texas charm. I liked the way the seating was laid out - plenty of it, but didn't feel cramped. Certainly didn't get hip slammed and was close to where the cooks passed out the food. The wait staff varied tremendously. Some were very nice, sweet and engaged. Some looked like they would like to tear their/your hair out. The waitress next to me refusing to take the table's picture because "she was too busy" kinda did it in for me. We took care of that. I had the chicken fried steak. Go with a 1/2 portion! It was big and the full was just obscenely large. The meat was very chewy and the chicken fried was VERY crunchy. Maybe the oil was too hot. The gravy needed a little kick (maybe just some pepper). The mashed potatoes were a pass. Likely stayed in a container for way too long before being served. Green beans seemed under cooked or bland. Either way, I didn't finish. I couldn't believe it, but I also got a slice of pie afterwards. My date was NOT going to share her banana cream pie and pointedly told me that in many ways, many times. So I was happy to order my own pecan pie. It was VERY good. Don't often see pecan pie with chopped bits on top. I don't know if it's cheaper that way or their style. Either way, it tasted good and I loved their filling. Pro-tip: Decent place to eat, just don't drive to it as a destination. read more

Disappointed! I am a pancake lover and ordered a Griddle Cake with Bacon. The cake was huge...larger than the plate. I believe quantity was a substitute for quality. The flavor was nonexistent until you added syrup. The syrup was tasty. The pancake was stiff and difficult to fold over to fit on the plate. Stiff and tasteless. Think cardboard. So the BLT was freaking amazing. The waitress we ended up with was nice . Only complaint... The staff person that "greeted and sat us" (female with black and pink hair) was almost the reason we left and didn't eat. Didn't acknowledge us, didn't talk to us, had to basically beg her to seat us and when the room was empty she decides we need to sit by the kitchen. Was not impressed with her. Been here several times over the years, but stopped as it was so crowded on Sat mornings, just took too long. So, very happy to see they've expanded - I wait. I had had the omelette and you get to make it the way you want, it's huge. It's definitely one you'll need at to go box. My son got the kids pancake, it too is huge. Nephew got the regular pancake and it's even bigger, very thick. So here's my suggestion, if two or more of you want a pancake, split this big thing and try some of the other stuff on the menu - like a biscuit n gravy. Again, outstanding. read more

Maxine's is a must visit for breakfast, everyone knows that, but we rarely go for lunch/dinner. We decided to go for dinner this time, and I honestly couldn't even remember what was on the menu other than that it would be good. I decided on the pork chops, fried, with onion rings and a salad. As soon as it was delivered to the table I knew some of it was coming home with me. Two perfectly battered and fried pork chops, still juicy and delicious. The onion rings were perfect, maybe a little overdone for some but that's how I like them! They didn't crumble and the onions separated when bitten (hate when your bite pulls the whole onion out of the ring in one bite.). The salad was the only thing disappointing, bare minimum effort really. Lettuce, a couple grape tomatos, I think there was a few shreds of carrot, but otherwise unremarkable and kinda sad. The kids enjoyed their burgers and wifey had meatloaf which was a huge slices and enjoyed thoroughly. She had enough leftover for lunch the next day too. We don't usually have room for dessert but we got a key lime pie to share and the boys got apple. The apple was very heavy on the spice, which isn't how I like it but it was good. I walk into every place in wonder evaluating the first impressions of not only myself, but the strangers around me. Are they enjoying themselves, the food, do they look lost like they're waiting on someone waiting on them... At Maxine's, they make a great first impression. It feels so "big" in such a small town, one of those places where everyone goes. The serving staff was quite busy, very common anywhere decent on a Sunday early afternoon. I think I had 1 pour of coffee at the beginning of my visit, and one again at the end. The food, which is why most people go places to eat, was okay. I sampled the pot roast, had some fried okra, and biscuits and gravy. I don't remember it, so I don't think I was very excited about any of it. I better remember the wood fired pizza we made at the campsite the night before. I will say that I did not try the shakes which sounded phenomenal, but I was saving myself for the Tough Cookie restaurant across the way. After all the food was accounted for and the bills came out, our 4 couples with split checks had a splitting headache trying to figure out why none of the numbers on our charge cards matched the bill we saw. We calculated gratuity, that wasn't it. We checked each other's orders, some of that was it. The offset was enough to alarm, I could care less about a couple dollars but we were talking 8/9 dollars off. Again, it was busy, it may have been difficult to hear, there could have been someone in training some of the workers weren't even fully developed yet, I get all that. If I didn't mention it though and only mention how cool the Christmas tree was decorated and the records on the wall, it wouldn't give an accurate representation of my experience which is the whole point of a review. I find myself asking if everyone goes because there are only like 3 restaurants in that area. Then I wonder, is this the best of them? If you go, go with an open mind and loose expectations. Me, my wife and Tico the Wonder Chihuahua were road tripping through the hill country when we stumbled upon this place. We got seated right away out side. The staff took our drink order quickly. The coffee is excellent. Nothing fancy, just good old fashioned black coffee. My wife ordered a breakfast taco. One was more than enough. It was stuffed to the brim. Her comment was, "it's amazing". I went with Jack's Eye Opener, biscuits and gravy with a scrambled egg on top, I also ordered a side of grits. Service was great even though they were very busy. We've been in Bastrop for 2 years and they used to be great! The food is still really good, but the service is getting really bad. I think they might be getting too busy or the staff just doesn't care anymore. They'll randomly cut off take out orders so that's a little irritating. How hard is it to throw a couple of premade biscuits in a bag and scoop some gravy into a cup? No one takes responsibility at the host stand either, so you'll get a different story and timing depending on who happens to walk by and feels like seating you. I was told it'll be 45 min - 1 hr. OK so we waited. 1 hour passes and we go check on the status. "There's a few people in front of you" OK, no problem. 45 more minutes goes by and we're still in the same spot on the list watching people get seated who just arrived. We are then told there's another list of people who have reservations. We ask, well when do you think we'll get seated? "We don't know" and she shrugs her shoulders. This seating system is broken. We waited almost 2 hours for nothing. We used to eat there regularly, but not so much anymore. They get 5 stars 1 year ago. But they get 2 now for the continued lack of awareness. read more

So sad the place is under new ownership and management - not nearly what it used to be. They used to have the best carrot cake ever made - whomever decided to replace it with some Sara Lee grade carrot cake is flat-out nuts. Years ago they had a killer rib eye they used to cook on a flame grill - the flame grill "broke" and no one ever fixed it - now they just slap that rib eye on a griddle, and ruin it. My husband and I camped at Bastrop State park for the weekend but ventured into Historic Downtown Bastrop for the day. We started with breakfast at Maxine's. Wow! After THAT meal, you won't need to eat again until dinner! It was delicious. The cafe is adorable, played great old school music and the wait staff is attentive. I can see why Maxine's Cafe and Bakery has so many great reviews! Great place to get some home cookin in downtown Bastrop! The weekends are their busiest days so be prepared to wait for about 30 min for a table; it's worth it! They have spaced out the tables so it's a little more limited. But you can eat outside, so do that if you are in more of a hurry (like the grumpy lady sitting at the next table over). I got the Famous Fried Green Tomato BLT with crispy fries and it was so good! Of course when you visit a place like this, you also have to get dessert! Ever had a banana pudding cake? I hadn't but it's a local favorite, and man is it tasty!! Dear Maxine's new owners, This used to be my favorite breakfast place. I would make the drive from Austin almost every Sunday just to eat here. Although you can't bring back the old management you should do everything you can to uphold the previous reputation this establishment had for years. Maintain the cooks because the flavor is key. Bring back the staff that made this feel like a locally own place. Bring back the baked goods!!!! And stop trying to push tamales. If I wanted Mexican food ...I would go to an authentic Mexican restaurant. The owners that were walking around micromanaging should've noticed all of the upset/shocked customers in the dining room but they were not empathic or helpful! Also, just incase you didn't notice your staff is unhappy as well you can tell how stressful it is for them having to explain to customers the changes. The ambiance is really nice. This place is super charming and you immediately felt like you're in a friendly, small Texas town. We were seated right away, although we snagged one of the last tables. This place was really busy for lunch on a Saturday. I had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans. I was really pleased with both the CFS and the mashed potatoes. The green beans were really lackluster, however. I want to say it had something to do with the broth they were cooked in - both my husband and I thought it tasted a bit sweet. The meal also came with a roll. I got the half-portion and it was more than enough. We took half of it to-go. My husband had the chicken salad sandwich. He liked that the chicken was in large chunks and was no frills with only mayo, celery, and onion. I loved that they served the drinks in large Mason jars, because I've been known to need a refill or two on my iced tea, and this lasted the whole meal. We took two pieces of cheesecake to-go. I had the lemon blueberry and he got the chocolate chip. The flavor of the lemon-blueberry was really great, but the texture was more like a no-bake cheesecake. This wasn't a problem for me, but just saying that there was a significant texture difference between mine and his. The chocolate chip one was fine, but I think mine was better. Overall, I think the food is more like 3.5 stars, but I really enjoyed our time there. read more
