Max's is a solid, neighborhood Italian restaurant with excellent thin crust pizza and a large menu of Italian food. My companions shared a large Margherita pizza. I had penne filetto de pomodoro, which is pasta in a red sauce with sautéed prosciutto, onion, and cherry tomatoes. The sauce was perfectly seasoned, and it was delicious. The entrée portions here are massive, and everything is served hot and fresh. The servers hustle, and prices are reasonable. There are three pizzaria/restaurants on this same block in downtown Scotch Plains. Massimo's is sheet pan pizza, very good, but with a much more limited menu. I had heard about Max'S from social media. When we got there it was empty but 5 minutes later it was bustling. There was one server and while she was amazing our heart broke for her. There were 8 or so tables and girl was kicking its butt. For the food. It was good. I was expecting a little bit more, the chicken was good. Just needed maybe a little more seasoning but will def go back and try the pizza. It's a small quaint pizzeria. As for accessibility, getting in was super easy. Being in a wheelchair I would suggest going to the restroom before you go. You can't get your chair through the hallway. No bars in bathroom. Struggled there. read more

I've only ever had take-out from Max's, so my review is solely based on that, but I've ordered there dozens of times. There is a lot of competition for pizza places around here, but Max's has the best pie. I usually order it well done, which just serves to crisp the crust a little more. Whether we'll-done or not, the flavor and chew on the crust here is excellent. The Buffalo chicken pizza is a standout, and the Gramma pie is great too. Maxs also has the best subs in the area, and this is because the bread is so good. The meatballs are very good and I definitely recommend the meatball sub, and the chicken cutlet sub. The chicken fingers are really good too, not just kid food. The salads are large and generous with the variety of ingredients in them. The chicken franchise is another favorite we've ordered many times and never been disappointed.I have to mention the bread again, as it comes with the entrees, and it just elevates every it comes with. The only misses for me are the wraps. They usually fall apart and are too wet inside. But everything else is really good and reasonably priced for the area. I've been at this restaurant before so I was totally prepared for a casual atmosphere. The staff was so friendly. They seem to enjoy what they do! Our food was excellent. We had the chicken saltimbocca and the veal saltimbocca. The accompanying salads were fresh and with a good variety of veggies. Love this local place. Picked up a pepperoni and onion pizza and mozzarella sticks. The pickup time for a Saturday evening was quick - only 20 minutes and the food was ready on my arrival. The pizza had good flavor, though I wish the crust was thicker. I say that as someone who already thinks Jersey has too much of an infatuation with thinner pizza slices, but this one in particular was really light. The toppings were generous enough, with diiced onion instead of the larger cuts that most pizza spots use. The mozzarella sticks weren't bad, which is a rave review for someone who continues to get mozz sticks for takeout. I don't know who hurt me. I know they won't ever be good, you can't put them in a to-go container. These at least weren't completely soggy after their few minute trip in the foil dish. I'd eat it again, but if I ever hear that they start making their crusts thicker, I could see myself being a weekly customer. read more

Best pizza! We moved out of state and use Max's pizza as a standard to judge all other pizzas we try in our area now. None come close... Having only been in Fanwood for a year I was struggling to find a good spot for takeout pizza. Finally a coworker recommended this place made it has been my go to pizza spot. But recently we hosted a large party at our house and we needed it catered and I decided to order from here having never tried their entrées. This place is real deal Italian food. I am very picky about my caesar salad dressing and chicken parm. I have a go to spot that is tough to match. Max's has done it and done it very well. I placed an online order tonight and when I showed up the order did not go through until I had walked in the order for some reason although I got the confirmation via email. However, the girl at the front counter and the owner max were so nice to me and max said he would make it right there for me so I didn't have to wait any longer. I ordered a margharita and a Hawaiian pie along with wings and cannolis. Everything was so fresh and delicious. And not to mention everyone in there was so nice and caring after the small hiccup. Staff is friendly and attentive (especially the young ladies working the front) and prepare orders quickly. They could easily get away with tacking a dollar or so onto most slices to match the prices nearby but they don't. Definitely worth giving them a chance. Only thing I would like to see is a little more variety on individual takeout slices - there's usually only plain and 1-2 other types at once. read more

My son and his wife came up for the week. We have had Max's pizza before . It's the best around. Their entrees are unbeatable. If I made it myself it could not have been better. I ordered a meat lovers gradma pizza and the young lady ended up giving me a margherita grandma pizza.. also I ordered 12 buffalo wings and then I asked if the wings were naked or breaded.. she said they were breaded so i decided to change it to 6 wings because I prefer naked wings (by the way they were naked and not breaded smh) when I received my order and realized it was wrong,rather than making a scene, I explained to the worker that i didn't order a margherita that I ordered a meat lovers.. I said if it is possible can I at least add sausage to this pie and I'll pay extra if I have to.. everyone act as if they had no idea what to do so i decided to say if it's such a big deal I'll take my pie as is.. rather than fixing the pie for me they decided to let me leave unhappy.. im in the restaurant industry so I get mistakes happen.. but the way they handled this issue was terrible.. everyone seem so confused as if they couldnt find a way to reheat some saugage to put on my margherita pie) im completely disappointed because that young lady knew 100% that she made the mistake.. I would never order a margherita pizza because I need some type of topping hence why I tried to pay extra for the sausage.. not only that but she clearly told me the wings were breaded when they were not.. I changed my order from 12 to 6 because of that.. smh.. completely disappointed in the customer service.. I will never come back to this place ever!!! read more
