So when it snowed 5 inches, and my reliable Ariens Deluxe 24 suddenly wouldn't start I knew I had a problem! Hand shoveling my driveway is not practical on a regular basis with a decent snow volume, and because of the amount of square feet I've got (it's A LOT). I started looking for someone to come to me for a repair, as I have no way to tow this beast to a shop -- and found Max's Mobile Small Engine here on Yelp! Not only was he able to come out quickly, he was able to come to me and charged a very fair price to get my Ariens up and running again. Ed came out two hours after I'd called, and fixed my snowblower inside my garage. Took him an hour or so, and he charged a fair reasonable price. Thing ran great afterwards. I'd recommend him to anyone. Hint: don't call for a fix when you have a foot of snow in the driveway. He gets busy. Ed did a snow thrower for me (1999 Troy Bilt workhorse) and a quick mower tune up. Initially I was going to take it to a small motors place to get repaired, tossed the snowblower in my car and that absolutely sucked! Heavy lift and wiggle into car, roll rear window down to close hatch...drive to place, only to find it had been a converted to auto repair shop...used yelp to find a new solution. Found Max's small motors Called him left vm, he called later in the day and I told him our issue with our Honda snowblower. Told him I wouldn't be home but my wife and her girlfriends would be there. Wonderful service!! Ed came out within a few hours of me calling to look at my snow blower. Mind you, this was after several days of snow and another impending snowfall. He took less than 30 minutes to fix the issue and tighten up a few of the loose nuts/bolts better. He then tested it out by snow blowing almost my entire large driveway. Lastly, he gave me a tutorial to make sure I knew how to operate properly and then gave me tips and recs on how to keep the snow blower properly maintained. Called Ed of Max's small engine early evening Saturday. With the impending snowstorm I had gone out to try to start my elderly snowblower and if wouldn't.Ed called back 10 minutes later and said he might be able to comeout sunday. He called sunday morning. of course I didn't hear the phone and I am grateful he came out anyway .He worked out in the cold under the porch overhang (old school guys are awesome)Had it running is 10 minutes(beautiful sound),showed me what it needed ,where wear marks were on snow blades and bar that pushes the snow up into them. cleaned it , restarted it several times so it worked to his satisfaction. Max called back in an hour saying he does not come out this way, but referred me to his buddy Dean. Dean came over within a few hours with a van full of tools, nuts and bolts, and most importantly, Dean's know how and good attitude. Riding mower was up and running, along with helpful tips on how to keep it in tip top shape and how to avoid having to call Max or Dean so much in the future! But, when normal maintenance fails, or if you just want someone to come out and do routine maintenance, for the cost of having someone pick up and drop off your machine, Max's (and also Dean) is the best choice. read more

Very disappointed in their customer service. Very rude! From the first phone call, until I left with my lawn mower, they were rude, and hateful! IN the beginning I was told that they were 100 deep in lawn mowers and it would be 2 -3 weeks before they could get to my lawn mower. Ok, I could understand. Even though it only needed a belt. Three weeks later, I called, and they informed me the belt was on back order. Their supplier didn't have any and it was on back order. With technology being what it is now, and the internet at your fingertips, its hard to understand why they couldn't go online and find my belt. I mentioned that and I was informed they couldn't put an "after market" belt on, as it was a complicated procedure to take everything apart, drop the engine, to get to the belt. There is nothing I hate more, than being lied to. I went to YouTube to verify how difficult it would be to replace the belt. It was NOT going to be difficult or require dropping the engine. I asked for the part number, went online, and within a matter of minutes had found at least 4 locations where I could purchase the belt, which I did and had two days later. I took the belt to them. Within a very short time, that same day, they called and said the lawn mower was ready. Hmm, a complicated procedure that they had managed within a short time. However, the battery wouldn't start the lawnmower and I would need a new one. I told them not a problem, I'd stop in at Walmart and purchase one. Oh, no, they said that Walmart's "neverstarts" aren't any good and they would advise against buying one of Walmart's batteries. They insisted they had the best one, for a mere $42. Walmart battery would cost me a whopping $21. I should actually have gone to O'Reilly's and bought it, as they hadn't knocked O'Reillys. Needless to say, I bought it at Walmart. Upon my arrival at Max's they informed me that if I didn't have the tools to exchange their battery for my newly purchased one, they would charge me $10 to RENT their tools. Thank goodness, I carry tools! We exchanged the batteries. I guess they had assumed I would buy their battery, as it was already installed. For some mysterious reason, my new Walmart battery wouldn't even make a clicking noise, much less start the lawnmower. I wonder what wire could have "mistakenly" been disconnected?? Hmm... Now, this was on a Thursday, before Memorial Weekend. Max's were going to be closing at 5 pm and wouldn't reopen until the following Tuesday. They were manipulating me. I was not going to have time to run to O'Reilly's and get a battery. So, I caved and agreed to buy their battery. Oh, but they didn't have the $42 one in stock, ONLY the $49 battery. They did install the $49 battery, without charging me. How thoughtful! (sarcasm) Now all this time, the repairman and the counter woman were treating us very poorly. I would rate their customer service an F. Never have I, as a customer, been treated so horribly. It was evident they didn't appreciate me finding and purchasing the belt myself, or buying a battery from someone else. If I had waited for them to finally get the belt, they could have had my lawnmower for most of the summer. Worse customer service I have every experienced in my lifetime. And, I'm a senior citizen! So....we had a nearly new Sears Craftsman 2 stage snowblower that needed its' carburetor replaced while it was still in warranty. It took Sears 3+ weeks to fix it but it started up and was good to go.....until the next season. The snowblower wouldn't start so we tried to fix it ourselves and spent way too much time and effort in a failed attempt. I found Max's Mobile Small Engine on Yelp and was impressed with the reviews. I called and left a message for Ed, the owner and sole employee for the past 25 years (there is another repair guy named Ed the area that has been in business when Ed started hence the name Max was born). I got a call back within 2 hours and Ed was at my house 20 minutes after the callback. Ed knows engines....first he fixed the problems I created and put everything back together. Then he isolated the carburetor problem, fixed it and gave the machine a new spark plug. He also made some minor adjustments and offered some long term maintenance advice. This was a great experience and I was extremely satisfied with the quick response and his fair price. Wow. I found it hard to believe that Ed had all 5 star reviews but I found out why. Came right over and quickly diagnosed and fixed my power washer and did a quick once over on my ancient mower which I just need to last through the season. Had a trimmer that wasn't starting and he found the problem and recommended I not spend the money to repair it - even suggested I replace it with a rechargeable trimmer. Showed me a few things to do to avoid future problems with the equipment - all of this for a very very reasonable price. I used Max's for the first time this weekend and was absolutely thrilled. My 17 year old Honda single stage snow blower was not starting. Admittedly, I had not had it serviced EVER. I called Ed [the owner's name] on a Friday afternoon, and he was able to come out the next day at 9 am, and he arrived punctually. I was a little put off by the old VW vehicle he drove up in but any reservation went away when he started working on the machine. He had it running in a few minutes and then started to look at other performance of the machine, lubricating parts as needed. He changed the oil and spark plug. He also found the scraper bar on the bottom of the blower was also in need of replacing. This proved to be a arduous task for Ed. I was surprised when he actually had the part with him, but then had to cut the bolts off because they were rusted. When he put the new scraper in place, he also put some "goop" on the bolts to insure this might not happen again. All in all, he not only did what I had asked but really did a bang up job of getting this older machine working in good order and he also giving me tips for treating the gasoline and how to properly store the machine during the summer. His price seemed reasonable especially since I did not have bring the blower to him. TERRIFIC. read more
