This is a small Chinese place. It's not fancy. It's a little divey. But it's inexpensive and fast. I came here for lunch with a friend. The low cost and quick service were exactly what we were looking for. We split an order of steamed potstickers. I also had chicken lo mein. Both were prepared to order and were pretty good. Food was as expected for takeout, chicken was actually crispy which I appreciated. It was flavorful, well portioned and packaged. The egg rolls were crispy and nice sized. I'm giving this review 4 stars for the food alone. I purchased my order to dine in and here is my experience. Cons: The place is small and not great for dining in. I sat by the door which was very cold and uncomfortable. Please call your order in as the wait may be a little time especially if your on your lunch break. King Day was coming to an end and the temperature was dropping. I dropped by Mayflower for some Wings and Fries with M(a/u)mbo sauce. I ordered a three piece per usual and was taken aback by the price. Why wouldn't the Carryout in Tenleytown be more expensive, obviously. I mean, they also operate without bulletproof glass. I had gotten hip to Mayflower from a Complex piece I read, awhile back. I stopped by once a few years back but I'm never up Tenleytown--never. I didn't want to sit down, though there are seats and a couple of tables. In true Carryout fashion there was no heat on. Corners just got to be cut. Plus, the people are very friendly and happy to accommodate special requests. A couple of things: Sometimes the beef and broccoli has been broccoli with some beef. Order extra. If you want enough sauce to cover the rice, you should ask for extra. But on the whole, there is a reason they have been around forever. I did manage to eat it all and it wasn't offensive, just milder than I would have liked. When I say "spicy," I mean something that will really be flaming; this wasn't near to that. Everything we ordered from this place was terrible. Fried dumplings had thick bao-like skins and the contents tasted like cat food. General Tso's Chicken came out sweet and not spicy. We live in Tenleytown and order from Mayflower every now and then. They have really good veggie fried rice, chicken teriyaki skewers and French fries of all things. I ordered cashew chicken today for the first time. Flavor-wise it was good but it was almost entirely celery and carrots. OK amount of cashews but almost no chicken. The carrots and celery were way undercooked. Ironically, there's a picture of the dish right here on Yelp. I think it proves my point. read more

I was so hungry so I took a couple of bites thinking it was just the spice smell but after that my stomach went to hell. At least their teriyaki chicken is decent. In the past I'd say two or three stars, but this recent delivery was the best food I've ever received from them. Loved it. We ordered two lunch specials. Despite the delay, the food was hot, very tasty, and amazingly, their fried rice isn't the usual dry-tasting leftover stuff. We've even snacked on it. The only reason not a 5--star rating is that they now put the main course in the same microwavable(!) container as the rice. The rice sucks up the main's sauce/gravy almost completely. That needs to change. But, we'll order from them again - especially because they do their own delivering, and it's free over $15. No Uber or Door Dash, etc. fee-involved service. And, their own menu is less expensive & more varied than shown on Uber. read more

Everyone else, please keep poorly reviewing Mayflower and not telling other people about it because it is the best kept secret take out place in DC. It's not as good as NYC Chinese food, but I think it's the closest we have in the area. I know that isn't saying a whole lot because DC Chinese food is generally bland and disgusting, but regardless, it should be said. I have built a rapport with the young cashier who knows me and my order by now because he always get it right. On a plant-based diet, the TVP dishes (especially the sesame TVP) are really good. Vegetarian spring rolls are delicious. For extra bonus points, get their broccoli but brown sauce substituted for the garlic sauce. They always oblige when I ask for more duck sauce packets. Which is always. The other reviewers who say the owners/employees are racist just don't understand the culture difference. Wake up sheeple, and eat some Mayflower. read more

We spent $20 on grubhub for this food. It arrived over an hour later (not terrible but not ideal) and was the WORST food I've ever eaten. My huband got buffalo wings (BUFFALO WINGS PEOPLE!) and fries that were so GROSS (how do you ruin buffalo wings?) He took one bite and had to throw the whole tray away! The chicken was gummy and the wings had a disgusting flavor that is hard to describe--fatty and greasy and just....ew! It didn't even taste like buffalo sauce. They brought his fries in a closed plastic constainer with condensation and they were wilted and completely flavorless (again, ew). My food was also GROSS. I got the sweet and sour chicken which tasted like dipping flavorless fried chicken bits into ketchup. The side of fried rice was decent although it looked like they threw everything but the kitchen sink in it (it had like water crisps and pork, chicken, onions, everything....) anyway we will NEVER eat here again or waste money like this again, it was seriously barf worthy. read more

Late at night when I am in bed and I am staring at the ceiling trying to get to sleep, my mind wanders. When it wanders, I often wonder about obscure things. Things like: what is purgatory? My imagination takes over and I think of some place that is lifeless. A place that is not hostile but also not inviting. A place inhabited by soulless people who spend time themselves wondering why they are there, so much so that they seem to pay minimal attention to anyone else who also shares their purgatory. It is a place that embraces no happiness, no quality of life, no distinction between good and bad. A veritable DMV-style plane of existence. I revisited this horrible plane of existence in my waking life today when I entered Mayflower carry out. When I appeared at the counter to make my order, the man behind the counter seemed to be engaged in extensive chinese conversation with one of the cooks. It took him a while to either a)notice that I was there or b) acknowledge my presence. Like purgatory or the DMV, it is very difficult to tell whether or not people are unresponsive to you because they don't know or they don't care. The man behind the counter never made eye contact with me, smiled, or said enjoy your meal. I get the sense he spent his mental energy trying to figure why HE was there instead of why I was there. The food was the quality of food one would expect in purgatory--it was exactly what was promised. I order beef and broccoli and I got beef and broccoli. Adding spices would have demonstrated a level of enthusiasm that the place just didn't possess. Purgatory notably lacks any flavor and/or discerning characteristic. The coup de grace was the sign hanging on the wall that stated something like "food consumption is allowed for thirty minutes". In other words, eat your food and get the hell out. Such an admonition would have been just as useful if it hung up the corner of a DMV. I would fear staying in this place longer than that time any way out of fear of possibly losing my soul. Now that I have established in my waking life what purgatory looks like, that has become the total redeemable quality of the experience and there would be no purpose in returning. read more

Do not order from this restaurant until they change their current management. I say this as someone who has ordered from Mayflower successfully in the past, or at least until this past weekend. They used to be my favorite delivery spot, but that has certainly changed. In addition to ordering my usual small shrimp fried rice with extra vegetables, I ordered Kung Pao Shrimp and requested that they hold the carrots, MSG, and corn syrup; they sent me a soup with five shrimp, along with a large package of fried rice devoid of vegetables and missing most of the shrimp. I called the restaurant to request a refund or replacement, only to end up talking to a very rude manager who could not explain why the restaurant did not simply call about not being able to accommodate my request on the Kung Pao dish. This is the same restaurant that, in the past, had no problems calling me to switch from one brand of soda to another. A slight pity on losing a quick spot for lunch, but their competition will take up the slack. read more

I disagree with Tim P. I say best chinese hands down, at least in this area of town, but not to be compared to the superior Chinese you can pick up in Chinatown. I'd say they could ALMOST be up to par for belonging IN Chinatown, but I have seen some of their stuff sitting out for awhile when I've actually gone into the restaurant to order take out (so I'll agree with Tim P. on this point) which, of course, means SOMEONE got stuck with not-so-fresh food. Everything is cooked fresh, family style (no food sitting under a heat lamp)...I stopped eating Chinese 20 years ago when DC started to have awesome sushi and thai food (so much healthier, etc.) I have only ever seen asians eating in the actual resaurant.It only has 2 tables for eat in--which is perfect because it allows them to focus on delivering delicious Chinese food to your home. Good food reasonably priced, they take credit cards, service fast enough if you order by phone. Why am I giving them four stars instead of five? I wish they were open later at night. I have been going there for years and have few complaints, usually about getting orders wrong. And the few times they have they didn't seem concerned about it. Cheap, delicious (I think Chinese food tastes best when it's greasy, though!) and they always substitute the pork fried rice with chicken fried rice, no questions asked.
