I've come to the realization there's two sides of Ol' Rooster. Yes, I can fancy up breakfast with exotic ingredients like arugula and balsamic drizzle over poached eggs. Then, there's Country Bumpkin me that fancies biscuits and gravy and an old fashioned greasy spoon morning after drinking. I can't count how many times I've passed Texas Grill. That includes being a passenger headed to mom's brothers place in Winchester circa early 80's to bypassing Bastrop on the way to Houston in the last ten years. Thing is, I'm dating a country girl these days who swears by their coffee and jelly options. We dined recently on a Saturday morning; heading south afterwards to the stock show in San Antonio. Place is similar to diners across 'Murica; counter seating along with a large dining area. Buffet area is for lunch; straight forward menu for breakfast. Veggie basket on the lunch menu was comical; mushrooms are a vegetable? Breakfast review: One egg ordered with soft bacon, crispy hash browns and a biscuit. I was even offered a bowl of gravy AND an extra biscuit if I was still hungry. WELL, I wasn't. Egg was cooked to order. Taters took up half the dang plate! Bacon was perfect. Smothered that damn biscuit and dumped half the shaker of pepper on it....Well done y'all. read more

We went here for breakfast. I had a sausage and cheese omelette, along with their homemade biscuit, which were both delicious. The biscuit was light, not heavy (if you threw it at someone, they would have a concussion). My wife had the bacon and eggs, with home fries and toast. Never disappointed when we come here. A Jim's cafe type place, looks like it would work for very large groups. Service was quick and friendly! Husband got the chicken fried steak and enjoyed his- but the hash browns were on the tepid to cold side. Ok, this was a great breakfast! We were headed home from the Round Top Antique show. The hotel didn't have free breakfast, so we had to stop somewhere. I watched the waitresses greet many people by name, so this is a favorite of the locals. And I know why. It was great! My coffee cup was never below half full. I like breakfast at all 3 meals. Don't we all? Eggs, sausage, hash browns, and biscuits and gravy! And Tabasco sauce on it all! Breakfast of Champions! Glenda did biscuits and gravy, bacon, and a pancake. It was huge! It was alright. A little dirty/musty when we sat down in a booth. Some crumbs left in the crevices. Ummm the waitress had a little attitude which I suppose is understandable cause I changed my breakfast order to the burger. My family members got some breakfast and the potatoes had a very off taste. I was on my way from AUSTIN to my home on the water in Freeport and since it was still breakfast time on a Tuesday morning and I saw a billboard for this place on the highway, I made the U turn and pulled up in the parking lot. First of all I'm really critical of some cafes especially breakfast and buffet type places. I would not hesitate to send something back to the kitchen. So, looking around at the inside of this place I was really not that impressed and frankly expected the worst.... I usually make bad decisions about new places! I was greeted quickly by a pleasant, business like waitress with a menu. I ordered 2 eggs over easy with medium bacon, grits and white toast, with butter on the side..( I never say REAL butter )! Oh... and black coffee which was really good. In a few minutes, JOJO, my waitress brought everything else out. I was just starting to be impressed. The eggs were hot and perfectly cooked, 3 slices of bacon perfect again. But what I was really impressed with was a container with thinly sliced REAL butter for my grits and toast! JOJO did it that way because the butter, being still cold would have been hard to spread.....Wow that was something special that you don't much find in a server. All in all it was a fine experience and I will definitely go back again. Shame on the bad reviewers, most of them anyway! I know that you can't always be this excellent, but this time, thanks to JOJO My trip home was a lot more enjoyable. read more

Don't let the sign fool ya, I was expecting a steak house atmosphere. I was a little surprised when we went inside. It nothing more than a truck stop cafe. We decided to go ahead and try it, wish we had looked it up on Yelp before hand. Food on the buffet was luke warm and pretty much flavorless. Not a clean table in the place, waitress wiped it off with a stained rag... hope it wasn't the same rag used to clean the potty in the men's bathroom. This is your typical VERY Casual old fashioned roadside diner .... I did mention it was VERY casual. The Sunday after church crowd looked more like the Sunday crowd at Galveston at a Dennys.....so don't dress up, come however you are. 11:30 to 2pm they have buffet....sort if like a small limited selection Lubys daily. Pay for what you eat. They also have sit down area. And its seat yourself by the way. Their breakfast seems to be the thing to order. Hamburger and fries was good. No sweet potatoe here. They have one salad on the menu. .... but it sure looked good and fresh. Now as to the wait staff...an older group of folks that for me just added to the overall ambiance with a grumpiness that is just laughable. The use of the word ambiance I need rethink... it's a fancy word and this is an adorable country diner. Kid friendly. City folk weekend biker friendly. Just country friendly. There is NO pretentiousness here. And I found that refreshing. It's rather charming actually. Even my waitress literally dropping the napkin wrapped silver?ware to the "you still want that plate" LOL. Now.... I cleaned my plate so the food is good and in thevsthle of a classic greasy spoon diner good. Plus I was sort of fearing a lecture on wasting my food from my grandma waitress. LOL. I will so be back! Now when you want to pay remember you need to walk up to the cash register to pay like any good country diner worth its salt. Any place that ALLOWS smoking gets my vote! Went for breakfrast a few weeks ago and had the steak and eggs with cheesy grits and toast. The coffee was good, the steak was kinda cold, and the grits were instant. But that's what I'd expect from the look of the place! I was full at the end, and didn't feel sick later, so it wasn't that bad. Today the wife and I had the chicken fried steak. It was good. The breading was basic and cooked just right. We were afraid of the salad bar at first, but it had pears and cantaloupe and was actually cold and pretty fresh. I've been to worse salad bars! Of course, my evil smoker taste buds could have been fooled, but for me and the wife, it has been a nice place to visit to get away from all the noisy big places in Austin. read more

Of all the places between Houston and Brownwood someone could stop, this has got to be one of the worst. The food is straight up overpriced on the menu, but sometimes they have a cafeteria style line set up and then you can get out of there for less than $10. However, the food is sub par, bland, tasteless and all around not worth the $6 I paid for it. I can't comment on the service, cause we really didn't have any. My co-worker and I stopped by for breakfast. I enjoyed. A lot of past discussion on smoking. Appears to be smoke free. I had eggs, sausage, biscuits, hash brown, and coffee. The biscuits were fresh and fluffy. The hash browns were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, the eggs cooked as ordered (scrambled). The only disappointment was the sausage. The sausage had no flavor. The coffee was strong, but good. The service was pretty good. We work EMS, so we are in a hurry, you never know when a call is going to drop and you have to run out the door. It seemed to take a time to place out order, but once placed, the service was excellent. We had a false call and almost had to run out the door. Our waitress had our food delivered in to go containers in case we got a second call. Look forward to trying out lunch. read more

This spot is interesting...when you walk through the door it is like stepping into a large version of your grandmothers dinning room, that was modern in 1950, and has become stuck in time. Don't let the room fool you, grandma is still in the kitchen! Texas Grill serves BIG portions so bring your appetite, you will NOT be disappointed. We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and Half a Fried Chicken meals and both were mouthwatering and scrumptious. After the Oyster Bar and Maxine's went non-smoking, it was only a matter of time...the Texas Grill is now non-smoking as well. Now, I can't say it's a smoke-free joint, exactly...there's a few generations' worth of tobacco byproducts in the walls, floor and ceiling, and a sharp new coat of paint won't make it disappear...but three cheers to the management for making the leap, risking the loss of some regulars but definitely attracting new business. These days at the Texas Grill, without the worry of second-hand smoke, you can take years off your life the old-fashioned way: with lots of eggs, bacon, ham, biscuits, butter, sausage, gravy, cheese (did I already say bacon?) and hot, black coffee with cream.
