I came in for the dim sum. The place was empty which is rare. I sat at the bar and was greeted immediately but I wasn't given instructions on how to order the dim sum and as a first timer, I was kind of stuck. The staff answered my questions quickly and took my order. I had the Chinese broccoli, soup dumpling and salt and pepper squid. The Chinese Broccoli wasn't good at all. Very bland and I didn't really like the oyster sauce. The soup dumplings were good. Not anything to write home about, but I'd order them again. The squid was really flavorful and it was a good portion. I also had a giant pot of oolong tea which was delicious. They take Apple Pay as well and for less than $40 it wasn't a bad lunch. --Location/Parking-- Located off Logan Circle in the busy 14th Street NW which is a popular street. I took the metro, but because of the popular street location I believe there was only street parking. --Ambience-- Chinese restaurant in the heart of DC without having to travel outside the city. This has all of the authentic Chinese food without having to go to Chinatown, which I researched is one of the best. Décor is like all other Chinese restaurants, but people come for the food and not the ambience. --Service/Staff-- The front hostess and waitress was awesome and friendly. My only concern was I had a small party of two and was seated at a big table. I didn't choose the table; it was what I was directed to. After ¼ of the way through our meal, I noticed that the late breakfast crowd was coming in, and lines were starting to form at the front. My only con was that a tall Asian man who probably was the owner was yelling near me and kept looking in my direction on such a small party at a big table. I could only guess since I believe he was speaking in Chinese, but his demeanor told us to hurry and get out because our lunch was ruined because of this rude service. --Products-- Food was awesome 5 stars, see above on the service. --Overall-- I am torn on my bad experience. I had no intention on getting this today and I'm so happy that I did! I got the special fried rice and the Peking duck and everything was so amazing! The rice is a seafood fried rice with shrimp, and scallops. So good! The location is nice and clean with plenty of seating, they also have a full bar, and the staff were very friendly. I love dim sum, and I was so happy to find that this place has a wonderful selection. I ordered several dishes and loved them all. I think my favorite was the shumai, but the crab balls were fantastic, as well. The staff were polite and friendly. The food came out quickly. I was served by mom from China and her American daughter. I liked chatting with them as the daughter was sweet and our translator. The win ton soup was a smaller size than I wanted to order but prefect for a one or two person share item. Just order more if you want family size as it's only $4.95! Wrappers were thicker than I and my daughters use but it was still pretty good and tasty. The hargow, shu Mai, and such really standard quality. And the bean curd rolls fantastic with a great thick gravy. Priced pretty good I think as things seem a dollar or two per item than in the Seattle area Legit! I'm not saying it's the best ever but very good and I'd go back in a minute! I've seen other reviews stating best Chinese in DC and that might not be a bad analysis? The best place for dim sum!! I first came here with my sister-in-law, who is Chinese. She said this was the most authentic, tasty and well priced, and she was right! We loved the food!! They have all the classics and make really good suggestions if you are looking for something that goes with one of the dishes you've ordered. The menu here does have pictures, which helps a lot if you're not familiar with the names of the dishes. The service is good, with the waiter being really helpful with suggestions, and making sure you have tea at all times, and generally what you need. The place is really spacious, well lit and cozy. One of the only classic Chinese restaurants surviving in DC, they are a real gem. And right in the heart of all the action on 14th Street, the location is perfection. I hear they offer some great dim sum day and night, but we came late on a Friday and sat at their small bar to get a late meal. Although we enjoy sitting side by side, the space is large enough that you can walk in without a reservation and get a table without worrying. The menu is huge and full of classics. We tried the sliced beef with broccoli, sliced chicken with garlic sauce, and a small side fried rice. Upon ordering, they brought small complimentary dishes of pickled radish and salted peanuts. Definitely beats bread. A nice little treat to start. The portions here were perfect for two, but not so overwhelming that we needed to take any home. Even better - the flavors were on point. The meat was thin and tender, served atop a really nice sauce. The dishes are simple but executed well, so we were very happy. Best enjoyed with a tsingtao served in a chilled glass! I like the restaurant. The dim sum is great. The prices seem really high. We went for lunch and the most surprising thing was the price. I think you may be paying for location and scarcity. The restaurant itself is nice. It was awesome to see one of the chefs folding dim sum right in the restaurant. The male manager told us that all of their beef stew with rice is supposed to be fatty, as shown in the photo, which gave me the impression that they do not use good-quality beef. When we asked for an additional table, the female manager responded, "You should be better prepared next time." I found that comment rude and inappropriate, and I told her so directly. The food itself was acceptable but significantly overpriced. More concerning was the staff's overall attitude, which felt dismissive and demeaning--particularly toward Asian customers who speak Mandarin Chinese. I went to DC to visit my daughter and wanted to surprise her by taking her to a dim sum restaurant. After much research, these guys had the highest reviews so I made the reservation. I've been to alot of dim sum shops in NYC and Chicago and their food was always great BUT we always felt like we were having to rush. Da Hong Pao was so different. No, they didn't push carts, but this restaurant is so clean, sunny and my favorite, no rush! Our server spoke great English, as well as having the menu not only in English, but the explanations were perfect. I truly appreciated the training the servers had - so kind to answer questions and made us feel like we mattered to them. The restaurant is open and decorated subtly and modern. Cleanliness matters to them, it was obvious that they take time with details and that's the sign of longevity in the restaurant business. Restrooms were clean - and I have no inkling how people park in this busy area. There must be public parking garages around here, but we took the metro. They have a pretty good and robust dim sum menu! We tried the King Prawn Dumplings which was well portioned with a juicy prawn filling, however the wrapper for ours broke, which is not a great sign of the quality of dumplings. The Bean Curd Skin Roll in Oyster Sauce was a table favorite. It was generously filled with an earthy pork filling made of woodear mushroom and other traditional add ins that made it so intensely rich and lightly salted in the oyster sauce. Each bite was savored with that dish. However, despite this not being an carte type of dim sum house, we really enjoyed other things on their written menu such as their duck noodle soup. Broth came so rich and salty, and took on the flavors of the roast duck drippings, that you can see proudly roasting on the window. I think what made this restaurant feel so special was our waiter! He was so attentive and explained each menu question we had, he also came in with some great food recommendations which is how we selected the duck noodle soup. He made sure to fill our waters frequently (even if I had just taken a big sip haha) and asked how we were doing. He also recommended we try their house tea (Da Hong Pao) when we would traditionally opt for jasmine, and we are so glad! The tea the restaurant is named after is so exquisite and had tasting notes I have never gotten out of a standard restaurant tea. It was lightly sweet and almost chocolatey, such an interesting flavor that paired so well to cleanse our palette. Their menu is quite standard, but I am glad to see a lot of Cantonese cooking techniques shine in their written menu. They have a pretty good dim sum program, but I think giving their menu a try. Each dish seemed prepared in that special Cantonese style, and its especially tasty in that round table family format. Dim sum is pretty quick and brief, but with a restaurant this big, with all the table cloths and settings I feel its best enjoyed that way. Really glad restaurants like this are standing. This is a really great place that is deep in the city that still has that nostalgic elegance of a Chinese restaurant. read more

Have worked in the area for years, walked by Da Hong Pao innumerable times, watched colleagues order from here and have never taken the time to try their dare. What a tremendous mistake. Everyone ordered a variety of dishes and each and every order received very positive reviews. Personal I opted for the Singapore noodles, the Bok Choy and Black Mushrooms and a small hot and sour soup. The soup was solid - but nothing really to rave about The bok choy and black mushrooms was quite good. Large whole mushroom caps on top of a bed of nicely sized baby bok choy. All in a rich sauce. Tasty and really filling The Singapore noodles weee my favorite. More than a little Taste of curry - without venturing into the overpowering level. A nice variety of shrimp and pork, and a level of spice that added just the right amount of heat. While I would prefer more spice, I also know that Singapore noodles are not meant to arrive spiced to my level of preference - that's what the side of chili oil is for! If you are looking for a solid Chinese option - one that is located a few blocks away from DC's Chinatown district - Da Hong Pao is a very good choice. read more

This clean, spacious restaurant is on a busy street. Parking is difficult, but we found a spot a couple of blocks away on a Sunday. Its location is convenient to public transportation. Service is fast and done with a smile. We had four people and ordered about a dozen dim sum items from a sheet. The skin on the veggie dumplings was a bit thick. The steamed ribs were succulent. The crust on the custard tarts (Dan Tat) was not up to par, neither was the breading on the steamed pork buns (too thick). The siu mai (shrimp and pork) dumplings were good. The pork wrapped in bean curd skin also was very good. The Malaysian sponge cake was new for us, and we liked it. The sticky rice needed some sausage and some more meat, but it was a favorite. This Chinese restaurant is absolutely disgusting! The chow mein and chicken rice we ordered were completely undercooked, and the chicken literally still had blood in it! A single rice bowl costs over $20 and tastes incredibly awful--a place like this would go out of business instantly in China. The service was also horrendous! We didn't leave a tip when we left (because they absolutely didn't deserve one). A server actually held up the receipt, went around asking each of us who didn't tip, and then had the nerve to call us "trash"?! I have never seen anything like this. I know tipping culture is out of control in the US and you usually feel obligated to tip, but I've never encountered a restaurant that forces a tip for terrible service and curses at you if you don't give one. When we arrived on a Saturday morning, we were concerned it might be crowded and there would be a wait, but that wasn't the case.
