My husband stopped by earlier today. He picked up a few sandwiches so we could have an early dinner. We love this family owned sandwich shop. They also have a deli counter with many items. Cheeses, meats, salads and they even have baked goods. They have many chips and bottled drinks to choose from. We usually get the Rat Trap Sandwich. I can not eat anything spicy. I have to change the cheese from jalapeño to cheddar cheese. I do not like pepperoncini's. So I have to adjust the sandwich a little. It has many different meats on the Rat Trap Sandwich. I absolutely love the homey feel of this shop and the high-quality of their meats and cheese! Their hours make them a bit difficult to catch, but when you do, the weight is well worth it. I love the rat trap sandwich, and no matter what sandwich I get, I always get it on their Dutch crunch bread. They fell the sandwich generously and everything is always fresh. I really love this place! It was recommended and I drove down from Roseville to try. I have passed the area a few times during backroad drives from Loomis and Lincoln. It's fairly close off of I80. A historic part of town with plenty of charm. The Newcastle Cheese Shop appears to be very popular. People come from all over to try. I love the photos and woodworking all around. The staff were very friendly and personable. A recommendation was to try the hot pastrami sandwich with a Dutch Crunch roll. It was super delicious. There's plenty of seating or you can take it to go. They package your sandwich nicely. Out of the three places I reviewed, this was my fav. Visited some family out in Newcastle and right off the bat seemed like an amazing spot in the area for a fresh sandwich. My family often goes here a lot too so I was excited. Got their infamous Rat Trap Sandwich and it was delicious. It was packed with so much meat and condiments, filled me up fast. Got the sandwich with Dutch Crunch bread it was okay, it wasn't that crunchy like your normal Dutch Crunch but I think I got a wrong slice of it. Arrived 30 minutes before closing and was greeted with a smile. Ordered the infamous Rat Trap on a Dutch crunch with all the fixings Dirty Sea Salt chips. Mrs ordered the Veggie Sandwich on a soft roll & pasta salad. Used the restroom & the water station & the sandos were delivered quickly. Pretty tasty combo of meats and cheese on a slightly dry fluffy Dutch crunch. Vegi Sandwich offered a medley of green including avocado. After reading reviews, I had to visit after a few hours of gold panning the American River. I like the location and outdoor seating. No complaints about the service as they come out looking for you when you sit outside. Now about the sandwich. I ordered a hot pastrami on dutch crunch. I don't know what I expected but this wasn't it. Yes they have cheese as the name suggests but the draw is the made to order deli sandwiches and the huge variety of drinks. I had the famous "rat trap" sandwich - 4 meats, cheese, and the works on a Dutch roll - and it's really good. You can customize any sandwich and they'll heat it up if you'd like. They also have some snacks you can buy to round out your meal. The service is really friendly. I commented that the chili smelled good so they slipped a little sample with my order. They know people's names, everyone was smiling even when it got busy. It's pretty small so you might have a hard time finding a seat if it's around the lunch hour. Dare I say the best sandwich ever? First, let's discuss the term sandwich. It should be served on a bread that is supple, supportive, tasty, but not at all the centerpiece. The meats should be fresh, and shouldn't all taste the same. They should stand out but not be obtrusive. And the combination should be akin to a professional sommelier pairing a fine wine with dinner. The assembly should be unexpected when suggested but obvious after the fact. The cheese needs to be real. Not something individually wrapped or pre-sliced. And like the pairing of meats, it too should be designed. Do I sound crazy? Like perhaps covid has melted my brain to mush? Why in the world would a sandwich shop be so exacting? So careful and purposeful? I can think of only one reason. To make the best sandwich ever. And they accomplish this despite the burden of covid. I sincerely hope they endure and I would recommend going and experiencing a sandwich as soon as possible in the event they some how do not make it through covid. It would be a shame. I came from Roseville. We wanted to go on a drive and yelp suggested the spot. Honestly I wasn't in favor of trying a new spot in the midst of covid, but thankfully my wife convinced me to stop. I had the rat trap. It was delightful. It was a variety of meats along with lettuce tomato and some other condiments. It was perfection.
