Had a great time at the Whiskey Den last night! I had been cautious to go in as the previous business in this location was sketchy. I was so pleasantly surprised! Kyle the bartender was friendly and patient (something that can be challenging for bartenders). Music was your typical small town Vermont bar, but mixed it up here and there. Don't get me wrong you will run into classic St. J characters.... But it is a big space so you can find your own corner. Got to speak with the owner Joanna and she was lovely! She is creating a space for everyone, and very strict on keeping out the riff Raff and is careful not to over serve to avoid problems and keep customers feeling safe. .....if you need a break past 9pm in St.J, I would give it a try!

Given its proximity to hill farmstead, they get their share of beer connoisseurs here and no one walks away disappointed. Throw in the fact that they are kinda in the middle of nowhere and it seems impossible. Kudos to Parker pie for their beer procurement! The pizza this time was just OK. BBQ chicken had hardly any chicken but the crust was nice and crispy. My previous 3 visits felt like it wasn't quite as busy and the food came out better and hotter than this particular time. We went on a Thursday and it wasn't slamming but the back bar was pretty full and they had a parking attendant to help you get to a spot in the small lot. There was an open mic but no one stepped up while we were there. The back bar area is pretty tight. There is some outdoor seating as well. Everything was fairly clean and the staff were attentive and polite. In the end, I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars but am rounding up because the beer menu is so good. If you're in the area, it's definitely the place to be but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to go there since it's a bit off the beaten path.

You'll see a general store - Parker Pie is the red building on the back side. It has lots of pluses. First, we enjoyed the open-mic night with live music on Thursdays from 6pm-9pm. Second, the pizza was OK but the salads were superb (the blue cheese was from Jasper Hill Farm in Greensboro, VT). Third, Hill Farmstead beers are on tap (which were very high quality). On the minus side, the "back bar" area had limited seating (it was quite crowded). Service was OK. You must order first and pre-pay at the front (giving your name and seating location), then wait for the staff to bring your pizza and salad to you. Be sure to pack your patience - it can take a while for the food to arrive if it's crowded!

Just a tad rich for my blood, plus I couldn't buy for one grandchild and not the other, so I purchased none. But I digress. The inn is old, very old in fact, but it is well appointed, and the rooms have been upgraded as much as possible. They are very small, but very clean and tastefully decorated with bunnies and all. The bed was super comfortable with great pillows. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We pretty much stayed to ourselves, but there were a number of common areas where we could've fraternized with the guests, played board games, read. The outdoor grounds were quite lovely, and in addition to a patio to sit on, there was a large grassy area to walk around, and I believe one could play croquet too... not positive about that part, though. There were no TV's in the rooms purposely, and I'm not sure there were any in the common areas either. I doubt we would've liked that if we had stayed longer than one night... but for one night, we survived. Funny and ironic how dependent we (and most people) are on being entertained by TV's. My only disappointment was, and I knew ahead of time, is that we were staying there on a night their main dining room was NOT open, so we didn't get to dine there. It probably would've been much better than where we did eat, and we would've had the convenience of being right there... but alas, it was not meant to be this time. Their pub was open, but the menu was quite minimal and not anything we were interested in. If ever we should pass through this part of Vermont in the future, I would love the opportunity to stay here again.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, and we really enjoyed sitting in front of the fire place at night after a long day. My rabbit loving sister especially enjoyed all the rabbit decor. Definitely one of the best places my mother, sister, and I have stayed.

It is absolutely unique with wonderful 19th century buildings in perfect condition, the animal sanctuary, and incredible views of the mountains on all sides. Our son's wedding was outside with a view of the Lake Willoughby Gap. Spectacular setting as you walk through flower covered fields to the wedding site. The staff is well-organized and very friendly. By the end of your stay, they seem like family. The guests, who attended from all over the U.S., absolutely loved it. If you are considering a wedding venue or a place to stay in the Northeast Kingdom for a few days, look at Inn at Mountain View Farm. You will be glad that you did.

We couldn't feel more lucky to have had our wedding here. My husband and I met in Vermont, but we live in New York City. We knew it was going to be complicated planning a wedding from afar, and we simply could NOT have done it without Christy. "She is worth her weight in gold!" my Dad said at one point during the planning process, and boy is he correct! We had a million questions, and for every one Christy had an answer that made perfect sense and calmed our nerves. She is an expert at this and has endless brilliant ideas about how to make the party flow. When we were clueless about how to make something happen, she took the lead. And when we had a particular idea -- a maple creemee truck, bringing a jazz band from NYC, a table with thousands of cookies -- she let us lead and helped make it happen. She even helped find a basketball court in town for my husband and his groomsmen to play a game! Above and beyond is an understatement. On top of that, the venue is spectacular. You can tell Christy and her wonderful husband, Gary have put love and thought into every corner. We threw our entire weekend right here -- a welcome party the night before, yoga on the grounds the morning of, a ceremony on the stunning hill, and of course an incredibly fun reception in the cocktail pavilion and barn. Our guests from New York City, Ohio, California, Connecticut all raved about how special it was to celebrate here, and my husband and I didn't even have to leave the grounds once we arrived on Friday morning! I'll never forget the feeling as each of our friends and family arrived at the Alerin Barn and the enthusiasm and fun that abounded the entire weekend. We wanted our wedding to be a warm, sophisticated, Vermont-y, special PARTY. Christy and Gary helped make it real at every turn. And the breakfast they make you each morning is an added delight. Driving to the Alerin Barn makes one a little skittish about its usefulness as a wedding venue…read more You climb and climb a mountain road where deerskins hang in the trees and cars sit on blocks in yards. But when you enter the world of Alerin Barn and the Keeper on Horned Pout Pond, you leave all of that behind. The property is a world unto itself-- a fully refinished farm house, a gorgeously restored barn, a pond-- and, in a meadow up on the hill (a short cart ride away, but walkable), an outdoor chapel for wedding ceremonies. The farmhouse has ample room for both halves of the couple to dress in, and a few rooms for guests to stay. The chapel has rough-hewn wooden benches and an arbor under some trees. When I photographed a wedding there the staff had brought lemonade service up for the guests. The property owners have also made an adorable cart that pulls behind a tractor to carry your guests up to the meadow where the chapel is. The barn itself is well redone with room for tables on both floors and a walk-out patio on the second floor. The DJ booth is on the second floor and overlooks the dance floor. There are patio tables by the pond and a floating dock that you can walk out onto. The staff is wonderful (both the in house and hired in staff) and the owners are personable and very, very capable. The wedding I photographed there also featured a fireworks display over the pond, it was spectacular.
