What a disappointment!!! After reading all the great reviews I was very excited to try this place. My husband and I had dinner there tonight. Let's start with the good dish May's potato cakes. Those are delicious but everything else was just not that great. The taste of Ireland was one disappointment after the other. The chicken pot pie was tasteless, the shepherd pie was uninspiring and the stew was just horrible (beef was completely dry!!!). Then I ordered the soup of the day, roasted tomatoes with cheddar which could have been good if it was not so salted that it was inedible. My husband had the Ruben it was okay but with so much meat that it was dry, not a good balance of ingredients. May Kelly's got 2 starts because the staff was nice and the decor is amazing. read more

May Kelly's seemed like the perfect spot for our first night in town for a snowboard weekend. I am Irish, passport and all and was craving some cold Guinness and a light bite. The hostess was charming and found us a nice table in the back The place is full of Irish memorabilia. Our waitress came and took our order for beverages and later, our sandwich order. I ordered fish tacos and my man ordered a Reuben. 45 minutes into the night we were wondering if we were forgotten. Folks around us got food fast and finished whilst we waited. Our waitress never came over and was barely able to hailed but finally, she came and asked what we needed. We asked about our food! She said it was coming and cheerfully left. At 55 minutes we got up to leave when our food arrived. Too bad we stayed. My fish taco was odd (more like a burrito all mashed together) and didn't taste good. I devoured the tasteless fries due to hunger. My man's Reuben had a 1/2" inch slice of meat. It was awkward to eat. Our mood was dimmed due to the wait so we decided to leave. We took our food with us thinking it might taste better when our mood was not so foul from a ridiculous wait. Having been in food service, a check in and notice the kitchen was backed up (if that was the case) would have gone a long way. Towards the end as the bill came, our server perked up and was quite friendly and suddenly available. I made my man tip her 15% before tax. He was not happy. In retrospect, we should have left 10%. Oh by the way, we drove by the next day and saw the color of the building. Dear GOD, it's baby poop brown!! Ugh...never again.. read more

A totally forgettable meal. The meatloaf was a solid brick of burger meat wrapped in bacon and painted with a dark brown gravy with maybe a couple of mushroom slices. The highlight was the mashed potatoes. I guess quantity is more valued than quality. The entrance this evening took us by the restrooms and it was like walking through a portacan lineup. I guess they may have been some plumbing issues. Do not notice it when we left. On the very positive side the wait and serving staff were friendly and properly attentive. What a shame. Just chiming in with another positive review for May Kelly's Cottage. We are a family of six now (11, 7, and two toddler twins), in the White Mountains for summer vacation. The warm Irish hostess (May Kelly herself?) (how are you, pet?) led us to a semi-private room in the back with a view of the mountains, which was perfect for us. It is a very homey, friendly place, with antique advertisements tacked on the walls everywhere, eclectic and mismatched furniture. I wandered through the place with one of the toddlers. The food was absolutely first rate--very good Irish comfort food with modern touches. Shepherd's Pie, Chicken Pot Pie, beef stew, all excellent, and great left-overs. Seems like a great bar, too, and a wonderful place to end up after a hike or day of skiing. We all felt great! Thank you! read more

After many years in NC passing by this place, we finally stopped for dinner (based in part on reviews here -- thanks Yelp!!). The food was great. The beef stew was divine. The cottage pie was authentic and had a great consistency and flavor. The chicken pie was really tasty and had a huge flaky pastry on top. We also had wings which got two thumbs up. The decor was definitely quirky and really added to the uniqueness of the place. In an area filled with average to poor pub food, this place really stands apart as it offers an excellent Irish pub experience. read more

Had a wonderful dinner here last night while in Conway for our anniversary. We went at 7 pm on a Saturday night and we're seated after about 15 minutes. Crowded with an old time Irish atmosphere and covered in signs and decorations from the old days of Conway. I had the meatloaf which was phenomenal with the mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy. Would definitely get again! My wife had the turkey dinner which was equally delicious and generously portioned. The waitress was very attentive and we were very happy. read more

I came here on a Saturday evening with a large group of 6 adults. When we arrived around 5pm, there were not many customers and we were seated quickly. It then took an extremely long time for our drinks to come out (frightening sign for the rest of the meal). It then took a long time for our bread to come to the table. When our meals arrived there were several issues. The worse was probably that my sister had ordered a hamburger well done and received a rare burger. When we flagged down the server to let her know, she made some comment along the lines of "Typical of this kitchen". Umm, okay. French onion soup must be from a can. Mashed potatoes are instant. The decor is outdated. And the service. Oh. My. Gosh. The service. Does it hurt to smile? The young ladies serving and running the food to the tables rarely smiled and if they did it seemed like one of those sarcastic fake smiles. A guest shouldn't have to flag down the server routinely. This was a cute little spot in North Conway. The restaurant is filled with a hodge podge of collections and antiques, but in a cozy sort of way. There is a lovely view of the mountains, and the owners are on site and available. The menu is interesting and offers a variety of good Irish foods. My husband and I were very pleased with our meals. He got the pulled pork and I had a fantastic corned beef rueben. Given the choices around May Kelly's, I would definitely recommend this cozy little joint if you're looking for a nice atmosphere and some good home-cooked tasting food. read more

This might be one of my favorite places to go to in the whole world, and I have been to many. We try to go at least twice a year when we vacation in North Conway. The best, home made, fresh and delicious food! The most warm and admiring atmosphere....love all the antiques decorating the restaurant. After entering Delaneys and being greeted to a large loud young crowd we decided to find another place. A 45 min wait in a college bar atmosphere was not what us young 50's people wanted. Right next door we found May's. The local guy at hotel actually highly suggested the place so we went in. We were say immediately. 3 of us ordered our drinks, 1 was struggling for ideas so the waitress brought over the bartender! How cool is that!!! Drinks were great. 3 ginger pour of Johnnie Black for only $7! Yup $7!!! I had the Haddock oven broiled and started with the French onion soup. Both were great. Wife started with a house salad that could have fed 3-4 people! She had the crusted salmon. I'm not a big salmon guy but this dish was incredible. Without a doubt a slam dunk dinner! read more

I was really looking forward to trying this place after reading the reviews online. We were the only people at the bar, a few other stragglers at the restaurant, but it was pretty quiet. We went for lunch and decided to stick with traditional Irish fare. I ordered the meatloaf, my date ordered the mixed grill. It took 40 minutes to get our food. Okay, no biggie, we were just hanging out. Gave us time to look around and comment on all the interesting knick knacks covering the place. My meatloaf was like a brick. Granted, it was a big brick. But it was smothered in a salty, brown gravy that could've been McCormick. And the bacon it was wrapped in, didn't seem to be cooked enough. Honestly, I've had much better meatloaf. The mashed potatoes were good, although there wasn't enough on the plate in comparison to the amount of meatloaf. The side was a ramekin of plain (steamed?) carrots- very uninspiring. My date said the steak was good, and he liked the fries, but said the rest was nothing special. So for two lunches that were just okay, and we each had 2 draft beers, with tip, it was about $65. Refreshing to see an Irish pub serving traditional Irish dishes. Shepherd's pie made with lamb. Mixed grill with real Irish bacon, black and white pudding and bangers.
