Mama is the reason why I started coming here. She normally comes here after her break from work, but this place is a really good. The surface is always really kind. This the same guy who waits on us all the time. I can't remember his name, but he is fantastic!!! The food is always a 10 out of 10 I always get the same thing so I can't recommend anything else but what you've seen in the picture lol but let me tell you about this bowl right here the food!! 10-10! The steak and chicken looked like leftovers from other dishes... also not enough lettuce, sour cream, etc to make more than 2 tacos. I figured it had been about 5 years since I ate here, and based on the date of my last review, it was! Time for an update, and I'm happy to report that La Cocina de Mama is still a solid restaurant choice. We dropped in for an early dinner without a reservation, and we were pleased to be able to be seated immediately. Our server quickly took drink orders and delivered them back to the table. The menu is huge, and it has some good favorites (burritos, chicken tortilla soup, taco salad), and some more inventive options. They also have a gluten-free section, which makes it easy to eat GF here. I probably ate too many chips (the salsa was flavorful without being too spicy), but I still thoroughly enjoyed my entree of Camarones Escondido. The server confirmed my great choice when I ordered. Tender chicken breast covered with sauteed spinach, shrimp and a cheese sauce. It hit the spot, and the ample portion size meant that I had delicious leftovers to enjoy the next day. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I sat at the bar and ordered a sangria ($6). It was a good sangria but the swirl margarita was even better ($7.50). I did learn they have a happy hour! I believe from 3-7. For dinner I decided to get a cup of the soup de tortilla ($5.99) and the salmon tacos ($16.99). I was hungry but did not finish it all. There were 3 salmon tacos plus a side of rice and black beans. The soup was delicious and full of flavor with crispy tortilla strips on top! The tacos were good too. This is my first time here. I happened to randomly see the place when I was looking around for Mexican restaurant. I would consider this to be relatively upscale Mexican with some culinary refinement. The menu is quite diverse, and I will post pictures. It was a difficult decision, but I ordered Cochinita Pibil, which is a pork dish with Mayan tradition with rice, black beans, and plantains. All were excellent! My server Artemio was excellent and friendly. The only slight negative was the fact that mixed drinks were fairly expensive and weak, but that didn't take away much from an overall very positive experience. Asked for flour tortillas, got corn. Took forever for the waiter to bring out the correct beans and the tortillas. Chile relleno, as well as the rest of the food, very, very bland. Finally, when the bill came I was over charged $1.00 for the top shelf Margarita and $4.00 for the Steak Poblano dish. I addressed it with the waiter and he indicated he would place a credit on my bill because he did not have time to mess with the cost, credited me $4.50. No words, paid the bill and left. We like this Mexican restaurant because it's family-friendly. This was my 2nd time visiting La Cocina De Mama -- both times with family that included a 2 and a 3-year old. The staff was very pleasant and very accommodating of our party and made sure that the kids had tortilla chips as a starter and that the kids were served first. The tortilla chips were warm and crisp and the salsa was really good. As with most parties of four (6 with the kids), the adults all ordered something different and the servers got all the orders down perfectly. The food was really good, the service was excellent and the prices are pretty reasonable. This is a really nice, family-friendly Mexican destination. read more

With very few photos on Yelp about this place, I expected it to be like a fast-casual taqueria. Surprisingly its interior design is more elegant and, dare I say, upscale than I would have placed for a Mexican restaurant. Normally I'm not one to take pictures of interiors, but it was such a surprise, I thought it would help to update Yelp since it was a wonderful discovery. Clean, spacious, and lots of seating. Ideal for groups and friends wanting a tasty meal while enjoying their time out. ~~Food~~ It's extremely rare that I, a native Californian, bestow a 5-star rating to any Mexican food establishment outside of the West or Southwest. I either find a lot of fast-casual cheap-y places or trendy fusion places...so it's hard to please my palate when I want Mexican food closer to home cooking. With its somewhat upscale vibe, I was sure that La Cocina De Mama was going to be a trendy fusion place. No, I was pleasantly proved wrong. I ordered the mole enchiladas since I normally don't see mole on most menus. The mole was a sweetened, thick sauce smothering the pork enchiladas. The pork had a beautiful roasted crispness on the outer edges (not from over cooking or burning). And usually the sides' quality is skimped to fill you. Well, the chips were thick and crisp, which I enjoy more than narrowing down on salsas. I'd rather have high quality chips any day. Just be careful since they are so crisp to not hurt yourself (I'm in dentistry, so I know when food accidents will happen). The Spanish rice and beans were great as well. Usually I'm impartial to either, but I liked these a little better than other places. Lastly, as a true measure, I ordered tamales to-go. Man, I miss having tamales for special occasions and I don't see them often on menus. I ate them a day later and geez, each tamale was enormous. They give you 2, but each one equaled that of my 3 enchiladas. It didn't seem like the typical tamales I've had before, but nonetheless, they exceeded my expectations for leftovers. Oh, and they pack you a whole paper bag of chips and salsa. Heck yeah! The food here is absolutely delicious. We have now visited three times and I have not been disappointed yet. My husband sticks to the cochinita pibil and refuses to order anything different and I don't mind picking off of his plate when he does. I have enjoyed the tacos, and just recently tried the carnitas plate that was perfect. The meat was cooked to perfection and paired with a tasty side sauce, crema salad, corn tortillas, rice and beans. While some may see menu prices and experience a little shock, I find that the portions and quality were more than comparable to the price. This place is awesome! Not a very big place and tucked in the corner of a plaza so it doesn't draw a lot of attention but word needs to spread. I am not a huge fan of Tex-Mex so I am always a little skeptical when going to a "Mexican" restaurant. Everything about this place said typical Tex-Mex restaurant but it definitely was NOT. I ordered the camarones a la diabla because that was one of my favorite dishes when I lived in Mexico. Holy smokes it was delicious! The shrimp were nice and big and the diabla flavor was outstanding. The dish came with a scoop of rice and I ended up mixing it into the shrimp sauce because it made a great combination. It was definitely spicy so be warned but the heat did not overpower the flavor. The dish also came with fried plantains! Yes people, FRIED PLANTAINS and they were heavenly. My co-worker order the fajitas and the amount of chicken and chorizo was remarkable. He could not stop raving about how good it was. He ended up devouring the entire plate! Our server was fantastic and very friendly. He didn't just take our order and bring us food but engaged us in conversation which made our experience even more enjoyable. This is weird and I know it before I even write it but they had one of the nicest bathrooms I have ever seen. And it gets even weirder: it smelled like a tropical vacation!! I'm serious. I could have eaten my dinner in there and been totally ok with it. We were not expecting much when we entered but we could not stop talking about how good it was for the rest of the night. So underwhelmed..... I was excited after seeing reviews. Well, I asked for tacos only and ordered 2 pastor & 1 Asada. I received a visit a few moments later telling they couldn't do that because they come packaged in amounts for three??? Wow, so I decided on pastor. I was then brought and charged for the meal with rice and beans. I had specifically asked for a lunch special and told the tacos were available. The tacos were just okay and rice and beans not worth eating. The salsa was watery tasting and no flavor really. Our experience was disappointing. However, the margaritas were terrific (I had the jalapeno margarita!). I typically love the tortilla soup but tonight the soup was not up to par. Our meal was tasty but not as good as the pictures for sure. The most disappointing was the service. We sat and ate our meal and talked to catch up with each other but as soon as we nearly finished our meal, they brought the check! No prompting for dessert, which I had already planned to order (lost sale!). After paying we sat for about another hour talking but NO ONE asked us if we needed anything else. What a huge mistake I made by waiting so long! I ordered the Carnitas for lunch and was thoroughly pleased with the entire meal from the rice and beans to the corn tortillas and the spicy red tomatilla sauce that came along with it. The portion of Carnitas (as well as the sides) was very large for the $8.99 price and everyrhing was near perfect.
