The Glover Park stretch on Wisconsin has been troubled for a long time, and was very much so at the time of my visit here. Multiple spaces were adjacent, including two other storefronts in the same building as this Chinese restaurant, which has been here for a while through the troubles. Despite the fact that this area is home for me, I never visited this restaurant, mainly because the Vietnamese standby across the street drew my business. But with them gone, I found excuse to try this dumpling spot. I have to say, I didn't expect anything great and it exceeded my expectations. Pickup was not the smoothest; I discovered that ordering through one of the apps does not give them your name so I sat for a bit before it was finally determined what order was mine. I sampled a fried tofu dish, and while I have eaten quite a lot of fried tofu at Chinese restaurants over my years, this preparation was different from anything I've had. It was breaded and cooked with what seemed like a dry fry technique, and had ample dried chilis and peanuts. The salty flavor in addition to the dryness was a lot to take and I mixed it with other things, but it was interesting. A black mushroom salad was saucy and not spicy. I wasn't sure what their generically named vegetable dumplings might yield, but it was an aromatic and texturally interesting mix of greens and mushrooms, and came with both a vinegar-based sauce and some chili crisp, and the portion was big enough to be worth the price. This is a nice family style Chinese restaurant that we went to and it was an excellent experience! We got the shrimp Wonton soup, scallion pancakes, mapo tofu, and chrysanthemum tea. Everything tasted good, and it was the first time I tried mapo tofu, and I absolutely loved it. The service was really good and the restaurant was nice and quiet too. If you spend weeks searching for the best dumpling place in the greater DMV, you will have the most difficult time finding a dumpling place that makes better soup dumplings or traditional dumplings, than Dumplings & Beyond. You can watch The Chef in the back kneading the dough. Everything here is handmade. I kind of feel like this place didn't get the love that it deserves because this place should have a line out of the door and around the corner. My #1 favorite place to get dumplings!! Absolutely love the triple delight and the fish dumplings. Can't go wrong with any of them tbh. They're all handmade, loaded, and huge portions. I always get them steamed so I can't speak for pan-fried. Also loveeee the beef chow foon. Got medium spicy and it actually had a good kick to it. It's a bit like pad see ew but with a different flavor profile and more smokiness. The beef pieces were really tender and I can imagine are crispy if eaten right away. Dumplings and Beyond is an unpretentious, no-frills Chinese spot located in the neighborhood of Dumbarton Oaks - you walk up the stairs of a small strip mall to see an entryway crowded with dozens of takeout orders (a great sign of a solid Chinese restaurant). There are many tables throughout the space, with multiple large tables equipped with the classic Lazy Susan setup to maximize family-style sharing - as a party of 9 on a Saturday night at 7pm, there were a couple of open tables, as the restaurant was around 75% full, though continued to fill up throughout the night. The menu is extensive, ranging from your classic Chinese-American dishes (think General Tso's Chicken and Mongolian Beef) to more traditional Chinese fare (Tree Ear Salad and Ginger Scallion Shrimp) to regional specialties (you'll see some food from Hunan and Szechuan Province on the menu) - there's truly something for everyone! To start, we ordered their Pork n' Chives Dumpling ($12.95/10pcs), Chicken & Black Mushroom Dumpling ($12.95/10pcs), and Shrimp N' Chive Dumpling ($15.95/10pcs) - the food began to come out within 10 minutes. While I wasn't able to try any because I'm gluten-free, my friends really enjoyed these dumplings - they were plump and juicy, with the perfect dumpling wrapper thickness that trapped the soup inside, keeping the filling soft and supple. Additionally, the price is pretty reasonable given how large each dumpling is! My friends also shared some dishes family-style, first starting with the proteins: the Chinese Style Mu Shu Pork ($17.95) with cucumber, wooden fungus and egg with soy sauce, the Broccoli Beef ($19.95) served with carrots and brown sauce, and the Kung Pao Chicken ($16.95) with bell pepper, onion, and peanuts. While none of these were fantastic, they were generous portions at a good price, and the meat quality seemed pretty good! Additionally, the wood fungus in the Mu Shu Pork lent an interesting textural contrast to the dish. As a vegetable, we ordered the String Beans Szechuan Style ($14.95), which are fried green beans in an addictively spicy chili oil - these are quite greasy, but the green beans held their firm texture, and it's a great dupe for the famous Din Tai Fung String Beans! They also ordered the Combination Fried Rice ($14.95), which is a heap of glistening fried rice topped with chicken, beef, shrimp, and vegetables. While I didn't try this, it was (again) a large portion, and my friends thought it was seasoned well. Since we had ordered so many dishes, I think they threw in a large bowl of white rice for free as well, which paired nicely with the salty proteins. Lastly, I ordered their Pork Spare Rib Casserole ($19.95), which is a gigantic clay pot of comforting soup filled to the brim with cabbage, onion, cilantro, wood fungus, tofu, and succulent pork spareribs. The soup was well-seasoned (if not bordering on too salty), but the clean-tasting broth and fresh vegetables were perfect for a cold DC night. Overall, this was a great, affordable spot for both Americanized and authentic Chinese food, and perfect to curb the Chinese craving of several hungry Georgetown students - the food is tasty, service is fast, and there's something for everyone! read more

Vegan reviewer here! This is going to be short and sweet. I ordered delivery via DoorDash and received my order within about 30 minutes. The hot and spicy tofu... get it!!! It was everything I had wanted and more if chili, garlic, salty goodness is your thing. I do enjoy spicy food and it was not spicy in my opinion. This dish comes with a side of white rice as well. I also ordered the vegetable chow foon which was alright. The texture of the noodles was too soft but I still ate it. If anything, just get the tofu and live your best life! BLUF: A little pricey but the food is fresh & quite good. Service is always great!! Venue is small making large groups a challenge but almost always see large groups there, including ours. Parking? Better to walk there. Great casual neighborhood joint. Worth the drive? Yes, if only to try it once. Not much more to say other than the BLUF. If you want meat options or vegetarian options, this place offers both. Savory goodness. Flavors are pretty amazing. We ordered the chili pork with fried rice, beef chow foon, and szechuan dumplings. All were plentiful and flavorful. I would have liked more sauce on beef chow foon and, luckily, you can request more sauce on uber eats so we will next time. The fried rice had egg, carrots, fresh beansprouts, and peas - very good. Not too salty and cooked perfectly. Speaking of adjustments - they allow you to adjust spice level which is GREATLY appreciated and baybeeeee....yall go on ahead and use that feature! lol This is a step above American spicy. We got medium spicy (which Im normally ok with) and Im still waiting to for the feeling in my tongue to return. Its a nice burn but, if your tastebuds are in a tumultuous relationship with chilies (like I mine are) keep to the little to no spice requests. The sichuan dumplings were our fave but we really enjoyed all the dumplings. The soup dumplings had started to leak, but that's to be expected by delivery. What's the beyond in Dumplings & Beyond? I don't know and I don't care! The food is mediocre at best. The service is uninspired. The ambiance, such as it is, is cold, old and sterile. We got a recommendation from a local that the dumplings were good. That is a bit of an overstatement. The wrap on the dumpling was thick, tasteless and bland. It is true that the filling was good but only good nothing beyond. The Hot and Sour Soup was okay. It got better once you got used to its strong taste. But the Hot and Sour soup at the dirty little Chinese place on P Street (New Dynasty) is 1000 times better. The soup at Dumplings & Beyond was a single note of sour peppery broth. No complex flavors that are usually the hallmark of a good Hot and Sour Soup. Granted, all we had were the soup, the chicken & cilantro dumplings and the special dumplings. That is a limited sample. Perhaps the rest of the menu is spectacular. But - hello - we got 2 kinds of dumplings at Dumplings & Beyond. Don't you think that I should be wetting myself over their dumplings??? PS - I wasn't!!! I am sorry to be so harsh but if you're going to have a name of a specific food item in your title, then make it FREAKING OUTSTANDING, not mediocre. Plus step up the service and clean up the atmosphere a little. To be fair, they were doing an amazing amount of carry-out business so maybe there is something that I totally missed. Oddly enough, I was searching in a reddit forum for best Chinese delivery in Washington DC and found a post about a relatively small delivery area, but Dumplings and Beyond was incredible. I open Uber Eats and found we were within that range! We sampled many different foods but their dumplings, chicken fried rice and their scallion pancakes were the best of all. The dumplings are really fresh and one can easily taste the difference between their house made ones and the frozen ones you get in the supermarket. We wolfed down two plates of dumplings - house special which contains shrimp inside and pork/chives one. The entree dish was rather disappointing and I had a bad tummy ache after the meal. We ordered this sweet and spicy sauce beef dish that was under chef recommendations section but it was way too hard and caramelized that we could not finish most of it. Surprisingly quiet but we were eating early. Have as many tables as they can fit into the space so when it is full, it is full. Our group started with seaweed salad, hot and sour soup, and chicken and corn soup. Only negative was chicken and corn soup was so very hot in temperature it took time to cool to enjoy. Followed with tea and three kinds of (pan fried) dumplings: vegetable; shrimp with chives; and fish with cilantro. Flavors were good and plenty of dumplings (12 per serving?) but veg were very plain (broccoli) and may have benefitted from an "and" as the others did. (Perhaps a bit of ginger?). I sampled the Dumplings Sichuan and the Fish with Black Bean sauce, both of which were enjoyable. I expected ma laa/numbing flavor from the Sichuan Dumplings and instead tasted a salty, slightly sweet sauce that was pleasant but not what I would have ordered had I known that it would not be spicy. 4/5 for this item. Fish with Black Bean sauce is a salty, comforting delight. The fish tends to be the whitest of white fishes and the onions/peppers are typically the perfect contrast to the softness of fish and the saltiness of the sauce. This dish did everything that it should've done and, combined with the rice that was included, deserves a 5/5. Portion size was good, flavor profile was as good as expected, and the experience was enjoyable.
