There are a few hidden gems in Auburn, but the place I think the most about is this one. I love their pesto chicken salad sandwich and cream of mushroom soup! I moved back to Sacramento after 10 months of living in Auburn. Don't get me wrong, Auburn is a cute town for hikes...but not much else. Sad this place is only open during working hours, I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to go back here. Maybe someday. Perfectly charred brisket, juicy and flavorful, paired with fresh, crisp veggies and just the right amount of pickled crunch. The bread had that perfect outer crust with a soft inside that held everything together beautifully. The chips on the side were a solid touch--crispy and seasoned well--and I washed it down with a sparkling water, which they had on hand. Loved the vibe of the place too: clean, casual, and unfussy. I went to max's deli today and being that it was my first visit, I saw that it had great ratings. It was obvious right off the bat that it's a lunch spot favorite. I accidentally underestimated how long my meal would take to be ready for to go and had a limited time to get back to work. We meandered over to Max's Deli on friend's recommendation for the pastrami sandwich. It's only two blocks off the Bell/49 intersection close to Professional. They not only have ONE, they have four styles of pastrami sandwiches. Husband had The Brooklyn (pastrami brisket, Swiss cheese, house mustard, kosher pickle with kettle chips). He is VERY picky and loved this sandwich, best he's had in ages. I had the Sonoma Chicken Salad (spinach greens, dried cranberries, blue cheese, large candied pecans and grilled chicken with a raspberry-walnut vinaigrette) HUGE very fresh salad, chicken just right, excellent dressing, and a cup of Thai Chicken and Rice soup, over-the-top flavorful with loads of veggies and mushrooms. We tried Max's several years ago and wasn't impressed. This time everything was different - fresh salad makings, full flavor in house-made pastrami, food beautifully seasoned. Even though this is just a deli, nothing fancy, it is super clean and decorative, excellent service, comfortable seating, plenty of parking. I had the brisket banh mi on a soft french roll. This was actually one of the best sandwiches I've had. No skimpiness on the brisket-delicious! I am not a fan of kettle chips but this brand was amazing. The best chips I've ever had. The potato salad and lemon bar was incredible. The drink selection was also very good. This is a very busy place as it is located in an industrial complex with many businesses. Max's is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and caters to the people working at this location. While I was there, I could not believe how many people were doing take- out sandwiches and ordering. The restaurant is very clean and well staffed. Just heard about this place and had a weekday opportunity to check in. Got a half sando of the #35 The Pilgrim, which was delicious. Subbed by chips for potatoe salad (+2.50), also yum. Place is busy at lunch time, fire engine full of the fire fighters walked in, County workers and sheriff types in for the lunch hour. Seemed like the gals in the back were jamming food out, not their first rodeo which was appreciated. Only critique is my sandwich came incorrect, I asked for white but got multi-seed. I'm not a stickler so it was fine and still tasty. I think the fella that took my order might've accidentally hit the wrong button, he was having a moment with my "Light Cream Cheese" request. It's very easy to order online the personal tastes* Last critique: all the tables were dirty, but I understand it's hard to get a team member to clean when they are needed to make food for the long line. Were on our way home from a trip to Idaho and looking for a healthy in-hand lunch. Found Max's online and they sounded good, so we made the off-freeway drive to find them. Was going to get the brisket banh-mi since it sounded so good - but the friendly clerk said yes, it could be kinda messy to eat in the car. Ended up with the Monterey Turkey sandwich on sourdough and it was great. Very generous amount of turkey, fresh ingredients. Just had the best chicken salad sandwich in Town. Usually I have my go-to pastrami, which is the best around. Chicken salad on sourdough was obviously made fresh that day. I always love a sandwich that is a little messy, because it has so much good stuff in it. I was amazed at how many happy face people were coming and going, picking up food.
