Catfish, fries, homemade tartar sauce 3
    Lowell O.

This is as close to five stars as I can give a restaurant where you order at the counter, grab your own plastic ware, pour your own water and then come get your own food when they call your name. But if you don't mind you're your restaurant being run like a Starbucks, you'll love it here. A very friendly person took our order and checked on us regularly. So we felt cared for even though it was technically self serve. The catfish here was honestly better than Paw-Paw's in Bastrop. The hushpuppies were great. The fries were very lightly battered and very delicious. The tartar sauce was homemade. What's not to like? I mean, they were out of coleslaw that day, but that happens. The BLTA is the perfect BLT sandwich plus fresh avacado. I could spend two or three hours thinking about how to make it just slightly better and come back with nothing. It was the perfect BLTA, though and through. Stash IPAs rounded out the meal. The walls and ceiling are decorated with props and memorabilia from Hope Floats and other movies that were filmed here. It was a great meal, we enjoyed our time here, and we'll definitely be back. I prefer a wait staff to self serve. And I prefer to pay and make tip decisions at the end of a meal, instead of up front. But our experience here was otherwise flawless.

We were in Smithville for a shopping trip to Consuela when we decided to get something for lunch. This restaurant has many options of entrees. I have the Taco Salad with chicken with salsa as dressing. The restaurant interior is decorated with memorabilia from movies filmed in Smithville. My favorites are the items from Hope Floats.

Anyone that gives pockets Grill less than five star simply doesn't understand with good food is. They're probably used to cheap fast food, probably something like soda and nuggets. Pocket grill is absolutely amazing. Let me tell you what, the burgers wings and pizza are top notch. I will go into detail below. Food: 5/5 The food here is simply amazing. I went with their seven dollar lunch special which was a burger with cheese some fries. The burger was grilled to perfection and very tasty. The fries were exceptionally well, very crispy crunchy. I had a bacon to my burger amazing. We also got some wings as an appetizer. Let me tell you what, the wings here are absolutely amazing. The wings are humongous, they are full of flavor and they are very fresh. Someone at my table got pizza and it look really good as well. That will be the next thing I try when I'm in town. I was blown away by Pockets Grille. I'm telling you right now anyone to give this place five stars less. Or less than five stars you simply don't know good food. This food is great. I will stop here every single time that I'm in Smithville. This will be put into my Smithville rotation. Or if you're on the way to Austin do yourself a favor and stop. Customer service: the customer service was absolutely great. The lady work on the cash register was very personable and took good care of us. The food came out quick. I really don't know how this place got a few bad reviews. Because I'm telling you right now it's a five-star experience.

Always good food, but no longer can eat foods fried in vegetable or seed oils. Not healthy! Beef Tallow would be great!

The staff (shout out to the ones I've met so far) Kevin, Brittany and Terrance took the time to explain how the cafe works. so many delicious options, I went with the jalapeno popper omelette which did not disappoint. Brittany helped navigate a coffee I would enjoy and I did! You place your order and then take a seat and when they bring out your food, you get a little pocket to put cash into to pay whatever you want. The food was great and it benefits addiction recovery. My only complaint is that they really really really need to put fans on the patio cause I was swatting away flies the entire time I was eating. I wouldn't eat outside again. I went for breakfast and had a 3-meat omlette which I actually couldn't even finish cause I was full. It was a little weird getting the apple juice in a cup full of ice but I guess I could have gotten more if I wanted it. I'd like to back for lunch sometime.

It's very country looking, so that was appealing. We started with the fried pickles for an appetizer to share. Our group was a party of 3. The pickles were a perfect split for us. The ranch served with the pickles had a tartar sauce undertone taste. It was pretty good. We all had the sweet tea and lemonade mix. It was refreshing. I ordered the regular JW's burger on a classic white bun. The burger was okay. There was no special seasoning to it. I wasn't able to order it medium. From the looks of it, it was "done", so that is a little too done for me. I like mine a little pink. They use leaf lettuce. I prefer shredded. The pickles on my burger were cut lengthwise, and 2 of the strips still had the outer skin on them. Not a fan of that. The fries were good. They had a nice crunch to them. The service was great at JW's. Our drinks were never empty, the food came out fast, and our waitress was very nice. You can't get better than country service. It was a nice change from Houston where everything is hustle and bustle. We all three split a piece of coconut pie. It was okay, but to be fair, I am not a pie person. My coworkers thought it was terrific. If I am out that way again and decide to stop in, I will order something different. Maybe the chicken fried steak. The neighboring table ordered it and it looked good! Our bill for the 3 of us was $71 and some change before tip. That seems on point for 1 appetizer, 3 drinks, 3 entrees, and 1 piece of pie. It was crowded, especially for a weekday after the lunch rush in the country, so they must be doing something right.

I will say that the prices are on a steeper side; however, the portions are also generous. We had a pleasant meal here and definitely recommend it to anyone looking for good, southern comfort food.

I usually call in our order when we are about 20 minutes away from our stop. Everytime I call in the order the person on the other end is friendly and repeats back what we order. The convenient store part of Hruska's has a lot of items that you can choose from to purchase and they have clean bathrooms which is a positive. When we get there we park, walk in and head to pick up our food at the counter. It's usually labeled with the ticket stapled to the bag. We then get in line to pay for our food. The line is usually backed up but moves fairly quickly. There is also a small area with tables and chairs that you can sit at and enjoy your meal or sit there if you need a rest. For my meal I usually order a Hamburger which comes with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. I usually get mine with mustard. Their burgers are so good and a good size. Arguably one of the greatest foods ever invented. Atleast in my world. How can you go wrong with bread filled with sweet or savory fillings? Hruska's is about halfway between Houston and Austin and a perfect rest stop to fill up on gas, use the clean facilities, grab a snack or indulge in their amazing baked goods. They are steeped in history and have been around for decades passing along the family recipes. It's obviously improved structurally over the years from a country store and looks like a modern gas station now. It's always pretty busy every time I have stopped in, but they are a well oiled machine and keep the masses moving with excellent customer service. They have all your gas station essentials like snacks and beverages. What sets them apart is their bakery. Here, they label their kolaches as the traditional fruit filled variety. I like them, but they are never my first choice. I love the ones with meat inside. Here, they label these as pigs in a blanket. They have a large variety of both. I usually go for a regular sausage and cheese, but over here, they sell a delicious pan sausage kind. On top of all their sweet and savory baked goods, they also sell burgers on the grill. Their burgers have made it to the Texas Monthly Top 50 burger spots. I have yet to try it. Overall, this is an always stop place for me. I highly recommend stopping here to stretch your legs and enjoy a delicious pastry while you're at it. I will definitely be back.
