We just had our entire laundry given to another client! Maxwell staff still charged us.... Our clothes still missing

I have had good experiences with this place. I think the prices could be lower, but how much rent you figure they are paying for that location. Personally I would not like to be around perc all day, any more than I would like to be working in a garage...there are health and insurance costs associated with jobs most people don't want to do. I have never had a problem with garments at Maxwell's. I respect people's experiences to the contrary, I just wonder out of x garments cleaned, how many lead to complaints such as in previous reviews. Yelp doesn't reflect that. read more

Ok- here is the low down Maxwell gets my very difficult to obtain total GoodHouskeeping stamp of approval! Ultra convenient drive through (they actually come out to your car!) open ridiculous hours ( like 9 to 9pm) which just makes it better than any other cleaner I have used convenience wise. Now let's talk service: best ever, period! If you happen to take your items home and something is not perfect-they will TOTALLY take care of you. Andy and his staff want to make things right and they do! The cost is really average for very thorough cleaning. Terrible today! Overcharged for wash and fold and when asked to please re weigh it, the man stated yelling at me. I said the ladies always weigh in front of me and I usually weekly get just 10 pounds. Finally , he did and he was over charging me! And the clothes aren't that clean. I would give this place 0 stars but I can't! I submitted four shirts, 3 to be laundered, 1 for dry cleaning. When I got the bill for $46.30 (!!!), I was told that Maxwell's decided that all four shirts needed to be dry cleaned instead of only one. That was not their decision to make and I should not have to pay for them disobeying my instructions! He even tried to tell me that the other 3 shirts HAD to be dry cleaned. THEY WERE 100% COTTON!! They are also price gauging since the other location has closed, they now think they can charge almost triple the amount for one simple shirt to be dry cleaned. I have been very patient with this place and have been using them for over 10 years but I have had enough. The reason I have used them are the hours and the knowledge I do not need to get out of my car. At this point, however, I am willing to walk across the Sahara Desert to find a dry cleaner. So why you say? . Well, since I travel so much I truly prefer folded shirts,. There is never enough room for hangered shirts and when you get to your destination, when on a hanger the shirts are almost always wrinkled. So every time I go there I make sure to tell them I wanted my shirts folded. That on top of the folded shirts being in my profile. Well, tonight was the last straw, since I am heading on a trip tomorrow. These folks are about 19 percent on getting my requests correct. So, under the Mendoza line (I am an expert of knowing who the Mendoza line was named after btw). To make matters worse, this evening, when the shirts came back on a hanger I asked to have the shirts folded. The fellow said it would take a minute. Maybe 10 minutes. So, when he came back with the folded shirts and put them in the backseat I headed on my way. When I got home I realized that he did not fold all of the shirts. Give me a SPRING BREAK. So I will give them a break for the rest of the century, Enough of this over the hill, used to be and pathetic dry cleaner. read more

this place is super duper convenient - open from 6-10 seven days a week, starndard turnaround time is 24 hours, and they have drive through service. HOWEVER: none of that makes a bit of difference if the clothes don't come back clean! I swear sometimes it seems like they just take my suits, douse them in perchlorate, press them then put them in plastic. Stains? Still there! However, they are still going to take my $15+ dollars for "cleaning it". No thankee! read more

I have been using Maxwell SR since it 1st opened, long before the current owner took over (12 years ago). No more. Took in my wife's $300+ jacket for cleaning with shirts: $119 total charges. When I picked it up, the employee mentioned they had some trouble with the jacket, it had frayed. I said I would check with my wife. At home, she discovered that the material around the collar had separated from the woven material, and was frayed and puckered. I took it back the next day with the receipt and showed it to the clothes-hop who was clueless on what to do. There was no one there who could make a decision and we needed it for trip leaving that week, and told him I would take it to nearby tailor we used and get the repair receipt for reimbursement, which I did. At my suggestion he took cell phone pix which we agreed accurately showed the damages & photos of the receipt and repair cost. Claim filed; notice given. (Our tailor suggested the garment stuck to the cleaning machine and ripped when it was opened) I went back next day and luckily (?) the owner or manager was there. He was defensive, rude, confrontational, dismissive and aggressive: all at once. In fairness to him I got there quickly due to his attitude. His "explanation" was he needed to see it himself; had no info; had not seen the pictures; didn't I know that he could not come in more than 1x a week; it had to be cleaned per the instructions; didn't I understand that it could be machine or person error; he did not recognize the name of the man who took the pix; was not interested in calling him; and how could I prove what it was like when brought in, and/or when picked up! His employee had mentioned it when i picked it up! He basically accused me of fabricating the entire thing to beat him out of $45 repair cost.. I pointed out my $60K MBZ 550SL, and said "you are kidding?" I was furious, had used the f- work once, which I thought both appropriate and judicious and apologized for that . I went to the tailor got the jacket, she had not started on it yet, and took it back: elapsed time 15 minutes. He examined it, had no excuse, said it was done per the instructions, there was a process, I needed to understand. He then asked my age (?) which I gave as 80+ years. Amazingly considering my understanding of the Asian cultures respect for seniors, he launched into a lecture on my failure to show respect for him! (He cannot be 50) By this time we were inches apart and I just said, See ya, I don't care, he was not worth it. As I got into my car he said something to the effect that I obviously was used to doing things "the old way." Go figure that. I said I would send him the repair bill (earlier I had offered to accept a cleaning credit against future business) and he said nothing. In summary he basically called me a liar for the claim of damage, of attempting to rip him off, and not once admitted or suggested it might have been his company's fault. He refused to check with his employee to verify what she had seen, or call his other employee who had the pix. There is a process he said. Sure there is, only go near the place 1x a week, avoid the issues, and if caught, just do nothing about it, it must be someone else's fault. Do not go near this place if you value your finer clothes , or any of them if you read the other postings. Strength in numbers folks. I brought a pair pants and something that needed to be stitched to Maxwell's. I ended up being charged an arm and a leg, plus they did a crappy job. Wait! There's more. They dry cleaned them when I didn't even ask them to and I was charged for it . My card went through before I even realized what was going on and now they won't even give me my money back (a partial refund makes sense, right?!). I have to wait until the manager is in. Get this, the manager is never in. Don't bring your stuff to this place. The convenience isn't worth it. read more

Here's a secret...drycleaning does not have to be ridiculously expensive!. When living in SF I got the same blouses done for $3.00 each at my great little Chinese ma&pa around the corner..Maxwell's charged me $7.95. I just picked up my 6 pieces of clothing for $77...uh..wha?? Sure it's convenient to drive through, but I'd rather go down the street, park for free and get my clothes done with the same quality for a lot cheaper. You pick and choose. read more

Growing up in marin, I've always used Maxwell cleaners. They have the best hours, I mean even restaurants aren't opened until ten in sleepy marin county. That plus a quick 24 hour turnaround is fantastic! And the convenient drive-thru eliminates your parking worries. That being said my last three experiences have really made me question the $15 price tag per dress. I work for a specialty clothing store in the Village. I have always referred my clients to them, and have sent them tons of business over the years. A few months ago I brought them two of my favorite black work dresses to be dry cleaned and pressed. When I came to pick them up the next day they didn't look pressed. I complained and after a few minutes they agreed to re-dryclean them. Which to me, is no bonus that I get to drive back, have my garments exposed to the chemicals twice and be without my dresses another day. I still believed all would be fixed, so the following day I dropped of the third of the same dress. I try to keep them in rotation as I wear them to work so often. When I picked up the first two they still didn't look clean and they weren't pressed in the chest area. The lining at the top was coming up and not sitting down correctly. I pointed it out and after 15 minutes of explaining that it needed to be pressed, which you would think was obvious since you could see the lining. They agreed to repress the two dresses. I then pointed out that hey had the third dress, and to check that one as well. The drive-thru is convenient, but that doesn't mean I want to keep driving back. Jump to the day that I'm there to pick up for all three. Not only, do they not look any different from before,but my third dress still looks dirty! I seriously paid to have three $400 dresses for a total of $1200 in clothing to look filthy and have the lining from the chest area come undone and not lay flat. What a nightmare!! I asked to have someone call me so I could at least have these three dress re-dry cleaned. But so far, I've heard nothing. Not only will they lose me as a client, they will lose my referrals as well. Does anyone have any recommendations for a great dry cleaner? I'm in the market for a new place. read more

This place is just every generic Cleaner in disguise. The outside looks nice, but the service, and quality is poor. Not to mention incredibly over-priced. Look around before going here. There are more than 5 cleaners that are less than a block away, and 3 happen to be better. None I would give a proper recommendation for. read more

maxwell is a drive-through dry cleaner in town. seems like a great idea, eh? not. they ruined a sweater of mine, then claimed it "wasn't possible." then they offered me a discount for having to wait for a pickup, then asked for it back the next time i came by. the final straw was ruining my wedding dress when i paid them $150 to clean and preserve it. avoid this place like the plague. read more

Contrary to what Kimberly says in her review, this place *is* really as bad as the other reviews make it out to be. Probably worse. And the fact that they are a drive through in an area where parking places are plentiful - and considering that they love to lean up against your nice paint job with the bag of clothes you hand them, doesn't mitigate at all their short comings. They never seem to remember any instructions you give them. I'll ask for my shirts to be folded and they come back on hangers. And if there is a spot on anything - and unless you point it out - don't expect it to be taken out. This place looks like it is run by relatively inexperienced people who have no affinity for the cleaning business. There are much better cleaners in town. After I dumped Maxwell, I found Magnificent Cleaners, 977 Grand Avenue. They really care about what they're doing and seem knowledgeable - compared to the people at Maxwell's, who seem to have no understanding of the cleaning business. read more

Service was just fine in our few seconds of interaction--No complaints there. However, I was extremely surprised to see such a high receipt for cleaning 4 dresses. I will definitely not return for that reason. My dresses were ready the next day which wasn't of any need to me and didn't even pick them up for a few days. Simply one of the worst dry cleaners I've ever encountered. They lose clothes--some fairly old--and then demand receipts for the purchase of the clothes before they do anything. A couple of times, I've gotten clothes back that were not cleaned at all. The staff are high school kids that barely speak English, and are slow and unresponsive. And when I asked to speak with someone in charge, I got the run-around and never got a call back. Ever. Avoid at all cost. read more

The owner of this place is a jerk. My kids and I had just been rear ended at the intersection and the only safe place to pull over was in an empty parking spot at this place. Apparently, it was his spot and he wasn't too happy. We weren't blocking any cars because there weren't any. I explained to him that we'd just been in an accident (see my car), but that didn't matter. He didn't care if anyone was hurt, he just cared that this was his place of business and we had to move. This place isn't as bad as it's other reviews make it out to be. First of all, it's a drive through cleaner! How awesome is that? Every time I've gone, the service has been fast and friendly. Very good location in the heart of San Rafael. Although sometimes a line of cars will form and begin to block traffic. The service is decent and usually they have all my laundry or dry cleaning done within 24-48 hours. The price is competitive but they could benefit from offering an organic alternative to their cleaning. I recently brought in a suit with some major stains and they were able to remove all of it and looking like new again. Ill continue to use them in the future. read more

They do an excellent job on my shirts. Not only do they come back pressed perfectly, but the cleaning actually brought out the color in an older dress shirt I have. The collars are straightened with cardboard inserts - nice touch. I *did* have the same experience as another yelper when I added a sweater to my order without checking the prices. I was shocked to see how expensive sweater cleaning is here. But for shirts, they do a great job that I think is worth a little more money AND they're open LATE! One thing to note: If the manager decides that a shirt requires a hand press - even if it's just a regular material shirt - they unilaterally charge you more for the item (the same price of a linen item, around $7.) That, to me, is poor judgment on the manager's part and something I've never experienced at a dry cleaner before. So I deducted a star from my original rating for being greedy. read more

That review was most favorable, and ended up in a filter, along with many other positive reviews. I certainly hope this one goes through. I am a loyal and happy customer of Maxwell the Cleaner. They provide the most convenient set up imaginable, with a drive-through location, as well as convenient hours. The fact that they are open until 10:00PM 7 days per week is fantastic! After years of avoiding this place because they had ruined a few very expensive items, I went back because of their attractive long hours. Low and behold they lost one of my favorite shirts. I know I put it in the bag and I know it did not come back home. We had a big order ($165) and we put everything away the minute we got it home so I called right away to report it missing. No one there semed to care. The owenr called me and said they didn't have my shirt and told me to "look in my closet." That is obnoxious. He told me about their 3 inspectors and how they do not send clothes home with the wrong person. Ridiculous. If you make a mistake - just say "I'm sorry, we seem to have lost your shirt, how can we make it better?" In stead, what you get is an insistance that the customer is wrong and they are perfect. I realize that parking is difficult in San Rafael. But when I pulled in to Maxwell, I had a couple texts I wanted to answer before driving thru with my laundry. So I pulled over out of the way of other drivers to safely answer two texts. That's when, after less than 30 seconds, an employee was banging on my car window. Now I won't bore you with how much I love my car and how much I dislike strangers touching it. I drive around a lot for my job and my car is my office. Its an extension of me. So HANDS OFF MY NEWLY WASHED, WAXED, AND HAND DRIED CAR. I don't go into your place of business and put chocolate covered hands all over your handiwork, do I? OK. So I rolled down my now grubby hand stained window and asked the gentleman what he needed. He looked frantic so I thought he might be in need of help. Nope. He began by saying "get out of my parking space! " I said," oh, am I in an assigned spot? I didn't know. " he frantically explained that the parking was for customers only. I tried three times to explain that I WAS a customer but by the time he bothered to listen, I was so frustrated that I just started at him in disbelief. Then I explained I was no longer a customer. I love the convenience of a drive through and the fast turn around time, but the cleaning is mediocre and the prices are pretty ridiculous. I just picked up 4 sweaters and my bill was $44. They charged me $10.95 per item. Even for Marin that is alot. Won't go back after today. read more

I paid around $30 to have 2 sweaters and 1 silk top cleaned - the silk top came back with a HOLE in it. Unacceptable. And overpriced. This is the second time Maxwell the Cleaner has put a hole in one of my delicate pieces. I will not be going back. read more

I have been going to this place for a few years now, and I am very satisfied with the work the employees do in taking care of my expensive clothes. I have never had a problem with them and they are so convenient. You just drive up and they come out to help you. As for the price, I wouldn't trust a place that is cheap and Maxwell IS located in San Rafael which is a pretty pricey place to live as it is. You get what you paid for and I get quality service and clean clothes for the money I pay here. read more

brought my son's jacket to have a zipper replaced. said it would be ready saturday. went to pick up today on friday after the due date and the jacket was not done because they didn't have the zipper in stock. Made the mistake of dropping off a large load here without asking for their prices - over $50 for one suit and twelve shirts? They are not a LITTLE expensive folks, they are thieves. My last straw incident: They turned my expensive silk shirt from gold to puke green, and the owner refused to even discuss a resolution. He got down right abusive. We just called to get a quote on having 4 identical, brand new shirts pressed (making very clear that we ONLY wanted them pressed) and were given a price of just under $3.00 each shirt, 10 minutes later we show up with the shirts and were told $7.00 each to press and that we never told them we wanted them pressed. Not only did we say we only wanted them pressed but we said we did not want them cleaned. Still $7.00 per shirt after being given a quote of less than half that price by the same person 10 minutes prior. You couldn't pay me to go back to that place. No wonder you have such a bad reputation in San Rafael. read more

I have been taking my clothes here for years and I absolutely love the quality of work and I enjoy seeing the employees. They always treat me with respect and make me feel that my clothes are in good hands. They even took care of my wedding dress before my wedding. I love the same day service. The comment of the "questionable legality status" was uncalled for and unnecessary. The employees are hard working and respectful each time I take in my clothes and they always receive me with a smile regardless of what typed of day or people they have to deal with.
