EXTREMELY RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT MAXWELL THE CLEANER. I dropped off two dresses here-one was mine and the other was for a visiting family member from New Zealand. Drop-off was easy, but the pickup was a frustrating and completely unprofessional, degrading experience. When I came to collect the dresses, I told the woman working that I wanted to pay for my dress with cash and the other with a credit card. She refused to process the transaction, saying she couldn't split payments they would have to have been on separate slips.....I argued this with her multiple times. I then asked for change for a $50 and her sarcastic response was: "How much change do you want?" I clarified I just needed change for the $50 I had just handed her. She refused again, saying she didn't have enough in the register, then told me...very rudely---to "Come bank another time to collect your dresses when you can pay." I was shocked. I ended up handing her my credit card just to get it over with. As I turned to retrieve our very expensive dresses worn to my son's wedding, I noticed she had moved them around the circular rack so I couldn't reach them. Petty, unprofessional behavior. I would not recommend Maxwell the Cleaner to anyone. There are plenty of other dry cleaners who understand the basics of respect and customer service-----this is not one of them. Additionally their prices are very high $74.08 for 2 dresses and one still had makeup stains on it and the off the shoulder snaps on the other were undone and backwards. read more

I really appreciate the same day and drive-through service here, especially during COVID when I'm trying to minimize interactions and time indoors (outside of my home), but we've had major issues with their quality control that led us to bring our business elsewhere. 1. Cleaning is really inconsistent. My husband has had items come back with things like deodorant stains completely visible and very removable with a basic cleaning, but somehow not addressed. It almost seemed like they'd used one of those at home dryer refresh bags, where the shirt smelled right, and was pressed, but clearly had not actually been cleaned. 2. The frequency that Maxwell the Cleaner damages buttons on my husband's shirts, and the haphazard efforts they make when they do try to repair them (often using the wrong size or color of button, or placing it misaligned with the button hole) is unacceptable. The damage to expensive shirts, plus the cost of the cleaning, plus the hassle of having to bring things back to them to do it right (the second time) is just not worth it. I wish I could recommend these folks, but the cost of doing business with them way outweighed the convenience. read more

I am finished with this place. I rarely complain but I have to warn you all. Check your tickets. Tonight I got charged AGAIN Special Pricing because my shirts needed special handling. Well these are the same shirts that have been laundered through the cleaners over 2 dozen times since I moved here. The first shirt was labeled Special Hand ironing 9.00 because it's Polyester. It's a 60% Cotton / 40 % Polyester shirt. The same as every other shirt (5) that day. All from the same manufacturer. You don't have to special handle cotton/Polyester shirts. Tonight I get hit again for 2 shirts. One said it's spandex (I don't wear spandex). It's another of my Shirts that's been laundered over 2 dozen times there. The young guy I was complaining to saying it's not spandex said the instructions are inside the shirt. Yes, it was and said 98% cotton 2% elastic. Machine wash warm. That's not spandex nor required special ironing. I think Maxwell the Cleaner is trying to take me and Probably you to the cleaners. This is outrageous. It takes over 3 weeks for the manager to call and he, Andy, said it's Polyester. No it's a cotton poly blend. Terrible service. People aren't smart enough to read the labels! No one there to make a decision and treat the customer right. I've had it. Time to try a new laundry. Check your charges. Your T-Shirt might be cleaned as cashmere. The second shirt I was charged for was aid to be silk. It was a 55/45 silk/Cotton blend, and has been laundered there before as well. It has stains all over it that it didn't have before. Bottom line, based on what they did to my clothes, I will NEVER USE THIS DRY CLEANER again. Let me explain. I actually used to think this dry cleaner was great: open early/late, fast turnaround times, relatively inexpensive. However, when you give your clothes to a dry cleaner, it should be safe to expect to get them back clean, and roughly in the same shape they were in (albeit cleaner) as when you left them. Not here. A photo or two will clearly illustrate why I won't be coming back. One of these shirts was an anniversary gift from my wife last year, and is (was) a very nice dress shirt. Despite what the owner said, quite rudely, it was a fairly new shirt (easy to remember when I received it, natch, given the tie to my anniversary). The other was a couple of years old, but still in nice enough shape that I wore it to work regularly. And it wasn't just these two shirts. All of my other shirts started showing fraying around the cuffs and the collars. Buttons were broken off, regularly, and in some cases, dissimilar replacements sewn onto the wrong places on the cuffs. Caveat emptor, and never, EVER again for me. It's worth a little more to me to know I'll actually get my shirts back with them being shredded (see photos). read more

I just had to share this experience. I had been coming here for a few years now off and on and I came to drop off some clothes and the lady that is working at the front desk was extremely rude when accepting my clothes. I asked her is everything okay and she tells me that I promised her coworker that I was going to hire her to clean my house. I said that you are mistaking me for another person. We clean our own house. It was really strange and awkward. I just asked for my clothes back and left. Really sad about it all because it was so convenient for me here. Obviously somebody there has a side hustle and I am wondering if the owner knows about this. I hope the manager can reach out to me and has a remedy. read more

We used Maxwell's to press several suits for our groomsmen and family prior to our wedding. The service was excellent, the suits came out looking GREAT and everyone I corresponded with was extremely polite. I was more than happy to return after the wedding to have my husband's suit cleaned again. Eek is such a politically correct way of saying, "I don't f-ing think so". Maxwell has that big sign, the drive thru idea, pretty good service... but crap in quality. They lure you in with convenience. It's a trick, people. When I give a cleaner my clothes and point to them where the dirt is, I expect them clean it or tell me it cannot be cleaned. In this case, they said "uh-huh" in an enthusiastic way as to assure me all is well in clothes-cleaning land. A few days after retrieval, when I actually put the clothes on to wear them, I realized they just pressed the clothes making the dirt (minor stains) a more permanent decoration in the fabric. I could have done a better job myself and avoided their high fees. There are plenty of cleaners in the world. Go somewhere else. read more

I love this retro old school idea of not even having to get out of the car to do this. I pull up - - - off street into their driveway, an attendant comes up and takes my ticket or my order and bang. Its done. Short and sweet. I never used any cleaning much before, but now I am becoming a regular there. I get what I want done correctly. They are green in the clean, and they are on time. One star. After years of being a good customer, I WILL NEVER use or recommend MAXWELL the Cleaner in San Rafael again. Yesterday, the store "manager" accused me of "disrespecting" her because I had innocently dropped off my cleaning bag with laundry to do onto the floor when I was at the door entrance. At the actual door entrance, I perceived this manager lady to be busy, so I innocently dropped the bag onto the floor and was about to leave. My intention was to allow this person to deal with my cleaning at her convenience. Bizarrely, this "manager" then confronted me and stated she had held out her hand to receive my cleaning bag and this was "disrespecting her." My comment was that her statement was ridiculous. I told her I had never seen her outstretched hand, but she insisted this was untrue. I asked her if she thought I was lying. Obviously, she really felt I had trespassed upon her, and she was angry. This wildly inappropriate incident led me to ask to speak to the owner, Andy. Not possible. Apparently, this owner lives 2-3 hours away and rarely comes into the business. I subsequentlycalled MAXWELL the Cleaner that afternoon and left the owner a message to please call me about this incident. Owner Andy did not initially return my phone call, but when he eventually did call me back, he proceeded to defend his employee and suggest maybe I had actually "disrepected" her. He informed me that no one except myself has every complained about this lady before. Okay, but maybe she was having a bad day? I expressed to Andy that I have lived and worked in Marin for the past 40+ years. My own small business is located nearby in San Rafael. We have employees, customers, and understand how to interact with the public. In my opinion, I'm not inconsiderate of others and certainly recognize the importance of good human relations. Andy chose to not acknowledge my legitimate complaint. I was surprised tp read several other reviews of MAXWELL the Cleaner are quite negative. It does make sense to me now. I'm leaving this review because I'm really surprised at the low average Yelp rating. We've tried a few cleaners in the area and no one can beat Maxwell when you consider their reasonable prices, the convenience of the hours, and the friendly, helpful people. We've used them for years, and although we tried a few others when the Larkspur Landing location closed (San Rafael is not as convenient for us), we were very disappointed with other cleaners and now happily drive the extra distance to San Rafael for the great service at Maxwell. The cleaners charged to hand press a men's shirt that did not require this service at triple the price of regular shirt. Manger is always out or not working when I tried calling 3 times and has not called back to discuss in 10 days. I had been a customer for several years. ohhhhh well here I go again. Odd man out. I like Maxwell's very much... I pay a lot for my cashmere sweaters and shawls and I really like the way they handle them. I like getting each one in a seperate bag and folded just right so that I can take them off the hangers and store in my drawer. I've only been going for a couple of years Expensive..... YES.... not good if you are on a cleaning budget at all... But again they are the only place I have found that. 1. My clothes don't smell like cleaning solution when I get them back. 2. Each item is hung with care. 3. Drive up, drop off, and pop trunk and they load em up for me. 4. Just give em my phone number and all my 411 is in their system. ZERO stars would be more accurate. I've waited a long time to write this review. I wear black cotton dress shirts for work. I dry clean them so they stay black, and last a long time. The shirts don't cost that much... BUT it's stupid to wreck them in the laundry. I've tried saying it a million different ways to every person that's taken my clothes. The earnest young Latino kid was the only person that even appeared to give a crap (edit: younger dude with peach fuzz mustache). Half the time I got the fake ass smile and nod. Repeated failure on their end to Launder instead of dry clean. Felt like 25% of the time...Maybe it was one in ten... It was incredibly poor, an absolute OUTLIER in terms of bad service for any type of business. Fast forward to tonight. On a long run of successful "Dry clean everything please". Up my shirt game this year (over payed at Nordys... but they're nice) Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd they just put two, $150 shirts through the laundry. THANKS I'm out. read more

I really don't like this place. My wife keeps bringing my shirts here because it's convenient, but take my word for it, Maxwell's blows. They have demolished buttons on my shirts multiple times, and I'm no seamstress... so if I'm missing a button I either wear the shirt anyway and look like a hobo or chuck it in the goodwill pile. The few times I go in here, the employees, most likely underpaid, seem to be the type to say "OK, sure, no problem" and then completely ignore instructions, focusing instead on cranking through as much dry cleaning as possible. I give one star for the hours of operation. But no matter how many times I tell them to "launder shirts only" they find at Least 2 shirts to dry clean and charge $7.70 instead of $6.00 for laundering. I find this funny because all the shirts are the same, made out of the same material, the only difference is the color.
